Muiños Town Council
Muiños is a town council with approximately 2,000 inhabitants, spread over
an area of 109 sq.km. close to the Portuguese border, in the valleys of the
River Salas and the River Limia (reservoir of As Conchas). Part of a nature
reserve spreading over Spain and Portugal, the Biosfera Transfronteriza
Geres-Xurés, is in Muiños.

Welcome to the Transboundary Biosphere
Reserve Gerês-Xurés
The Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Gerês-Xurés (RBTGX) was declared on May 27, 2009,
by UNESCO, and is located in the Autonomous Community of Galicia (Spain) and the North
Região (Portugal), covering a total of 267,958 has. of protected land in two areas divided by
natural boundaries, yet united by the characteristics of nature and culture.
Being a Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, the cooperative effort between the territory and
institutions of both countries, in setting common goals, define priorities for action, and
articulate management strategies contribute to consolidate the image of Transboundary Park
Gerês-Xurés, created between the Natural Park Serra do Baixa Limia Xurés and Peneda Gerês,
established in 1997, forming an environmental unit of high biodiversity.
More than a designation, the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Gerês-Xurés intended as
recognition of the need for a common and coordinated effort to safeguard the values of flora,
fauna and landscape, which share the two protected areas, promoting economic development
sustainable, and promoting the active participation of stakeholders in the territory by promoting and demonstrating a balanced relationship between people and nature.

ACCOMMODATION
O CORGO TOURIST COMPLEX
The principal recreational areas in Muiños are the Outeiro de Cela Natural Park, around the
reservoir of As Conchas, and the recreational area in Maus de Salas. Outeiro de Cela extends
over 26 hectares and boasts two river beaches, picnic areas, a cafeteria and other services. A
large-scale forestry re-planting is taking place in the area, with over 30,000 trees of more than
60 different species.
A campsite provides tent space for up to 350 people, and 6 additional bungalows, each with
two rooms and a bathroom. The O Corgo building provides hostel-type lodging for large groups,
accommodating up to 106 people in dormitories with 30, 20, 15, 10, 6 and 4 beds. Kitchen facilities are provided, with views over the reservoir, which is available for a number of sports.
For families and small groups, the A Rola residence provides ensuite accommodation in rooms for to 6 people. Facilities include a restaurant and cafeteria, with open air terraces, and a
youth centre in the management area.
Next to these facilities, a beautiful river beach is on the shores of the As Conchas reservoir. A
wharf with pontoon, a boat house, boat and canoe hire are available, as are lifebelts, lifeboats
and lifeguards in case of emergencies. Also available, leisure staff, multipurpose room, activities like Walking and Trekking and guided hiking and others sports.
Not less important, on the same reservoir of As Conchas there are other river beaches, “Touza
de A Rola” and “Isla de Pazos”.
