Murphy •• Past President message from dmsf Dear Friends, Although our Scholars are in school for nine months of the year, the work of the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund is on-going year-round. Whether it is raising funds, running programs, recruiting new students or helping current Scholars be successful, we are proud to show you a seasonal review of DMSF in action in the 2012 annual report pages that follow. Throughout spring, summer, fall and winter our Scholars inspire volunteers, donors and staff to create and fund the best chance for success in a demanding college preparatory environment with educational and support programming. Thank you for your commitment to the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund. We hope we can count on you this year as well. Best regards, David Shaw scholars in service DMSF Scholars know the importance of giving back. Each Scholar is receiving a college prep high school education because of generous supporters who do just that. To pay it forward, all DMSF Scholars volunteer to make a difference for communities in need. In addition to serving individually, last spring 100% of our DMSF day school Scholars came together to participate in a community service day. Scholars gave back to local communities by assembling food boxes at local food pantries, removing litter from neighborhood parks, sorting donations at a clothing drive, and fundraising for people with disabilities. dmsf through the seasons | Spring affinity program With 327 Scholars spread across 63 partnership schools, DMSF finds creative ways to foster fellowship among Scholars through volunteering, special events, and the DMSF Affinity Program. The DMSF Affinity Program enables Scholars to meet and overcome challenges so they are successful in high school, college and beyond. The program has grown to three affinity groups, each consisting of 10 to 15 Scholars. Each affinity group is led by a DMSF alumnus or an individual who has had similar experiences. The groups meet twice a month on Saturdays. At these meetings, Scholars discuss constructive ways to manage social pressures, build friendships, and have fun. Affinity groups have been a resounding success. More than three-quarters of the Scholars who have participated in an affinity group for at least a year have improved their GPAs. d m s f t h ro u g h t h e s e a s o n s | Spring college counseling DMSF is proud to announce that 100% of the graduating seniors in the Class of 2012 were accepted into college. Not only were they accepted into excellent schools, they received generous financial aid packages and several were awarded fullride scholarships including 12 Chick Evans Scholarships, three Posse scholarships and two Gates Millennium scholarships. Every year, DMSF Scholars collectively receive millions of dollars in college scholarships, and this year was one of the best yet. Each DMSF Scholar participates in a comprehensive fouryear college counseling process, which includes opportunities to visit college campuses, meetings with admission representatives, test preparation and extensive one-on-one guidance. DMSF’s focus is not solely on helping Scholars gain admission into college, but also on helping them find a good fit and generous financial aid, providing them with the tools to succeed in college and beyond. the Class of 2012 colleges Agnes Scott College Moraine Valley Amherst College Northern Illinois University Babson College Northwestern University Bowdoin College Princeton University Calumet College of St. Joseph Quincy College Case Western Reserve Ripon College Concordia University School of the Art Institute of Chicago Cornell College St. Edward’s University Creighton University St. John’s College DePaul University St. John’s University DePauw University St. Louis University Elmhurst College St. Mary’s of Minnesota Georgetown University United States Navel Academy Grand Valley State University of Chicago Harold Washington City College University of Illinois Havorford College University of Illinois Chicago Indiana State University University of Iowa Kalamazoo College University of Miami Knox College University of San Francisco Lawrence University University of Southern California Loyola University University of Texas Marquette University Wartburg College Mercyhurst College Western Michigan University Middlebury College Williams College Monmouth College dmsf through the seasons | Spring welcome freshman awards ceremony On May 8, 2012 DMSF welcomed 105 members of the Class of 2016 at the annual awards ceremony. Over 350 guests looked on as DMSF’s newest Scholars received their award certificates at St. Ignatius College Prep. These Scholars represent 76 elementary schools from every corner of Chicago and will be attending 38 different DMSF Partnership high schools. The keynote speech was delivered by Francis Idehen of Exelon Corporation. Anyah, a DMSF Class of 2015 Scholar, offered her reflections on her freshman year at the Chicago Waldorf School. d m s f t h ro u g h t h e s e a s o n s | Spring golf classic For more than twenty years, DMSF’s golf classic continues to be Chicago’s premier charity golf event. Combining the enthusiasm and support of 358 golfers, 49 sponsors, 70 DMSF caddies, four country clubs, and a small army of volunteers, this year’s Golf Classic raised over $1.1 million dollars — the most successful event in DMSF history. As part of this program, Scholars work with teachers and professional speech pathologists in one-on-one and group settings to develop and improve their communication skills. Language Empowers All People or LEAP lasts for one week. A highlight to the training is the student debates wherein Scholars demonstrate their newly polished poise and verbal articulation skills. Led by Educational Endeavors, the second week-long session, the Ideal Student Workshop, focuses on study skills, time management, note-taking, and critical reading, thinking and writing. d m s f t h ro u g h t h e s e a s o n s | Summer caddie program A record 78 Scholars spent the summer caddying at 20 Chicagoland golf courses this year. As one of DMSF’s key summer opportunities, the Caddie Program allows Scholars to earn money and to experience supervised living away from home amongst their peers in college dormitories. Because caddies are selected based on their academic success and leadership abilities, they are prime candidates for the Chick Evans Scholarship—a full-ride college scholarship to a number of leading Midwest universities. To date, more than 180 DMSF Scholars have earned Evans scholarships. Golfers played as many as 36 holes on the links course and had the opportunity to learn about course design and plans for a 2nd Cabot course from Mike Keiser and Bill Coore. Thanks to the generosity of all who participated, the Cabot Links golf retreat netted $85,000 in donations to fund scholarship. dmsf through the seasons | Fall “You provided me with the opportunity of a lifetime. Thank you so much for your continuous support and dedication to DMSF. Before, my dreams seemed impossible to accomplish, but now, I am accomplishing my dreams, one-by-one because of your help.” Lesya | 2015 | Fenwick High School “Your contributions and support also encourage me to do my best in school because it helps me realize that I just don’t have my family, I also have Daniel Murphy who wants me to succeed in life too. Therefore, I’m going work hard and be positive and do what I need to do to succeed in life because I received an opportunity from the magnificent Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund.” “I have learned quickly that nothing is simply handed to you. You have to work hard for what you want and really deserve it. This is why I plan to exceed my own expectations and work really hard towards getting better in biology so that my future career as being a pediatrician will be successful.” Jamia | 2016| Mother McAuley Sheldon | 2015 | DeLaSalle Institute giving thanks d m s f t h ro u g h t h e s e a s o n s | Fall alumni in action The moment our Scholars walk across their high school graduation stages, they become DMSF Alumni. Since 1994 over 1250 DMSF Scholars have graduated from our partnership schools knowing that receiving a scholarship made all the difference. Many have graduated from college and are pursuing a vast array of graduate programs and careers and now make up a vibrant network of successful men and women committed to this organization and the next generation of Scholars. Members of the DMSF Alumni Network host the annual Holiday Reunion, serve as ambassadors at the Award Ceremony, Donor Receptions and Golf Classic, become mentors to current Scholars and participate in the interviews of prospective Scholars. Additionally, a growing number of alumni are contributing financially showing their commitment to the future of the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund. dmsf through the seasons | Winter mentoring Each DMSF Scholar who requests a mentor is matched with an adult who serves as a role model with a special interest in the Scholar’s academic success and personal growth. In 2012, DMSF facilitated mentor relationships for more than 70 Scholars. Mentors and mentees communicate regularly, and DMSF also hosts several events throughout the school year at which mentors and their Scholars meet in a social setting. DMSF played host to five Mentor-Scholar events in 2012, including bowling, ice skating, and various sporting events. d m s f t h ro u g h t h e s e a s o n s | Winter statement of financial position Temporarily Restricted Total $1,131,065 $100,000 $1,231,065 $507,592 $4,500 $512,092 Unrestricted Endowment Caddie Program $58,284 $13,285 $13,285 Fundraising Events, net $776,814 $776,814 Gain on investments held and sold $167,690 $202,629 $370,319 Interest $34,961 $2 $34,963 Dividends $65,408 $15,083 $80,491 ($32,393) ($11,192) ($43,585) $416,866 ($416,866) $3,139,572 ($105,844) Contributed Goods and Services Investment fees and expenses Net assets released from restrictions: Satisfaction of purpose or time restrictions TOTAL REVENUE $3,033,728 Expenses: Program Services $160,968 Corporate stock $3,006,323 Corporate bonds $359,634 U.S. Government and Government Agency obligations $58,284 $910,415 Investments: Mutual Funds Grants & Contributions: Scholarship and education Cash and cash equivalents Investment Cash and money market funds August 31, 2012 Revenue aSSETS Total Investments $1,786,776 $415,170 $5,728,871 Receivables: Accrued investment income $6,784 Accounts Receivable Contributions receivable, net: Scholarship $179,672 Endowment $327,600 Total receivables: $514,056 Prepaid Expenses $62,641 Security Deposit $16,482 Property and equipment, net $16,300 Total assets $7,248,765 Liabilities and Net Assets $2,158,375 $2,158,375 Supporting Services: Liabilities: Accounts payable and accrued expenses $76,686 Management and General $140,670 $140,670 Accrued tuition and travel costs Fundraising $357,924 $357,924 Deferred Revenue $83,700 $2,656,969 $2,656,969 Deferred Rent $45,756 Total Expenses Change in net assets $482,603 ($105,844) $376,759 Net assets: Total liabilities $1,313,400 $1,519,542 Net Assets: Beginning of year $2,952,297 $2,400,167 $5,352,464 Unrestricted $3,434,900 End of Year $3,434,900 $2,294,323 $5,729,223 Temporarily restricted $2,294,323 Total net assets $5,729,223 Total liabilities and net assets $7,248,765 our generous donors $100,000 and up Invest for Kids Michael L. and Rosalind C.
