episode of ‘House Hunters’

DESTIN — The red carpet
will roll out again tonight in
honor of a local Realtor.
For the third time since
2011, Destin Lowery will guide
homebuyers through the real
estate process on HGTV’s popular show “House Hunters.”
“I didn’t even plan after the
first show ever doing it again
because I was so nervous,”
Lowery said. “Each time, it’s
been easier.”
The 30-minute show lets
viewers watch as people search
for their new home with the
help of an agent. In each episode, they view three properties and select their favorite
after weighing the pros and
cons of each.
In the upcoming episode,
a Tennessee couple looked
at three places in Destin and
Miramar Beach before making a decision. A few local businesses also will get a nod in the
show, including Shake’s Frozen
Custard and Pompano Joe’s.
Lowery said the show takes
five full days of work to tape,
but is worth it for the experience she and her clients have.
“The show is fun,” she said.
“It’s just a lot of work.”
Producers approached Lowery about appearing the first
time.
“They said, ‘Is your name
Destin and you really sell in
Destin?’ ” she recalled with a
laugh.
They’ve already started

Lowery and are willing to do
more as long as she can find
clients willing to do the show.
Lowery never expected
television would be part of her
career when she started at age
24.
She got into real estate at
her father’s urging. He had
bought properties with the help
of Susie Kirkland and thought
the women would get along.
He was right. Fifteen years
later, they are going strong. For
2015, the Susie Kirkland Team
is closing in on its 60th sale
since the start of the year.
“I never dreamed in a million years it would be the way
it is,” Kirkland said. “She’s my
movie star.”

Just as they have done each
time Lowery appeared on the
show, the team has organized
a premier party complete with
a red carpet. When her last episode aired, they had about 100
people come out.
This time it likely will be a
little smaller but just as exciting because Lowery has no
idea what the show will look
like until it airs.
“It’s fun to see how it finishes up and comes together,”
she said.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Chiding Congress in no uncertain terms, President
Barack Obama warned Wednesday
that American businesses are suffering
while the Export-Import Bank lapses,
and called on lawmakers to reauthorize
the bank within days.
With Congress nearing its annual
August recess, Obama said the U.S.
“cannot leave these businesses hanging” by punting a vote to renew the
bank until after Congress returns. He
said it was a “shame” that the bank
had been allowed to expire, and said the
lapse puts the U.S. at a disadvantage
because “every other advanced country
has a program like this” to promote its
exports.
“We cannot unilaterally disarm,”
Obama said during a meeting in the
Roosevelt Room with small businesses
affected by the bank’s expiration.
“Orders are on hold. Businesses are in
danger. We need to get this done.”
An obscure federal agency unknown
to most Americans, the Export-Import
Bank underwrites loans to foreign companies that are purchasing American
products, which helps U.S. businesses
successfully market their products
overseas. Conservatives denounce it
as corporate welfare, although Obama
insisted that’s not the case. He said the
U.S. Treasury actually benefits because
the government makes money from
the bank.
The bank’s charter expired June
30 for the first time in its 81-year history because of congressional inaction.
With conservative opponents celebrating its demise, prospects to revive it are
uncertain.
Supporters in the Senate are hoping
to add it to must-pass highway legislation now being considered — and they
have the votes to prevail — but the
underlying highway legislation may run
into trouble. The House has passed
its own, shorter highway bill without
the Export-Import Bank included, and
House Republicans are opposed to the
Senate bill.
The White House not only supports
adding the bank’s reauthorization to
the bill, but “insists” it be added to
the crucial highway legislation, White
House spokesman Josh Earnest said
Wednesday.
Complicating matters, Congress’
legislative session is drawing near its
close, so supporters face the prospect of
running out of time to push the ExportImport Bank across the finish line
before lawmakers leave Washington
for their annual August recess.
“This should be a no-brainer,”
Obama said. In a jab at a controversial Republican presidential candidate,
Obama said he feels strongly about the
bank even though “I know it’s not as
interesting as some of the other issues
and Donald Trump and all that.”

University of California
system announcing plans
to increase base pay for its
employees and contract
workers to $15 an hour over
the next two years.
The move gives employees
what activists call a “living
wage.” Los Angeles, Seattle
and San Francisco have
approved phased-in increases
that will take their minimum
wage to $15 an hour, or about
$31,200 for a full-time job.
“How we support our
workers and their families
impacts Californians who
might never set foot on one of
our campuses,” UC President
Janet Napolitano said. “It’s
the right thing to do.”

Yes, things have changed
significantly since 1874, when
Cincinnati Bell (CBB-$3.86)
charged its subscribers $300
a year for a phone line not
more than 1 mile in length.
Today CBB is a diversified
telecommunications and
technology company with 3,100
employees and $1.3 billion in 2014
revenues. More than a dozen
years ago, before the iPhone
and iPad, before Netflix and
streaming, before Facebook and
Twitter, CBB was a $30 stock
with lots of promise. But leaping
changes in technology turned
CBB into a turtle on Xanax.
Serving the Cincinnati and
Dayton metro areas, CBB
operates in three business
segments: wireline, IT services
and hardware and wireless. Most
investors, however, ignore this
company and consider CBB a
Neanderthal because it provides
traditional land-based phone
services in a communications
market that is being forced out
of business by cable and wireless
competition. But investors may
not realize that in 2012, the board
decided to sell off its data storage
and wireless phone businesses
and use the proceeds to fund a
dramatic bet into a fiber-optic
cable company. With fiber optics,
signals are sent via extremely
thin strands of glass, and the
technology is 100 times faster
than conventional cable.
And CBB’s new business looks
as if it’s really beginning to pay
off. In 2014, the company’s fiber
optics division had $310 million in
revenues, which was just under
25 percent of total revenues, and
some CBB observers believe
that the amount will exceed $600
million by the end of next year.
Though revenues for 2015 are
expected to decline by about 9
percent because of CBB’s exit
from its wireless business, very
positive trends are developing for
2016. Last quarter, CBB added
11,600 new high-speed Internet
customers (it now has 124,600
subscribers) and more than
97,000 video subscribers.
The company will probably
lose 4 cents a share this year
and eke out a small profit in
2016. Sometimes making a profit
is like trying to milk an anvil.
But analysts who follow CBB
anticipate strong long-term
margin benefits when CBB exits
the wireless business. Meanwhile,
already identified cost reductions
and savings, plus growth in
its fiber optics division, should
allow CBB to post respectable
earnings by 2017. CBB doesn’t
pay a dividend, but its longterm debt of $1.6 billion is the
lowest it’s been in a dozen years.
Though this has been a rottenegg investment during the past
decade – trading as low as $1.75
– some analysts (Morningstar and
Market Edge) think CBB could
regain respectability and trade in
the mid-$5 range soon. I believe
there’s a 70-30 chance CBB can
reach the $5 to $5.50 level in the
next 18 months. But I think your
broker’s high-$20s prediction
smells like GAPO, or gorilla
armpit odor.
However, if you insist on
taking a flyer, I suggest buying
only 6,000 shares ($23,160) and
then purchasing 500 shares of
Cincinnati Bell’s 6.75 percent
Series B cumulative convertible
preferred stock (CBB-B), trading
at $49.64 and yielding 6.84 percent.
This was a $150 million initial
public offering of 3.1 million
shares in April 2000 at $50 a
share. The shares are callable at
$50 and are convertible into 1.442
shares of common stock. This
is known as a busted preferred
because the common has to
trade at such a high premium
($34.67) to the $50 call price to
break even. Investing half in the
common stock with zero dividend
and half in CBB-B will give you
a 3.42 percent current return
while you’re “waiting for Godot.”
CBB-B is not rated; however,
the preferred’s 84-cent quarterly
dividend was just paid.
