Your visit includes an engaging game matching an animal to its habitat, meeting one of the Nature Center's resident animals and exploring the trails in the Nature Study Area Preserve. These direct experiences encourage both children and adults to feel more connected with the natural world. Scientific research shows that exposure to nature provides for positive healthy childhood development and improved emotional and physical health of children. Your visit to the Effie Yeaw Nature Center begins with an interpretive talk introducing a live non-­releasable animal representing a native species of the Sacramento region. Your guide will then lead you on a nature walk on trails in the Nature Area Preserve, showcasing a Sacramento oak riparian habitat. Upon returning to the Nature Center building, your program continues with an exploration of the Discovery Room and live Sacramento region animals. Our Discovery Shop will also be open for you. Nisenan Maidu Focus: Nature Area Tour 3rd -­ 6th grades This tour focuses on the Valley Nisenan Maidu people and their relationship with the environment of the Sacramento Valley. The presentation includes a tour of the replica Nisenan village and a brief explanation of the territory, language and cultural traditions of the Maidu. Natural resources and material culture will be explored through a hands-­on replica artifact activity and guided hike through the Nature Study Area Preserve. Held during the summer months, fall, winter and spring breaks, these day camps focus on natural and cultural awareness and environmental education. Children can participate in hikes and experience hands-­on nature activities including hikes, crafts, field trips, nature games and other fun, educational activities. Family Nature Programs and Activities Free programs for families visiting the nature center are offered every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. These presentations are first come, first serve. Space is limited. A $25 service charge will be assessed for each additional time a program or service is rescheduled by request. Programs will NOT be rescheduled less than 30 days before the program date. Cancellations: Any program cancelled more than 2 weeks from the program date will have a cancellation fee of $25 or 10%, whichever is more. Any program cancelled within 2 weeks of the program date will NOT be refunded. Group Size: Program fees are based on the number of all participants as well as the program delivered. See program descriptions for fees. A refund will not be given if fewer students attend than the number of students listed on the invoice. Supervision: The teacher and adult volunteers are responsible for supervision and must remain with the students at all times. Weather: Programs are delivered rain or shine. If the EYNC staff determines the conditions are unsafe, an alternate indoor program will be delivered. In the very rare event the CHP requests drivers stay off the roads due to unsafe conditions caused by extreme weather, EYNC staff will reschedule the program. Quantity Rates: Special rates apply only when two or more of the same classroom-­based programs are presented on the same day at the same location. Area Served and Travel Fees: Schools or organizations more than 15 miles away from EYNC will be charged a fee of 55 1/2 cents per mile for outreach programs for each additional mile (�round-­trip)� for staff travel expenses. Unscheduled Groups: Groups without scheduled programs are welcome in the Nature Center and Nature Area after 1:00 p.m. Unscheduled or walk-­in groups are required to pay County Park entrance fees: $5 per car (�$8 on Holiday weekends)� or $20 per bus/van. A variety of animal species live in or use the nature preserve and Ancil Hoffman Park throughout the year. In July 2010, ARHNA was chosen by the County of Sacramento to take over operations and funding of the Effie Yeaw Nature Center and the 77-­acre preserve that surrounds it. We are committed to continuing the excellent, award-­winning Nature Center programs that introduce thousands of school children each year to the beauty and diversity of the American River Parkway.
