Did you know in New Zealand one in four females and one in eight males are likely to experience sexual violence,
most before the age of 16?
This shocking fact is part
of
what
Louise
Nicholas,
renowned and prominent rape
survivor, will be speaking on
in Whitianga on 10 September.
Louise will share her journey
through life and the work she now
does as a survivor advocate with
Rape Prevention Education (RPE),
a non-profit agency focused on
the prevention of sexual violence
through education and community
work.
Louise is brought to Mercury
Bay by a local drug rape survivor
who has received an enormous
amount of help and support from
her. “Louise’s strength and courage
is such an inspiration to me,
she has given me hope that healing
is possible,” the survivor said.
Louise is first and foremost a
wife and mother. She has been
married to her husband, Ross for 26
years and they have four children.
“My family is my life. Without their
love, support and encouragement,
I would never have walked the
rocky path to seek the justice I felt
I deserved or been able to take on
the role of survivor advocate,”
Louise said.
Louise is a survivor of childhood
and adult rape. She was a victim of
a crime committed against her by
serving members of the New Zealand
Police and is a survivor of a justice
system that saw her battle her way
through two deposition hearings
and and a number of very prominent
court cases. “I was slammed around
the courtroom like a tennis ball,
was told that I was nothing but an
uneducated, vindictive, sex crazed
liar by defence lawyers, but still
I held my head high, I knew the
truth, I knew what happened and
nothing they could say or do in that
courtroom could hurt me anymore,
it was my time to take back the
power and control that was stripped
from me, this was my justice…”
Louise was voted the New Zealand
Herald’s New Zealander of the Year
in 2007 and was also placed in the
top ten as one of “New Zealand’s
Living Treasures.” She co-wrote the
bestselling book “Louise Nicholas
- My Story” with Phil Kitchin,
the Dominion Post reporter who
broke her story in 2004. That led to
a full Police investigation known as
Operation Austin and a Commission
of Inquiry into Police Conduct.
An updated edition of the book was
released in July this year.
A movie about Louise’s fight
for justice, “Consent - The Louise
Nicholas Story” screened on
television last Sunday night.
Talking about her own experience,
the local drug rape survivor said

The Coromandel may get its own Race to the Sky
Thames Coromandel District Council
mayor, Glenn Leach would like to see
the Coromandel hosting its own Race to
the Sky hill climb in the next few years.
Race to the Sky was a famous South
Island hill climb event in the Cardrona
Valley near Wanaka until Possum
Bourne, one of New Zealand’s most
famous rally drivers of all times,
was killed in the 2007 event. It was
last week announced that the event
will return to the New Zealand racing
calendar in 2015.
“The product we will offer will be
different from Cardona,” said Mr Leach.
“With our close proximity to Auckland,
the Waikato and the Bay of Plenty,
many rally or hill climb competitors
who wouldn’t normally go to the South
Island, will be able to participate in a
challenging hill climb event within three
hours of where they live.
“I think one half of the Tapu-Coroglen
road will be the ideal track for a gravel
hill climb. It’s about 7km to the top,
with not many people living off the road.
Some of the stages of this weekend’s
Goldrush Rally of Coromandel will take
place on the road and also on the 309.
I have little doubt that the rally
participants will really enjoy the
challenge our roads have to offer.
“We have in any event arranged to sit
down later in the year with Rally New
Zealand, Rod Millen, a previous Pikes
Peak [a famous hill climb in the United
States] and Cardrona record holder and
some of the participants in this weekend’s
Goldrush Rally, including Alex Kelsey
from Coromandel Town, to talk about
the Tapu-Coroglen and how it may shape
up as the track for a hill climb event.
We’re not just going to rush into this.
It’s important that we do our homework
and that we do it well.
“If we can pull this event off, and it can
become an annual event, the economic
boost it will bring to the Coromandel as
a whole will be enormous.
“Imagine 200 or so participants
qualifying in four-wheel and two-wheel
drive and classic classes over a three or
four day period with the semi-finals and
final over a weekend? With family and
support crew, we talk about more than
a 1,000 people coming to the Peninsula
over a week long period. And then we
haven’t even started to talk about the
spectator potential, corporate packages
and, of course, the long term benefits of
media exposure.
“We’ve already spoken to TV3 and
they indicated a willingness to cover the
event. Now just imagine a helicopter
panning around from the Peninsula’s
east coast to west coast, showing
off our unparalleled natural beauty.
With the Leadfoot Festival, the Beach
Hop, the Targa Rally and the Goldrush
Rally it’s going to be hard to get a better
advertisement than that.”
This is a space to watch. The Informer
will keep you posted.
Dune planting day in Whitianga
Many Mercury Bay locals helped last week Saturday to plant another approximately 150m
of dunes along Buffalo Beach in Whitianga. It’s the third year the public planting day was
held. This year more than 1,000 native plants that’s effective in binding sand dunes together
have been planted.

Louise Nicholas to speak in
Whitianga
(Continued from page 1)
a drink she had one evening years ago
was “spiked” with a drug that left her
with no memory for eight hours. “As a
result of this hideous crime, I am now
challenged with post-traumatic stress
disorder,” she said. “I was failed by the
very first emergency department doctor
who judged me as just a drunken girl.
For years I grappled with how anyone
would ever believe me? I kept my
feelings and my thoughts repressed for
a long, long time. It has been a long,
difficult and painful journey.
“Having Louise to talk to has made me
feel validated and made me realise that
I’m not alone. She could instantly relate
to what I was going through. It has helped
me so much to have Louise supporting
me through the healing process.
“I have learnt that the best medicine
of all is to let it out, to talk about how
you feel and slowly to work through
your unresolved grief, denial doesn’t
help. It was important to find the right
person. Someone I felt safe with and
trusted to help me in my healing journey.
I encourage other survivors to find the
strength and come forward to start their
journey to healing. Healing is possible.
Louise is living testament of this.”
Everyone will benefit from listening
to Louise, parents, grandparents,
young men and women. You may not
be directly affected by sexual violence,
but the social cost is high. Too many
mental health issues and suicides are the
result of sexual abuse.
You will hear how parents and carers
can support the young people in our
community, how to keep yourself safe
and about the consequences sexual abuse
have on survivors and their families.
You will understand that “no” really
means “no.” Louise will emphasise
that help is available for rape survivors,
that they aren’t alone and that there are
people who will believe them and who
they can trust. She will also talk about
the high profile “Roast Busters” case
that is currently working its way through
the legal system.
Louise’s talk is free and will be held
at 7:00pm in the drama room of the
performing arts block at Mercury Bay
Area School. The updated edition of
“Louise Nicholas - My Story” will be
available for purchase and Louise will
be happy to sign copies afterwards.
The New Zealand Herald said in 2007,
Louise Nicholas “… has shown a rare
resilience, turning a life that could have
been a shattered ruin into a beacon of
hope.” Her story is a must hear.
Any sexual abuse survivors in
need of help can phone the National
Support Line on 0800 88 33 00.
If you need support to make the call,
Jenny Wolf and her team at Whitianga
Social Services will be happy to assist.
Call in at 2 Cook Drive or phone them
on 866 4476.

the agencies listed on RPE’s website,

Z Nail Gang, the New Zealand made movie based on the Kuaotunu anti-mining protests
of the 80’s premiered in Whitianga last week Thursday.
It was a glamorous affair with Nedilka Radojkovich and Kylie DellaBarca Steel,
the producer of the movie, arriving in a Moxy truck and Mark Tugendhaft and actor
Coben Storer-Goto emerging from a police car. Mark and Nedilka were prominent in
the anti-mining protests and are still part of the Kuaotunu community. Coben played
the “good cop” in the movie.
Everyone who attended the premiere agreed that the movie, which is now screening
at Mercury Twin Cinemas in Whitianga, is well worth a watch.
Pictured are, from left to right - Coben, Kylie, Nedilka and Mark.

Toya Fleetwood is an emerging talent on the local music scene.
She is now a familiar face in the music venues around the Coromandel.
She does a wide range of tasteful covers including Fleetwood Mac,
but her original songs are special and a real treat.

The magical inhabitants of a rainforest fight to save their home, which is threatened by logging and a polluting
force of destruction called Hexxus. This was one of my favourite films when I was growing up. And it’s still
relevant today, with the increasing number of rainforests being destroyed. This is a wonderful family film.
Also it’s the first ever animated film that Robin Williams did, who sadly passed away last week. So I wanted to
share a favourite of mine that he was involved in. Reviewed By Cara.

According to organiser David Hall, ticket sales for the two charity concerts featuring Emilie
(pictured) at the Mercury Bay Club on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August are going very well.
A new initiative a number of local businesses have excitedly bought into, is sponsored seats.
The concept is quite simple - a local business sponsor a few seats at the concert, which will be
handed out to members of the community.
To date the following businesses have sponsored seats - PlaceMakers, Platinum Homes,
Pania and Mark Little from Photo Booth, Worthy Windows, New World, Buffalo Beach Four
Square, BNZ, Whitianga Signs, Mosaic Gallery, Z Service Station, East Coast Automotive and
Mastercraft Kitchens.
David is now looking for people to hand the sponsored seats out to. “It can be someone who
has done something special for someone in our community, cared for someone who has been
sick or a good Samaritan who continues to do good work in our community, such as the ladies
from the op-shops who volunteer and give of their time, to the elderly who may not be able to
afford to come to the show or someone who has been a little down,” he said. “Our aim is simply
to put a little smile on someone’s face and bring some joy in our community while raising funds
for a great cause.”
If you can think of someone who can do with a bit of good quality entertainment, please contact
David on email [email protected] or telephone 866 2250. And if you would like to
sponsor a seat or two, David would love to hear from you too.
The concerts are for the benefit of Whitianga Social Services’ Youth Space.

A bittersweet 18 months for the
Camerons of Whitianga Fruit &
Vegetables - but things are looking up
been removed and he’s now undergoing
a six month series of preventative
chemotherapy. “Dr Dan Asquith from
Mercury Bay Medical Centre and the
Cancer Society looked after me very
well,” said Michael.
Michael and Roberta will use the next
few months to get ready for summer
and hopefully by the end of the season
Michael will have made a full recovery.
“And we’ll continue to do in the
shop what we know really works,”
said Roberta. “Things like buying
direct from local growers as much as
we can and also growers from further
afield where we can’t get the products
we’re looking for locally. And stocking
really good quality complimentary
products - flowers, specialty cheeses,
smoked salmon, when its available,
Couplands bread and other products and
the like.
“And in between, we’ll try to spend as
much time as we can with our youngest
grandchildren in Auckland, four years
old and twins of 22 months.”
“Yes,” added Michael, “I’m going to
see the twins turn 21. Of that I’m sure.”

Michael and Roberta Cameron are
getting ready for their second summer
as the owners of Whitianga Fruit &
Vegetables at 30 Monk Street, just down
from Albert Street.
They moved from the Waikato to
the Coromandel about three years
ago, initially settling in Te Puru. “But
then we happened to visit friends here
about 18 months ago and they told
us the fresh produce store that was in
town had closed down and maybe we
should consider stepping into the void,”
said Roberta.
“Michael and I have together been in
groceries and fruit and vegetables for
more than 35 years. The shop we’re in
now became available and we thought,
‘Why not?’ So much for a quieter life on
the Coromandel.”
Michael and Roberta’s first year and
a half in Whitianga were bittersweet.
They think the local people are very
friendly and they really enjoy interacting
with customers. Unfortunately Michael
was diagnosed with cancer, the treatment
of which took him away from the shop
for long periods at a time.
The good news is that all the cancer has

Guitar fingerpicking wizard
coming to Mercury Bay
“Munted” a means to really
understand what the February 2011
Canterbury earthquake was like
Last week Wednesday evening a soldout audience witnessed at the Monkey
House Theatre in Whitianga a powerful
theatrical response to the 22 February
2011 earthquake in Canterbury.
“Munted,” performed by Victoria
Abbott, Jackie Shaw and Frith Horan, is a
verbatim recollection of the way various
Cantabrians experienced the earthquake.
There was the dentist who thought he
was cycling through a shallow puddle of
water and ended up in a deep hole that
wasn’t there before, the family of grocers
who had to clean up in darkness similar
to “the inside of a black cow,” the school
teacher who found the earthquake both
terrifying and fascinating, the police
officer and journalist who were both at
the coal face of the human tragedy that
accompanied the disaster, the Maori
couple who helped out at the Marae in
the aftermath and many others.
Creative Mercury Bay will the end of this month be hosting a public performance,
followed by a two-hour workshop, with American guitar fingerpicking wizard,
Richard Gilewitz.
Described by 20th Century Guitar Magazine as, "A powerhouse of eclectic guitar
styles and genres,” Richard is a professional touring musician who has inspired
players and fascinated listeners worldwide with his six and 12-string finger
gymnastics for more than three decades.
The concert and the workshop will take place on Saturday 30 August at the Monkey
House Theatre in Coghill Street, Whitianga. The hour-long concert will start at
3:00pm. Tickets cost $15 each and can be purchased at Paper Plus in Whitianga.
The two hour workshop will start at 3:15pm. The workshop is designed for all
levels of guitar playing, from beginner to advanced. Registration costs $15.
For more information contact Jan Wright on email [email protected]
or phone 027 224 1927.
In the q & a session after the performance,
the audience were in agreement about one
thing - the performance gave everyone
a much better understanding of what it
really was like to be in Christchurch on
the day the earthquake struck. Touching
also were the comments from a couple in
the audience who lived in Christchurch
at the time of the earthquake and
their agreement that the performance
portrayed things as they were.
The dentists said at some point during
the performance that the earthquake was
30 seconds that changed everyone’s
lives for ten years. Every member of
the audience walked out of the Monkey
House Theatre understanding exactly
what he meant.
Munted was brought to Whitianga by
Arts on Tour NZ and Creative Mercury
Bay.

The Mercury Bay Art Escape Trust is looking forward to the Coromandel Peninsula Art and Craft
Fair that will be held in the Whitianga Town Hall on Saturday 23 August from 9am - 3pm.
Last year’s successful inaugural event attracted over 500 visitors. The fair this year has more
artists exhibiting, both emerging and established, all showcasing high quality work in a
variety of media, including textiles, jewellery, photography, furniture, pottery, prints, paintings,
candles and decoupage.
The Trust’s main event is the Mercury Bay Art Escape Open Studio Tour, held the first two
weekends of March. This annual self-drive open studio tour centres around the coastal area of
Mercury Bay, from Otama to Pauanui, and features some 50 artists.

“Rockin’ good way”

When Mercury Bay’s champion rock ’n rollers, Greg and Chris Sammons decided to teach their
granddaughter, Bella Ramage how to rock ‘n roll, Bella asked Aaron Johansen to be her dance
partner.
Aaron was too happy to oblige and from April this year the two have been practicing under the
watchful eye of Greg and Chris. Their aim was to participate in the club championship of the
Drifters Rock ‘n Roll Club in Hamilton.
The championship took place on 9 August and Bella and Aaron did exceptionally well,
claiming first place in both the novice and junior sections and placings in some of the other
categories. Not happy to remain in the shadow of their students, Greg and Chris promptly
secured a few first places too, including in the masters section.
Well done to the contingent from Mercury Bay. Roll on the nationals!

Overwhelming support for
Rebecca Gordon in Bali
Early last week 24-year-old Rebecca
Gordon, a long-haul air hostess who
grew up in Whitianga, injured her head
in a bad fall while on holiday in Bali.
Friends took her to hospital, where she
was given painkillers. Back at the hotel
it soon became apparent that something
far worse than a headache was wrong
with her. Rebecca’s sister, Kelly Austin,
who now lives on the Queensland
Gold Coast, put out a distress call
via Facebook to all the New Zealand
and Australian expats in Bali. An
Australian nurse working at a hospital
in Bali immediately came forward and
took Rebecca to a different hospital,
where she was diagnosed with severe
swelling of the brain and told that she
needed emergency surgery.
The problem was Rebecca didn’t have
any travel insurance and the hospital
wasn’t willing to operate if they weren’t
sure that they were going to get paid.
The Australian nurse immediately
stepped in and offered to pay for the
care Rebecca needed on her credit card.
“That woman is an angel,” said Jude
Gordon, Rebecca’s mother and wellknown Whitianga local. “We’ll always
be grateful for what she did for us.”
In the meantime, Kelly arranged some
bridging finance to reimburse the
Under Construction
Australian nurse and jumped on a plane
to be with Rebecca in Bali.
Rebecca’s other sister, Haley Goodall
from Kuaotunu, wasn’t sitting idle
either. Realising that Rebecca will
be facing many more medical bills,
she set up a Give-a-Little page (https://
givealittle.co.nz/cause/BringBecHome),
which raised $21,000 in just more than
four days.
Rebecca will undergo a further CT
scan in the next few days, which will
determine if she needs more surgery.
After she has been discharged from
hospital, she will have to stay in Bali
until such time as she’s declared
medically fit to fly back to New Zealand.
The Australian nurse who came to
Rebecca’s rescue in the first instance,
offered for Rebecca and Kelly to stay
with her at her home while Rebecca is
recovering.
“Our faith in humanity has been
strengthened so much through this
ordeal,” said Jude. “We deeply want to
thank everyone who helped in some way
or form. As a family we are overwhelmed
and humbled. Words cannot explain how
appreciative we are.”
Anyone who would like to make
a contribution to the Gordon family,
can do so through the Give-a-Little page.

Museum Musings
Under Construction
with Richard Gates
A hundred years ago this month New
Zealand was committed to a war
under circumstances which are little
understood today. In the first instance
World War One, or the Great War,
was essentially a European conflict
far removed from our hemisphere.
So how did New Zealand become
involved?
On Tuesday 4 August 1914
Britain declared war on Germany
following Germany's violation of
Belgium neutrality and word of the
declaration of war by King George
V was received in Wellington on
5 August 1914. On the same day the
Governor-General of New Zealand,
Lord Liverpool, standing on the
steps of parliament in front of a
crowd of 15,000 people, announced
that New Zealand would follow suit
by declaring war too.
However, the government of New
Zealand had little need to make
such a declaration as research shows
that New Zealand was bound by a
constitutional framework in which
certain prescriptive protocols meant
New Zealand was subservient to
the decisions of the then "Mother
Country." At the time, New Zealand
was not an independent sovereign
state, but a dominion of the British
Empire. This conferred the privilege
of domestic self-rule, but all external
relations, including the power to make
war, remained the sole prerogative of
the British Government in London.
When the British government
declared war on Germany in 1914,
it did so on behalf of the entire British
Empire, including the dominions of
New Zealand, Canada, Australia,
South Africa and Newfoundland.
No separate declaration of war by
New Zealand, or any other dominions
was required - or indeed possible
under the imperial constitutional
framework that existed then.
After Britain's declaration of war, it
was simply a question of how New
Zealand would contribute to the
Empire's war effort, not if.
Despite
New
Zealand
not
having a say in its destiny in 1914,
patriotic fervour took over and young
Kiwi's in their thousands flocked to
volunteer for military service. Given
the population of New Zealand at the
time was just over one million, the
contribution of men and resources
to the European conflict were
staggering. By the end of the 1914/18
war, 100,444 servicemen and nurses,
both Pakeha and Maori, served 10 per cent of New Zealand's total
population. 16,697 Kiwis were killed
and 41,317 wounded, a casualty rate
of 58%. New Zealand had one of
the highest casualty and death rates
per capita of any country involved
in the Great War. These losses are
reflected in the many war memorials
throughout all communities in our
country. It has been said that every
family in New Zealand was affected
in one way or another by the Great
War.
The Mercury Bay area is
no exception, contributing a
proportionally high number of young
men to the cause from a sparsely
populated part of the country.
They bravely served, suffered
and died in circumstances that are
difficult to comprehend.
The Mercury Bay Museum
is developing a display to give
recognition and honour those who
served during World War One.
The
exhibits
will
include
memorabilia,
artifacts,
diaries,
letters, medals, service records and
family recollections of loved ones
who served or died during the conflict.
The Museum welcomes family
descendants of servicemen adding to
the collection of memorabilia should
they so wish.

Civic Video directly.
A good start to the week with all the
stars lining up to give us 5 - 10 knot
variables on a Sunday. For many
fishers this was all the encouragement
they needed and the boat trailer
carparks were well utilised as they
set off in search of a feed.
Quite a number of skippers headed
out to the area from Ohinau and
Flat Islands to the Black Rocks
and others further out to Stanley,
Double and Red Merc. By all
accounts the fishing was excellent
with some good size snapper taken
from each of these areas, many in
excess of 5kg and one that weighed
in at 8.22kg.
A low tide late in the morning
slowed the catch rate for a while,
causing a fair bit of musical chairs
with the boats as they moved around
looking for fish, but most reported
that the bite came back on soon after.
For those not wanting to head
that far out, snapper in the region of
45cm long were caught just inside
the Twins, on the Whau Whau and
towards Centre Island. One or two
guys fishing fairly regularly off
Shakespeare are still doing well too.
A couple of young guys not too
worried about how much fuel they
used, headed about 40 miles north
east of here and were well rewarded
with several bluenose and a very
tasty bass. In the other direction,
Toby Kemp and Leanne Dixon
(Reel Adventures) further enhanced
their reputation as kingfish gurus
when they put an angler onto a kingi
that topped the scales at 28.22kg.
With the whitebait season now
underway, the baiters will be lining
the shores upstream when conditions
are right and no doubt we will start
to see the odd pound or two around
town very soon.
Those with a taste for scallops will
be watching the calendar with the
recreational season opening in about
a fortnight. Whilst the sizes coming
in from the commercial guys are
not setting any records, they seem a
little fatter than they were this time
last year and hopefully prolonged
westerly winds will help them put
on condition in time for the season
start on 1
September.
Tight lines,
Alan

Another gold for HAMR Home
Building Contractors
Richard and Hannah Warwick of HAMR
Home Building Contractors did it
again. This time a house in Centennial
Drive, Whitianga gave them gold at
the 2014 Auckland Master Builders
House of the Year Awards. Last year,
in the 2013 awards, it was a house
on Whitianga’s Buffalo Beach Road.
They have also received the award for
best house entered in the $600,000 $1 million category. They received the
same award in 2013.
“Our
philosophy
is
simple,”
said Richard. “We build every house,
regardless of size and budget, to a
standard fit to enter the Master Builders
Awards. It ensures that we give our
absolute best.
The house that gave Richard and
Hannah gold this year is over two
stories and just under 300m² in size.
“Technically it was a challenging
house,” Richard said. “It was turned at
a 30 degree angle to maximise views
with lots of individual outdoor spaces.
An interesting feature is an outdoor
lounge. It’s a patio that can be closed
in with cedar shutters all around.
When closed in it’s really like an
additional room in the house.
“The house is cladded with cedar on
the outside and on the inside there’s a
lot of oak and stainless steel. Another
interesting feature is an exposed honed
concrete block spine wall through the
length of the house. Honed concrete
blocks are sanded so that you can see the
individual stones in the blocks.
“At the end of the day the award is
testament to the professionalism and
craftsmanship of everyone who worked
on the house, not only our HAMR Home
Building Contractors team, but also all
the subcontractors we used. We always
attempt to use local where we can.
In this case everyone was local, except
the joinery and kitchen suppliers and
installers, whom the owners of the house
have a special relationship with.”
The owners of the house live in
Rotorua, but plan on moving to
Whitianga permanently in the near future.
“We took the owners with us to the
Master Builders Awards,” Richard said.
“They were even happier than us when
we were announced as the category
winner. It’s nice to think that we could
deliver them a true award-winning
house.”

The Mercury Bay community has now the opportunity to get behind Jenny Edwards (pictured)
and vote for her as their “People’s Choice” in the Pride of New Zealand Awards.
Jenny was a few weeks ago announced as the Central North Island winner in the awards’
Lifetime Achievement category.
There are six categories in total and with four regional winners in each category, the public can
vote for one of 24 candidates as their favourite. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in
Auckland on 10 September, together with the national winners of the six categories.
Jenny, a double cancer survivor, founded the Mercury Bay Cancer Support Group more than
25 years ago. She has recently stepped down as co-ordinator. Talking to her about the Pride
of NZ Awards, she said, “To have been nominated was a big surprise and to have won the
Central North Island category was overwhelming. I was in my years with the Cancer Support
Group just one member of a team. Cancer is an issue that will never go away. Cancer patients
need all kinds of support and I was just too happy to help where I could. I loved my years with
the Cancer Support Group. I think, in a way, what has been attributed to me in the Pride of NZ
Awards, is recognition of what we, as a group, have achieved over the years.”
Jenny has unselfishly served the Mercury Bay community for many, many years. Let’s show
our appreciation by supporting her as our “People’s Choice” in the Pride of NZ Awards.
Voting (at www.prideofnzawards.co.nz) will only take a minute.

Daffodil Day is around the corner
The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer
Society’s annual Daffodil Day appeal
is just around the corner on Friday 29
August. Mercury Bay Cancer Support
Group treasurer, Ann Mulcahy and all
the members of the Mercury Bay Cancer
Support Group have been hard at work
to ensure everything will run smoothly
on the day of and the maximum amount
of money will be raised.
Ann, a Whitianga resident for 13
years, has been part of the Cancer
Support Group for the past three years.
“Four years ago, I was diagnosed with
bowel cancer,” she said. “The cancer
support group helped me in various
ways throughout my journey, from
emotional support to helping me with
travel expenses. Once I had improved
I wanted to help, I wanted to give
something back.”
Ann is now one of 12 members of the
group who support to people within the
community when they need it most.
The group has run the Daffodil Day
appeal in Whitianga for more than 20
years.
This year volunteers will man
five stalls around Whitianga, at the
i-Site in Albert Street, New World,
The Warehouse, Buffalo Beach Four
Square and Countdown, where the
public can make a donation in return for
a small fabric daffodil or buy a bunch of
good quality daffodils for $5.00.
“In the evening, volunteers dressed
in daffodil hats will be visiting the local
pubs, bars and restaurants jingling their
fundraising buckets for donations,” said
Ann.
“We will also have two stalls in Hahei
and Cooks Beach and in Matarangi
volunteers will ask for donations going
around in a golf cart.”
Earlier in the week of the appeal
members of the Cancer Support group
will be picking daffodils growing in
the wild and hand them around various
Mercury Bay businesses.
Cancer Society spokesperson, Rachael
Mounsey said that when people make
a donation this Daffodil Day, they are
donating to a cause that’s close to home.
“People like to know that the money
they give stays locally and assists those
in their local community, we can give
people that guarantee.
“The Cancer Society receives no direct
government funding. Every Daffodil Day
we are overwhelmed at the generosity of
communities in our region and we make
sure that every dollar counts, minimising
expenses and channelling every dollar
possible back into free support services.”
Donations from Daffodil Day are
relied on to provide supportive care
for cancer patients, their carers,
family and friends, to fund cancer
research and to provide the public
with information on the ways to
reduce the risk of cancer through
a smoke free, sun smart, healthy
lifestyle.

To the Editor
See page 2 for our requirements with regard to letters and contributions
Dear Editor - Z Nail Gang
I hope that the local screenings of the “Z Nail Gang” film are a timely reminder of the
current threat hanging over the Mercury Bay community.
It was a shock to discover that there are mining exploration permits,
right now, held over much of the hills around Whitianga, Hahei, Kuaotunu, etc especially disappointing after the heroic battle in the 1980’s to protect this lovely
area from degradation. Mining would be an economic disaster for Mercury Bay, not
just an ecological one. In today's climate of corporate legislative capture, some “Z
Nail” style tactics would probably fall foul of anti-terrorism laws and the like, so it is
important to put a stop to the mining threat before it can get as far as it did in the past.
I hope that Mercury Bay locals and visitors are able to raise enough awareness to
effectively lobby for protection of this unique region.

August is traditionally the slowest
month for visitors to The Coromandel,
and this August has been no exception.
There are still a few brave tourists out
taking advantage of the warm winter
and many are willing to risk a dousing
in the cold sea spray for a chance to go
fishing or take a scenic cruise out to Te
Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve.
It’s great to see some events coming
up as well which, all going to plan, will
draw in the domestic crowds.
Winter is the common downtime for
many Mercury Bay residents. Quite a
few of our local tourist operators are
also taking advantage of the break to
relax and unwind as tourists themselves.
Come in and tell us about your travels,
hot tips and good and bad experiences.
We can all learn something to offer
visitors to The Coromandel a better
visitor experience.

Peninsula First XV the Coulter Cup champions
The Peninsula First XV rugby team won the 2014 Coulter Cup competition last Saturday in a nail-biting finish against Waihi College at the Paeroa Domain. The Coulter Cup is the premier secondary
schools competition of the Thames Valley Rugby Union.
The Peninsula boys scored two converted tries and a penalty goal in the first half against one unconverted try and two penalty goals from Waihi for a halftime score of 17-11. Waihi scored their
second unconverted try of the game five minutes into the second half to take the score to 17-16. This remained the score, much to the anguish of the many Peninsula supporters who made the
trip to Paeroa to support the team, until three minutes before the final whistle when the Peninsula team scored their third converted try for a fulltime score of 24-16.
The Peninsula team’s coach, Mike Smith said after the game he is immensely proud of the boys. It was the first year Mercury Bay Area School students combined forces with other students from
the northern part of the Coromandel. It meant students had to travel more than usual to train and had to work really hard to come together as a team early in the season. “The boys’ discipline
and commitment are an example for others,” Mr Smith said.
For the Peninsula team Zarric Auriom, Rayven Ngapo and Pukengia Moanaroa scored tries and Jayden Tegg kicked the conversions and penalty goal.
The Thames Valley Rugby Union Under 18 representative squad was announced immediately after the final, with Tyler Relph, Pukengia Moanaroa, JJ Parr, Ricky Cressey-Hamilton and Maui
Paurini-Hakaria from the Peninsula team making it into the squad.
Pictured are the Peninsula team menbers after they’ve received the Coulter Cup with coach Mike Smith (back left) and assistant coach and manager, Greg and Marie Relph (back right).
