Miami Cancer Institute Breaks Ground
Continued from page 1
“We offer our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the
Dunspaugh-Dalton Foundation for the first philanthropic
donation to Miami Cancer Institute, a $1 million gift, and
to Robert and Barbara Gintel for their magnanimous
$3 million gift to support the Institute’s fundraising campaign,”
said Bill Banchs, chief executive officer of Baptist
Health Foundation.
The 395,000-square-foot Cancer Institute, to be
located on the Baptist Hospital campus, is scheduled to
open in 2016. The four-story facility will consolidate
clinical services, cancer research and technology
platforms, including the first proton therapy center in
South Florida. In addition, a brand-new inpatient floor
designed especially for cancer patients will connect
Baptist Hospital and the Cancer Institute.
“Baptist Health is dedicated to providing the best care
for cancer patients, and the world-class Miami Cancer
Institute will be unmatched in our region in terms of clinical
excellence and advanced cancer care. It will transform
cancer care in our community and across the globe,” said
Brian E. Keeley, president and chief executive officer of
Baptist Health.
Miami Cancer Institute will provide access to
sophisticated treatments and clinical trials to patients
from the community and throughout Latin America and
the Caribbean. It will be among a handful of centers in
the nation and the first in South Florida to offer proton
therapy, which beams radiation directly to a tumor to
destroy cancer cells while avoiding healthy tissue.
“The new Miami Cancer Institute allows us to combine
innovation and precision in cancer care — from detection
and treatment to clinical research and prevention — in one
place under the umbrella of Baptist Health’s well-known
high-quality patient care,” said Leonard Kalman, M.D., who
will serve as deputy director.
Miami Cancer Institute will work closely with
Advanced Medical Specialties and leading academic
cancer centers to provide the most-advanced cancer
treatment available.
“We are pleased to have such an esteemed group of
cancer specialists joining this initiative and Baptist Health
Medical Group as founding medical oncologists,” said
Wayne Brackin, chief operating officer of Baptist Health.
Miami Cancer Institute will offer comprehensive
clinical services, including:
I diagnostic imaging,
I infusion chemotherapy,
I bone marrow transplant, and
I radiation therapies, including standard radiation,
Gamma Knife, tomotherapy and proton therapy.
The Cancer Institute will leverage Baptist Health’s
nationally renowned robotic surgery program, with special
emphasis on gynecology-oncology and thoracic surgery.
Baptist Health’s highly regarded Breast Center also will
be a part of the Institute, allowing for the expansion of
services while maintaining a highly personalized approach
to breast cancer patients. In addition, the Institute will
provide special programs and support for patients’ friends
and family members.
Miami Cancer Institute’s 90,000-square-foot research
facility is designed to accommodate space for principal
investigators, researchers and staff to pursue clinical trials
and translational research.
A capital campaign is underway to support the
construction and infrastructure of Miami Cancer Institute. To
become a part of this world-class cancer facility, call Sean
Kramer at 786-596-6017, or email [email protected].
Signing a steel beam sculpture that will be installed in the completed Miami Cancer Institute were, left to right: William Banchs,
chief executive officer, Baptist Health Foundation; Larry Kahn, Board member, Baptist Hospital; Brian E. Keeley, president and chief
executive officer, Baptist Health; The Rev. Dr. William White, Baptist Health Board chairman; Wayne Brackin, executive vice president
and chief operating officer, Baptist Health; and Leonard Kalman, M.D., deputy director, Miami Cancer Institute.

A Grateful Board Thanks Robert Gintel
With sincere gratitude and appreciation for his
extraordinary service and support, Baptist Health South
Florida Foundation recently honored Robert Gintel at its
annual Board retreat at Ocean Reef. As one of the most
significant supporters of Baptist Health, Mr. Gintel and
the Gintel Family Foundation have had a profoundly
positive impact on the organization.
A true philanthropist in every sense of the word,
Mr. Gintel is a member of Baptist Health’s Chairman’s
Circle, a group of individuals who have generously
donated $5 million or more. His most recent gift, a
$3 million donation to support the Miami Cancer
Institute campaign, was made in recognition of
Brian E. Keeley, president and chief executive officer
of Baptist Health, and Suzanne Keeley, Ph.D., for their
contributions to the health and well-being of the residents
of South Florida.
_______________________________
His generosity has benefited initiatives
throughout Baptist Health.
_______________________________
His generosity has benefited initiatives throughout
Baptist Health. The Gintel Family Foundation
contributed $500,000 toward the purchase of the da Vinci
robotic surgical system for Baptist Hospital. Mr. Gintel
has supported the Center for Excellence in Nursing
Scholarship Program and has been a major sponsor of
the Mariners Hospital Gordon Present Walk/Run and
the Bougainvillea Ball.
In 2006, Mr. Gintel was introduced to eICU
LifeGuard, a high-tech electronic critical care monitoring
system. Intrigued by the technology, he immediately saw
the benefits of the system and the difference it would
make to residents of the Keys. Through the Gintel
Family Foundation, Mr. Gintel donated $1 million as the
lead gift to establish an endowment fund in support of
Mariners Hospital’s eICU.
As a volunteer, he has served on the Mariners
Hospital Operating Board since 2003. He also served
on the Mariners Hospital Foundation Board as vice
chairman and the Baptist Health Foundation Board
as treasurer, assistant treasurer and member-at-large.
His leadership and keen sense of ethics and issues have
been integral to the growth and development of the
Foundation Board, from which he recently retired.
As a staunch supporter of Baptist Health and an
altruist dedicated to the needs of his community,
Mr. Gintel’s many years of distinguished service and
outstanding generosity will be an inspiration to others
and benefit the community for generations to come.

Enjoy an Artful Evening

Philanthropist Club
Gains Momentum
Baptist Health Foundation is pleased to announce the
results of the 2014 Philanthropist Club campaign. More
than 5,400 employees contributed via payroll deduction,
PTO hours and/or credit card payments, making it the most
successful campaign to date and raising participation to
37 percent of Baptist Health employees overall. More
than $210,500 was raised and designated to 37 various
funds. The Sunshine Fund was the greatest recipient of
the campaign, receiving $48,126.48 from employees.
On August 5, Maritza Bosch, administrative assistant
III for Congregational Health, won the grand prize raffle
drawing: a two-year lease on a Mercedes-Benz CLA250,
generously donated by Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables/
Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay. The prize also included a
$7,500 cash option in lieu of the car lease. “I have never
won anything — ever, so I was very, very pleasantly
surprised,” said Ms. Bosch, who chose the cash option
and expressed her gratitude for the financial blessing.
The Young Philanthropists of Baptist Health’s
20 Something group recently held their first event at
The Hangar Gallery in Wynwood. Members
enjoyed refreshments while listening to the DJ spin
his tunes. The event featured up-and-coming local
young graffiti artist Rey Jaffet who has sold several
of his paintings to the Miami HEAT players.
The Young Philanthropists of Baptist Health is
a dynamic group of young leaders committed to
promoting the health and
well-being of the South
Florida community through
Baptist Health hospitals.

FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY
South Miami Hospital — Adolescent Bariatric Program
The Weight-loss Surgery Program offers a comprehensive approach to bariatric surgery for adolescents,
including psychological evaluation and counseling before and after surgery. Many teens who meet the health
conditions are precluded from the program because their families are underinsured or have no insurance.
Under the leadership of Anthony Gonzalez, M.D., the program will identify and underwrite the cost of the
surgery and treatment for three to five adolescents with the requisite economic need. For more information,

Giving at Year-end Benefits You and Baptist Health
The end of the year is traditionally a time to
review financial matters and reflect on your
philanthropic goals. With careful consideration to
the structure and timing of your donations, you
may find that you can make more rewarding and
meaningful gifts.
What Should You Give?
There is no easier way to obtain a charitable
deduction for 2014 — and support Baptist Health
Foundation at the same time — than by writing a
check. Make sure your envelope is postmarked by
Wednesday, Dec. 31. By meeting that deadline, it is
possible to eliminate income tax on up to 50 percent
of your taxable income. Excess charitable deductions
can be carried forward for up to five years.
Whether you have gained or been hard-hit by
fluctuations in the stock market, gifts of securities —
appreciated or depreciated — can ease your tax burden.
If you have owned a stock for more than one year,
donating it to Baptist Health Foundation offers you a
two-fold tax savings. First, you avoid capital gains tax
on the increased value of the gifted securities. Second,
you receive a tax deduction for the full fair-market
value on the date of the gift, up to 30 percent of your
adjusted gross income, with an additional five-year
carry forward.
If you own securities that have decreased in value,
consider selling those securities and making a
charitable gift of all or a portion of the cash proceeds.
This process results in a charitable deduction, as well
as a loss for tax purposes.
Charitable gift annuities or charitable remainder
trusts allow you to receive lifetime income when
donating to the Foundation. You can transfer cash or
securities now and receive an immediate income tax
deduction and a guaranteed lifetime income. This
income can be paid to you and/or a loved one for life
or a specified period, after which the assets would be
distributed to the Foundation to benefit the Baptist
Health hospital or facility of your choice.
You can contribute a life insurance policy by
naming Baptist Health Foundation as the owner and
beneficiary of the policy or simply as the beneficiary.
If you name the Foundation as owner and beneficiary,
in most cases you will be entitled to an income tax
deduction limited to the lower of the fair-market value
of the policy or your cost basis in the contract. In
addition, if you continue to pay premiums on a policy
that the Foundation owns, you can deduct the
premium payments.
Charitable IRA rollover, a popular tax-wise
giving option, available throughout 2013, has not
yet been renewed for 2014. We don’t know if
Congress will renew the charitable IRA rollover for
2014. If you are considering a charitable gift from
your IRA during tax year 2014, we encourage you to
consult your accountant or financial advisor regarding
your best course of action.
Why Not Act Today?
As you can see, there are many ways to make
meaningful charitable contributions, which can help
you, your family and Baptist Health. The Foundation
is pleased to provide additional information about
gifts you may be considering. Please contact
Annie Martinez-Lopez, Esq., development officer,
planned giving, at 786-662-8206, or email
[email protected].

‘Tis better to give and receive
Looking for a gift that keeps on giving? You
can support Baptist Health’s mission of providing
excellent healthcare to our community — and
make a great investment at the same time —
with a charitable gift annuity from Baptist
Health Foundation.
When you transfer cash or securities to the
Foundation, you receive an immediate income
tax deduction and a guaranteed fixed lifetime
income. And when the annuity ends, the remaining
principal passes to the Foundation. Not only is a
portion of these payments income tax-free, but
you may even save on capital gains tax. Plus,
your charitable gift annuity is backed by the full
financial strength of Baptist Health.
So lock in your rate now — and get a tax
deduction for 2014.
