PARISH OF ST. JOSEPH
January 3,2016
From the Desk of Fr. Philip Kollithanath
Meditation is a very important spiritual exercise in the Catholic Tradition. We are already rushed into a New Year full of hopes,
dreams and projects. In and above all these concerns, it is important that we live our faith sincerely and defend our faith
courageously. The first part is more challenging. We must take time on a daily basis to meditate on the realities of faith, our life, our
relationship with God through Jesus, and our true home, heaven.
The second book of the Imitation of Christ deals with interior life and the first chapter is on Meditation. In Luke 17:21 Jesus says,
“The Kingdom of God is within you”. One has to turn to God with all his heart. Your soul will find rest when you learn to despise
external things and focus on what is internal. You will experience the fruits of the Kingdom of God which are peace and joy in the
Holy Spirit. When you prepare a proper dwelling for Him in your heart, Jesus will come to you. His communion, consolation, peace
and intimacy will abound in you. If we prepare our hearts for Him, He will come to dwell within us. John 14:23 says, if anyone loves
Him and keeps His word, “ My Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him”.
Therefore we must make place for Christ in our hearts and deny entrance to all other worldly interests. When we have Christ, we are
rich and will have a certainty that He is sufficient for us. He will provide for our needs and will protect us. Human friends will
change. People who are with us today may turn against us sooner. Jesus will stand with us till the end. We need to take regular time
on a daily basis to meditate on these realities of our spiritual life
We have no lasting home here. We know that we are strangers and pilgrims in this world. We shall have no rest until we are united
with Christ. This awareness requires us to dwell more on heaven and have only a passing glance on earthly things. Everything in this
world, including ourselves, will pass away. If we cling to them we will perish with them. We must learn to fix our mind on the Lord.
Dwell on the rejection, humiliation, scorn, and sufferings He endured for our salvation. Then it is easy for us to accept challenges
and sufferings on our faith journey. Instead of complaining about obstacles and hardships, we willingly suffer with Christ and for
Him so that we will reign with Him.
“a man who is a lover of Jesus and of truth, a truly interior man who is free form uncontrolled affections, can turn to God at will and
rise above himself to enjoy spiritual peace.” IC p29. A spiritual person will soon find time for special time with the Lord. External
absurd will not disturb his peace of mind. One is upset and disturbed only in proportion as one engrosses oneself in externals. We
must learn to avoid earthly affections and impure attachments to created things which defile our hearts. when we refuse external consolation we will be able to contemplate heavenly things and experience interior joy. This is a true Catholic Spiritual Tradition we all
can practice in this New Year. God bless you all.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Over the next few weeks, if you were to stroll around Prague or Budapest or Kraków, you might see curious grafitti scratched in
chalk over some doorways:
The families dwelling behind those doors have celebrated the Epiphany door blessing. They have gathered before the feast-day
meal, probably after Mass, and the head of the family has traced the sign of the cross on the piece of chalk. Standing on a ladder, the
leader traces the numbers for the new year, and the letters C M B for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, Latin for “May Christ bless this
house.” The letters also point to the names that tradition has assigned to the mysterious magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar—
although scripture tells us nothing of their number, their country, or their names.
The blessing speaks of journeys ended and journeys begun at the doorway, and prays that all journeys be as satisfying as was the
magi’s. It prays that the house beyond the door have the quality of love and peace that the magi marveled at when they at last arrived
in Bethlehem. In some countries where the Soviet Union tried to impose a harsh atheism, the vigor of this household custom survived
all efforts to erase Christian customs. In the years of struggle, the chalked blessings were a pervasive sign of defiance, and now in the
light of new freedoms, they are a sign of the resilience of our tradition and the fulfillment of the magi’s quest for meaning and peace.

No hemos duradera casa aquí.

Él mandó a
esperanza.—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch
****************************************************
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
