Title Empticon® – efficient and ergonomic container UNLOADING A new innovation from Univeyor A/S in Denmark is the new Empticon. Arden based, Univeyor has created an innovative machine that has been developed for fast, efficient and ergonomic emptying of freight containers. Innovation - Until now, throughout the world employees have had to manually unload cartons or boxes from 20ft and 40ft sea freight containers, even using telescopic or boom conveyors requires a certain amount of lifting. Now with the arrival of Empticon one man can do it without lifting as much as one carton himself. Heavy lifts - remotely - The Empticon puts an end to those heavy and awkward lifts. One man, who controls all the functions of the machine by means of a lightweight wireless control desk, easily operates it. The operator can work either in the standing or seated position. One-man operation - In many countries, including the EU, the Working Environment Authorities are focusing their attention on the health problems caused by manual working and this includes the unloading of containers. For instance, a typical 40ft container can hold up to 1000 cartons with a total weight of 12.5 ton. If it takes 3 employees 2 hours each to unload the container, then they would have exceeded the amount of lifts recommended for one day. But by using Empticon just one employee could do the same without the manual lifting. 600 cartons per hour - When the container is ready to unload, the operator starts the Empticon and directs the gripper unit towards the first cartons to be unloaded. The gripper is equipped with suctions cups to pull the cartons onto the conveying belt by means of vacuum. The Empticon can handle cartons weighing up to 40 kg, and after a short training programme the operator will be able to unload more than 600 cartons per hour. Five Danish companies with large distributions centres, participated in the development project, each having significant influence on the final capacities of the machine.
