26th February 2016 - Spotswood Primary School
‘Where everybody is somebody’
Term 1 Week 5  Friday 26th February 2016
Dear Families,
Learning
This week at Spotswood we met one of our new school mascots, Osamu the
Owl. Osamu represents our value of learning and yesterday our year 5/6 students taught a mini
lesson in each class about this value as they introduced Osamu to the students. You can read all
about it further in the newsletter. Next week we will meet our safety mascot!
Japan Day!!
Don’t forget that Tuesday is Japan Day at Spotswood Primary next week! We hope you can join
us for a special parade on Tuesday morning just after 9:00am. Our Japanese visitors will be
dressing up in traditional Japanese dress and we encourage all of our students to come
dressed with ‘a taste of Japan’. This could be a karate outfit, something made of Japanese
fabric, a white T-Shirt with a red circle representing the flag, Hello Kitty, anything you may have
that is Japanese in flavour.
Bush Dance
Friday 18th March, 6:00pm – 8:30pm
We have had a great response so far to our Bush Dance, we hope lots of families are able to join us for a great
social event. We have included the note again in the newsletter this week with all the information.
Swimming
Today 18 students from Year 3-6 are attending the District
Swimming Carnival at VU Footscray pool. We look forward to
hearing how they go!
Follow along with us!
If you are interested in a glimpse into our Art Room, Mrs Asp has
started an Instagram account and you can follow along at
spotswood.art and see some of the things happening.
We also have a school twitter account now @spottypstweets if

Teddy Bears’ Picnic
My 50 year old teddy came along to the Preps and Buddies Teddy Bears’ Picnic this week. After playing a few
games of ‘Bear Hug Tiggy’ and reading a story together, we all shared our lunch together with our bears. The
5/6 students brought their teddies along too and I must say, I think they were even more excited than the preps!
Our preps will
be here full time
next week !
School Council
Thank you to parents and staff for their interest in School Council, we have filled all of our positions
and I would like to welcome back some returning School Councillors as well as some new faces for

Lessons by 5/6R
“Hi! I’m
Osamu Owl.”
This week all the 5/6 students taught the Prep-4’s about Osamu the Owl. Osamu the Owl is the new school
mascot for the school value of learning. Osamu means discipline and study in Japanese. Three 5/6’s went to
each class and did different activities with each class. In grade 3/4 we asked the students what the word
learning means to them. We used the website Tagxedo to make a handprint with all of their ideas. We found
teaching the grade 3/4’s a bit challenging but pretty fun at the same time.
