Sullivan Mackintosh with instructor Ken Sutherland and a “killed” cone.
The teen driver slams on her brakes. Tires squeal, an orange cone gets knocked to oblivion. The driver swerves hard and another
orange cone disappears under the car -- apparently digested -- before the driver comes to a stop. Inside the car there are only smiles
and constructive feedback from an instructor. It wasn’t a highway construction zone; it was the ¿rst pass a young driver was making
at the SCCA-sanctioned Tire Rack Street Survival class held this past Oct. 10 in the South Paddock of PIR.
37 students, primarily teenagers, were divided into two groups, with one group alternately attending a lively classroom presentation
led by Gary Bockman, while the other group is in their vehicles practicing defensive driving skills. Every student has a ride-along
instructor for every exercise. 28 volunteer instructors, staff, and half a dozen parent volunteer “cone chasers,” enjoyed a beautiful sunny day this year … a far cry from last October’s inaugural event when a non-stop downpour made every drill an exercise in
extreme car control.
What skills are taught in a Street Survival class?
• Threshold braking drill: in cars equipped with ABS, it is more properly an introduction into how the pedal feels under full ABS
conditions.

Tire Rack Street Survival at PIR
by Jim Weidenbaum
Shelby Gernhart gets instruction from Kurt Zimmerman
• Slalom exercise: ¿rst with widely spread cones to get students used to turning repeatedly, then with additional codes added to
make for much tighter turns. This drill teaches kids how to make quick changes of direction.
• Turning while braking drill: students learn to turn under maximum braking conditions. Street Survival teaches students to look
where they want to go and experience how ABS allows a driver to steer around an object under full braking.
• Emergency lane change drills: students experience how their car handles during a hard turn.
• Wet skidpad, with turns running clockwise and counter-clockwise. The wet skidpad is a tremendous drill for experiencing understeer (most front and all wheel drive cars) and oversteer (experienced by the Miata’s and BMW’s in the class
• Combined exercise (don’t call it an autocross): puts together a combination of prior exercises, but in a new con¿guration.
Shortly after this class, I received an e-mail from one of the student’s parents. His son was on a rain-soaked highway on-ramp, when
he experienced strong oversteer. He said his son immediately counter-steered into the skid and corrected without much drama. His
son said that a week earlier, he would have jumped on his brakes and surely wrecked.
One kid, one story … makes all the volunteers’ hard work, worthwhile. THANK YOU instructors and staff! Special thanks go to
Gary Chapman and the PCA instructors! As soon at 2010 Solo2 and road racing schedules are set, we’ll announce 2010 schools.

A Quick Review of October Events
Well folks, we’re nearing the end of the
rally season for another year. In fact, as
you read this, we’ll be gearing up for our
rally awards party and putting our cars in
the garage for a well-earned and thorough
going-over.
a heck of an awesome course, with Rally
Moto again participating and a Friday twopass reconnaissance. Friday, of course,
was rainy and cold, and the roads were
muddy, which helped to mitigate any Àat
tires for the recce vehicles.
etting on the nose of his Subaru WRX and
bending the rear sub-frame and assorted
attached pieces, which then caused his car
to look and handle funny. At least 5 people
underestimated the mud plus camber situation and ended up too far off the road.
But ¿rst, a quick review of what you
missed in October: October 4 saw our last
RallyCross of the 2009 season. Competition was ¿erce as people were aiming to
get those last few points over their rivals.
The Washington County Fairgrounds folks
had a surprise in store for us, though: they
went out and bladed, graded, and rolled
the ¿eld Àat!
This year, my co-driver and Mom, Janice
and I were able to write some great notes
for ourselves, and we had a good time doing it too. The funny thing is that rally day
itself dawned bright, sunny and cold, so
all our notations about slippery would be
spot-on for the ¿rst running of the stages
only… after that, the roads would tack
up and we’d have more grip. I was eager to continue practicing my Left-FootBraking techniques that my brother Mark
had taught me in September, and had an
admirable goal of beating my father on the
stages. Well, I got one goal met anyway.
There were no injuries and no delays,
which meant everything ran smoothly.
Hats off to you, Simon, and your organizing committee, for a great event!
On the one had, that was a good surprise—12 years of RallyCrossing will rut
up a ¿eld something ¿erce, and the ¿eld
was in need of some, shall we say, in-depth
work. The downside of all this work was
twofold: ¿rst off, most of the grass was
gone, which meant incredibly dusty conditions. Our trusty crew of volunteers had
put a lot of work into the ¿eld in the days
leading up to the event, especially in putting down many truckloads of water.
The wind out there on that day was howling, and cold, but we did our best with
the water truck. Second sort-of-issue: the
ground itself had some soft spots from all
the work that got re-torn up. Organizers
stayed on top of that issue by constantly
shifting the cones around to minimize rutting, which worked quite well.
As always, we reversed the course for the
afternoon session, which helped throw
dirt back onto where it had been dug up in
the morning. We had over 120 competitors for the day, and over 120 smiles to go
along with that.
October 24 was the date for our last stage
rally of the year, the Mt Hood Rally,
based out of Parkdale, OR. Once again,
RallyMaster Simon Levear put together
Dad and his co-driver John Elkin were
running incredibly well. We traded stage
times with them for 6 of the 7 stages,
within seconds of each other. Mom and I
weren’t able to keep up with the Old Man
on the second running of the Gilhouley Rd
stage, he beat us by 28 seconds. I spent the
rest of the day running at 10/10ths, pushing hard to make up the lost time—and
was only able to come up with a handful
of seconds, which meant he beat me on the
day.
We ran a tidy event with minimal problems
(check youtube for the video by Subaru
Shawn at the Fir Mountain spectator area—I actually did it right!!), and minimal
we’re-gonna-crash moments.
The rest of the ¿eld did not run entirely
unscathed—professional mountain bikers
and Olympians Carl Decker and Adam
Craig, 2nd on the road, rolled their car on
the 17 North stage; subsequent cars saw a
long stretch of glass leading up the road to
their car. Local hot-shoe Mark Tabor attempted to roll his car, and ended up pirou-
Halloween of course was on a Saturday
this year, and even rallyers got to dress up
and have fun with Cascade’s annual boofest, Ghoul’s Gambol. This year’s event
was written by Jeff Zurschmeide, and was
mainly decided based on the answers to
some trivia questions—although the route
was not without challenges as well!
Ten cars entered the event, and travelled
through cemeteries from Stafford’s Robert Bird Cemetery to the Butteville Cemetery by way of the Champoeg Cemetery
and Pleasant Hill Cemetery—all historical
cemeteries which are the ¿nal resting place
of a lot of our local pioneering families.
Up next: the annual combined RallyCross
and road rally season awards with Cascade’s Geargrinders. Details are being
¿nalized, please check the Oregon Rally
Group website for updates. There will be
food, there will be beverages, there will be
a lot of stories and fun!
Also up next, Oregon Rally Group elections! We have openings for RallyCross
chair, Stage Rally chair, Road Rally chair,
and treasurer. Candidates must be Oregon
Rally Group members at the least.
If you’re interested, please contact us for
more information from the Oregon Rally
Group website, www.oregonrally.com.
That’s it for now; Happy Thanksgiving,
everyone!
