NAIDOC ASSEMBLY
10 August 2012
Issue No.12
Proud Aboriginal Community Members
The theme for 2012 NAIDOC Week is remembering Tent Embassy and this was achieved successfully at the Woopi
High NAIDOC Assembly held last Wednesday (1st August). A
whole school assembly with students and staff, with many
community members in attendance observed speakers,
Student Award recipients
presentations and awards throughout this powerful and movBack: Tyler, Chloe, Molly & Maddy
ing experience. A morning tea was held afterwards, with several important community members receiving accolades and Front: Jarrod, Jesse and Jessicha
thanks for their positive contribution to the Woolgoolga High
school community. The Garrgul Goyas cooked a glorious feast of kangaroo, damper and bush jams, much
to the pleasure of participating attendees. Specific thanks also go to Sue Tomkins and Robbie Robertson
from Bush Tucker Shack and Tracy Pitman for the beautiful array of food on offer, Clark Webb (AIME program) for his thought-provoking speech and local aboriginal elders (from Corindi)
Debbie Dootson and Barry Hoskins for sharing the day with us. A massive
thankyou to Kelly and Jo Hine for all of their
organisation and ensuring that the day was
a great success for all involved. Congratulations to Madalene Duroux and Trinity Sherry for the professional and mature approach
they showed in conducting the assembly.
You and the other students who received
awards on the day are a credit and valuable
asset to our school. Awards were received
for outstanding attendance, sporting and
Trinity Sherry at
Debbie & Barry
academic achievement.

From the Principal’s Desk
I would like to begin this newsletter
with a big thank you to the whole
school community for the very
successful NAIDOC assembly and
celebrations. A full report is
contained in this newsletter. Thanks
in particular to Jo Hine, Kelly Hine,
Genette Maniatis , Aboriginal Elders
and the Aboriginal Community and
to Clarke Webb from AIME who
delivered an inspiring speech.
Thanks to Year 10 parents and
students for completing the subject
selection process for Year 11 in
2013. Choosing the right path
through the senior school and then
onto tertiary education is very
important
for
every
student.
Students that set clear goals for
their futures are quite often the more
successful students. I encourage all
parents to continually have ongoing
discussions
about
the
future
directions that their children want to
pursue. These goals may change
significantly over time, but to have
goals is very important.
The super
heroes soccer
match between
the staff and
Year 12 students
was a great team
building activity.
The Trial HSC examinations have
been a stressful time for our senior
students but staff have commented
that there has been a very positive
commitment by them in this
examination period. Good luck with
your results. Remember…. nothing
replaces
hard
work
and
commitment.
A fun event was held during the
week. The super heroes soccer
match between the staff and Year
12 students was a great team
building
activity.
Fullback
Mr
Henderson stood out a star of the
future and Mr McGrane fielded a
few high balls to the head and body.
Thank you to all parents and students
that are supporting our school in
ensuring children are in full school
uniform. Although it is winter, it is still
essential that all students come to
school in full school uniform. It is
imperative for the safety and security
for all students at our school. Staff
need to be able to identify intruders
into the school immediately. With the
proliferation of multi-coloured jumpers
it is making this essential task
impossible. It is also extremely
important for all of our students to look
great when they leave the school and
represent the school in the many
extracurricular activities in which our
students are involved. Our students do
look fantastic as a group when all
students are in full school uniform.
WHS demands that all students wear
leather enclosed footwear for safety
reasons in practical subjects. I do not
want to have any students denied the
opportunity to developing practical
skills in these subjects.
The Home Economics Department
wishes to pass on a thank you to the
Egar family who kindly donated 240
Philly Cooking Gift Sets and 400
quality full colour Philadelphia Cream
cooking books.

There has been a report of a highly infectious disease called Scabies (“The Itch”)
in our school community.
The usual time between infection and
illness is several days, sometimes even
weeks.
Symptoms and signs include sever itchiness continuing for days or even weeks
and becoming worse at night. The itching is caused by a tiny mite which burrows under the skin. Warm parts of the
body such as wrists, armpits, elbows,
back of shoulders, buttocks, groin and
around the genitals are most affected.
Scratch marks and sometimes tracks
showing the line of the „burrow‟ are seen
on the skin. Secondary infection may
cause pus-filled sores, very like impetigo
(“scabby sores”), where the affected areas have been scratched.
Please keep your child at home if they
show signs of these symptoms.

Friday 3 August was our annual fundraiser for medical research and children's‟ cancer—‟Jeans 4 Genes‟ Day. Students wore denim bottoms with school tops in return for a
donation—preferably a gold coin. This is part of an Australia-wide campaign and all together millions can be
raised. For our school, a great attitude to helping others
has lead to various charity fundraising purposes. A total of
$326.15 was raised on the day from students and staff at

Attendance
Attendance, Attendance...
What are HSLOs and ASLOs and why are they at your school????
Mick Gibbs: ASLO, Craig Speirs and Jo Reid: HSLOs are now based at Orara High School and service the
greater Coffs Harbour area. They are Home School Liaison Officers and their job is to help schools and families
ensure all kids attend school regularly.
Missing too much school leads to a number of problems in your life now and will impact your options in the
future.
The NSW Department of Education takes attendance at school very seriously.
Did you know?
The Department of Education check on every child’s attendance.
If you miss too many days, without explaining why, you will be
interviewed by the school and the ASLOs/HSLOs.
If you don’t attend school enough, truant regularly or refuse to come,
you or your parents could end up in court!
You could be fined.
You could be placed on a court order to attend school.
Important things to remember




Always make sure you bring a note or contact school to explain why you
were away.
If you know you are going to be away, contact the school and let them know.
If something is happening at school that makes you want to stay home ...
Tell someone. Your year adviser, deputy principal, school counsellor,
HSLO, AEO or teachers will help fix the problem.
It isn’t ever cool to be a school truant. You are only hurting yourself and
your family and maybe damaging your future.
TURN IT AROUND !
Improve your attendance and you will be rewarded.
For those kids who have good attendance we say
CONGRATULATIONS!!
Keep coming and go for ZERO days away!!

The school library was busy during Education Week with multiple classes being
booked in each period, book displays and the Olympics being screened.
Many students took the opportunity to borrow books and receive their free laminated
Olympic bookmark.
Students who have borrowed in excess of five books for the Premier's Reading
Challenge (PRC) throughout the year have also received Blue Tickets over the last
couple of weeks. The deadline for going online or seeing Mrs Hart about PRC books
and validation is 31st August.

Some would call it a close match,
others an obliteration. All in attendance would say that they laughed
and enjoyed participating in (and
observing) the SuperHeroes Soccer
match between Year 12 and staff
last Friday.
In true teacher fashion, staff looked
after the self-esteem of the Year 12
students by limiting the scoring to just a „convincing win‟.
A fast-paced match occurred with the occasional bump or
bruise occurring. After the annihilation (by staff) that was the Cross Dresser Netball match this
leaves the score at 2-0 to the teachers. We await the next challenge!!
There are a number of white
shirts that are available for
sale.
Cost is $32 each or 2 for $55
Some sizes are limited, but
you‟ll still look good in these
shirts, especially for Year 11

RSL ANZAC Art Competition
Open to all NSW school students from Years 1-12, the long-running art award acknowledges the values of
ANZAC, such as respect and remembrance in a visual context.
RSL NSW developed the ANZAC Art Project for all schools in NSW in the 1970s to encourage all school
students to research, learn and appreciate the historical and cultural significance of Australia‟s traditional
links to ANZAC Day.
The ANZAC Art Award offers a colouring competition to primary students and a painting competition to secondary students.
Each of the six categories has an award certificate of Bronze, Silver and Gold for winning contestants along
with cash prizes in each category. There is also The RSL Lifecare Award chosen from schools who submit
at least five entries.
A special award and medal will also commemorate the outstanding service and commitment of the late
President of the Teachers Sub-Branch of the Returned and Services League, Geoffrey William Falkenmire
OAM.
The NSW Premiers Kokoda Prize will be awarded to an 18 year old student who will get to experience a
true ANZAC tradition walking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.
The RSL ANZAC Art Awards are open to all Year 1-12 school students in NSW. Entry forms and all details
are at: www.rslanzacartawards.com. The competition closes on 2 November 2012 with the winners being
announced before the end of term.
This year the competition had 37303 participants from 541 high schools Australia-wide. Woolgoolga High School had 9 students compete, receiving two Distinctions in Jake Vandermeel and Jackson Carter; two Credits from Jivan Drungilas and Patrick Mullan; five participation certificates by Pippa Bond, Chelsea Adams, Nicolaas Van Rensburg, Briton Hutchinson and Masyn
Egar. Congratulations to all participants and we'll see you next year with all of your friends.

Last Wednesday Lochlan Gould of Year 12 was
awarded with the Regional Director‟s Award for
Excellence in Student Achievement at the North
Coast Region Education Week Awards held at
Orara High School. This award recognises Lochie‟s commitment to the S.M.I.L.E. program at the
school, which is a student-lead peer mentoring
program dedicated to assisting students to overcome difficulties they are having with their lives,
including bullying. Pictured (L-R) with Lochie is Mr Ian Cook, Head Teacher Welfare who assists
with the administration and training for the program and Mr Guy Wright, Principal of Woolgoolga
High School.
Although Lochie is fully committed to his academic studies at the moment, the S.M.I.L.E.team of
mentors in Years 11 & 12 will continue the program well into the future.

On 25th July, a strong team of talented athletes from Woolgoolga
High School travelled to Kingscliff's Walter Peate Oval to challenge
for honours at the Regional NCCHS Athletics Championship. With
the school being successful in gaining 3rd place overall on 144 points
(only surpassed by Nambucca and Kingscliff High) we were
extremely proud of the effort and achievement of those students who
represented the school. In particular, congratulations to our two

Throughout the last term and the beginning of
Term 3, the drama classes have been working
hard. Year 9 have been writing, costuming, making and rehearsing for their Assessment tasks of
Duologue. During Education Week they refined their work
and as a result have finally finished this unit on Movement
and Dialogue.
Year 10 are also busy. Their Commedia dell‟Arte masks are
being made for a comedy routine that shows the origin of
slapstick. The extra fun will be in making and designing their
costumes, then performing for an audience. Each of the students will adapt their routine according to their masks and
their status in life. Wait for the next instalment when we
bring you the finished product!
WHS STUDENT GAINS PLACE AT NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE
Congratulations to James Morgan of Year 11 for being accepted
into the 2013 National Youth Science Forum. Out of the thousands of Nation-wide applicants, James was one of the 460 applicants that were successful.
Woolgoolga Rotary is sponsoring James with $2000 and he will
be fundraising the remaining amount over the coming months!

A big thank you to Mrs Rook and Mrs David on behalf of the
students, staff and community members that went on the
Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb excursion late last term.
Having the opportunity to visit such an exquisite
international exhibition was eye-opening for many
attendees. Some students were amazed at the facilities of
the Queensland Museum at South Bank, as this was their
first visit to the museum itself. Many students were taken
aback at seeing such items as the artefacts, sarcophagus,
replica Rosetta Stone and many other aspects of the
mummy exhibition. Many others were intrigued by the
visual forensic display of the mummy Nesperennub and the
virtual autopsy. Again, thank you to our lovely History ladies
for their organisation.
