Dear Friends,
Since 1951,
the Casa has
been renewing
lives through:
Spiritual Growth
The Casa provides a safe place for the
spiritual growth of all people. Many
programs enlighten participants in the
Franciscan tradition and spirituality.
Lives are changed here!
Healing and Transformation
The Casa is a welcoming center for
prayer, healing and transformation.
We help people enrich their lives with
spiritual meaning, a sense of belonging,
and connection.
Serving Others
Following the model of Saint Francis,
the Casa nurtures everyone in our
community and beyond – especially
the most vulnerable – by supporting,
healing and empowering lives.

Welcome to the Franciscan Renewal Center (the “Casa”). This catalog is your
doorway, your invitation and your welcome to a place where you can come away,
rest awhile and renew body, mind and spirit.
The Casa offers many opportunities for you to enrich your life and by doing so the
lives of others. The first of these is our desert setting of serene beauty and comfort.
Desert vegetation lives the reality of trust in God’s providence to sustain life when
to all appearances there is little hope. Nearby mountains reach toward the sky,
offering a sense of boundary and boundlessness all at once. You are safe here,
but not limited.
The programming described in this catalog illustrates the simple principle that
is often spoken and heard on the grounds of the Casa: All are Welcome. From
individual class sessions on physical well-being and social justice issues, to series
on scriptural and religious themes, to weekend retreats offering ample time for
contemplation, reflection, prayer, and growth, there is something for everyone here.
If you are a Casa “regular,” consider using this catalog to find something that you
have not tried before. If you are an occasional visitor, look for something that will
put you in touch with the goodness God has placed within you. If you have never
set foot on these beautiful grounds, this is your time! Once you experience the
beauty and peace that is here, look through these pages and find something that
speaks to your heart. You’ll soon have reason to return again and again.
Finally, whether you are a first-timer or a Casa veteran, share the Casa with
someone you know. Consider inviting someone half your age to introduce the
next generation to all that the Casa has to offer. (Or someone twice your age!)
To register for any of these programs, simply call or visit our website. There’s also
a form in the center of this catalog, if that’s your preference. It doesn’t matter how
you get here, just come! The richness of the Casa experience awaits you.
Peace and all good,
Father Joe Schwab, OFM

Spiritual Direction
Exploring a relationship with God
Spiritual direction is a time-honored term for a conversation, ordinarily between
two persons, in which one is seeking a companion who is specifically educated
and experienced about the ways in which God may be touching her or his life.
WHAT HAPPENS IN SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?
Spiritual direction is really about companionship and drawing closer to God through
conversation, listening and prayer. We talk about what’s on your mind. How is God
present or absent in your daily life?
IS THERE A COST?
Our suggested donation for spiritual direction is $45-$65 per visit. The amount is
negotiable and is determined between the director and the person seeking direction.
HOW DO I FIND A SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR?
Call Sharon Taszarek at the Franciscan Renewal Center, 480.948.7460, ext. 162
or email [email protected].

Franciscan Mentor Program
Season for Nonviolence (SNV)
The Franciscan Renewal Center, in the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi,
has recognized, supported and promoted the Season For Nonviolence in
the past
14 years of its 18-year campaign. The Season for Nonviolence
is dedicated to demonstrating nonviolence as a powerful way to heal,
transform and empower our lives and our communities. Traditionally,
the Season spans 64 days, beginning with the memorial anniversary of
Mahatma Gandhi and ending with that of Martin Luther King, Jr. Each of
these men lived his vision of an empowered, nonviolent world and inspired
others to share in their vision. (See the program on nonviolence training
with Martin Luther King principles on page 19.)
The Franciscan Renewal Center honors and observes the 64 days
of the SNV, in addition to highlighting events focused on peace throughout
the year. We continually aim to inspire others by presenting thoughtprovoking, challenging new ways of peacebuilding. Come find out how
changing your words can change the world.
As part of the SNV, we proudly present Nonviolence Leadership in the
Way of St. Francis, a certificate program in facilitating nonviolent dialogue
and action which can be used in a variety of situations, such as homeowner’s
associations, school organizations, offices, and personal relationships. It can
also be an opportunity to lead into career-leveraging nonviolent skills …
the opportunities to utilize the skills learned in this program are limitless!
We are very pleased to offer this curriculum. We invite you to attend the
Nonviolence Certificate Dinner on January 15, which will give
an explanation of the program.
Mark your calendar for our annual celebration of World Peace Day,
which will be celebrated on September 21, 2016. Please join us on this day
to gather together in the name of peace. We hope you will be inspired to
make peace personal.
The Season for Nonviolence logo (shown above) found alongside a
program in this catalog reflects the program/event is a part of the Season

Recruiting and Showing Appreciation to Volunteers
Wednesday, January 20, 4:00 - 6:00 pm Session,

Recruitment is a process to attract and invite people to consider volunteer
involvement within your organization. It’s inviting, not pleading.

Nonviolence Leadership
Certificate Program Dinner
Don’t let volunteering be a thankless job. The number one method for
retaining volunteers is to make sure they know that they are appreciated.
Recognition and appreciation should come in different ways. “Thank
you” or “Way to go” can be the “paycheck” for a volunteer. Expressions of
appreciation and recognition are important in keeping volunteers motivated
and enthusiastic. Recognition has multiple functions beyond simple human
courtesy. To the volunteer, recognition signifies that someone notices and
someone cares. To the rest of the organization, recognition creates role
models and communicates standards.
Fee for each Survival School Coaching Session, including dinner:
$25 per person. Pre-registration required.

Fee per person: $20 includes dinner and program. Pre-registration required.
Br. Vincent Nguyen, OFM is a talented iconographer
who replicated the icon of the San Damiano Crucifix

studying Theology for the Priesthood at the Franciscan
School of Theology.

most beloved but misunderstood saints. Most people don’t know that St. Francis
was a prisoner of war who faced a number of hardships and challenges before
having a profound religious experience. In untangling the paradox of his life,
we will explore how the call of the warrior intersects with the call of spirituality.

well as solutions that are consistent with Franciscan traditions and values.
Pope Francis calls on us to actively reach out to solve problems of inequality.

are available.
Fee $15.00. Pre-registration required. Muffins and coffee provided;
scholarships available.

Faith Encounters the Ecological Crisis
Sundays 12:30 – 2:30 pm
6 sessions from February 7 – March 13
Facilitated by the Care for Creation Ministry Team
What kind of human beings will we be as we go through the ecological crisis?
What is the great work of this community? Every day we experience toxins in
our air, waters, and food; extinction rates unseen since the end of the dinosaur
age; changes in weather patterns; diseases impacting our forests; the rise in
human diseases like cancer, asthma, and diabetes; invasive species and more.
Faith Encounters the Ecological Crisis identifies the ways in which we are already
living beyond the biocapacity of the planet and challenges participants to
identify elements of a spirituality for living through the ecological crisis.
Fee: $40. Pre-registration required.

Step Up Your Job Search
An interview is an exchange of views (inter/view). A conversation with a
purpose. An open exchange between two people. An encounter.
From whatever source volunteers come, an interview and a process of
screening are essential. Otherwise, individuals may be assigned to jobs for
which they are not prepared or in which they cannot be competent. Recruiting
is likely to be most successful if the prospect can be interviewed in face-to-face
rather than by telephone or letter.
There are tips to good interviewing. Come to this practice session and share
with others and grow and develop the most effective techniques.
Fee for each Survival School Coaching Session, including dinner:
$25 per person. Pre-registration required.

Peace Walk & Mindfulness Meditation
Saturday, March 5, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Rev. Marvin Brown
The Peace Walk is an exercise in learning how to apply mindfulness practice,
to create peace and compassion in our lives. We will learn to “walk” with our
conflicts instead of speaking or acting in a less than kind way. (Does NOT
involve physical walking.) Mindfulness practice is learning how to be aware in
the present moment: aware of our bodies, aware of our actions, aware of our
thinking, aware of our beliefs, aware of our feeling, etc. Come join us for
a Saturday of peace and meditation.
We have invited Rev. Marvin Brown from the Buddhist tradition, to share his
thoughts and experience about nonviolence and peace. A part of the Season
for Nonviolence is to explore a variety of peace and nonviolence practices –
especially to see what other faiths can teach us.
Fee: $45, includes lunch. Pre-registration required.
Rev. Marvin Brown is ordained in the Order of Interbeing (Tiep
Hien) a Buddhist Order founded by Ven. Thich Nhat Hanh. He
is uniquely qualified to blend Eastern philosophy with Western
thought. Marvin is often referred to as a displaced monk, which
allows him to bring the mystical and contemplative perspectives
into everyday living. Marvin teaches mindfulness practice and
classes on metaphysics, mysticism and history of religion.

Catholic Social Teaching
Saturday, March 5, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Kevin Saunders
Saturday, March 12, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Laura Libertore
The Gospels were written for an audience in the Middle East and for people
who lived with that cultural world view. Imagine “camels trying to get through
the eye of a needle” or “plucking out our eyes if they cause us to sin.” This daylong seminar will present the basics of Middle Eastern culture as that culture
applies itself to Jesus and the Gospels, presenting cultural clues needed to see the
meaning behind the message. Come to this seminar and you’ll never read the
Gospels in the same way again.
Based on biblical values and rooted in Scripture, Catholic Social Teaching invites
us to live our faith, deeply, while attending to the signs of the times. It is a teaching
founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came “to bring glad tidings to
the poor . . . liberty to captives . . . recovery of sight to the blind.” (Lk 4:18-19) and
who identified himself with “the least of these,” (Mt 25:40).
Fee per person: $60 includes lunch. Pre-registration required.
Kevin Saunders holds a Master’s Degree in New Testament from
the University of Notre Dame. He has lived and studied the Bible
in Jerusalem, attending graduate courses at the acclaimed École
Biblique, Jerusalem.

Dinner immediately following at 6:00 pm
Designing and writing a clear position description for a volunteer is an
important skill for anyone who manages or wants to develop a program
staffed by volunteers. Managing the expectations of volunteers and yourself
(as a leader of volunteers) begins with a clear description of not only the task,
but also the qualifications, a statement of the importance of the job to the
organization, and some criteria for evaluation.
Bring the job descriptions you are working with for this coaching session.

two reflecting on the experience.
Space permitting, Casa retreatants are invited to extend

This men’s retreat will explore the following questions: What is the purpose
of my life really? Why do I feel stuck? How can I get back on track? Where is
the peace Jesus talks about in Scripture? What does God want from me? The
answers to these questions are centuries old and they were handed down to us by
the saints in the Church who first asked them. Come and be part of the answers.
Retreat fee including meals: $130; with lodging $215 single, $165 double per
person. Check-in: Friday 5:00 pm; dinner 6:00 pm. Retreat ends Sunday 1:00
pm. Pre-registration required.

international speaker. Deacon Thomas shows others how to
discover their gifts and talents as well as their purpose and their
call with a process he calls “Pathing.” Deacon Thomas is also an
author published by Liguori Press.
Pope Francis asks, “Do we allow ourselves to be illumined by the faith of Mary,
who is our Mother?" Or do we think of her as someone distant from us? In this
workshop, we will rediscover Mary as the model and figure of the Church in the
faith that she possessed. See Mary’s life through sacred art, learn about flower
legends associated with Mary, and come to better understand Mary’s role as
our heavenly Mother and Queen.

Individual Counseling & Support Groups
Grounded in the Gospel concepts of peace and human dignity, the Casa
Counseling Ministry provides an opportunity for its members to serve others.
As “wounded healers,” the ministry has the privilege and responsibility to
actively participate in God’s work through those who reach out to us for hope
and care.
The Franciscan Renewal Center provides a staff of professional counselors, all
of whom are licensed by the State of Arizona Board of Behavioral Health. Our
counselors take time from private practices to provide traditional, professional
therapy to individuals, families, and couples with one-on-one sessions, as well
as facilitate support groups that deal with a variety of adult issues. All of their
service to the Casa is voluntary.
Because our counselors generously volunteer their time as an outreach to the
community, we are able to offer all our counseling services on a donation basis,
but no one is turned away due to lack of funds.
Individual sessions are available mornings, afternoons and evenings, Monday
through Friday, and require an appointment. For an appointment, please call
the Counseling Ministry at 480.948.7460, ext. 133, between the hours of 8:30 am
and Noon, Monday through Friday, or leave a message on the Counseling voice
mail system and your call will be returned as soon as possible. An appointment
is NOT required for any of the on-going support groups.

The Faith in Action Ministry helps people find ways to put their faith into action
to make a positive change in the world. We pattern our work on the lives of
Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi by compassionately putting the love of God in
the world in concrete ways in three primary areas of focus:
• Assist the most vulnerable in the community through targeted
empowerment projects
• Inspire people toward nonviolence and peacemaking through the Season
for Nonviolence and the Leadership Program in the Way of St. Francis
• Promote ways to care for our planet and all of God’s creatures
through our education programs
In addition to the workshops and retreats shown in this catalog, the Faith in
Action Ministry offers intensive educational and formational programs in
partnership with JustFaith Ministries. Participants are empowered to develop a
passion and thirst for justice and to express this passion in concrete acts of social
ministry in their church and in the community at large.

JustFAITH
The JustFaith program begins in mid-September and ends in May/June. JustFaith
focuses on discipleship and the call to be about God’s dream of justice and
compassion in a world scarred by poverty. Meeting weekly, small groups employ
books, videos, discussion, prayer, retreats and hands-on experiences.
JustMatters
Offered in 6 or 8-week modules, JustMatters allows participants to focus on a
particular current social justice topic. The general format for these topic-focused
modules is prayer, readings, videos, speakers and dialogue. JustMatters allows a
group of 8 to 15 people to give sustained attention to a specific area of
concern and culminating in a call to engaged action.
EngagingSpirituality
Engaging Spirituality is a 26-week spiritual journey for small groups that
explores the connection between prayerful presence and social action by
applying contemplative wisdom to the needs and possibilities of our times.
Baptism, Family Catechesis and
Sacrament Preparation for Children
Infant Baptism
Our Lady of the Angels offers infant baptism to registered members of the
church. Baptisms take place during Sunday Mass at regularly scheduled intervals
throughout the year. Private baptisms are not the norm as your child is being
welcomed into the universal church – a world-wide faith. Community witness is
an important part of this sacrament. Please contact us if a significant challenge
should exist. The first step in arranging a baptism is to attend the Infant Baptism
Information Session, which is held the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30
pm. More information is available on our website (thecasa.org), or by calling
Patty Tafolla at 480.948.7460, extension 154 or email [email protected]
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults adapted for Children
Baptism preparation for children ages seven and over
Children over the age of seven are considered to have reached the “age of reason”
and are, therefore, expected to have adequate instruction in the fundamentals
of their faith before baptism. After appropriate preparation, they will celebrate the
three sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at the Great
Easter Vigil held each Holy Saturday in the Palm Court.

Faith In Action Ministry
Family Catechesis
The Church recognizes that parents are the primary faith educators of their
children. Family-based religious education/faith formation is offered to families
at Our Lady of the Angels. This process combines monthly family meetings,
home study materials, online learning, retreat experiences, community service
and participation in Sunday Liturgy. Meetings are held on Sunday mornings.
Registration is open throughout the year.
Sacrament Preparation for Children
Our sacrament preparation programs are based on the Family Catechesis model
with monthly family meetings along with the appropriate sacrament materials
to be completed at home. Students are required to be co-enrolled into the Family
Catechesis program.
First Reconciliation
Children in grades two and above can enroll in this sacrament preparation
program, which begins in the fall. This process combines monthly family
meetings with home study materials.
Confirmation and First Communion
Students who are in the third grade and above and who have completed their
first reconciliation are eligible to enroll in the Confirmation/Eucharist program.
The Phoenix Diocese celebrates the Restored Sequence of Initiation; therefore,
Confirmation will be celebrated prior to First Communion at the same Mass.
The process includes family meetings, student classes and home study materials.
Students who have completed their First Communion and still need to be
confirmed are welcome to participate in this program. Age appropriate
programs are available. Please call for details.
For information on any of the Family and Sacrament Programs,
please call Patty Tafolla, Director of Catechetical Ministry
at 480.948.7460, extension 154 or email Patty at [email protected]

High School Youth Ministry: for students 9th - 12th grade
Casa High School Youth meet every other Sunday at 5:00 pm and conclude in
communion with the community mass at 7:00 pm. We share dinner and stories
as we build relationships between families. Teens are encouraged to learn about
and grow in their faith as we explore what it means to be Catholic through the
lens of Franciscan spirituality. This community building and learning inspires
us to answer our call to go out and share the good news. We strive to serve our
neighbors and the surrounding community in a variety of ways with hearts
full of love and compassion. Watch the bulletin or check with the office for
upcoming teen retreat opportunities.
Middle School Ministry: for students 6th - 8th grade
Casa Middle School Youth meet two Sundays a month and strive to be engaged
in the Family Catechesis program. Youth get the opportunity for age appropriate
learning, community building, games, and activities. We strive to let every
student know they are loved and valued as children of God. We provide a safe
space for sharing and opportunities for growth in developing each person’s
spiritual identity. Retreat opportunities are also available.
For more information about meetings, events, and service opportunities contact
James Whitaker, Youth Minister at 480.355.0343 or email [email protected].

3. A baptized Catholic who was not raised as a Catholic.
If you are interested or even curious, the next formal “Inquiry Period”
will begin September, 2015.

your life? Is it the welcoming place where you feel valued and supported that
you’ve been looking for?
Ever wonder how the Casa keeps the lights on?
There are many open doors to renewal at the Casa thanks to the generous

These funds support the ongoing operations of the Casa, including new and
continuing programs and ministries that provide opportunities for spiritual
growth, healing, transformation and ways to serve others. Pledges are paid
in increments throughout the year and are vital to sustaining the Casa’s
commitment to always be a nurturing place where relationships come first

Books and gifts to delight
the body, mind and spirit
We offer handcrafted works by local artists and fair trade crafters from
