2012-2013 Course Guide
From the Dean
Continuing Dental Education continues a tradition of excellence
T
he mission of the Office of Continuing Dental Education is to
become the dental profession’s trusted resource for continuing
education and life-long learning. We created our mission in
part by focusing on the feedback we receive from our participants,
many of whom travel from around the United States to attend our
courses. In a recent participant’s words, we are “simply the best.”
Each year as we build our course line we work to ensure you will
receive the kind of quality education you’ve come to expect from the
University of Florida College of Dentistry. We want to thank those
who gave us feedback and recommendations that helped develop our
Dolan
course selections. We received valuable input from past CDE participants, college alumni and faculty, and our UF CDE advisory board.
We took your advice and it’s reflected in this new course guide.
Certain courses deserve special recognition because they illustrate our tradition of leadership and innovation in CDE programming.
Our new Executive Practice Management Course for Dentists (see
page 6) is the first of it’s kind in the U.S. and bridges the knowledge
gap from clinical dentist to business owner. This program meets
one weekend a month for 13 consecutive months and is modeled
after the extremely successful Comprehensive Dentistry Program for
Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry. The course will be
taught by Dr. Annelise Driscoll, who has over 25 years experience
Haddix
in practice administration. We believe this business course, focusing
strictly on the business practices of dentistry, will quickly become
one of our flagship programs.
Changing laws and emerging technologies have enormous impact on our CDE programming. The new Florida statute permitting dental hygienists to administer local anesthesia
created a need for a course to fulfill the training requirements listed in the statute (see page
12). Cone Beam CT is rapidly becoming an integral part of the modern dental practice so
two new courses focus on training dentists to implement Cone Beam CT. We are offering a
one-day lecture course in Orlando (see page 25) and a two-and-a-half-day clerkship for those
who desire more in-depth training in our clinical setting (see page 24).
Finally, we added a Digital Implant Dentistry course (see page 18) to complement our
existing line-up of implant courses that include an Implant Continuum (see page 16), a
patient-treatment course at our Hialeah Dental Center (see page 16) and a patient-treatment
course at our St. Petersburg Dental Center (see page 17).
Thanks to all of you who are already part of our CDE programs. We sincerely appreciate your support and trust. And for those of you who are new to the UF Continuing Dental
Education programs, we welcome you to our Gator dentistry learning community and our
tradition of excellence in dental education.

building or becoming an associate, to debt reduction through overhead control, and wealth accumulation for practice transitions; the program encompasses a business school curriculum customized to
executive dental practice ownership.
Topics are divided into 13 modules with modules
taught over one weekend per month. Instructional
methods include lecture, hands-on workshops,
guest lectures, and online supplemental learning between meeting dates. Dentists are actively

forecasting, dental leadership, communications,
legal compliance and wealth accumulation serve
as primary course content.

endodontics
Rotary Endo: Your Pathway to Faster & More Predictable Results
Course Description:
Effective endodontic treatment removes pulpal remnants,
bacteria and debris from the canal system mechanically
and chemically (through irrigation). Instrumentation to the
correct length and apical preparation to the correct size is
critical for obtaining the best possible canal cleanliness.
Excessive dentin removal — especially in the coronal
third where masticatory stresses are greatest — must be
avoided. To ensure long-term success, effective obturation
and restoration is essential to prevent recontamination.
Control the microbes and you control the case! The
EndoVac irrigation system (apical negative pressure irrigation) presents an important advancement in endodontic
irrigation technology. Past studies have shown that current irrigation techniques are effective at cleaning root
canals coronally, but significantly less effective apically.
Endodontic irrigants such as sodium hypochlorite should
ideally be delivered to working length to fully disinfect the
apical part of the canal as well as dissolve residual tissue.
Apical negative pressure allows safe irrigation of the apical
canal by reducing the risk of pushing sodium hypochlorite
out of the foramen. The EndoVac system is unique in that
it delivers irrigant to the pulp chamber while simultaneously vacuuming irrigant to full working length, helping
to avoid a sodium hypochlorite accident. It’s cleaning,
disinfecting and smear layer removal abilities are important
functions that lead to maximum microbial control and significantly less post-operative pain for your patients.

Concepts of Occlusion…As They Relate to Everyday Dentistry
Course Description:
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
With the increasing application of all-ceramic and implantsupported restorations, occlusion has, once again, taken
on an added level of importance. Unfortunately, there
seems to be more and more confusion and controversy
regarding this subject. We will address the major topics of
occlusion as they relate to everyday dentistry. This information should help develop treatment plans that not only
keep your patients comfortable, but also improve survivability of your restorations.
•Gain full understanding of the healthy temporomandibular joint and how to plan treatment when joint
pathology exists
•Better understand centric relation
•Learn the five major theories of occlusion to determine
which one may be better for your restorative patients
•Canine guidance or group function ... which one is correct?
•Review etiologies of major forms of tooth breakdown and
wear
•Learn to predictably alter vertical dimension of occlusion
•Re-familiarize yourself with the examination process and
fully understand what each piece of information represents
in planning rehabilitative dentistry
•Gain accurate diagnostic records along with simple, reliable, and repeatable methods of recording centric relation
•Quickly produce diagnostic wax-ups that fulfill the
requirements of a stable occlusion
•Find out if your appliance therapy decision matches the
problem
•Learn what provisional material works best in different
clinical situations
•Learn to fabricate provisionals exactly duplicating your wax-up
•Tips on full-arch impressions
•How to check your technician for accuracy, then seat and
adjust the final case
The morning session will review joint anatomy and pathology and its effect on restorative dentistry. Next, we will cover
pros and cons of the major theories of occlusion and discuss
the etiologies of wear. We will also discuss differing condylar
positions relative to contacting teeth. Finally, we will discuss
vertical dimension, anterior tooth position and guidance.
The afternoon will focus on the examination process, developing a tentative treatment plan on diagnostic models,
then transferring this information into precise provisional
restorations. Case finalization will be discussed covering
topics such as full-arch impressions and how to communicate all aspects of the corrected provisionals to your technician, so that final restorations will be an exact duplicate of
the correct and accepted provisional restorations.

Minimally Traumatic Exodontia and Alveolar Ridge Preservation:
A Cadaver Course
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Atrophy of alveolar ridges following tooth extraction is a common fact and can severely compromise the esthetic and functional rehabilitation of patients. Preservation of the alveolar
ridge has become the standard of care and a necessity for the
successful contemporary clinician. Minimally traumatic teeth
extraction, biomaterials selection, and appropriate surgical
technique application are key factors for successful treatment
outcome. Numerous options of biomaterials and surgical
techniques can be overwhelming for the clinician and can
lead to improper clinical management.
At the end of the course the participant will be able to:
•Understand and practice contemporary techniques and
instrumentation for minimally traumatic exodontia
•Understand the benefits and rationale for ridge
preservation
•Understand how the biologic events during healing of the
extraction socket relate to ridge preservation concepts
•Understand the role of different biomaterials on ridge
preservation techniques
•Understand the differences between ridge preservation
and ridge augmentation procedures
•Understand and apply basic surgical concepts related to
ridge preservation procedures
•Understand and apply treatment concepts for
compromised and non-compromised extraction sockets
This course is designed to teach the general dentist how to
effectively and predictably maintain the dimensions of the
alveolar ridge following tooth extractions. A unique feature
of this course is the use of fresh frozen cadaver heads for
practicing minimally traumatic exodontia with the most current instrumentation and surgical techniques for hard and
soft tissue preservation following extractions. At the end of
the course the participants should have the ability to correctly
plan and effectively utilize various surgical extraction ridge
preservation techniques.
Session 1: Lecture
Didactic knowledge needed for management of extraction
sockets.
Session 2: Participation
This session is a hands-on session on cadaver heads.

Attachment and implant dentistry provide a functional
and esthetic means to achieve treatment planning success as well as overwhelming patient satisfaction. This
course explores the rationale for using attachments as
connectors to implants. It clarifies the role of study models, wax bites, occlusal set ups and surgical stents in the
success of treatment. Options from two to ten implants
are presented. Various precision and semi-precision
attachment cases are reviewed along with resilient and
non-resilient bar units, joints, studs, magnets, screws,
and various accessory attachments. Numerous clinical
variants are considered such as quantity and quality
of available bone, various ridge relationships, number
of implants, anterior-posterior spread, osseointegration
and loading protocols are explained and elaborated.
Attachments and implants in various removable or fixed
prosthetics approaches are presented. Clinical cases are
reviewed and a logical approach to treatment planning is
presented, insuring long term success and patient satisfaction. Participants are encouraged to bring questions as
well as any past experiences with attachments.
Course Objectives
•Gain a full understanding of how rigid or resilient attachments work to insure successful implant prosthetics
•Explore treatment possibilities using bars and stud
attachments
•Learn how to do occlusal set ups first and work with
surgical stents
•Learn the do’s and the don’ts in attachment case
treatment planning
•Learn treatment planning differences between
implants and natural teeth
•Learn how to successfully treatment plan two to eight
implants using attachments
•Learn how accessory attachments work to enhance
retention and esthetics
•Gain new confidence in treatment planning attachment
retained fixed, segmented or overdenture prosthetics

Bringing Sexy Back to the Posterior Composite
Course Description:
What ever happened to the filling? The plain old posterior composite, where did it go? For the last ten years or
so it has been lapped by all the en vogue stuff; porcelain crowns, CAD-CAM, digital impressions, going chartless. Companies stopped advertising to dentists about
the filling, so dentists started leaving them off the treatment plans and stopped doing them altogether. This
lecture will revolutionize some practices. Imagine “wowing” every one of your restorative patients. Imagine
your patients thrilled when they leave your office. Their
excitement starts to rub off on you and the next thing
you know you are excited about doing fillings. This is a
lecture that will bring instant gratification. The attendees will learn things that they can take to their office
and implement immediately. Dr. Gammichia has put
together a lecture that is technologically advanced but
easy to understand. The lecture will walk the audience
through the steps to creating a posterior composite,
from which burs to use to what adhesives and resins
to the finishing. A filling that looks just like a natural
tooth... sounds sexy doesn’t it? Dr. Gammichia thinks
your patients will think so too.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:

• U

how to cypher through it all
