OUR PAST—Part III
We are only 3 weeks away
from our Grand Jubilee Mass
with Bishop Michael Barber
on July 10th. This special
Mass will be celebrated at
10:00AM. Please remind your friends and family that
our regularly scheduled Sunday Masses at 8:30am,
11:00am and the Polish Mass at 12:30 will be merged
into this one big celebration at 10:00am.
This week, we continue to share some recollections and reflections about the history of our Parish. Today we publish some of the personal reflections and experiences of another long time parishioner, ZENY BARAAN.
“My family members have been parishioners
for 40 years. Our children and grandchildren have
received catechetical instruction and the sacraments
of baptism, reconciliation, 1st communion, confirmation and marriage here (…)
In the past, in the main altar of the Church
was the cross of Jesus, and then it was replaced with
the replica of Our Lady of Good Counsel. The chairs
used for services were replaced by donated pews
and flooring was re-constructed. Since there was no
hall, some parish social functions were held in the
church or in front of the church. Catechetical instruction with diligent teachers divided classes into sections inside the church to accommodate students (…)
There were also devotions started by dearly
departed Mrs. Parafina for our Lady of Penafrancia
with processions from the Church to the Marina Park
with participation of children dressed in white. On Holy Friday, the station of the cross was also done outside the church. There was the Simbang Gabi (a Filipino tradition). Devotion to the Black Nazarene was
also started by Gloria Garcia in 2000. These are done
up to now in addition to the other novenas (…)
Some of our previous parishioners have chosen to follow the path of the Lord: our dearly departed

Noe Tuason is now a deacon serving at Saint John
the Baptist Church in San Lorenzo; and Geoffrey F.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
It’s almost midsummer day! One of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar occurs this week. There are only
three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the
Blessed Mother (September 8), and the Nativity of Saint John
the Baptist on June 24. Friday’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own
child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a
year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions
around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches
its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people
staying up all night, kindling “St. John’s Fires” in the long
summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all
these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence
in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France.
You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto
Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea
between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your
way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach this week and plunge in
to recall your baptism? It’s a tradition!

As we pray for peace and end of violence let us pray for our
members of our community serving as missionaries and those
in the military.
Q. Can divorced individuals become godparents
or sponsors for baptism and confirmation?
A. If the person in question is living a life in keeping with the Church’s expectations for someone in
Catholic
that situation, yes.

On the other hand, if the person does not have a
Church annulment and is in a romantic relationship
or has attempted remarriage outside the Church, then that person is
not living "a life of faith that befits the role to be undertaken [i.e., baptismal or confirmation sponsor]," as required by canon law (CIC 874),
and so another candidate for the role should be chosen
Q. Why were God's commandments limited to ten? It seems that the
additions of “Thou shall not rape,” “Thou shall not condone slavery,”
and “Thou shall not abuse children” would all be appropriate additions
to the list.
A. There are only ten commandments in the Old Testament because
those commandments are a synthesis of the natural law. Other sins
are classified by moral theologians under the existing Old Testament
commandments. The additions you suggest would fit in various places
under commandments 4–10, which deal with how to treat other people.
(Matt. 25:32–33) and they are saved by the blood that he shed for
them (Matt. 26:28).
