The Clifford Trail system starts at Rotary Park across from the arena and leads to several
distinct areas of interest. Parking is free and there is no charge for enjoying our trails.
Follow the blue markers. Hikers, bicycles, and mobility-assist vehicles are welcome, but
the natural areas are only accessible to hikers, snowshoers and cross country skiers.
The Recreational Trail is an easy walk in Rotary Park under trees, along streams and past
soccer and baseball fields. Town streets are used to link this trail with the natural areas.
Natural trails are rougher, often wet areas with minimal maintenance. The James Street
Loop has three natural regrowth areas. The first is a smooth walk past Red Cedars.
The centre, with hundreds of Ash trees, will be left untended. The northwest end will be
planted with hundreds of small trees. Marshal Park, at Geddes and Cecilia, has been left
unchanged since it was donated in 1902. The west end of Park Street road allowance
is an undisturbed natural trail as is the former Rail Line cross trail.

The Harriston Greenway Trail network offers a good selection of walks. A shady bush
trail between the Cemetery and the Blind Line makes a great summer walk. The section
between the Cemetery and the Conservation Area Park has been re-gravelled for walkers
and cyclists. Parks joining the East end trails to West include the swimming pool park, the
Fireman’s park, the Horticulture park on Mill St. and the IODE park on John St. There is
a rustic gazebo carefully constructed by the Kinsmen, tucked in the trees at the front of
IODE park. What a unique gathering spot at the head of the West End trails. Follow the
river from the IODE Park and loop back on the old CN rail line, or turn down the old
CP rail line. A right at the bird feeder leads around the Western Hills loop. A left after
the CP line meets the road and leads around the Fisher loop by the Maitland River one
more time. Both are great cross-country ski routes. Over 1000 native trees and shrubs
have been planted along the river corridor, parks and trails. That’s better habitat for
wildlife and people. Look in this book for the Committee listing for the Greenway and
find out who is making things happen. Check out the Greenway trails. Minto’s finest
scenery is at your back door.

Look for an old steam engine chugging up to Main Street in Palmerston and you’ve
found the White’s Junction Trail. The White’s Junction Trail runs along the former CN rail
line north of the Town of Palmerston. To access the trail follow the signs on Main Street
Palmerston, near the L&M grocery store. In the first block, please make note of the wildlife
and plants. If you look closely you can see Pileated woodpeckers, blue jays, opossums,
herons, deer, hawks, and turtles. A rare patch of prairie grass is located at the junction.
There are more unusual plants along the trail including flowering spurge, trout lilies,
butterfly milkweed, wild bergamot and thimbleweed.
Prairie Grass
Palmerston is home to one of the most northern sightings of tall Prairie grasses, including
Indian grass and Big Blue Stem. The Prairie grass was enhanced in 2005 with over 2,000
plugs thanks to funding provided by the MNR.
Trees
In the spring of 2007 & 2008, as part of the Wellington County Green Legacy Program
the Palmerston Trail Association added a total of 250 trees to the 1000 trees that they
planted in 2004.

There are two old wooden trestle bridges on the trail. Most of these bridges have been
removed, so we are fortunate to have two!
