CHILDREN’S WORSHIP IS NOT CHILDCARE! IT IS THE MOST VITAL TIME OF A CHILD’S WEEK! says Jesus does not tell us to remember the better known Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Hannah or Ruth. Instead he singles out this woman whose name is not even known to us. He singles out the woman always referred to in scripture as “Lot’s wife.” What was it that Jesus felt was so important about the life of this unnamed woman that he cautioned his followers to remember her? WHAT 2. Join Jim Van Cleave this Sunday morning at 9 a.m. in the Gallery to have your memory tweaked or perhaps to learn for the first time the lessons we can learn from Lot’s wife...the woman God turned into a pillar of salt. August Leaders August 1 Paula Viner August 8 Mike Lee August 15 Becky Nichols August 22 Brent and Amy Van Zandt August 29 Sabrina holden CHILDREN’S WORSHIP? 1. IT IS A VITAL TIME OF A CHILD’S WEEK. Children’s Worship is the period of time in which they are introduced to our God. It is a time when the foundation of their faith is being laid. It is this foundation of faith on which they will build throughout their entire lives! What do you remember about the wife of Lot? What do you remember about Lot? Children’s Worship Leaders for August IS A TIME FOR CHILDREN TO LEARN FROM ADULT ROLE MODELS. Our Children’s Worship program is staffed by parents, grandparents and other adult volunteers from our congregation. Children’s Worship is a perfect opportunity for you to become acquainted with our church children. It is the perfect opportunity for you to let our children know they are loved and cared about not just by their parents but their entire church family. We have wonderful children that will let you know you are loved in return. 3. IT IS AGE APPROPRIATE WORSHIP. Children’s Worship is fun, age appropriate worship for children ages 4-2nd grade. Our children develop their understanding of God, through Bible lessons, stories, games, activities and/or crafts. 4. IT IS EASY! User-friendly lesson plans are provided ahead of time that make providing a meaningful lesson simple. There is always plenty of suggestions for things to do each week! 5. CHILDREN’S WORSHIP IS FUN! Children, the Bible, games, activities, laughter, smiles, lots of joy and hugs! What more do we need to say? CHILDREN’S WORSHIP NEEDS YOUR HELP! Please prayerfully consider volunteering to lead a week of Children’s Worship. You may call the church office or see Barb Ferguson to volunteer. Psalm 25:4 Show me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. While some students begin school August 5, the majority begin classes the following week on Monday, August 11. Students are invited to bring their backpacks (or another token of their school life or work) for this service and to place them around the Communion table or hold them during the service. By having our entire church take part in lifting children and workers up to God we are connecting Sunday and God’s presence to the rest of the week. Please extend a special invitation to all children, educators and school personnel to attend this service, Sunday, August 8, as we ask God’s blessing as they begin a new year of learning and teaching. This past week was a very unusual one for me in terms of sermon preparation. I sometimes find that a passage or a topic can’t satisfactorily be covered in a single sermon. (Obviously, no passage of scripture can easily be addressed in one sermon, but you get the point). Last week, though, I discovered that to be even more true than it usually is for me. I had everything outlined and a clear direction I intended to follow, only to discover that it was going to be virtually twice as long as a sermon normally is. That’s why, after nearly completing it, I went back to the beginning and inserted the suggestion that it would have to be divided into two sermons. Sunday, August 1, 8:00 A.M. Email: [email protected] While I had something entirely different planned for this Sunday, we’ll stick with last week’s theme and passage and continue with the second half. I’d encourage you to again read Luke 11:1-13 as we consider “Secular Theology – Part 2.” Blessings, Dennis P.S. I was a bit wary of using that title, “secular theology” because there is a specific theological movement that carries that label. We had a young man in worship Sunday who was visiting Evansville. He’s a student at Union Theological Seminary in New York and he came because he saw the sign outside and wondered how I would address “Secular Theology.” Since that wasn’t really the focus of the sermon, I’m afraid he may have been sorely disappointed! Congratulations to Patrick & Emily Murray on the birth of their son, Connor Patrick, who was born on July 20, 2010. Proud big sister is Grace. Proud grandpa is Vaughn Murray. Thank you for all of your kind words and cards at the reception last Sunday. It was so good to talk to everyone. Before I started working at Eastminster, I knew only about ten percent of the members of our congregation. As everyone walked through the reception line, I realized I not only knew everyone’s name, but I felt like you are ALL part of my Eastminster family. I look forward to many years of fellowship and sharing our faith together here at Eastminster. Thank you again. Nancy Engelbrecht That’s what you want, isn’t it? You want to make a difference in the world and in someone’s life. You long for that opportunity, don’t you? Guess what. We’ve got the perfect one for you. Think of your Saturday mornings. What occupies your time between 8:00 AM & Noon? Is it relaxing? Is it catching up on work around the house? Is it shopping? How memorable are any of those experiences for The Diner you? Wouldn’t you love to be provided a chance to do something for a brief period of time that you would clearly remember many months from now? The Diner is such an experience. On the first Saturday of each month, we have the privilege of preparing and serving a meal at The Potter’s Wheel to more than 200 individuals who may not otherwise have anything to eat that day. It’s a rewarding, humbling and very fulfilling experience. Please consider joining The Diner crew on Saturday, August 7. Call the church office if you’d like more information. Don’t conclude someone else will take your place. We’ve got an apron just waiting for YOU!
