FROM PRESIDENT
Distinguished Friends,
We are proud to celebrate the 110th anniversary of Or-Ahayim
(Light of Life). I would like to briefly mention various important
developments have taken place in our hospital since we have
taken over the management in the year 2005.
Construction of the new building in place of the old one that
was demolished, as Alegra Torel Geriatrics Pavilion in year 2005
was a milestone in the history of our hospital. Our hospital has
a Geriatrics clinic, which is one of the few in Turkey. The Geriatrics
clinic provides services to its “Guests”, with physicians who are
specialized in geriatric issues such as Alzheimer and dementia.
Physiotherapists, dieticians, psychotherapists, pharmacologists,
nurses and health teams as well as other health staff are ready
to intervene in all situations. A team of specialists is formed based
on the specific medical needs of the patients. Our geriatric patients
can stay in modern, elegant single or double rooms with baths
and enjoy the comfort.
Furthermore, 60 volunteer “Pink
Angels”, work to revive and instill
the joy of life in the patients and
provide the peace of mind, warmth
and care, like at their home. “Pink
Angels” taking courses such as
nursing and special geriatric patient
care, try to provide conscious
services to the elderly. They have
chat sessions on Mondays and
Fridays, whereas on other days
they have handcraft skill therapies.
They also sing with patients. As
such, they ensure that patients feel
more secure and avoid the
negative feeling of being in a
hospital and make them feel
attached to life.
The second important development is the entry of our Physical
Therapy and Rehabilitation Center into service, equipped with
modern medical devices, in mid 2006, at our old polyclinic building.
We are glad with the number of treatments achieved and customer
satisfaction obtained at our physical therapy and rehabilitation
center.
The year 2007 stands out as a year in which many innovations
were brought to life. Our hospital became a more preferred
hospital where patients received better service and were better
healed. The first development in the year 2007 was the opening
of our two fully equipped, 24-hour operational surgery rooms in
February. Following this, our third surgery room went into service
in December to meet the increasing demand. In addition, a 5-bed
capacity adult intensive care unit and a 4-incubator pediatric
intensive care unit went into service under management of
Specialist Dr. Suat Culhaoz. Especially the adult intensive care
unit has become an investment our patients benefit from amply,
and has satisfied their needs in the best possible manner.
The dental and implant clinic that went into service in April,
with Dr. Saul Cemal and Dr. Levent Canbolat joining our hospital,
provides treatment in all the branches of oral and dental health,
especially in aesthetic dentistry, surgical and prosthesis,
implantology, gum diseases, pediatric dentistry and orthodontistry.
The birth center, which gave us the joy of hearing the sounds
of newborns at our hospital, opened for service in May. Our new
birth center and our women health unit with its renewed technology
and its restructured staff with participation of Dr. Viktorya M.
Ezgin's, undertakes and finalizes all types of scanning, follow-up
and operative treatments with a more modern approach and
provides services at the highest standards.
Our urologist, Prof. Dr. Leon Saporta, performs treatments
with Green Light technology, which is performed in very few
hospitals in Turkey.
Lastly, at the start of 2008, we will continue to move further,
with our polyclinic services that
daily reach out to 300 patients, our
state-of-the-art technologyequipped three surgery rooms that
allow a daily average of 10
operations and most importantly,
our birth center that gives us the
opportunity to hear the sounds of
newborns.
Our hospital has agreements
with SGK (Social Insurance
Institute) and many private
insurance companies, and
provides services to many patients
that are under coverage of these
insurance companies.
hospital makes every effort
necessary to become an
exemplary health institution in the health sector with its professional
staff, volunteer “Pink Angels” and Management by achieving
and sustaining the services it provides at the highest international
standards.
Our first priority is to achieve success in the above areas and
resolve your health issues within our institution under optimal
conditions.
With your support and understanding, our hospital will continue
to serve our country for centuries to come.
With my best wishes for a healthy and peaceful life.
President
Jojo ‹llel
FROM CHIEF PYSICIAN
“They neither ask a patient his country of origin nor
his religion. This is what they say: Are you in pain? I will
help you.” PASTEUR
These meaningful words of Pasteur's, which hang on
the wall at the entrance to our building, exactly reflects
the opinion of our hospital. In the 1921 annual statement
of Or-Ahayim (Light of Life), which
kept its doors open to all patients in
need, without any regards to religion,
language, racial discrimination in the
days of World War 1, the following
is said 'The hospital was one of the
best health institutions of the Capital.
Without regards to any differences
of religion and race, without taking
into consideration their social status,
rich and poor patients with or without
fees were treated, against all the
hardships brought on by the
Wartime, the hospital sustained its
operations, and provided a 40-bed
pavilion to Red Crescent, which
undertook the treatment of soldiers
wounded while fighting for their
country.'
Balat Hospital, which performs the requirements of
modern medicine by using the latest innovations of
contemporary knowledge and technologies, stays bound
to professional ethical rules, gives priority to the
satisfaction of patients and patient's relatives , with the
awareness of its rights and social responsibilities: keeps
on providing guidance to the healthy generations of today
without giving any concession from its “ First Human”
understanding, with its 84-bed capacity, 3 surgery rooms,
neonatal and adult intensive care units, polyclinic that
provides services in 14 branches, emergency unit
operating on a 24-hour basis, physical therapy and
rehabilitation center, dental unit and implant center and
geriatric clinic.
Being a physician for us is made
up of knowledge, logic, intuition and
humanity. These add up to a good
physician, beneficial to humanity,
A physician without knowledge
cannot even be considered. Logic is
the helper of knowledge, whatever
the circumstances are, physicians
trust their logic. Experienced
specialist physicians, achieve
progress in their profession under
the light of information they filter
through logic and intuition. The
essence of being a physician is to
help those who are suffering. All
members of specialist staff of Balat
Hospital act in accordance with these principles. We are
all working for humanity, for our country, for a divine
cause for 110 years, and we step forward on the
developments we achieved in the past into the coming
centuries with trust and love and keeping our mission in
mind.
Chief Physician
Operator Dr. Tunç Çelebi
HISTORY
The story of Balat Or-Ahayim Hospital, which has
continued its existence in the history extending from the
Ottomans to the Republic, is a story of solidarity and
sacrifice started in the final years of the 19th century by
a few philanthropists, with their efforts to provide patients
in need with medical help in a home clinic, and it continues
to our day…
Or-Ahayim , meaning, “Light of Life”, was founded as a
small home clinic with the contributions of idealist
physicians and philanthropists, with the mandate of
Sultan Abdulhamid II.
Dr. Captain Rafael Dalmediko, the head of founders, came
up with the idea. Dr. Avramino dö Kastro, Abraham
Gerson, Admiral Dr. ‹zak Molho Pasha, Jakob Habib,
Jozef Halfon, Robert Levi, Yuda Levi Kebapç›o¤lu, Samuel
Rizo, Elia Suhami, Rafael Levi, Dr. ‹zidor Grayver Pasha,
and Dr. Eliyas Kohen Pasha were among the other
founding members.
One of the physicians, who had an important role in the
hospital, was Ataturk's physician Dr. Samuel Abravaya
Marmarali. Marmarali had given courses for 25 years at
Haydarpasa Medical Faculty, where he had graduated
from, and conducted the Health membership of the SubAssembly, which he was assigned to after the declaration
of the 2nd Constitutional Monarchy for a period of 15
years. He was elected as an independent Member of
Parliament from Nigde at the 4th and 5th periods of the
Turkish Grand National Assembly and served Or-Ahayim
hospital for 40 years.
The foundation of Or-Ahayim Hospital was made possible
with the collection of 11,000 gold coins from various
activities such as donations by thrift boxes distributed
to houses, donations from abroad, balls, plays, badge
sales in streets. The construction of the hospital, which
bears the signature of Architect Gabriel Tedechi, was
completed in two years.
Or-Ahayim witnessed World War II, the Balkan War, the
Occupation of Istanbul and various migrations. In 1914,
during World War I, the first 30 beds of the hospital,
followed by the 40-bed quarantine pavilion were reserved
under the Red Crescent for the treatment of wounded
soldiers. Hospital staff was awarded with the Medal of
Honor by the Red Crescent for their extraordinary efforts.
The hospital hosted migrants arriving from Russia in
1921 and those arriving from Poland in 1934.
The second milestone in the history of Or-Ahayim Hospital
was witnessed in the 1920s. At the time, a businessman
from Baghdad, Sir Ellie Kadoorie comes into play and
makes a substantial donation to the hospital. With this
donation, 3 large buildings were constructed on the
hospital land and the appearance of Or-Ahayim changes
completely hereon. The now-standing modern hospital
started as of that date. Two of the buildings constructed
with Sir Kadoorie's donation are still being used.
The third building was demolished in 2004 for the new
building to be constructed in its place. A recent milestone
in the history of the hospital, would be the construction
of the new building in place of that demolished in 2004,
and its entry into service as “Alegra Torel Geriatrics
Pavilion”. This section, which has 26 rooms, 42 beds, a
polyclinic, an emergency section, and modern diagnosis
center, is equipped with medical devices that are of stateof-the-art technology.
Mission
In summary, the donations collected through time,
including the bread and meat donations of Abdulhamid
II, all steps taken with the great faith felt for serving
humanity and great love felt for mankind have been put
to utmost use, and all efforts have been carefully invested
to reach today.
To adopt ethical principles of science in all medical
implementations.
To be part of Or-Ahayim is to continue a tradition, a ritual.
It means to see the future, and to become the nameless
heroes of the generations that will follow.
Balat Or-Ahayim Hospital, in line with its mission,
embraces everybody that needs medical service.
To always serve for the benefit of humanity in accordance
with our 110 years of tradition, being loyal to our “Human
First” understanding by being respectful to patient rights,
by not giving any concessions from professional ethics,
by giving priority to the satisfaction of patient rights and
their relatives, by being aware of our social
responsibilities, and acting without any discrimination
of language, religion, race and gender.
Vision
To provide treatment opportunities to patients in an
economic manner, with fast and correct diagnosis of its
specialist staff, contemporary management system and
use of advanced technology. To provide maximum level
of patient satisfaction and satisfaction of their relatives.
To provide and sustain service quality that adopts
international standards, to become an exemplary health
institution in the health sector with these attributes.
To continue sustaining our feature of being a general
hospital by closely following the latest developments in
technology.

HAND & MICRO SURGERY CENTER
Thanks to microsurgery that has been rapidly developing
especially in recent years, tissues or organs that are absent
at birth or become missing due to tumor or trauma have
stopped being a nightmare. Tissue or organ losses due
to birth abnormalities, traffic accidents, burns, traumas or
the removal of malignant tissues by surgery can be restored
with free tissue transplantation. For patients who lose
their facial areas such as jaw or nose as a result of cancer
or trauma, jaws can be restructured from bones of the
leg, or a nose can be formed by using forearm skin,
cartilage and bones. Furthermore, new breasts can be
restructured for women whose breasts are amputated due
to cancer by using their own tissue. Children who miss
fingers at birth or those who lose fingers due to
occupational accidents feel relieved as their toes can be
transplanted to their hands. This way they can have
functional fingers.
o Hand Injuries (hand-finger ruptures, tendon, nerve
and vein cuts, etc.)

GERIATRICS
Although old age fluctuates from culture to culture
according to mental, cultural and social features, usually
age 65 is taken as the start of geriatric term in many
countries. While chronic diseases and functional losses
related to these are generally experienced in this age group,
some individuals are able to stay extremely healthy. The
purpose in geriatrics is to protect the healthy status and
functioning of the patient.
When approaching the elderly, not only clinic, but also
psychological, socio-economic, environmental and family
evaluations become important as well. To achieve this,
medical doctors, nurses, social services specialists,
physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians,
psychotherapists and pharmacologists need to work in
cooperation. Our hospital, surrounded by the blue and
green colors of the Golden Horn is renown for patient care
and rehabilitation as well as with the sensitive humanitarian
approach it shows, and besides its function as a general
hospital, has a Geriatrics clinic, one of the few in Turkey.
Our principle is to stay loyal to “Human First” understanding
and to maintain this continuously.
In a survey carried out by Dunya Newspaper, Balat Hospital,
which made the biggest leap and investment in the year
2005, earned the right to enter amongst the hospitals of
the year, with the new 4-storey, 42-bed geriatrics building
with 26 rooms and two therapy halls which it opened under
the name “Alegra Torel Geriatrics Pavilion”.
The 110-year Balat Hospital Geriatrics clinic, with its
matchless Golden Horn view, with Koc Museum situated
right across it and with its garden covered with colorful
flowers and grass that resemble the dream holiday resorts,
accepts Alzheimer and geriatric patients who do not have
serious psychiatric disorders.
Its extensive nurse and specialist staff team, lovingly
undertake the care and rehabilitation works of patients on
a 24-hour basis. Geriatrics clinic serves its “guests” with
specialist physicians, who are specialists in old-age issues
such as Alzheimer and dementia, whereas physiotherapists,
dieticians, psychotherapists, pharmacologists, nurses, and
health team and other health staff are ready to intervene
in difficult situations. All or some of the specialist staff are
assigned to the therapy team of the elderly patients
according their needs.
Our elderly are under the intense assurance of a general
hospital and the love and respect felt for them. The essential
thing for us is to reach out to these patients and to have
their relatives enjoy a sound sleep with assurance.
THERAPIES
Therapy and rehabilitation time, which is managed by the
Pink Angels on a daily basis between the hours of 11:00
and 12:00, are the hours our elderly are the happiest
throughout the day. During these hours our elderly
comment together on the news appearing in daily
newspapers, exchange opinions related to current events,
perform and listen to music, sings and develop various
handcraft skills.
A group coming from Joint, after observing our geriatric
patients in 1993, directed Occupational Therapist Frieda
Shaan to our hospital in 1994. The purpose was to make
the permanent geriatric patients more lively, to draw them
away from distresses such as old age and sickness and to
show them the beautiful things they can do. This is how
the first core therapy group under the guidance of Frieda
Shaan, consisting of Janet Sezer, Kolomba Kasuto, Tuna
Apalaçi, Eti Zavaro, Coya Sabaner, Blanfl Haser and Alegre
Kalvo started handcrafts by assembling together once a
week in the winter season of 1994-1995. The first session
held with patients in June of 1995 was successful and
encouraged everyone. Upon assignment of Psychiatrist
Dr. Selim Basarir to our hospital in the season of 1995-96,
Leyla Devides realized her chat therapy dream. This is how
our patients participated in two days of therapy, one day
of chat and one day of handcraft skills. Life became more
enjoyable, livelier.
A chat you carry out with a friend, or knitting, a painting
that you design together takes you away from your existing
stress and allows you to feel better. So does therapy.
Today, we are confidently progressing along the path that
was opened for us at the time. We apply therapies such
as chats or handcraft skills that last for an hour for 6 days
of the week. Sometimes, we end up having valuable guests.
These guests take up and elaborate on a good topic, if it
is a special day such as a holiday, they recount the meaning
and importance of that day, play music or act out a sketch.
Sometimes, the children chorus of Ulus Jewish School
takes the excitement of life to its utmost point. We also
celebrate the birthdays of our patients. Consequently, our
permanently residing patients feel better in a different
environment, and also by presenting their valued opinions,
and by generating art and craft items pass peaceful,
productive and happy time.
PINK ANGELS
The 60-person volunteer army named as “Pink Angels”,
work to have our patients stay committed to life, to
instill joy of life in them and let them experience the
peace, warmth and tenderness of home. Pink Angels,
taking courses such as nursing and special elderlypatient-care courses, try to provide high-level service
and perform their volunteer work as if they were
professionals. The work of “Pink Angels”, who were
following all the needs of patients on a one-on-one
basis from patient bathing to the preparation of dining
hall, was more difficult. Nowadays, with the
development achieved in the hospital, since such
personal needs of patients are assumed by nurses,
the aim of “Pink Angels” as volunteer ladies is to make
the elderly guests as happy as possible. The “Pink
Angels” of Balat Or-Ahayim hospital undertake
extremely important tasks from visiting patients to
ensuring the interest of their relatives for moral support.
They keep the contact of patients with the world alive
with their regular visits, the therapy works they arrange,
and the chat sessions they organize. In summary, they
give the joy of life to patients. Besides the dedicated
efforts of “Pink Angels”, their continuing work is worth
mentioning. They reserve at least one full day in a
week to the hospital. Most of them do not stay limited
to this one day. They dedicate all of their free time to
the hospital. There are those who have been working
on a voluntary basis for more than 30 years. To sustain
an activity for decades without any breaks is true
dedication. What distinguishes Balat Or-Ahayim
hospital from other hospitals, besides the health service,
is this sacred service “Pink Angel” group gives
voluntarily and with dedication.
The principles of “Pink Angels” include: to regularly
allocate time to their activities, to generate quality
work, to develop themselves continuously by having
training, not to define their activities as self-sacrifice
or as inclination but to sustain and complete the tasks
they undertake with high quality, and to stay loyal to
the “Pink Angel” philosophy.
Award to Pink Angels
Pink Angels, volunteer workers of 110-year old Balat Or-Ahayim hospital were found worthy of the “Congratulatory
Letter in the Behavioral Branch” by Fair Play Commission of National Olympics Committee. The Turkish National
Olympics Committee, which awarded the humanitarian efforts of Pink Angels that have been ongoing for centuries
by this action, has also elevated the philosophy of volunteerism. At the ceremony held at the Olympic Home,
Erdogan Aripinar, President of Fair Play Council of the Turkish Olympic Committee, highlighted the fact that the
land we live in has grown stronger as the meeting place of different religions and nations throughout the history
extending from the Ottomans to the Republic and presented the Fair Play Award of National Olympic Committee
to Elia Penso, the term president of Balat Or-Ahayim Hospital Foundation and Sara Ovadya, the term president
of Pink Angels, the volunteers army. Balat Or-Ahayim Hospital, which came to life with the idea of treating people
in need and for which construction was started in 1898, has been an address where “volunteering” has been
continuously brought to life, just as was the case at its foundation. The Women Committee first, and then later
volunteer organization that took the name Pink Angels Committee in 1976, are examples that are rare to come
across.
