February 2016 SPARTAN HERALD http://rea.frederick.k12.va.us Dear Parents, Can you believe we are more than half-way through the school year? Our 8th graders will soon make their course choices for their upcoming freshman year and our 6th and 7th graders will soon be selecting their courses for next year. The Aylor Staff hopes that this school year to date has been a rewarding and enriching experience for you and your child. This is a good time to check your child’s progress and set goals with your child for the second semester. If concerns exist, please contact the guidance department to schedule a conference with your child’s teachers. The third nine-weeks is typically a time when teachers see declining grades due to incomplete homework, poor class work, or low test grades. As you know the winter weather can cause issues and disrupt our school schedule. We have survived the BLIZZARD of 2016, but February SNOW is historically an issue as well. Please assist your child by checking their assignment book and the Teacher Edline or Google Classroom web site for current grades, homework, test, and project dates and to see if your child is keeping up with his/her school work. You can also make contact with any teacher through Ed-line by using email. Many of our teachers send out weekly email updates. If your child is struggling and needs extra help in any subject, the M.A.T. program is a great place to receive tutoring for your child in reading, math, social studies, and science every Tuesday from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Teachers are available during the program times to assist students with their homework or to provide additional instruction in the four core subjects. We also have students from Sherando High School who are available to tutor students. Contact the guidance office to get a permission slip and more information about the M.A.T. Program. In addition, each and every student can also utilize the REAP program on a daily basis to get tutoring and assistance from their teachers. Please encourage your child to use this time by requesting a REAP Pass. Guidance counselors will be meeting with the 6th & 7th grade student body to begin scheduling classes for next year. The Program of Studies information is located on the FCPS Web site in an electronic version. Parents please review these materials with your child and work with them to make their class choices for next year. Aylor students continue to be busy and successful in their various activities. Volleyball season will soon be underway and practice for the spring musical, Wizard of Oz Jr. is in full swing, as well as a variety of after school groups and club activities. Please encourage your child to get involved in school activities as the opportunities arise. The following clubs are in need of additional membership: FBLA, FCCLA, FFA, TSA, Chess Club, and Accents Magazine. Students who are involved in extracurricular activities tend to do better in school. Please see the enclosed calendar for the specific events that will be occurring during the month of February. The Aylor Track Season is just around the corner as well. Announcements for all of these events scroll in the café daily on our large screen projectors. Early preparations for the 8th grade end of year dance and the 8th grade academic awards ceremony are also underway. Dresses for the dance do not have to be a formal gown. As a matter of fact, a nice dress suitable to wear on other special occasions is very appropriate. We will be meeting with students to review the guidelines and sending home a form with the specific guidelines as to what is appropriate to wear for the dance. The first meeting of the 8th grade parent dance committee will be held in March this year, with the dance being held in late May. The success of the dance is dependent upon parent volunteers, so please come out and help us plan a great event for our 8th grade students. Our PTSO continues to do some amazing things here at Aylor, but they are in need of some additional volunteers and support. Please contact us to get involved with our PTSO. Only a few hours of volunteer work is needed for various events and activities. As we move into the second half of the year, stay in touch with your child’s teachers in order to keep the path to success a clear and easier one. Our guidance department is available to assist with many of the middle school issues that your child may be struggling with. In addition, our school resource officer, Deputy Sampson is available for support with many of the issues that may be affecting your child and family. We look forward to working with you and helping to make your Aylor experience the best possible! Sincerely, David L. Aylor welcomes our new 8th grade English Teacher Ms. Heare Hello! My name is Ms. Heare, and I am the new eighth grade English teacher. I’m very excited to be here at Aylor, and I would love to share a little about my journey as to how I got here! I started my teaching experience at West Virginia University. I graduated from WVU in 2012, and I quickly earned a teaching position as a sixth grade English teacher in Martinsburg, WV. I worked there for three and a half years, until I was able to further my teaching career at Robert E. Aylor Middle School. So far my experience at REAMS has been wonderful; the students have been wonderful, and they seem to have adjusted quite well to the transition. This semester we will be completing lots of writing assignments to help improve the students’ writing skills, and I hope to do this by creating a fun and exciting learning environment for each of the students. If you have any questions or concerns, lease feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I look forward to the remainder of the school year! Ms. Heare Attention parents! Do you have an interesting job that you'd like to share with our students? We are looking for engaging and interactive presenters for the Aylor Career Fair on Tuesday, May 31st. If you are interested in participating, please contact Kim Black, agriscience teacher ([email protected]) or Courtney McCalley, 7th grade counselor ([email protected]). We hope to represent each of the 16 career clusters listed below: Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources Architecture & Construction Arts, A/V Technology & Communications Business Management & Administration Education & Training Finance Government & Public Administration Health Science Hospitality & Tourism Human Services Information Technology Law, Public Safety, Corrections & Security Manufacturing Marketing Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics Transportation, Distribution & Logistics SPELLING BEE The Frederick County Spelling Bee will take place on Thursday, 2/11/16 at James Wood Middle School at 7:00 pm. LIBRARY NEWS FAMILY FORENSIC SCIENCE NIGHT Wednesday, 2/10 From 6-8 Learn how to analyze hair samples, identify dental marks, fingerprints and more! Can you solve the crime???? Well, hopefully you all survived “snowmageddon”, and enjoyed a little break. I know the kids loved it! Please remind your students to return their library books, or renew the book if they are not finished reading. There are a lot of over due books and bills will be sent out by the second week of February. The library received a grant from the FCEF for a new Makerspace and charging station in November. The Makerspace is complete, and the charging station is just waiting for some holes to be drilled (to hide the wires). The library looks great! We are now beginning inventory of all items in the library catalog. This is a long process because this not only includes books, but all of the equipment too. However that shouldn’t stop you from finding the perfect book! There are plenty of great books to entertain and if you need help finding a “good” book just ask one of us, a teacher, or even one of your classmates for suggestions. LOVE A SOLDIER DANCE Margaret Werner The 3rd annual Love A Soldier Dance is scheduled for Friday, 2/12. Tickets will be sold outside the cafeteria be‐ ginning Monday, 2/8 (before school) for $3. Proceeds from the ticket sales and court voting will be do‐ nated to Honor Flight Northeast Tennessee to help bring veterans to D.C. to visit the War Memorials con‐ structed in their honor. More infor‐ mation about Honor Flight can be found at www.honorflight.org Valley Health is partnering with local school systems, health departments, and other agencies to complete a Community Health Needs Assessment. A community health survey will help identify key health needs, gaps regarding the availability of services, and the impact of behaviors on health outcomes. Valley health and its partners will use the survey results to develop strategies to address the identified needs. Please take a moment to complete the brief online survey at Valley Health’s website at http://www.valleyhealthlink.com/survey. The survey should take less than five minutes to complete. Don’t miss this opportunity to have your voice heard. She is very proud of all of you! SAFE SUPPORTIVE SCHOOLS The primary goal of all school staff is to create a safe, nurturing environment in which students are able to learn. If students do not feel safe at school, then learning becomes extremely difficult, if not impossible. To address the safety needs of students, staff, parents, and community members, the Frederick County Public School (FCPS) has created Threat Assessment Teams in each school. Threat assessment teams are comprised of school administrators, school counselors, school psychologists, school resource officers, and other key school staff members. Team members work with students, school staff, and parents to identify potential threats in the school, and then they create plans to address those threats. To learn more about the FCPS Threat Assessment Teams, visit our website: FCPS 224P https://goo.gl/CFOgXo FCPS 224R https://goo.gl/jla8MG School safety is the responsibility of everyone. If you or your child becomes concerned about a person who may pose a threat to the safety of the school community, please contact the principal, assistant principal, or school resource officer (SRO). Together, we will continue to create a safe, supportive environment for our children. As of March 1st we will be using Peachjar Electronic Collection for the distribution of non school materials, school fundraiser information, Aylor Athletics, school dances, flyers etc. There will be an icon added to Aylor’s home page for viewing of all information.
