In 1967, a group of
concerned residents formed
the Community Design
Committee and worked with
individual property owners
E AST WASHINGTON
to restore the Square to its
pre-WWII appearance.
Building by building, modern
updates and signs were
removed and historic facades
revealed or rebuilt. Within
eight years, the Square
was largely restored to its
historic beauty – all with
E AST SMITH
private funding. The district
was placed on the National
Register of Historic Places
in 1975.
From 1970 to 2000,
Medina’s population grew
by 130%. In response, the
community built new
schools, Performing Arts
and Recreation Centers, an
expanded library and a
parking deck. Offering
a vibrant mix of attractions,
events, retail and eateries,
Medina welcomes thousands
of visitors each year.

Historic
District
Medina grew slowly as
an agricultural community
and as the legal hub of
county business. As early as
1835 it was incorporated
as the Village of Medina.
The larger Historic
Courthouse on theWEST
SE corner

of Liberty and Broadway
was dedicated in 1841. It
survived the great fires of
1848 and 1870, the later of
which virtually destroyed
the entire Square. The
District was rebuilt with
brick in the late 1800s, and
endures as an outstanding
example of late Victorian
commercial architecture.
