About the Area
"Lake George is without comparison, the most beautiful water I ever saw; formed by a contour of mountains into a
basin... finely interspersed with islands, its water limpid as crystal, and the mountain sides covered with rich
groves... down to the water-edge: here and there precipices of rock to checker the scene and save it from monotony."
~Thomas Jefferson, May 31, 1791
Known as “The Queen of American Lakes,” Lake George is one of the most beautiful bodies of
water in the world. Thirty-two miles long and approximately two miles wide, the lake is fed by
mammoth underground springs and includes 109 miles of shoreline, about 300 islands, and covers
an area of 44 square miles.
Situated 320 feet above sea level, the lake varies in depth from 1 foot to 195 feet. Amazingly, the
mouth of the lake is located at Lake George Village, on the southern end, and it empties through
Ticonderoga Creek into Lake Champlain (which is 210 feet lower) to the north! This creates a
natural wonder, since the water plunges from one lake to the other and has a drop which surpasses
that of Niagara Falls. Much of the shoreline is unsettled, and through federal and state conservation
efforts, will remain so. Small communities surround the lake, each lending its own unique style and
way of life.
Airports and Car Rentals
Albany International Airport (ALB) is located 50 miles south of Lake George and provides most
major airlines service including American, United, Continental, Delta, Northwest and Southwest.
Warren County Airport (Floyd Bennett Airport-GFL) is located in Queensbury (10 miles southeast
of Lake George) and will accommodate private planes and charters.
The Albany airport has car rentals available from Avis, Hertz, Budget, National and Payless. If
flying into the Warren County airport, rental cars must be pre-arranged with the local offices of
either Hertz or Enterprise.
Weather & Packing
Lake George has a temperate climate, with warm summers and cool winters. At any time of
year, the temperature can drop low enough to make a jacket advisable. Afternoon
thunderstorms are common in the summer. The table below outlines the average temperature
fluctuations at lake level. Pack layers and area attire is “Mountain Casual”.

Cycling
Lake George is great “Bike Country”! One of the favorite spots to bike is the rolling, paved
Warren County Bikeway which runs nine wooded miles from Lake George to Glens Falls. Ride
from the southern tip of Lake George along a wooded bike path, or stop and check out the
Colonel Williams Monument (a great place for a picnic). If you enjoy historical sites, be sure to
stop at Bloody Pond (whose name comes from a battle that occurred there during the French
and Indian War). It is especially beautiful in the springtime when the entire pond is surrounded
by lilies! Later on in the ride you will be rewarded with beautiful views of Round Pond which
happens to be a popular spot for fishing as well. For an easy, flat ride check out the trail along
the Feeder Canal Train. For mountain bikers, there is no greater challenge than the dirt trails of
the Adirondack Mountains or the ride down after a gondola ride up Gore Mountain. We can
also create custom trail maps for you, so let us know the type of trip you prefer, and we’ll have
the map waiting! Bikes can be rented from the Beach Road Outdoor Supply, phone 518-6684040.
Downhill Skiing

Just 30-35 minutes from the house, Gore Mountain is the premier Adirondack ski venue and

Northwoods Gondola is the only gondola in New York state (amazing, especially during
those colder days). Gore also has a terrific tubing facility, and showshoeing/cross-country

Fishing
Lake George is a year-round fisherman’s paradise! With miles of undeveloped shoreline on the
northeast side of the lake, big pike and bass are abundant. Largemouth and smallmouth bass,
lake trout and Atlantic landlocked salmon are among the premier fishing trophies of this familyoriented vacation mecca. Try trolling for salmon and trout during the spring and fall. Take a shot
at fly-fishing in the summer, in the shallow water along the shoreline. Want to experience life as
an Eskimo? Ice fishing is enormously popular in the winter, and a complete “freeze up” usually
occurs by the beginning of January when northern pike and landlocked salmon are the favored
prize. Mid-February brings Lake George’s famous hack perch. Regardless of when you visit,
fishing is an activity not to be missed! A valid NYS fishing license is required for everyone over
the age of 16 years.
Golfing
Visitors to Lake George are amazed by the number of golf courses in the area. In fact there are
more golf holes per capita in this Adirondack area than anywhere in the entire Northeast. Within
a 15 mile radius of Lake George there are over 15 public golf courses, including the fabulous
public course next door, The Sagamore Golf Course.

Whitewater Rafting
A long time ago, Lumbermen would take advantage of the high waters and drive logs to the
market. The log flows, some stretching over 20 miles, would roar down the river on a high
spring current. Today there are no more logs, but there is the challenge and adventure of
whitewater rafting, with 12 man rafts, canoes, and even kayaks.
Snow melt combines with spring rains and swells the brooks, streams, and nearby Hudson River
creating a whitewater adventure to rival any in the country. The trip on the Hudson is an all-day
guided adventure covering 16 miles and includes rapids from class II to class V.
Spring whitewater season is generally April 1st through June 30th with the highest water levels in
early to mid-April. If you miss April, great whitewater is a sure thing on any given day owing to
dependable dam releases from the Abanakee Dam on the Indian River.
Summer whitewater rafting is a new addition on the Hudson. Water levels are generally lower,
but warm weather and warmer water for swimming make this a great summer cooler. Autumn
rafting is without a doubt the most spectacular time to see the river – blazing colors and
whitewater combine for an exciting time on the Hudson.
Even a beginning rafter can enjoy this experience through rafting outfitters. These outfitters
offer the safest, most challenging, and enjoyable whitewater rafting trips imaginable.
Adventurous people in good health will have no problems however; the outfitters feel swimming
ability is a must!
