Dear Members,
By this time, we hope you've planned to attend the Seminar, July 18, Saturday,
9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Pi Kappa Alpha National Headquarters, 577 University.

Tennessee 38112, $3.00. This fee includes lunch catered by Robilio's. Hostesses
will be Chairman, Thelma Wilson, Alyce Garson, Jewel Standefer and Katherine Young.
Jessie Webb, Vice President, is in charge of the Seminar.
We wish to take this opportunity to thank the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity for their
generous cooperation in extending to us the use of the lovely roomS at the
Fraternity house. We are proud to be associated with them. Deadline for registration is July 16. We are pleased Mr. Leon S. Hollingsworth will be our speaker-his subject, "Migratory Patterns into and out of Georgia," with related subjects.
Mrs. Hollingsworth will be our guest also. We look forward to their visit with
us.
On April 20, Monday evening, Mr. Jas. L. Garthright, spoke to us on "Legal Terms
in Old Records." It was interesting and entertaining. We wish to express our
appreciation to Mr. Garthright for sharing his busy schedule with us.
Mr. Hugh B. Johnston, Jr. of Wilson, North Carolina, has accepted our invitation
as our guest in 1971 provided he doesn't teach summer school.
At a recent "book exchange" meeting, we were delighted to have Miss Reba Orman,
Head, Local History and Genealogical Section. and Mr. Nathan Josel Jr., Head,
History Department, visit us. We planned a "group visit" to Cossitt Library. We
feel the necessity of learning how to use the card catalogue and indexes. Once
we have familiarized ourselves with the files, we can easily locate a book on the
shelves. We will keep you informed on further developments. It is appropriate
at this time to mention the growth of our library system here in Memphis and our
association with them. When the building is completed at Mclean, one floor will
be devoted to History and Genealogy, with a trained staff; Thus making the
library one of the finest research centers in the south. We might add that many
out-of-town subscribers may find it interesting and inspiring to learn that the
Tennessee Genealogical Society, formerly Memphis Genealogical Society, was founded
by a small group of dedicated people of forethought. At first, on a small scale,
they placed genealogical books in Cossitt Library through the sale of "Ansearchin'"
News. Since then, many volumes have found their way to the shelves of Cossitt.
We aspire to follow their concepts and continue to grow in stride in our future
association with the Library. The charter members first met in the homes of the
members. For a long time, this was continued. Now we meet every third Monday at
~ the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity House at 10:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. every month excepting January, April, July and October, then at 7:30 p.m. at McLean Library.

excellent response in both departments. Mrs. Henry Crymes has been elected to
the office of Librarian. A book, "The Plantagenet Ancestry," has been placed in
the Library as a memorial to Ruth Henley Duncan and "Living Descendants of Blood
Roya]" by Count d'Angerville in memory of Margaret McNeill Ayres. By the time
you receive this issue, many of you will be on trips doing research. I wish you
happy hunting and good luck.

-52NOTES FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
The staff of "Ansearchin'" News expresses its sincere appreciation to Miss Mary
Rowe Ruble, Historian of Cocke County, Tennessee, for her contribution of the
only extant record book left in the county after the courthouse burned in 1876.
Miss Nancy Lampson prepared the deed manuscript which is of such importance to
those doing research in that area that we are omitting, this issue, the Yellow
Fever Deaths in Memphis, 1878, and the West Tennessee Land Grants. The compilation of these Cocke County data provides our readers with a new and fulsome
history of persons living in that portion of East Tennessee. The indefatigable
researcher on this project has been Mr. T. P. Hughes, Jr., to whom we owe a debt
of gratitude.

CORRECTION ***
One of our subscribers, familiar with the Madison County, Tennessee records, has
brought to our attention an error in deciphering, from microfilm, a name listed
on page 6], 1840 Census of Madison County. This name read as Robert J. Cluster
should be Robert J. Chester. Mr. Chester was the prominent citizen whose name
was given to the new county of Chester in 1875. Please correct your pages so
that this eminent gentleman will be included.

NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY VIRGINIA WILLS AND ADMINISTRATIONS 1713-1749, compiled and
published by James F. Lewis and J. Motley Booker, M.D. (1967), 217 pages,
soft cover, index with over 600 family names. Order from J. Motley
Booker, M.D., Lottsburg, Virginia 22511. Price: $10.50.
Many of the family names listed in the 35 page index are later found in other
Northern Neck Counties and other parts of Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and
other states. The authors state that although certain record books have been
lost, the order books still exist and evidence of wills once extant are noted
therefrom. Some of the lost wills have been found and are included in full.
Long abstracts of wills are given. The book is printed on permalife paper and
is well done in all aspects.
A CHRONICLE OF TWO PIONEER FAMILIES. THE BENTONS AND THE TAYlDRS OF THE NORTH
CAROLINA BACK COUNTRY, by Alma Cheek Redden (1969), 59 pages, soft
cover, index. Order from the author, P. O. Box 851, Hillsborough,
North Carolina 27278. Price $4.00.
This book is written principally to give the North Carolina background of the
Family of Thomas Hart Benton, the first Senator of the State of Missouri. It is
a chronicle of two families whose pioneer founders, Samuel Benton of Oxford and
John Taylor of Chapel Hill, settled in the Back Country of North Carolina prior
to the American Revolution. Of interest to genealogists will be the source
materials-records preserved in the North Carolina Department of Archives and
History and county courthouse documents, specifically land grants, deeds and
wills. County seats from which material was obtained were Caswell, Edgecombe,
Granville, Halifax, Johnston, Orange, Wake and Warren Counties. It is an
interesting and well written history of two pioneer families.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN RIVES, by Alberta Kitchell Allen (1969), 117 pages, soft
cover, no index or table of contents but well organized. Order from
the author, Rives, Tennessee 38253. Price: $3.26.
A history of Rives, Obion County, Tennessee. It is the story of a town a little
more than one hundred years old. Compiled from previously published history, old
newspapers, town and school records (there are over one hundred pictures), and
from information as related by the older citizens, some of which had been handed
down to them by their parents. The little book recalls pleasant memories of the
people, their houses, businesses, churches and schools, all of which are so
typical of rural Tennessee. Here you may rediscover your home town and its people.
NEWSPAPER GLEANINGS, RANDOLPH COUNTY, INDIANA 1873-1883, PART I, by Katherine
Wilke (1969), 89 pages, soft back, index. Order from the author,
Route 3, Box 138, Union City, Indiana 47390. Price: $6.00.
Information from original papers in the Union City Public Library such as: deaths,
marriage licenses, weddings, anniversaries, court-house items, etc., listing of
people living in and around the cities of Deerfield, Saratoga and Randolph in the
1847 Atlas, individuals living in or near the city of Winchester from the 1874
Atlas, and names of persons of Wayne Township given in a 1909 Plat Book are
included in the book.

1820 FEDERAL CENSUS OF NORTH CAROLINA, VOLUME II, ASHE COUNTY, by Dorothy Williams
Potter (1970), 40 pages, soft binder, index. Order from the author,

Ashe County, formed in 1799 from Wilkes County, was named in honor of Samuel Ashe,
a Revolutionary Patriot, superior court judge and governor of the State. The
county, in the northwest part of the state, touches Tennessee and Virginia.
Jefferson is the county seat. An 1820 and a current map of North Carolina are
provided in a face to face position for easy comparison. This book would be of
great value for those who have trouble with microfilm. This is one of a series
of similar publications involving other counties of North Carolina.

The book is a complete reprint of more than three hundred columns from the
Shreveport Journal, March 1963 through December 1968. The extensive index, 90
pages, of more than nine thousand surnames and the nationwide circulation of
ANCESTOR HUNTING should make this book of interest to genealogists around the
nation. It is an impressive volume.
HISTORY OF OLD TISHOMINGO COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI TERRITORY, by Fan Alexander Cochran
(1969), 377 pages, offset printing, hardback, index. Order from
Mrs. Paul R. Cochran, 3200 N. W. 35th Street, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
73112. Price: $12.50.
A review of the story of Old Tishomingo County, Mississippi Territory, from the
date of its surrender by the Chickasaw Indians to the year 1870, found in old
newspapers unearthed from trunks, chests, attics and records from newspapers
published soon after the turn of the century. The names of settlers, marriage
records, names and rank of Confederate soldiers. biographical studies of prominent
men of the times and interesting items about the settlers and stories of events
are retold. If any of your ancestors stopped a while here, this book is a mine
of precious gems and gold for you. Much material has been documented. A very
good book.
THE POWELL FAMILIES OF VIRGINIA AND THE SOUTH, compiled and published by The
Rev. Fr. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., (1969), 584 pages, hard back. Order
from Georgia Genealogical Reprints, 405 Virginia Way, Vidalia,
Georgia 30474. Price: $15.00.
The author of ''The Powell Family of Norfolk and Elizabeth City Counties, Virginia,"
has done with this book in a far more comprehensive way, what he did for The
Dodson Families. The present book is an Encyclopedia in every sense of the word
and a must for anyone doing Powell research. There are eight (8) sections
(Volumes?), each dealing with a major branch of the Powell family and their
distribution by counties in the states of the South.

WILLIAM BOYDSTON
Revolutionary Pension Application #S-30-l1
Cocke County, State of Tennessee
On this 27th day of May 1832, personally appeared before the Justices of the Court
of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, for the County aforesaid, William Boydston, a resident citizen of Cocke County, who after being duly sworn made the following declarations in order to obtain the benefits of the Act of Congress passed the 7th of
June 1832. That he is aged eighty years, was born in Frederick County, Maryland
the 24th of March 1753. That his father emigrated to Hampshire County, Virginia
when he was small, where he was principally raised, and again removed into
Montgomery County, Virginia where he resided until 1776 when the Shawnee and
Cherokee Indians were in hostility. In June 1777 declarant volunteered under
Capt. Patton and enrolled at Fort Chapell. In 1780 he removed from Virginia to
Washington County, N.C. and settled on the Nolichucky. In October he was drafted
under Capt. Dougherty, marched through the mountains to join General Marion and
was under his command until the operation of his term of time. He volunteered in
1781 under Col. Sevier in Capt. Allison's Company. In which four several terms as
set forth he served fourteen months, for which he claims a pension or annuity.
That he has lost, in the lapse of time, all his discharges and knows no one by
whom he can establish the actual service, nor has he any documentary evidence.
There are no citizens of his vicinity known to him, and he to them, by whom he
can establish reputati@n of his service, there being no resident Minister of the
Gospel in his vicinity by whom he can establish the same.
He hereby relinquishes his every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except
the present and declares that his name is not on the roll of the agency in any
other state. Sworn to and subscribed in open court 27 May 1833

We, John Fugat and William Boydston, resident citizens of Cocke County, Tennessee,
certify that we are well acquainted with the said William Boydston; that he resides in our county; that we believe him to be eighty years of age and that he is
reputed and believed, in the neighborhood of our residence and his, to have been
a Revolutionary Soldier, and that we concur in that opinion.

And the said Court do certify that after the investigation of the matter and
interrogation prescribed by the War Department that we are satisfied that the
said William Boydston was a Revolutionary Soldier and served as he states. We do
further certify that John Fugat and William Faubion who have made the above affidavit are citizens of Cocke County and are reputable and their statements entitled
to credit. Sworn to and subscribed in open court 27 May 1833.

"Be it remembered that at a Regular Quarterly term of the County Court of
Cocke County begun and held for the County of Cocke at the Court House in Newport
Depot on the first Monday in January 1877, it being the first day of said month
and of the American Independence the One hundred and first year"Present and presiding W.W. Bibee, chairman, and the following other Justices
to wit.-C.H. Jones, J.J. Burnett, L.W. Merriman, J.S. Davis, J.A. Buckner, G.J. Thomas,
C.D. Fairfield, Wm Phillips, Joseph Rutherford, J.C. McNabb, Robert Mantooth, John
Butler, Isaac Allen, Cary Denis, Daniel Hedrick, W.B. Allison, W.R. Harrison,
Asberry Fowler, John Ford and S.C. Berry,
When and where the following proceedings were held and entered of record to wit.
"It being this day suggested to the Court that on the morning of the 30th of
December 1876. the Court House at Newport Depot in the County of Cocke was accidentally burned down with fireIn which was burned all of the records and papers belonging to the office of clerk
of the County Court and that nothing remains to refer to. the only source of information that can be obtained will be from the recollection of parties interested,
memorandums they may have, and from the recollection of the different officers of
said County"It being also reported to the Court that all of the Records & paper belonging
to the office's of the Clerk of the Circuit Court, and Chancery Court of the
County of Cocke, as well as all of the Records of the Registers office of Cocke
County except Book N 17. were burned at the same time, as well as a part of the
Records of the Entrytakers and surveyors office of the County." (p.l)

The Court is pleased to Order and doth so decree,--that all claims for and
against the county be supplied with and from the best evidence that can be had.

That the Tax Book for 1876 be supplied in the same way

That all claims issued against the County be presented to the proper officers
to be refiled and mimbered (numbered?),

That the clerks of this court is required to make out as near as he can a
Statement of all the unfinished business in the Court including a memorandum, of all
the Petitions filed for the partition of Real Estate, whether for distribution or
for partition with all of the orders made at each term of the Court in each case, as
near as he can recollect

That the clerk of this Court purchase all necesary Books for the use of all
the different offices of this County, And that all the business done in the court
from this time shall begin at No.1. because all of the former numbers has been
destroyed

That he make report as near as he can the result of any or of all of the
settlements made with the different guardians for Minors.

He make Report as near as he can the result of the settlement made with the
fidderent Administraters and Executors, and in doing so he may call to his aid any
or all of the parties with whom he has made settlements.

The clerk on making our and supplying any of the Cost records, will be authorized to call to his aid any of the County officers attornies of citizens that can

-85ELISHA T. CONDLEY OBITUARY

Died, at Cross Timbers, Missouri, after an illness of about three months, Elisha
Condley, aged 83 years. Mr. Condley was born in Halifax County, Virginia, Nov.
21st, 1814, and moved with his father Anderson Condley to Giles County, Tennessee,
in 1830, where he was married in 1837 to Miss Elizabeth Beck, which bond existed
until death separated them by claiming his most amiable and loving companion in
February 10th, 1897. Mr. Condley came to Missouri to look for a future home for
himself and young wife in 1838, and visited the Queen City of the Ozarks when it
was but a very small village having only one small general store, a blacksmith
shop and a few cabins. After having decided to emigrate to Missouri, Mr. Condley
returned to his home in Tennessee and made arrangements to move the next spring
and in the spring of 1839 he came to what was then Benton county and settled on
the ridge about five miles northeast of ()uincy where he resided till the spring of
1847, when he moved to the place which is still known by his name on Turkey Creek,
in South Benton County, where he resided till the spring of 1873, when he removed
to Cross Timbers, Mo.

Mr. Condley was a past master in the Masonic fraternity and a member of the
Christian Church, having united with the church in 1853, and lived a consistent
and faithful Christian life until claimed by death at which time he was an Elder
in the church at Cross Timbers.
Mr. Condley was the father of five children, two sons and three daughters. One
of his sons, Beverly, died when a child but four years old, and Calvin M., died
of small pox at St. Louis, Mo., in 1864 while serving as a soldier in the United
States Army, and who was twenty-one years old at the time of his death. The three
daughters, Mrs. Ann E. Williams, wife of V.S. Williams; Mrs. Mary Ihri.g, widow of
Jno. B. Ihrig; and Mrs. Martha Rhea, wife of Eli T. Rhea, survive to mourn the
loss of a kind and loving father, who has gone to rest and to reap the reward of
a well spent life and who might well have said, "I have fought a good fight, I
have finished my course, I have kept the faith, henceforth there is laid up for me
a crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge shall give me at that
day. I have not within the dark vale to abide, "tis but to walk through to the
opposite Side; and men the shadow, no darness can wear, Since Thou, blessed Jesus,
will shine on one there. There, under Thy shadow my soul finds its rest; and
dwelling in Jesus, I know I am ....•... " (end of quotation missing).

and state of Tennessee, are held and firmly bound unto the Governor of the said
state, for the time being, in the sum of twelve hundred and fifty dollars, to be
paid to his excellency, his successors in office, or assigns; to which payment
well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heir~ executors and administrators, and each and every of us and them, both jointly and severally, firmly
by these presents. Winess our hands and seals the 20th day of Febry IR24.
The condition of the above obligation is such, that Whereas Eli Massey hath prayed
and obtained license to marry Mary Davis.
Now if the said Mary Davi~ be an actual resident in the aforesaid county, and there
shall not hereafter appear any laWful c~use why the said Eli Massey an.d Mary Davis
should not be joined together in Holy Mlltrimony, I1S husband and wife, then this

KNOW ALL MEN, That we Thomas Davis and Calvin Donnell of the county of Wilson and
state of Tennessee, are held and firmly bound unto the Governor of the said state,
for the time being in the Sum of twelve hundred and fifty dollars, to be paid to
his excellency, his successors in office, or assigns; to which payment well and
truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators, and
each and every of us and them, both jointly and severally, firmly by these presents.

For and in consideration of the Sum of fifty dollars paid to Eli Massey and Mary
his wife and the sum of seventy five dollars paid to John S. Williams and his wife
Charity and the sum of seventy five dollars to Thomas Pentecost and his wife Sarah
and the sum of two hundred dollars paid to Robert Davis, heirs of Archibald Davis,
deceased, have bargained and sold and do hereby convey to Thomas Davis and his
heirs and assigns forever our undivided interest in and to the tract of land on
which said deceased lived at the time of his death and of which he died seized
and possessed situate lying and being in the County of Wilson and State of Tennessee
in the 10th District on Spring Creek containing by estimation one hundred and sixty
eight acres be the same more or less to have and to hold the same to the said
Thomas Davis his'heirs and assigns forever. We do covenant with the said Thomas
Davis that we are lawfully seized of said land have a good right to convey it and
that the same is unincumbered. \'.'e do further covenant and bind ourselves, our
heirs and representatives to warrant and forever defend the title to the said
land and every part thereof to the said Thomas Davis his heirs and ass ignes against
the lawful claims of all persons whatever.
