The Cricket Australia
Underage Male
Championships have been
the biggest contributor
to the national teams set
up since its inception. A
vital part of the Australian
Cricket pathway, these competitions may
be the first time players represent their
state at an elite level which will no doubt
lead to opportunities and the emergence of
Australia’s next great talents.
These championships are a proven
breeding ground for Australia’s next crop
and have produced current international
players such as David Warner, Josh
Hazlewood and Australia captain Steve
Smith. With the new addition of the Cricket
Australia XI encompassing the best
under-16 talent, the opportunities are more
plentiful than ever before. I encourage
all players to embody the cricketing spirit
and for all involved to get along and support
Australia’s future stars.

2015
CHAMPIONSHIPS
PREVIEW
The competition will be at its peak in 2015
with the addition of the Cricket Australia
XI comprising of the best talent from the
recent Under 15 Schools Competition.
New South Wales will be looking to go
back-to-back after a faultless carnival
last year, pushing on to try and make it six
championships since 2004-05. The ten
squads will be tested on often batsmanfriendly of Queensland, culminating in a final
on the first-class wicket of Allan Border
Field, overlooked by the National Cricket
Centre and the High Performance Team.
KOOKABURRA
WELCOME
MESSAGE
Welcome to Cricket Australia’s Underage
National Championships for 2015/16.
First of all, welcome and congratulations
to the players who have gone through their
State/Territory selection process which is
an achievement in itself.
These National Championships are about
opportunities not only for the players but
also the coaches and their support staff,
the umpires, the local organising staff,
groundsmen, and many other volunteers.
All of you have achieved a great deal to come
this far and we wish you every success in
the tournament. This is just one opportunity
Australian Cricket has to offer you to take
this experience and build on it.
Enjoy the competition and good luck!
CALLUM
FERGUSON’S
GOLDEN YEARS
The Under 17 National Championships’ most
prolific batsman in the tournament’s 38-year
history was never a big kid, always amongst
the shorter players in the team, but size didn’t
matter according to Callum Ferguson.
“It’s not always the big guys that can hit the
big sixes that dominate; it comes down to
playing good ‘carpet’ cricket,” Ferguson said.
And it was ‘carpet’ cricket that yielded the
classy right-hander 574 runs in 2001-02,
including the still-record individual score
of 258 not out, a knock that saw him lead his
state onto the hallowed turf of the MCG.
“We were sent in to bat by a pretty strong
Queensland side on a wicket that did a little
bit and the mantra was to bat for as long as
possible, I ended up making my highest ever
score.”
It’s a knock that the 30-year-old hasn’t
bettered in over 200 domestic matches,
despite scoring almost 10,000 runs,
showing at a young age Ferguson was
destined for big things.
“I remember playing and missing quite a
few balls in the first hour, the ball was a bit
bouncy so it helped me play my cut shot.
“It got to a point where one of the
Queensland boys came out with his face half
covered in zinc; I think they were trying to
resort to all different tactics.”
Ferguson has scored 300 runs more than
his next competitor, compiling 1078 runs
at an astonishing average of 71.9 between
1999 and 2002.
The South Australia did it against and
alongside players who went on to great
heights at national level, part of a purple
patch of talent in the early millennium.
“I had guys like Mark Cosgrove, Cameron Borgas,
Shaun Tait and Dan Cullen alongside me and I got
to play against rising stars like Cameron White,
Tim Paine, and Nathan Reardon.”
The veteran of 30-ODIs for Australia has
a simple piece of advice for the next crop of
Australia’s batsmen that he adopted while
representing his state.
“I took a bit of responsibility to make big
runs and the mindset that I had to make
runs to win, I was the senior player, and
that’s the mindset that kids need to have
now, that was and should still be the case.”
2014/15 REVIEW
New South Wales Metropolitan’s dominance
over the tournament continued into
2014/15, finishing as the only team to go
undefeated, take 60 wickets and twice
claim outright victories. The squad had a
constant ability to post big targets and
restrict their opponents, leading to the
state’s 17th title.
The biggest ever sixth wicket partnership
was also bettered in the championships just
gone, with South Australian Player of the
Tournament Patrick Page Jnr (170) teaming
up with Nicholas Kartas (63) to compile 204runs in the final round against Queensland.

HISTORY OF THE CRICKET AUSTRALIA
UNDER-17 CHAMPIONSHIPS
A triangular interstate series for U/15
schoolboy cricketers began in 1927 with
Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland
competing. Records are sparse for those
early years, but at least five of those boys
went on to play Test Cricket: KD Mackay, BA
Barnett, MR Harvey, RR Lindwall and MW
Sievers. The competition was suspended
during World War Two, but resumed in
1945-46 with the same states competing.
In 1950-51 Tasmania, South Australia and
Western Australia joined in. These six
states competed annually until 1968-69
after which the series went into abeyance
when the controlling body - the Australian
Schools’ Cricket Council (ASCC), decided
to concentrate their limited resources at
U/19 level.
The ASCC resumed the series in 197778 with Queensland, Tasmania, Western
Australia and Victoria competing. By 197980 all States and Territories were involved.
Cricket Australia took over the running of
the carnival in 1981-82 when it was obvious
that the ASCC was struggling to finance and
organise these events every year.
The age limit was ’15 and under’ until 195455, ‘under 16’ from 1955-56 to 1968-69 and
then again between 1977-78 and 1985-86.
The under-17 age level has been used since
1986-87.
The Parish Cup is named after the late
Robert James Parish CMG, OBE, who was
Chairman of the Australian Cricket Board
between 1966 and 1969 and again between
1975 and 1980. The Parish Cup used is the
original trophy which was awarded for
interstate competitions during the 1930s.
New South Wales have won the Parish
Cup 17 times, Victoria 9, South Australia
5, Queensland 4 and Western Australia
3. Tasmania, Northern Territory and
Australian Capital Territory are yet to win.
The championship has been very successful
in attracting the top players, with 568
participants reaching First Class ranks and
150 of them going on to play at international
level.

UNDER 17 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Cricket Australia Underage National Championships are an integral step in the umpire pathway.
The Championships provide a challenging
environment for umpires, who are tested by
travelling to a new city; standing in matches
with new partners and managing unfamiliar
teams at foreign venues all within a two
week period.
Each state and territory nominates
one preferred candidate to attend the
Championship. For the two additional
positions available, states are invited to
nominate a second umpire, with the Umpire
High Performance Panel (UHPP) making the
final decision on the final two umpires.
Members of the UHPP and the CA
Umpire Educator will then attend the
Championships to observe and provide
assessments for each of the individuals.
On ‘rest’ days, the umpiring group will
attend education and training sessions to
assist their continual development on and
off field.
Current CA National Umpire Panel members who have officiated at Under 17 National
Championships – since 2004/05 season
