At our unconventional “convention”- there’s something for everyone: more than 50 workshops
of all levels, 2 evening parties, the wonderful Marketplace at Artiscape, Outsider Art
Fair, Sunday’s Mad Hatter Tea and much more! In its 12th year, Artiscape has become a
premier, national alternative arts event. By combining social gatherings, eclectic shopping,
and fun & challenging workshops, we strive to create a weekend for you to remember.
Take a full schedule of workshops or just a few and relax with a book in the garden
atrium lobby. Come for the weekend or just the afternoon. The goal is a fun, educational

Kick-off Party
The weekend begins with a unique welcoming party on Friday night. This
event includes amazing desserts, gourmet snacks, cocktails and a special
preview of the Artiscape Marketplace. Play some fun carnival-type games
like Plinko, Spinning Wheel and more to win prizes.
Presenting artists will give ongoing, concurrent demonstrations of various
art and design techniques. Each demo is different, just like the wonderful
panel of artists we’ve selected for their skills and unique style. Presenting
artists will be located adjacent to the Marketplace, with small group seating.
This informal “workshop” structure allows for easy mingling, discussion and
the chance to learn from both presenters & attendees. On our artist panel is:

Exploring adding color and tinting vintage black and white photographs

Demonstrating the French art of Cartonnage, creating items from paper

The Marketplace at Artiscape
Saturday 10-5 The beautiful hotel atrium is best of all possible locations for
this year’s Marketplace! Artiscape vendors bring a wide array of alternative art
materials including fine art stamps and accessories, papers, inks, fibers, beads,
cool finds, books and videos. The perfect place to pick up both basic materials
and unusual supplies. Take part in the special Marketplace event on Saturday
afternoon (12:00-3:00) with a scavenger hunt and giveaways!
Selected vendors include: Create & Craft, Mercart, Altered Arts/Mailbox Muse,
Stamplistic, Moveable Parts, Backporch Artessa, Shari Replogle Designs, Artful
Illusions, StencilGirl Products, Flatwoods Folk Arts and more... There’s also the

With our early March date we finally have the opportunity to do an Irish theme! Think
the beauty of Ireland, it’s Celtic treasures, and all this magical Isle has to hold. Watch John
Wayne’s The Quiet Man to get in the mood. Attendees will enjoy this fun, evocative theme...
Going Green- A Collaborative Art Project
What fun- make a piece of Irish inspired art! Anything goes here- an
upcycled creation, jewelry, mixed media, wearable art, etc. as long
as it relates to the theme. Pieces are collected beginning Friday and
displayed en masse to make one large art showing. A silent auction
benefits First Book® literacy initiatives.
Artiscape Studio
A special place is reserved for you...
With work tables and places to lounge; the Artiscape Studio is yours
to play, work and visit with other attendees, 24 hours a day. Exclusive
to Artiscape attendees it’s centrally located by the hotel’s front desk.

Stamp, Stencil and Roll

If you want to be truly original what better way to start than by
making your own tools? In this hands-on process class, you will
make your own stamps by gluing simple materials together. You
will also learn how to cut and punch your own stencils to form
borders and designs. Small paint rollers will be altered to create
even more patterns. At end of the class you will use all of your
newly created “toys” to make decorative papers. These one-of-akind papers will be appropriate for later use in handmade books,
scrapbooks, origami, cards or ATCs. Let your imagination soar! 2

Color Splash

Altered Metal Book Covers

pinned on Pinterest by students of Gaye. Learn how to manipulate metal to give new life to old book covers. You will be shown an
array of techniques to add pattern and dimension, using ordinary
objects, as well as the skills to distress and add a beautiful aged
patina for that age-old look. You’ll leave with completed book covers that are uniquely yours. *Class is outside book covers only. 2

you with sketches to use in your journals or watercolor applications. Working with a cold pressed 140# watercolor block you’ll
learn to lightly sketch a scene. You’ll then compose a picture with
watercolor paints; loading your brush, washing the paper and
adding designed paper verbiage where needed in your work. You
will learn “to eye” the complete scene to know where to place
papers of interest. Sketch, paint and compose your way to a paper

Express Metal Embossing & Patinas

Complete a project using pewter, which is the best metal for embossing. Learn the basic techniques for express metal embossing including the use of embossing plates and stencils, as well as

Somewhere in Time Necklace

Anticlastic Spinning Rings

Learn how to design and fabricate an anticlastic ring. Anticlastic
is a jewelry technique using a sinusoidal stake to stretch metal to
create a concave curve on the outer surface while compressing the
metal to create a convex curve in the middle. The bowl or dome
shape is the ultimate form. You will learn traditional metalworking and silversmithing techniques, i.e., forming, texturing, and
soldering, to make your ring. Choose to accent your ring with
spinning rings, brass objects or gold casting grains. Leave class

Encaustics and Metal Journey

A little bit metal work, a little bit encaustics, a little bit rock and
roll... take a journey to discover the magic that happens when
these two awesome mediums get together! Begin by making
small house-shaped pendants from sheet metal. Then dive in and
find out all of the wonderful things you can do them using vintage ephemera, metal work, patinas, coloring & encaustic techniques. Participants can create five totally different pendants! 2

Micalicious- A Mixed Media Garland

Create a one of a kind, mixed media garland using vintage images, papers, dimensional items (buttons, rhinestone pins, etc.),
sewing, transfers and mica. Your garland will hang from beautiful
fibers that are adorned with buttons and stitching. The translucency of the mica is a wonderful way to enhance your artwork,
and its versatility in how it can be used will amaze you! 2

Molding Paste and the Book

Acrylic molding paste can be used to make beautiful textures and
designs. The unique book covers created by these processes are
quite striking! Book covers are created by painting the molding
paste and mounting on another piece of book board. Covers will

Transfers can be a great addition to collages, quilts and other
mixed media work. There are different ways to transfer photos
and designs, depending on their end use. In this class you will
explore several options for both paper and fabric. A process class,

Architectural Binding

Gelatin printing is all the rage, but you may be a little unsure of
the process. Kari will unlock all the secrets! You will learn how to
make your own printing plates, how to use them, and what to do
with the wonderful stash of papers created! Monoprints without
a press! Kari will share new ways to use your stamps and stencils.

Participants will learn the hemp stitch, reminiscent of the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright, to create a special hardbound hinged
book. One of the more challenging Japanese bindings, but also
one of the most beautiful, and not difficult once shown the way.
Explore traditional bookbinding techniques while working with
linen tape, adhesives and book board; combining the finishing
materials of imported papers, Irish threads and ribbon for harmonious results. Embellish a metal bookmark as a finishing touch. 2

French Cartonnage Box

Cartonnage is the age-old French art of transforming book board,
paper, fabric and trim into beautiful and functional objects. The
juxtaposition of careful construction (left brain) and creative covering choices (right brain) helps explain the lasting fascination
and world-wide appeal of Cartonnage. In this introductory class,
you will learn techniques for building a box, covering and lining
it with decorative paper of your choice, and assembling and attaching a case with a ribbon closure. Ooh-la-la! 2

Floral Fling Paintings

This class was inspired by Monet’s garden in Giverney, France. It
was in full bloom and more than a slight bit wildly overgrown.
Our overpainting techniques will give us foundations for colorful
explosions; our ‘flinging’ will add vitality and a loose airy feel.
Using a pinch of magic, and a few tips and techniques from Kari,
and anyone can paint these flowers. No sketching or painting
experience required to create your own canvas delight! 2

Cameo Appearance

Reliquaries are those fascinating containers in which our most
sacred items are kept. In this class you will use tins, clay, vintage

Create three totally awesome metal flowers, each using a different technique! Learn super fun ways to create free form shapes in

Copper Pipe Bezels

Using simple sheet metal and copper tubing, learn to make a
variety of bezel pendants. Several soldering techniques, including
flooding, will be used. The open bezel will be further accented
by stamping the back plate with letters and adding patinas. Make
3-5 pendants and fill with vintage images and alphabets. Top off
the bezel with ice resin. To allow time for curing, pick up several
hours later or the next day (mailing can also be arranged). 2

Kit de Couture

This petite book has a hidden drawer which holds a “Kit de Couture,” the French version of a sewing kit. Use traditional bookbinding techniques to bind a 24-page book containing info about
sewing kits, needles, thimbles and thread. The quarter bound
book is covered with marbled paper and features an inset title. You
will receive an antique wooden needle tube, a vintage thimble and
a full set of 31 needles, plus pins, thread, buttons, needle threader
and seam ripper− all to tuck inside the tiny concealed drawer. In
olden days, the Kit de Couture kept the valuable sewing supplies
handy and secure. Your version will be an item for you to cherish,
full of useful info and essential sewing tools. Truly a treasure! 2

Birdhouse Pendant

Create this unique Birdhouse Pendant. You will learn how to
form metal into dome shapes. The metal will be etched utilizing
a simple etching technique. Use a small torch to solder your piece
together, and learn how to apply patinas to your pendant. 2

Off the Cuff Bracelet
Instructor: Strait

Fashion this stunning bracelet, and you will leave class with a
beautiful piece of jewelry and a wealth of metalworking knowledge! Fold forming is a technique of metalworking where metal is
folded, forged and annealed, and unfolded, giving shape to a dramatic, new 3-D form. Anticlastic Raising is a technique of metal
forming whereby sheet metal is formed directly with a hammer on
a sinusodial (snake-like) stake. A flat sheet of metal is shaped by
compressing its edges and stretching the center so that the surface
develops two curves at right angles to each other. Depth and color
will be added to your cuff using heat techniques. 2

The idea of creating a mixed media painting can be a scary
thought. Learn under the guidance of a certified Golden Artist
Educator. You will become proficient at working with a limited
palette to mix your own paint colors. You will also use textured
mediums and collage to create additional interest in your painting. Don’t worry about brushes- this class will use palette knives,
sticks, skewers, stencils, sponges, paper towels, markers, pencils
and even your hands. By the time you are finished, you will not
only have some wonderfully layered abstract paintings, you will
be armed with loads of ideas for other mixed media pieces. 2

Pixie in a Bottle

Capture a pixie in a bottle, surrounded by sparkling jewels, crystals and chains, along with a miniature book to tell her story.
Have you ever wondered what happens to the bits of jewelry
and sparkly things that go missing in your house? Why, they’re
snatched up and used to decorate the glass home of an enchanted
pixie! In this workshop you’ll decorate a clear wine bottle, inside
and out, with dangly bits of jewelry, chains and crystals. Joe will
also show you how to create a miniature book where you can
write the story behind your pixie in a bottle. You’ll select bits of
jewelry from a suitcase full of Joe’s jewelry finds. You’ll also be
able to select your pixie from several different styles and colors. 2

Learn how to take a truly ugly photo and turn it into a
masterpiece! Alter photographs by lifting color, adding scratch
interest and applying touches of vibrant color with crayons and
pens. You’ll scratch and color your way to perfection. You will
also add verbiage, collage pieces and some fun effects. Use these
photos in your journals, as background artwork or for a special
gift added to cards sent to that special someone in your life.
Altering photographs will become your new passion! 2

Acrylic Meets Fiber

In this class Jacqueline Sullivan uses her treasure box of acrylic
techniques as surface design on fabric. Students will learn to use
gesso, molding paste, tissue and more on a fabric ground to build
layers and textures. The texture developed with these tools will
then be highlighted with metallic media. Finished fabrics can
later make great art quilts, table runners and embellishments on

Typography Pocket Fold Album

Join Joe to create a magical mini album with pages all about typography! A great base that can be used to create a vintage or
steampunk look. Each of the six pages in this album have three
pockets for you to insert tags, photos, ephemera and more. Learn
how to fold and assemble 12x12” and 8x8” sheets of paper into
pages that have pockets as the basis of this hard-cover mini album. The binding features the “stack the deck” technique that
can be used over and over again to create your own books. The
finished album measures 6x9” and has a 2” spine. There’s plenty
of room between the pages so you can really fill the pockets without your book bulging. You’ll finish the pages, binding and covers
in class. You’ll get started on embellishments, but you’ll want to
finish that at home to really make your book a work of art. Joe

ARTISCAPE INSTRUCTORS
BETSY BEGUE
In 2002, Betsy Begue left a college teaching position
to live as an ex-pat in France for 5 years. There she
discovered Cartonnage,the French art of creating
objects from cardboard and then covering them with
decorative paper, fabric and trimmings. She studied
in the Atelier of Fanchon Grand, eventually teaching
international students who were as passionate about
Cartonnage as she is. In 2012 she returned to the
Atelier for further classes, renewing friendships and
returning home with many new ideas and supplies for
the workshops she now teaches in Northeastern Ohio.
BARBARA CLOSE
Known for her playful experimentations with paints,
collages, lettering and other mixed media, Barbara has
designed greeting cards for Marcel Schurman Co. and
calendars for Glen Epstein, among others. She created
the logo for Somerset Studio and serves as their lettering consultant, guiding the popular Exemplar section.
From southern California, Barbara has exhibited her
work in juried shows throughout the U.S. and has
taught at many international conferences.
JEN CROSSLEY
From Australia, Jen Crossley’s art is truly unique, incorporating many a found object, vintage ephemera,
resin, etched metal and more. With a true eye for detail,
Jen is able to create assemblage pieces, tiny books and
jewelry from the assortment of pieces she collects. She
has taught at Art & Soul retreats and her work has been
published in a number of Stampington publications as
well as Seth Apters book The Altered Page. Jen’s pieces
conjure up images of times gone by, which inspired
the name of her blog- A Mark in Time.
CYNDI DUNCAN
Cyndi Duncan is the founder and editor of Altered
Arts magazine. Cyndi’s passion for all things creative
has been fueled by the eight years of wonderful and
inspiring projects that have graced the pages of the
magazine. As a former high school teacher, Cyndi has
a passion for relating techniques that she has learned
and discovered, hopefully inspiring you to take them
to even deeper levels.
NANCY FIUMERA
Nancy Fiumera is a book artist, photographer and
graphic designer, as well as a collector of miniature
books. She writes, illustrates and binds her own books
at The Studio at Far Enough, located in Westerville,
Ohio. Fiumera’s limited edition miniature books have
been featured in 1000 Artist Books. She also creates
book sculptures as well as mixed media wire sculptures.
ANNE GIBSON
Designer and owner of Movable Parts, Anne has been
stamping since 1984 when she designed the first set of
art stamps. Her work has been seen in and on the covers
of numerous magazines, and she has taught throughout
the country as both a stamper and professor of theatre
design at Penn State. Her classes often incorporate
paper crafting skills developed through scenic model
building, as well as new techniques, materials and
advances in inks and papers.
KARI MCKNIGHT-HOLBROOK
From Ohio, Kari McKnight Holbrook (aka The Backporch Artessa,) is an award winning artist, instructor
and author. A design team member for Sculpey, Kari
enjoys teaching workshops around the country and
abroad. She’s been featured in Cloth Paper Scissors,
Somerset Studio’s Art Journaling and more. Her own
Cloth Paper Scissors video, Backgrounds to Bindings
was released in 2013.
JENNIFER JENNINGTON
For almost 2 decades, Jennifer has been stamping, creating and altering. Although most of her work teeters
on the altered side, you can always bet that given an
ink, spray or stamp, she will make it work. Jennifer is
the owner – or the one who pays the bills as she would
put it – of Stamplistic in Amherst, Ohio.
CAROL KIMBALL
Carol Kimball is a professional lettering artist who also
enjoys creating surface designs on paper and fabric.
Her artistic pursuits also include jewelry making,
Precious Metal Clay (PMC), the book arts, collage
and fiber arts. She enjoys teaching & loves to share
her knowledge, presenting many calligraphy & paper
arts classes over the years.
CINDY KOVACK
From Phoenix, Arizona, Cindy is a mixed media artist
who has fused her love of collage, paint and recycling
into a way of life. She loves salvaging and recycling
parts and pieces for her art. Cindy is a published artist
who teaches painting, drawing and mixed media techniques throughout the US at colleges and art retreats.
JAN LILL WORMS
From the St. Louis area, Jan has more than 400 hours of
“at the bench” bookbinding training and is a graduate
of Hollander’s in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Jan teaches
throughout the Saint Louis, MO and Springfield, IL
metro areas, as well as Stampaway in Cincinnati. In
2010 Jan became a Certified Zentangle teacher. Jan
loves to bind books and really loves to teach.
GAYE MEDBURY
A native of Louisville, KY, Gaye has been teaching
creative exploration in rubber stamp art and
bookmaking for 15 years. Her artwork has graced the
covers of Rubberstampmadness and Somerset Studio
and has been featured in many stamping magazines.
MAGDALENA MULDOON
Born in Mexico City, Magdalena emigrated to Dallas
in 2002 to bring her mother’s business, Mercart to the
US. Studying traditional Metal Embossing (Repujado
in Spanish or Repousse in French) with some of the
finest teachers in Mexico, Magdalena achieved a wonderful understanding of this ancient art. Her book,
Metal Embossing Workshop received rave reviews. She
collaborated on a video, Art Unscripted with Carol Duvall. She fell in love with Zentangle when she saw the
similarities between that technique and her metal work.
LISA OHMER
Lisa Ohmer is founder of European Papers, a company
that provides materials for collage and bookmaking. She
teaches workshops in the paper arts and bookbinding
in Columbus, Ohio, the Craft and Hobby Association,
StampAway and other venues around the country;
as well as organizes Artiscape each spring. Her work
often involves innovation and the development of new
bindings and art tools. An award-winning designer, Lisa
has served as a creative consultant to more than 100
companies and in marketing management for Kinko’s.
SHARI REPLOGLE
Shari Replogle is a mixed media artist and instructor,
originally from California and now transplanted to
Northern Kentucky. You can see Shari’s work in many
Stampington publications including Belle Armoire
Jewelry, Belle Armoire, Somerset Holidays, Somerset
Studio Gallery, Prims and many others. Shari is known
for her passion in finding fun and interesting ways of
incorporating vintage elements into her designs of art
dolls, assemblage, and one-of-a-kind art to wear pieces.
JOE ROTELLA
Joe’s work has appeared in Scrap & Stamp Arts, Just
Cards, Just Steampunk! and Somerset Studio Gallery
magazines. He’s filmed a segment of Crafting at the
Spotted Canary with Joy Macdonell (aired on PBS)
and 2 segments for Scrapbook Soup TV. He has won
Archiver’s One-of-a-Kind Wall Art contest and has
served on the Viva Las Vegastamps, Want2Scrap and
USArtQuestdesign teams. He launched his own line of
albums and embellishments with Want2Scrap in 2012.
JONI RUSSELL
Joni Russell has owned a rubber stamp and altered arts
store in Wichita, Kansas since 1992. In 2000 Artful
Illusions was started with her own designed rubber
stamps, creative supplies and metal-smithing tools and
materials. Joni has taught altered arts, bookmaking,
metal working, wire wrapping and beading at stores
and art conventions nationally.
MARY BETH SHAW
From Wildwood, Missouri, Mary Beth Shaw loves to
play with art supplies; she jokes that mixed media is
for artists who can’t make up their mind. Her process
utilizes pastel, ink, marker and acrylics layered with
various collage and texture materials; she welcomes
so-called “mistakes” because they lead to wonderful opportunities and discoveries. She is author of Flavor for
Mixed Media and is a columnist for Somerset Studios.
CHERYL STRAIT
Cheryl Strait learned her skills from a myriad of people
and places, working with jewelers from across the country, including The Baum School of Art, Cleveland State
University, Suburban Fine Art Center, Illinois and V
rock shop in Canton, Ohio. She lives in Alliance, Ohio
where she has conducted business as a Metalsmith
and continues to design and fabricate work in her
private studio for more than 15 years. Hork has been
published in several magazines and books including
Artist Trading Cards- an Anthology of ATC’s, Visual
Poetry and Belle Armoire Jewelry.
JACQUELINE SULLIVAN
Michigan’s Jacqueline Sullivan is a mixed media, acrylic
and calligraphic artist. She is well known for her pieces
that experiment with texture, layers, paint, unusual
materials, calligraphic marks and words. For over 30
years Jacqueline has taught workshops for art retreats
and guilds in the US and Canada including several
International Calligraphy Conferences. Jacqueline
has been featured in Somerset Studio, Cloth Paper
Scissors, Pages, Astarte’s Mega-Zine and Alphabet. She
has a best-selling DVD- Acrylics: Textures, Layers, and
Metallics, and recently was named a Golden Certified
Artist for the Golden Paint Company.
LESLEY VENABLE
Lesley is a self taught mixed media, collage, assemblage
artist from Roanoke, Virginia. She has taught at many
venues, including Art Is You, Art & Soul, Artiscape,
Art Unraveled, Lemoncholy’s Studio, Art Bliss, Private
Studios and Paper Cowgirl. Her artwork has been published in the Artitude Zine, Somerset Gallery, Somerset
Weddings and Sew Somerset. She is also a co-author
of Exploring the Latest Trends in Mixed Media Arts.
