The Pride of Penngrove
Penngrove put on a big show once again this
year when the 32nd annual Penngrove Parade
set off from Penngrove Park, located right
next to the present-day Firehouse. The parade,
which began as a barbecue in 1951, is organized
by our Penngrove Social Firemen, the longtime

Penngrove’s 32nd
4th of July Parade
The Pride of Penngrove - Continued from cover
earlier by a group of volunteer firefighters. It slowly made its way
up Main Street right on time at 11 am on Sunday, July 1st, a
gloriously sunny summer’s day. The celebrations continued with
the Social Firemen’s barbecue and an afternoon of great food,
fun and music in the park.
One of the biggest crowds organizers could remember thronged
Main Street from one end to the other to watch and cheer what
has long been dubbed “the biggest little parade in Northern California.” Encapsulating the pride, patriotism and old-fashioned
tradition of Fourth of July in Penngrove, our military families
led a vibrant procession of fire trucks, tractors, school children,
vintage cars, military trucks. Local horsewomen in their ruffled
skirts rode red, white and blue-clad horses and miniature ponies,
past the brightly-colored crowds that gathered outside the Black
Cat Bar and John’s Café which, along with Vinnie’s Deli and
the Penngrove Pub, were open early and doing a brisk business.
The gleaming red vintage fire engines rang their bells merrily, paving the way for the Shriners in their Arabian silk
pantaloons, followed by a platoon of old veterans and wives
of soldiers serving overseas; there was the Penngrove Panthers
school float from where the girls and boys threw red, white and
blue Tootsie Rolls and Mardi Gras beads as they passed by the
jubilant crowd which carried everything from flags and banners
to morning Bloody Marys.

truck by the Fire Chief.
As many as forty tractors of every vintage followed a convoy of
trucks, adorned in red, white and blue, as horns blared and the
exhaust fumes suggested that not all the vehicles were smog-test
ready; some of the classic cars included a ’39 Nash, an old Mafia
car, and a vintage van, pulling a float full of beautiful blooms
courtesy of Passanisi’s Nursery.
The Mothers of Military Service-members, local women who
support the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, released a flock of
doves to honor fallen troops, and were awarded best in the color
guard category, while other winners included four-year-old Kayla

Inside Penngrove
Here we will highlight local social, cultural, and other events of interest, as well as an inside look at local businesses and their owners, focusing specifically on one each issue. This issue we feature Kim Hanson’s JavAmoré.
JavAmoré is quite literally a dream come true
for Kim Hanson, the proprietor of the downhome, downtown Penngrove café.
hometown feel of it. It’s very unique, and
you can tell that with the events they have
going on here, like the parade in July.”
Kim opened JavAmoré in November 2002, as
a second career, having worked in the wondrous world of insurance for 25 years. When
the company offered early retirement, she
took them up on it. With no real background
in restaurants, Kim bought an espresso truck
and drove it around Petaluma to different
businesses, serving coffee and pastries in the
morning, as well as at soccer tournaments and
the Farmer’s Market in Petaluma.
All the meals are homemade at JavAmoré,
prepared by Kim and her eight part-time
employees. “We have soup every day – we
make homemade pies, cup cakes. We want
people to feel like they’re sitting down to
their grandmother’s Sunday brunch, like
they used to.”
Coming up on five years now, JavAmoré has become a local fixture for breakfast coffee, bagels
and egg sandwiches, but also pulls in a lunch
crowd from the small business parks down the street
with an expansive menu
of up to sixteen different
sandwiches and seven different salads. “I wanted it
to have the unique charm
that Penngrove has,” Kim
explained.
“Penngrove
is about the same age as
Petaluma, but they haven’t
gone through any kind of
major development here,
because it’s a ranching

Meanwhile around town, Erin Fleming’s
Repeat After Me, a quality household and
furniture consignment shop located next
to the park has just celebrated its 1st year
in business. Check out some of the unusual
and charming items Erin has collected and
don’t miss what she and Passanisi’s Nursery have done to the gardens at the side
of the building. The Black Cat Bar is also
celebrating an anniversary next month,
their 5th year of fun and entertainment
on Main St. Look for special celebrations
happening there. Colorful new blooms
can be seen on Adobe Road, just up from
Main St., thanks to flower grower, Dutch’s

flowers and are selling fresh picked blooms
right out of the field.

“I did that for four years,” she recalled. “but

Head, and Nave Patrola, a multi-generation formation that
marched down the street doing silly walks and playing with the
youngsters in the crowd.
Everyone then adjourned to the park for BBQ, live music and to
check out the booths of local merchants and business folk. The
famous "old-fashioned" pit beef, cooked by the Social Firemen
was a huge hit; the logs had been burning in the pit since midnight, and the sides of beef wrapped in butcher paper were slapped
on the hot coals It took a forklift to drop a huge metal plate on top
of the beef, while elsewhere everyone enjoyed a mouth-watering
menu of barbecued oysters, along with chicken, hamburgers, hot
dogs and potato salad, washed down with copious quaffs of beer
and soda. Home-made desserts, proceeds from which benefit the
4H club, were also available, while old-time Western tunes, live
on the bandstand, serenaded the hungry diners.

Country music
pioneer; longtime
Penngrove resident
He was born in Mountain View and raised in the
city of San Francisco near the Union Stockyards,
where he began working as a butcher at age 15.
“It wasn’t the San Francisco of today,” Sal once recalled. “Folks
were driving cattle in the area where Third Street is now.” From
a musical family Sage soon began moonlighting at local honkytonks and was rarely seen without his guitar, decorated with an
inlaid mother-of-pearl cattle skull and crossed six-shooters. His
passion for music was only matched by his love for cattle and
horses, and by the age of 19 he was composing advertising jingles
for the H. Moffett Meat Co. and traveled to all the H. Moffett
Beef outlets promoting their product by singing the jingle.
A regular performer at the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale for
nearly three decades and at the Grand National Livestock Exposition, held at the Cow Palace, for almost as long, Sal was also
a regular at Gravenstein Apple Fair in Sebastopol, as well as the
Sonoma, Paso Robles and Petaluma fairs and many other cowboy

Sal was also a frequent movie extra and a familiar voice behind
many national TV commercials, including Cherokee Jeep, Swanson T.V. dinners, MJB Coffee and M & M's. Retiring in the Nineties, he moved to a small ranch in Lincoln, Nebraska with his
wife Georgia where they raised horses and cattle, but his love
for music never diminished, as he continued to promote the traditional western and country sounds that he loved to younger
generations. He will be sorely missed by fans all across America
as well as those from the small town of Penngrove that was such
a big part of his life for so long.
His first band was called Sal Sage and the Happy Rangers which became Sal Sage and the Sonoma Mountain Boys" and later Sal Sage
and the Sage Gang. He recorded three albums – "Songs of the Old
West," Volumes I, II, and III, which including many old time country
classics like his signature "The Cattle Call" and many others from the
likes of Autry as well as Hank Williams Sr., Bob Wills, Ernest Tubbs,
and Hank Snow. His own compositions included "Just the Little Town
of Penngrove" which he wrote while sitting by the railroad track with
a truck load of cattle, waiting for a train to clear the crossing.

During his Penngrove years, Sal rode horses and
fed cattle by day and played house parties or dances at the local roping arena by night. He half-joked
that when he was getting up to go to his day job,
his socks were often still warm from playing music
the night before. He appeared at numerous events
all around the Bay area, including Herzog Hall
in Petaluma, the Veterans' Memorial Building in
Sonoma and Penngrove's Woman's Club House,
among many other hay barns and dance halls that
have long since been torn down.

to his idol Gene Autry, Sage was one of the last
great singing cowboy entertainers and a fixture in

Penngrove Elementary
School News
i
With the playground once again filled with eager and excited children, Penngrove Elementary School started its 2007/2008 school
year on July 18th. This is earlier
than some other schools in the
area as Penngrove Elementary is
on a year-round schedule, but it
works out to be the same number
of school days, just in different
length semesters and vacation
times. The summer vacation is
almost six weeks long while the
Fall and Spring breaks are three
weeks in length and the Winter
break still two weeks. From the
looks on the children’s faces,
they were happy to be back in
class and ready to start the new
school year.
This short
introduction
to our town’s
colorful history
will continue in
future issues of
The Proud.
Old hardworking machinery that helped shape Penngrove
According to historical reports, there are a number of stories regarding
the provenance of Penngrove’s name. Ruth Anderson, once known as
the "Bell-Lady" of Penngrove – she lived on the site of the old schoolhouse on Oak Street – recalled, "In the late 1860s, two brothers by
the name of Penn came out from Pennsylvania and bought 80 acres of
land in this area. They planted the area with olive trees, but when the
trees matured it was found that the olives were not edible. The Penn
brothers tore out many of the groves, sold the land and moved away.
However, while they were here, they named their place Penn's Grove.
Later it was changed to Penn Grove, and still later, because our mail
got confused with that of Pine Grove (the former name of Sebastopol),
the U.S. Post Office changed the name to one word – Penngrove."
A new track was installed over Spring Break
Some other changes for Penngrove School this year include the
addition of an afternoon Kindergarten class, along with the hiring
of three new teachers and a new running track that was installed
over Spring break that has turned out to be very popular with the
children. Keep your eye on this space for upcoming school events.
Other accounts suggest that Penn's Grove in New Jersey caused
the Post Office to change the name, or that the Woodward family,
who also hailed from Pennsylvania, named their property Penn's
Grove in honor of their home state. Even earlier, the area had
been the home of the native Miwok tribe before Mexico granted
Rancho Cotate to a Captain Juan Castenada in 1844 for his military services in the region. The grant encompassed present-day
Penngrove, Cotati and Rohnert Park.

Rancho Cotate was sold in 1849 to Dr. Thomas S. Page, of Cotati, and
eventually broken up and sold off piecemeal to incoming settlers. The
first settlers in the Penngrove area were reported to be David Wharff,
W.J. Hardin, and J.M. Palmer who arrived in 1852. In October 1870,
the San Francisco and North Pacific Railroad completed the first railroad from Petaluma to Santa Rosa, which ran through present-day
Penngrove and established the roots of our present day town.

By Virginia Drury
This quaint poem was written by Yvonne,
a little girl of around 10 years old in 1936.
She lived in England just south of London,
and as a child was a little in awe of her
strict grandmother. Her Grandma was
born, raised and influenced by the
Victorian era. Her relationship with her
grandaughter, although loving,
reflected her own strict upbringing.
STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE SQUARES
CRUST
2 cups All-purpose Flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2/3 cup butter
WHEN GRANDMA WAS A GIRL
When Grannie was a girl like me her frock she never tore,
and NEVER spilt the ink all down her clean white pinafore.
She never minded going to bed, and NEVER GOT UP LATE,
and never made grimaces at the food upon her plate.
FILLING
1lb cream cheese, softened
3/4 Granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp lemon juice
1 cup strawberry jam
1 cup chopped fresh strawberries
Preheat Oven to 350°F. Grease a 13"x9" cake pan. Combine flour and
sugar in medium bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender or two knives
until crumbly. Press in prepared pan. Bake in centre of oven for 15-20
minutes or until lightly golden. Cool on rack while preparing filling.
HER hair was always neatly brushed and never out of curl,
I'm very glad I wasn't born, when Grannie was a girl.
Filling: Beat cream cheese and sugar in large mixer bowl on medium
speed until smooth. Add eggs and lemon juice, beating until smooth.
Spread jam evenly over crust. Sprinkle strawberries on top. Pour
cream cheese mixture evenly over strawberries. Bake 25-30 minutes
longer or until set. Cool completely on rack. Cut into squares.
In Grannie's time the little girls were seen, but never HEARD,
They never dared to interrupt their elders by a word.
THEY ALWAYS DID AS THEY WERE TOLD, and never
murmured "WHY',
And never hid round corners and jumped out at passers by.
CHOCOLATE CHIP DATE CAKE
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1 cup dates, chopped 1 tsp soda
1/2 cup shortening 1 cup sugar
2 eggs beaten
THEY COULDN'T PLAY AT CRICKET, and a TREE they
MUST NOT CLIMB, SUCH THINGS WERE MOST
UNLADYLIKE, they said, in Grannie's time.
But when I'm old like Grannie - just to make things right and fair,
When MY grandchildren ask for tales, and cluster round my chair,
I'll put my glasses on like this, and shake my head - you know,
And tell them all how good I was in the DAYS OF LONG AGO.
And when they're cross or naughty, and the place is in a whirl,
I'll say, "HOW DIFFERENT CHILDREN WERE, WHEN
GRANNIE WAS A GIRL."
1 1/2 cups sifted all purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tsp soda
1 pkg. chocolate chips (small)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Pour boiling water over dates, add soda and let cool. Cream shortening and sugar together, add beaten egg, and date mixture. Stir in
flour, salt and soda sifted together. Beat well and pour into greased
9x9" or 7x11" pan. Sprinkle batter with chocolate chips, brown sugar
and nuts. Bake at 350° F. for 45 - 50 minutes.

A little bit about myself: I have lived in Sonoma County since
1990 with a little time spent away, long enough to realize how
much I really missed it. A haven such as Penngrove is rare to
find in this day and age, to be able to know your neighbor and
walk safely around town, exploring the quaint and venerable
buildings tucked away from Main Street, or the beautiful countryside surrounding us.
ASK YOUR
NEIGHBOR
I have a daughter who is in her 3rd year at Penngrove Elementary school, and I feel so lucky to have her come home from
school and say, “I had a great day. I love school.” This is due to a
wonderful team of caring and intelligent staff and its small-town
attentiveness to each and every student - one more reason to
be proud of Penngrove, and to be inspired to keep it a safe and
sound community.

Jay Palm’s Saddle Shop, the only full service premium western wear store and saddle shop in northern California. Started
in the early 50’s by the late Jim Palm in a chicken house on Ely Rd. We moved to “D” Street and then on to Petaluma
Boulevard until June 2005. We currently call home 5701 Old Redwood Hwy. The old “Penngrove Hatchery Building”. This
great freestanding red brick building has been a perfect fit. Vacant since the 70’s, the building has gone through a huge
renovation to bring it up to current seismic retrofit rules, The outside is the same as when it was built in 1918.
Jay Palm’s Saddle Shop has always relied on premium products and the best in customer service, just like my father.
We still build saddles by hand and have the only full service repair shop in the area. We carry all the major lines in western
wear. Wrangler, Roper, Cruel Girl, Rookies and Cinch. Boots by Tony Lama, Justin, Double H, and Lucchese. Our friendly
staff is always here to help you get the right fit. Hats by Stetson and Resistol. We still hand shape all straw and felt cowboy
hats. We stock the basics and all the way up to premium felt hats made from beaver and mink.
With the largest selection from head to toe,
you will always be satisfied at Jay Palm’s.
