Showing your Children what it
Means to “Go Green”
•
(Through Creating Less Trash)
By John Nugent
With the recent celebration of Earth Day, we
need to take advantage of the opportunities we
have to teach our children the 3 Rs of “ReduceReuse-Recycle”. In this article we’ll share tips
on teaching your preschoolers what it means to Go Green using
the 3 Rs in relation to trash reduction. As Tiny Tots customers,
you daily demonstrate to your children the value of helping the
environment by choosing reusable diapers, turning a 100%
garbage item into a 0% garbage item. Teaching your children the
importance of creating less trash and consuming fewer resources
is necessary to the future of our planet. Here is a list of ways to
show your children how they, too, can help do their part:
REDUCE: Before you Own It, Always Ask “Do I Really Need
This?”
There are many ways to reduce your family’s total product consumption, but here’s one that every age can relate to. Use fewer
paper napkins or better yet, use reusable napkins. There’s no
need to grab a huge stack of
napkins from the concession
stand when you know you’ll use
only one or two. Each American
consumes an average of 2200
standard two-ply napkins per
year, or the equivalent of just
over six of these napkins per
day. If everyone in the United States used an average of one fewer
napkin per day, more than a billion pounds of napkins could be
saved from landfills each year. A stack of napkins this size could
fill the entire Empire State Building.
REUSE: Before you Trash It, Always Ask “Can this be Reused
in Some Way?”
• Reuse packaging. Margarine tubs, yogurt containers, coffee
cans, and jars can be reused to store food, leftovers, crayons,
pencils, and all sorts of things.
• Make gifts, crafts, and other fun stuff. It’s a great way to
reuse things like old magazines, egg cartons, film canisters,
cardboard tubes and boxes that might have otherwise been
thrown away. For ideas, go to www.makingfriends.com/
recycle.htm
•
Pack a waste-free lunch when your kids are school-age. Use
a reusable lunchbox, reusable drink containers, cloth napkins,
and silverware. You could save $250 a year and as much
weight in waste as the average nine-year-old (70 lbs)!

When you do use disposables like plastic cups, plates,
utensils, and plastic food storage bags, don’t throw them
away! Wash and reuse them -- most of them will last for
a long time with many uses. Remind your kids that due
to a lack of sun and air, it takes more than 100 years for a
plastic sandwich bag to decompose in a landfill (even the
biodegradable ones).
Reuse old bed sheets and towels and cotton diapers.
They can still be reused as wiping rags in your home or for
washing cars instead of using paper towels.
Save old newspapers and roll them into fireplace logs. They
also work better than paper towels for cleaning windows.
Take reusable cloth bags on shopping trips.
Turn your Trash into Cash. Don’t throw away the clothes and
toys your kids have outgrown. Remember: one man’s trash
is another man’s treasure. Have a Yard Sale or advertise
through the CraigsList.org website: It’s local and it’s free.
For an online community “swap meet” where you can give
(or receive) donated stuff, go to www.freecycle.org. You
may also set child related donations out with your soiled
diapers clearly labeled, Second Chances. We will collect
your donation and Second Chances will pick them up.
Second Chances is a non-profit agency located in Sonoma
County whose mission is to assist families with children to
have a second chance.
Take a field trip to a landfill to help your kids understand
there is no “away” in “throwing things away.” This is when
you have the best opportunity to teach the importance of
recycling and reusing. Call your garbage collection facility
before you go. Some collection stations have a consumer
education area or you can make arrangements to speak
with someone from the solid waste department.
RECYCLE: Ask: “If it can’t be Reused, Can it be
Recycled?”
Recycling is one earth-friendly activity kids of all ages can
get involved in. Children can learn what items regularly used
in their homes can be recycled, from soft drink cans and milk
bottles to detergent jugs and spaghetti sauce jars. Toddlers
and preschoolers can participate in separating and grouping
recyclables. Make up a fun recycling game where your kids
guess whether something you name is recyclable. There’s a Chinese Proverb that says: “Tell
me, I’ll forget. Show me, I may remember. But
involve me and I’ll understand.”To find where to
take recyclables, go to www.earth911.org or call
1-800-CLEANUP.
Diapering Facts
Environmental & Health Updates
Chemicals In Disposable Diapers
Sodium Polyacrylate, a chemical that has been
linked to the increase in childhood related
asthma, increased scrotal temperature in baby
boys and banned in tampons due to toxic shock
syndrome is in every disposable diaper sold in America today
(with the exception of Tushies). Surprisingly, even brands sold
in “health food or eco” stores/websites contain this chemical…..
including (but not limited to) Seventh Generation, Nature’s Best,
Nature Boy & Girl, Whole Foods and G-Diapers. Understandably, there is confusion amongst consumers that have a desire
to use a diaper that is healthy for both their baby and the
environment when these single-use diapers show up in their
health food stores and co-ops. As a consumer myself, I have
always assumed that if a product is at the health food store I shop
at, it has been evaluated for health and environmental impacts
prior to getting shelf space. In regards to diapers, this is not an
accurate assumption.
Since you have chosen to use cotton diapers for your baby’s
diapering needs, it seems safe to assume that you are looking for
a comfortable, healthy and eco-friendly diapering option. In lieu
of this, please note that any disposable diaper you put on your
baby (besides Tushies) contains Sodium Polyacrylate irregardless
of where you purchased it or what the packaging says. If you’d
like to confirm for yourself, you can. Take the test:
• Pour water into the diaper you are testing
• Tear open the liner and you will see shiny gel beads
This gel is the sodium polyacrylate once it has absorbed liquid.
Water Usage & Diapering
Recent talk has been about the water needed
for laundering reusables but the water necessary for manufacturing a paper diaper
(for one-time use) or the water necessary to
properly dispose of a paper diaper (flushing
human waste or in the case of the gDiaper,
flushing the inner section which often requires multiple flushes)
is ignored. When these high water consumers are factored
into the equation, the water used to launder cotton diapers is
well spent and reusable diapering continues to remain the clear
environmental winner.
Biodegradable & Compostable Diapers
We recently reviewed packaging from several diaper companies
claiming to be “eco friendly”. The claims of biodegradability and
compostability were shocking. Please don’t think that if you are
throwing a diaper away (ie. landfilling it), even it makes these eco
claims, that it is an eco option. Once landfilled, where air and
sunlight are absent, nothing biodegrades or composts. Unless
you are personally composting or leaving your soiled diapers in
the sun to biodegrade, there isn’t an environment benefit to using
a diaper that makes these eco claims.

Recycle your maternity clothes and make
a 50% profit at the same time!
With the help of Maternity Xchange you can receive a return on
your investment in your maternity wardrobe. Maternity Xchange
is a Mobile Maternity Shop & Pregnancy Resource that holds
maternity clothing sale events, and birth & baby fairs throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. They
specialize in mid to high-end apparel
and carry a great selection of both
new and consignment merchandise helping make brand name
maternity apparel accessible to
everyone. Watch their website
www.MaternityXchange.com
for a list of their name brands
and the monthly sales located
nearest you.
Recycling your maternity clothes for
profit is a very simple process. First you go to Seller’s Info on
their website to download the Seller’s Form and to register for
your pick up or drop off. You can drop off at one of their conveniently located drop off centers in Campbell, San Francisco, San
Mateo, Marin and Alameda or at any regular sale event. Once
Maternity Xchange has your clothes, they will be sorted and put
up for sale. On the 15th of each month Maternity Xchange mails
you a check in the amount of 50% of the price received for all
your sold items. If they don’t sell, you will be given the option
of donating your unusable clothes to The Homeless Prenatal
Program or to have them returned to you.
Maternity Xchange has been in the Mobile Maternity business
for the past 4 years. The company was founded in 2004 by
Bobbi Williams who has always had a dream to own her own
business. She enrolled in the “Simple Steps to Start and Grow
your Small Business” and found that she was naturally gifted in
the skills required to run a successful business. Shortly after the
business was launched Bernadette Dee, mother of 3, became a
partner. When asked how she got involved, Bernadette said, “I
actually came by to sell my clothing through Maternity Xchange
and thought it was a great business idea with loads of potential,
so I offered to help and it quickly became a partnership.”
Bernadette and her family are extremely conscientious when in
comes to preserving our natural resources. If you were to drive
by their Burlingame home on garbage night you would find their
recycle bin to be twice as full as their trash bin. Bags of soiled
cotton diapers have also been sighted waiting for the arrival of
the diaper delivery truck to take them away to be washed and
reused.
Expecting her fourth child next month, Bernadette will be spending more time in her home office while Bobbi will be on location
for their monthly sales events and Birth & Baby Fairs, currently
located in the areas of San Francisco, Marin, San Mateo and
the East Bay.
The next Birth & Baby Fair will be on May 24 at Fort Mason in San
Francisco. This event will not only be fun for your entire family,
but you will gain many valuable resources and contacts for your
pregnancy, birth and parenting career. More information is at
www.maternityxchange.com.

Nightime Diapering
For those interested in nighttime diapering
solutions, here are a few that we would
recommend:
• If you are still giving a feeding during the
night, change the diaper before feeding.
They will fall asleep again after you have
fed them.
• Double diaper a cotton diaper. Since the
cotton is what absorbs, the more you have of it, the more it
will absorb. Fold a second diaper in thirds and place it down
the center of the first diaper. Do not be afraid of the extra bulk.
It will not hurt them or keep them from sleeping.
• Use a Bamboo Diaper (see page 6 for details on Bamboozle).
Bamboo is incredibly absorbent, naturally anti-bacterial and
breathable.
• Use a Fuzzi Bunz (see page 7 for details).
• Do not be afraid of wet diapers during the night. We found
our boys never had a rash after sleeping 10+ hours per night,
even though their diaper would be saturated.
• Use an Imse Vimse liner (top of page 6) between the diaper
and skin. The urine goes thourgh the paper into the diaper
and the skin feels dry.
A weekly tradition, Lina helps her
mom put the diapers away. She is
sporting her Polar Fleece Wrap by
Bummis.
Seven month old Ava is showing
off her Litewrap diaper cover and
endulging in a little belly rubbing
time.

DIAPERING SUPPLIES
DISPOSABLE DIAPERS & WIPES
Snappi Diaper Clips
· gel-free
· perfume free
· chlorine free
· dye-free
· chemical free
The only single-use diaper on the market today that doesn’t contain
super absorbent gelling chemicals (AGM) is Tushies. They are a healthier
single-use diaper than the Seventh Generation, Nature Boy & Girl, Tendercare Plus, the G Diaper, Whole Baby Diapers from Whole Foods, and
the mainstream brands. Flushable diapers require the same amount
of raw materials to produce, including crude oil, for just a few hours
use. There is no water savings, plus they often clog sewers. There
is no such thing as an eco friendly hybrid or single-use diaper.
See for yourself: Cut open the padding of a Tushies diaper and you’ll
find a natural blend cotton and wood pulp fluff. Chemical-Free! Open
the padding of any other disposable diaper and you can shake out white
granules. These are the acrylic acid polymer salts. Put the granules in
water and watch them turn into gel. This is the chemical connected
with increased child asthma, increased scrotal temperature and toxic
shock syndrome.

Earn Free Diaper Service
Due to cost increases in every area of our business, we are finding it inevitable to raise our prices. We are trying to hold out as
long as possible. If we could increase our customer count by about 200 families each week,
we might be able to avoid an increase.
The number one way new customer’s hear
about us is by YOU! We would like to say
THANK YOU and give you $15 for every new customer that
you refer to us. They simply need to mention your name when
they order the diaper service. There is no limit to the amount of
referrals we will honor.
Experienced Diaper Changers Needed
Tiny Tots is looking for experienced “Parent Diapering Experts” who are currently
diapering in cotton and would like to represent Tiny Tots Diaper Service at Maternity
and Baby Fairs and other parenting events
in your county. You will be demonstrating
the basic diaper fold (see How to Diaper
Instructional Videos at tinytots.com) and the use of Snappi Clips
and diaper covers along with answering general questions regarding diaper service. Tiny Tots Baby Boutique will be hosting
an information session on Saturday, June 21 from 1:00-2:00 for
those interested in the program. Please let us know if you are
planning to come or if you have any questions. Contact: Shannon
Nugent, Educational Coordinator, 408-206-4399 or shannon@

your helpful hint. Send to [email protected].
Easy Label Audit For Your Diaper Count
An easy way to have us audit your diaper inventory is to write
a 2-word note on the label on the soiled bag before you set it
outside - “25 left”, or whatever number of clean diapers are left
in your home. These labels are cut off the diaper bag and turned
into the office after the soiled diaper counter counts your bag and
writes the count on the
label. When we add
up the number left +
the soiled count + the
number of diapers
delivered that day, we
can determine if your
rotation is correct.
Some customers do this every week. Some do it once a month.
**If you are on two or more types of diapers, please note which
size you are auditing (25 Reg left, 10 Mega left).
