BOYS SOFTBALL ROUND 5
th
On Friday 29 July, 2016 the Avoca Beach boys softball team played round 5 of the competition against Wamberal at Bateau Bay
Oval. This was part of a mini gala day which had been organised so Wamberal could play Woongarrah before we arrived to play
the winner.
Avoca were pumped and keen to get out on the field and give it a red hot go. They displayed excellent sportsmanship
throughout the game and were supportive of each other on the field. Avoca played an awesome game against Wamberal and
came out on top with a win 10-2. We are now the overall winners of the Central Coast and will be heading down to Sydney in
November to play the winners of the North Coast and the best of the best from the other regions in the competition.
Congratulations boys, Well Done!

The Powerhouse Museum Excursion
by 2B
Were you wondering where Year 2 was last Tuesday? We were in Sydney at the Powerhouse Museum. Did you know they used
to generate the power for the Sydney trams there? 2B learned a lot and we think it was the best excursion ever.
When Year 2 arrived at the Powerhouse, we were greeted by Geoff, an educator who showed us around the museum. He was a
really active guy and he joked a lot, which made our trip even better. He taught us about the differences in technology between
the past and the present.
Geoff told us about the Hansom Cab, which is an old fashioned taxi, pulled by a horse. We worked out that the “engine” was the
horse which pulled the cab. The pollution was the poo and gas from the horse! The driver sat right at the back and he wouldn’t
open the door to let the passengers out until they paid their fare.
Then Geoff let us go and hunt interesting things in the museum in small groups with a parent or teacher.
We saw a plasma ball and if you put your finger on it the electricity went where your finger was on the cabinet. When you didn’t
have your finger on it all the electricity went everywhere.
At the Power House Museum we saw planes that were built into the roof! They looked like statues even though they were
actual planes. We learned that every plane in Australia has a name starting with VH. We wish we could fly one of those planes.
We created a new kind of plane called “The Flying Ball”.
Many of us crowded into a space simulator. There were a lot of buttons all over the side. It was turning but it didn’t go all the
way around. It looked like we were about to go upside down. It made our tummies go wonky. When it was counting down we
felt like it was going to be bad, but it was awesome! It felt like we were flying.
After we finished exploring, we met up and had lunch and played on the outdoor equipment. It was Nick’s birthday so we sang
him “Happy Birthday” and he gave us a lolly each.
Then it was time for the long bus trip home. We learnt a lot and we hope we’ll go back to the Powerhouse Museum one day.
Congratulations to the following students who received merit certificates at last Friday’s assembly.

NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements
of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by
Australians from all walks of life. Here at Avoca Beach Public School we acknowledge our Aboriginal students and
their families as the original custodians of this land. During Week 3 the school will be proud to combine NAIDOC
Week with Education Week for all our students to take part in.
As part of the school’s NAIDOC week celebrations, students can take part in a unique experience given by the
Aboriginal performer Sean Choolburra. This will be held on Wednesday 3rd August. Sean has carved his niche as
Australia’s No 1 Indigenous entertainer. He is a dynamic and versatile comedian, rap singer, dancer, storyteller,
actor and hip-hop didge player. Hailing from Townsville, Sean has an established career as a dancer and created
the NGARU DANCE COMPANY and performed all over the world with the BANGARRA DANCE COMPANY, including
by invitation for the Dalai Lama, Hale & Pace and Prince Charles. Sean is charming, captivating, cheeky, clever and
charismatic. Perhaps his best ability is to share the naivety of a small town Aboriginal boy still coming to grips with
the big city lights that make him all that much more inviting and engaging as a performer.
A select number of Avoca Beach students entered in this year’s NAIDOC Week national
competition to create a banner incorporating the theme; Songlines - The living narrative of our
nation’s diverse culture. Brilliant work was submitted but unfortunately the students were
unsuccessful at gaining a place.
Let’s celebrate cultural diversity together and recognise and respect our orgins.

THE FAIR – As I am sure you are all aware the Fair is just around the corner and ‘Team Fair’ have been working very hard to
make it the success it has each year. Please offer your help wherever you can, the more people who lend a hand the easier the
task is, please don’t assume others will do it, especially when it comes to helping out your class on their allocated stall and don’t
forget to get the kids involved in decorating their stall in the Rainbow theme! A meal out at Jaws for the class goes to the
winning Stall.
COLA Covered Outdoor Learning Area - As much as our fair is a day that brings our community together, this year we are also
focused on getting closer to reaching our long term goal, to build a COLA, a cover to go over our basketball courts to provide
our students, teachers and community with an area protected from the elements. As you can imagine it’s not cheap and we
have been fundraising over the last few years to make such a large contribution to the school. Check out our display in the
School Reception to keep an eye on how we are getting closer to our goal.
We are already at the half way mark and with funds coming in from our raffle tickets sales, it’s looking great, please keep up the
good work, every little bit helps.
