Variable-speed gearmotors
Mechanical stepless speed variation for robust performance
SEW-Eurodrive’s VARIGEAR® and VARIMOT® mechanically-adjustable gearmotors can incorporate any type of SEW modular
gear reduction to deliver low output speeds and high torque for a wide range of variable-speed applications. Low-speed
combinations are possible using helical, parallel shaft helical, helical-bevel and helical-worm gearing. Available in foot- or
flange-mount design, our mechanically variable-speed gear units can also be used without additional reduction for direct
machine drive.
Speed adjustment is typically mechanical using a handwheel, or electromechanical using a servomotor. However, utilizing
pole-changing motors it is possible to expand the speed range of SEW-Eurodrive variable-speed gearmotors even further.
VARIGEAR® wide V-belt variable-speed gearmotors
Available in VU and VZ mounting configurations,
VARIGEAR® V-belt variable-speed gearmotors

Electronically controlled drives
Intelligent drive inverters for automated motor control
MOVIDRIVE® universal motor controllers deliver advanced functionality and versatility for precise
control of asynchronous and permanent magnet synchronous motors, in both conventional and highly
dynamic servo applications. In fact, using an encoder, MOVIDRIVE®’s intelligent control can even be
used to enable asynchronous drives to achieve servo characteristics. Modular and expandable, these
powerful drive inverters offer a versatile, cost-effective control solution for a broad range of drive
applications – from simple to the highly complex.
Available with two control modes, VFC (Voltage Flux Control) and CFC (Current Flux Control),
MOVIDRIVE® provides programmable control for both sensorless vector and closed-loop applications.
CFC: MOVIDRIVE®’s CFC mode with
closed-loop feedback provides for
highly dynamic speed control for both
asynchronous AC motors (5000:1
speed range) and AC servomotors
(>3000:1 speed range). Torque rise
times are extremely short.
VFC: With or without encoder feedback,
MOVIDRIVE®’s VFC mode provides high
dynamics and high speed stability for
standard asynchronous applications.
Standard or application version –
the right solution to meet any requirements
MOVIDRIVE® features the intelligent IPOS plus positioning to sequence control system as a standard
®
feature. For all applications, IPOS plus makes no compromises when it comes to precision because
®
it uses the exact and highly-dynamic control properties of the drive inverter. The user can set the
programming to either Windows® programming or high-level language. Thanks to the direct access
to all the internal inverter parameters, IPOS plus is fast and flexible. The result is a diverse movement
®
controller that can be tailored to meet the individual requirements of the system. The variety of
options available in MOVIDRIVE® means that the system can be extended at any time in accordance
with the modular concept.
It is also possible to use the pre-programmed control programs, the application modules.
These application modules or the technology functions "electronic cam disc" and "internal
synchronous operation" enable MOVIDRIVE® to take over the function of a position controller,
flying saw or other application solutions. At the same time, it offers quick parameter settings
rather than time-consuming programming. Simply enter the mechanical data and load the
program in the drive inverter, and it is ready for operation!

Servomotors
Synchronous servomotors
SEW-Eurodrive synchronous servomotors
deliver excellent dynamic performance and
can be very precisely controlled. Their
permanent, rare-earth magnets provide low
mass inertia, enabling these motors to
quickly deliver high torque in response to
speed change commands. A resolver-based
feedback system is standard. However,
increased flexibility can be achieved with an
optionally mounted high-resolution (sin/cos)
absolute encoder.
Highly precise, continuously variable speed
control is available using our MOVIDRIVE® or
drive inverters. SEW DS and CM synchronous
servomotors can be overloaded up to 400%.
An optional fully integrated “fail-safe” disc
brake provides reliable holding and emergency
braking, even with the voltage switched off.

Decentralized drive systems
Decentralized drive control using standard fieldbus communications
A simpler, more compact drive solution that
delivers significant cost benefits
A leader in drive decentralization for the better part of a decade, SEW-Eurodrive has engineered unique decentralized
control technology that takes advantage of the proven reliability of standard fieldbus communications, to replace conventional
centralized switchgear, controls and cabling for dramatic savings in materials and installation costs.
Daisy chaining the power and bus communication, the patent-pending SEW-Eurodrive design enables the controller to be
placed on or near the geared motor, not only providing a substantial reduction in branch circuit cabling, but offering related
benefits that include faster system startup, simpler maintenance and easier future expansion.
Group motor installation architecture
SEW-Eurodrive’s decentralized control architecture takes a modular approach, allowing groups of motors to be wired
as an individual motor normally would be. Fully UL and cUL listed, the SEW system meets US National Electric Code
(NEC) requirements for group motor installation. Local I/O connections are via standard M12 sealed micro-connectors
for convenient, low-cost sensor/actuator integration.
Fieldbus interfaces. SEW-Eurodrive
decentralized control systems are designed
to interface with a variety of standard
fieldbus networks. The bus network allows
for the exchange of important data, including
control, speed, ramp, drive status, fault
indication and output current, as well as I/O
status and control.
Field distributors. The heart of the
decentralized system, SEW’s innovative field
distributor technology integrates the disconnect
switch, VFD, motor brake control and bus
communications into one unit, acting as a
junction box to route power and communications
to the individual drives.
Hybrid cables. Specially designed hybrid
cables combine power transmission, control
voltage and communications within a single
pre-fabricated shielded cable ensuring
optimal EMC shielding. Their fast, easy
connection lets you pre-install, stage and
test the system off-site, reducing the plant
downtime required for installation and setup.
