Company
For 30 years, Balteau has been designing and building pumping and treatment installations for wastewater and drinking
water.
It has more than 80 employees and a sales turnover greater than 20 million euros.
Thanks to its mastery of the process, Balteau designs solutions best suited for its customers by reconciling investment
and operating cost limitations.
Apart from its process skills, its customers enjoy a unique service through its design office for electrical and piping and
its fabrication manufacturing and assembly teams.
Our first objective is to seek long-term customer satisfaction.
Driven by a winning spirit and anxious to contribute to environmental improvement in Wallonia and abroad, our staff use
the most appropriate technologies to answer the needs encountered.
Certain that organization and rigour ensure optimum efficiency, Balteau pays special attention to its worksite safety and
order. Balteau achieved VCA** certification on 16 July 2007.
A similar process for quality has been initiated with a view to ISO
9001-2000 certification in 2008.
Since March 2006, Balteau has integrated
Koninklijke BAM Groep nv and is a subsidiary
of BAM Wallonie.
This group of Dutch origin has more than 30,000
employees worldwide and a sales turnover of 9
billion euros.

Know-how
Balteau offer an overall service that goes from design to start-up. Balteau can also provide guidance advice to installation
operators as part of its customer service.
Our teams of engineers and technicians offer extensive innovative skills that far exceed mastery of the drinking water
or wastewater treatment processes.
Design office
• Process
Choice and sizing of treatment systems
Guide and detail drawings
• ElectricitY
Power and automation panels
PLC programming
Remote management and SCADA systems
• Piping
Layout drawings
Mechanical equipment and piping drawings
Workshops
Balteau has two workshops :
• electrical cabinets wiring workshop
• welding workshop
Assembly
Equipment is mainly assembled by Balteau teams. The possible use
of subcontractors is supervised by experienced leaders.
Start-up
Our technicians undertake commissioning and electro-mechanical
start-up.
The process start-up manager is responsible for fine-tuning the
process and ensures phase loading of the installations. They
optimize plant performance and compliance with discharge
standards.
Operational assistance
To support customer operations, Balteau advises on process
running.
Balteau process engineers use the latest technologies for
remotely managing facilities and have powerful design software
for modelling different processes and their dynamic simulation
(WEST).
Drinking water
Balteau operates throughout the drinking water cycle.
• surface or underground water catchment, ,
• ß purification or conditioning treatment
• pumping for transfer or overpressure boosting
Treatment plants equipped with closed or open filters eliminate a range of unwanted elements (suspended solids, iron,
manganese, nitrates, pesticides, flavours or odours, etc.).
Water can be disinfected by injecting products such as chlorine or ozone or by UV radiation from mercury vapour
lamps.
Quality requirements are increasingly specific whereas raw water quality is tending to deteriorate.
Ultrafiltration, nanofiltration or reverse osmosis techniques provide answers to the identified problems.
Balteau engineers select the products and technologies best suited to answer each application.
The pumps equipping pumping stations or booster can be controlled at fixed or variable speed.
Waste water
Whether in collectors or as part of purification plants, it is necessary to lift wastewater using submersible pumps,
surface pumps or Archimedean screw pumps.
In order to meet the various discharge standards, we use a range of water
purification techniques for different needs:
•
•
•
•
Traditional activated sludge, SBR, aerated lagoon
Biorotors
Membrane bioreactor
Physico-chemical treatment
Water treatment processes are naturally completed by sludge
dehydration treatments. The following are used according to
customer needs:
• Sludge thickener, drying beds
• Belt filter, centrifuge, filter press
• Lime
Unwanted smells are reduced by using odour control processes: chemical scrubber,
biological filter, activated carbon absorption.
Existing
plants
sometimes
require refurbishment (renovation, new discharge standards, higher
loads, etc.).
One of the main challenges of this type of project is the need to
carry out work without interrupting existing treatments, with special
attention being paid to work phasing.
In this area, Balteau has considerable experience and is especially
efficient thanks to the integration of a whole range of services essential
to successfully meeting this type of technological challenge (process,
electricity and automation, piping).
Leachates
Rainwater percolating through waste in landfill sites produces an effluent called leachate.
Leachate is characterized by high loads of nitrogen and COD. It has a characteristic smell and brown colour, which is
produced by the presence of humic acids.
•Prolix® process treatment
LeThe Prolix® process results from more than 15 years experience in treating landfill leachates.
It consists in a membrane bioreactor (MB) coupled with a secondary treatment, either by activated carbon
filtration or by reverse osmosis according to waste standards.
The synergy of all the unit processes implemented offers an optimized solution ensuring very high purification yields
with well-controlled operating costs.
Advanced system automation reduces operating
costs to a minimum.
References in service for more than 10 years
confirm the relevance of the specific membrane
technology selected which gives Prolix
exceptional reliability.
Biogas
Biogas is the product of the fermentation of the
biodegradable fraction of waste buried in landfill
sites.
It has to be pumped to ensure waste degassing and
can be eliminated by incineration in a flare or valorised
in gas engines or turbines to produce electricity or
heat (cogeneration).
Balteau has developed know-how in the pumping,
treatment and energy recovery of the biogas
produced in landfills.
Export
The companies of the BAM group are active in Holland, Belgium, UK, Ireland and Germany. Tebodin and Interbeton
are active in wide scale export and cover, in addition to the above, the East European countries, Asia, Middle East and
North Africa.
This group of Dutch origin has more than 30,000 employees worldwide and a sales turnover of 9 billion euros.
Based on this international scope and the success of a first venture in Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, STEP 200,000 PE),
Balteau has decided to undertake international projects from 2008.
We wish to valorise the experience acquired through many references in Belgium in foreign countries in partnership
with local companies.
Cooperation with civil engineering firms that build plant structures is one of the key success factors of our projects.
The fabrication of electrical panels and piping as well as assembly are preferably reserved for our local partners who
benefit from the support of our specialists and in-depth business knowledge.
Commissioning and electro-mechanical start-up are carried out under Balteau’s supervision.
Our process start-up managers are responsible for optimizing plant performance and compliance with discharge
standards.
