ELECTRI International`s Annual Report 2012
Energy. Ideas. Action.
2012 Report to Stakeholders
Energy.
Ideas.
Energy. Ideas. Action. Our contractors show a great deal of
innovation and desire to improve. But we know good ideas and great
energy will sit on a shelf without action. That’s where our ELECTRI
Council shines.
Darrell Gossett
Chairman, ELECTRI Council
Action.
Energy.
When I think about everything that ELECTRI International
has done to propel our industry forward, I associate it with
Every day, we hear about the importance of energy. From the food we eat, to the cars we drive,
to the ways we communicate… every message is energy-driven. We need it. We want it. We
can’t do without it. Those of us fortunate enough to be involved with electrical construction
understand how different our world has become since we learned how to harness and use every
possible energy source. And we’re still learning.
When I think about everything that ELECTRI International has done to propel our industry
forward, I associate it with “energy”. ELECTRI is the major force of people coming together through our Foundation to
energize our common interests.
n Our ELECTRI Council members demonstrate their extraordinary energy and focus when it comes to selecting
our research agenda and working to make sure that each commissioned project meets its obligations and fulfills
our expectations.
n Our seasoned researchers and the young faculty members who analyze each project idea and come up with
the best possible approach to our research requirements are each filled with academic inquisitiveness and energy.
n Our NECA Chapters bring the energy of ELECTRI’s programs and projects back to all of their members, through
discussions, workshops with the researchers, and by staying involved in every aspect of our work.
n Our ELECTRI Board of Trustees and our ELECTRI Committees prove their energetic commitment to ELECTRI in
many ways. Their guidance and stewardship throughout the year are essential and we salute them for their work.
n Our enthusiastic – and very smart - NECA Student Chapters remind us of the energy we had when we were at
the start of our careers. Their dedication to service, volunteering, and learning gives me the confidence that we will
be leaving our industry in very capable hands.
My personal thanks to every industry member who contributes to ELECTRI’s growth and its energy. Our work is by no
means complete. But I know we have the energy to keep going and I am proud to be part of this important initiative.
Sincerely,
Dennis F. Quebe
Chairman, Board of Trustees
ELECTRI International
1
ELECTRI International prides itself on its continuous
efforts to grow and to serve the electrical construction
industry. Our track record of projects completed and
funds raised is impressive.
None of this would be possible without the dedication of
our ELECTRI Council members, our NECA Chapters, and
our industry allies. Together, we create an excitement
and an energy that builds and builds. We work hard
to ensure that the research agenda is meeting our
contractors’ needs and expectations. We know that we
influence faculty members and the way that they think
about our industry. That’s valuable for all of us.
ELECTRI offers opportunities for college students to interact with
the Foundation through our support for NECA Student Chapters, the
Student Passport Initiative, and the annual Green Energy Challenge
competition. We are helping to make sure that the next generation
knows and appreciates electrical construction as a career path.
During this past year, ELECTRI has taken several steps to streamline
its governance and operations. We work closely with NECA leaders
and the ELECTRI Council to ensure that our ELECTRI International
Board of Trustees is truly representative of the industry. We have also
re-examined our approach to research and plan to do even more to
enlist your involvement and to learn more about your ideas of what
you need to help make your business better, stronger, and more
profitable.
We have a new web site and new marketing materials. We are proud
to share these with you and hope that you will continue to find solid
value in ELECTRI International for years to come.

Energy. Ideas. Action. Our contractors show a great deal of innovation and desire to
improve. But we know good ideas and great energy will sit on a shelf without action. That’s
where our ELECTRI Council shines.
Men and women from every part of electrical construction come together as members of
the ELECTRI Council to act for our industry. We identify needs and recommend projects to
address those needs. We serve as Task Force members to help guide the researchers to the
most productive outcomes. We meet with our international counterparts to develop new
business partnerships.
One of the most important roles of the ELECTRI Council is to mentor and guide new talent.
We know that competition for talented staff members, managers and executives is intense
and getting more so every year. Through ELECTRI’s Talent Initiative, we work with NECA
Chapters to develop strong NECA Student Chapters as a talent pipeline to bring the best and brightest to our
industry and most importantly, to our NECA members and ELECTRI partners.
Finally, we never stop working to enlist new ELECTRI
Council members and we encourage those who have
already made a financial investment in ELECTRI to take
action and contribute even more to help ensure our growth
and strength. We believe that every additional member
of the Council makes us a better organization, better
equipped to make the best decisions that will have a
positive influence.

The results of our action are impressive. Let me give you
some of the numbers:
n 33 MEI programs are a direct result of ELECTRI funded
and directed research projects
n More than 25,700 students have completed the three
levels of the Electrical Project Supervision (EPS) program since it was started in 2000
n More than 450 people have taken the EPS Instructor Training Program
n Over the last three years, the Facilities Energy Audit program has offered 22 classes and reached 429 students
n This year, 20 NECA chapters received Wendt scholarships offered through ELECTRI to bring industry
educational seminars directly to their members
n Four more NECA Student Chapters were established this year alone, bringing the total to 27 at universities
across the country, each supported by ELECTRI and their local NECA Chapters
These are just a few actions that make us all proud of ELECTRI International’s accomplishments. To our current
contributors, thank you for your efforts and support. To our potential future Council members, please take the
opportunity to change our industry by joining the ELECTRI Council.
Darrell Gossett

How many times have we said to ourselves,
“I have a good idea” but then never acted on
it? Working with the ELECTRI International
Program Review Committee has shown me that
there are many ways that we can move an idea
forward. We can find—and report back on—
better ways of doing our work more efficiently,
trends that we need to understand if we are
to survive, management techniques and goals
that can be accomplished when we apply best
practices.
The Program Review Committee is not just a
once-a-year event. Our Committee works constantly to filter and
analyze the best ideas that are brought to ELECTRI’s attention from
contractors, NECA Chapters, our industry allies and the academic
community. We work to create a balance so that every sector of our
industry has the benefit of these new ideas and approaches.
I want to thank each member of the Program Review Committee for
reviewing more than 65 project proposals. Our deliberations were
thoughtful and focused and we each learned a lot about new ideas
for our industry.
This Committee confers closely with the researchers and with our
electrical contracting community to make sure that the ideas we
recommend to the ELECTRI Council have substance and value.
Periodically, we take time to analyze our own work. How did the
research we suggested turn out? Was the idea a valid one and will it
help improve our industry?
Personally, I try to remember that every idea has merit. ELECTRI
International itself was an exemplary idea and continues to
stimulate our thinking and our action. ELECTRI is a great idea.

Education Center Programs
ELECTRI International delivers quality research products
that are implemented as training programs through
NECA’s Management Education Institute (MEI).
Educational seminars and workshops are offered for
electrical contractors and their managers who need the
expertise to steer their companies through periods of rapid
change.
n In 2012, ELECTRI’s Education Center awarded Wendt
Scholarship grants to 20 NECA Chapters to offer training
through MEI for their members.
n Launched in 2007, the Talent Initiative was established
to foster interest in the electrical construction industry
among college students in construction management and
related fields. Success in the Talent Initiative will result in
well-rounded electrical managers prepared to improve the
delivery of electrical construction projects and enhance
company profits.
n In 2012, up to 23 grants will be awarded to NECA Chapters to supplement chapter scholarships and/or travel funds to
Convention for members of their Student Chapters.
n Up to 23 additional stipends will be awarded to faculty members who develop and coordinate NECA Student Chapter
activities.
n ELECTRI awards prizes to the four finalist student teams in the annual ELECTRI International Green Energy Challenge
Competition to offset travel and presentation costs. Fifteen teams participated in the 2012 Competition.
International Center Programs
Annual ELECTRI International Cross-Border Meetings were established to offer electrical contractors an opportunity to
exchange ideas with counterparts in other countries, learn about the rewards and challenges of joint ventures, and network.
n In March 2012 over 70 U.S. electrical contractors, local firms, industry partners, NECA Chapter leaders and university
faculty attending the ELECTRI International Cross Border meeting in Panama City, Panama, received a thorough briefing on
the country’s economy and its potential for cross border business opportunities.
The fourth ELECTRI International Student Service Project conducted by Syracuse University was kicked-off during the
meeting. The project will focus on improving the energy efficiency of a facility on the City of Knowledge Campus in
Panama City.

The ELECTRI Talent Initiative…
THE CHALLENGE IS ON.
Your $25,000 gift can become a $35,000 gift.
For every new $25,000 contribution, Southern Contracting (San Diego)
and O’Connell Electric (Victor, NY) will each match your gift with an
additional $5,000. All challenge gifts will be dedicated to ELECTRI
International’s Talent Initiative programs.
