NYLAG
 YISROEL SCHULMAN, ESQ.
President & Attorney-in-Charge
PARALEGAL CASE HANDLER
Disability Advocacy Unit
New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG)
NYLAG has an opening for a paralegal case handler to handle disability appeals. The position can be
filled immediately but this is flexible. It must be filled by August 1, 2013. Applicants for this position
must be fluent in Spanish.
The position is in NYLAG’s General Legal Services Unit (GLS). The successful candidates will primarily
handle cases that fall within the scope of NYLAG’s State-funded Disability Advocacy Project; these are
cases in which impoverished New Yorkers who receive public benefits have been inappropriately denied
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. Specific
responsibilities include conducting intake interviews of individuals denied SSI and SSDI benefits,
obtaining and reviewing medical records, researching federal regulations and medical journals, and
representing clients at hearings. The paralegal will carry his or her own case load.
This position is an ideal opportunity for individuals interested in a career in law, public policy, or social
work. Applicants must be prepared to handle a high volume of cases and to interact with a diverse client
population in a sensitive and professional manner. Applicants must have excellent analytical skills so as
to assess whether clients have a legal basis for appeal based on medical evidence. No medical
background is necessary for the position but applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to
public service and have strong writing skills. The successful candidates will work closely with NYLAG’s
experienced attorneys and case handlers, and will receive both on-the-job and more formal training.
Priority will be given to those who have worked for New York City legal or social services organizations.
College degree required.
NYLAG is a not-for-profit law office that provides free civil legal services for low-income New Yorkers.
GLS helps low-income individuals of all ages in the areas of public benefits law, elder law, employment
law, and housing law. Staff attorneys, paralegals, and volunteer case handlers secure Home Care,

government support services for eligible, low-income individuals. GLS staff members also conduct
educational seminars for health care professionals, social workers, advocates, and the general community
about accessing benefits and specialized areas of law.
To be considered for these positions, please send a cover letter and a resume to Michelle Spadafore at
[email protected]. We will ask for writing samples and references before interviewing. Position to
be filled as soon as possible.
