CENTRAL SPEAKS May 5, 2016 • Daily News at CentralSpeaks.com chs baseball & football on Sports Central Radio Show tonight, 5-6PM at coaches grill & on 91.9FM Central Cares Greenwell Springs Youth Riders 58th Annual Rodeo Last Saturday twenty-five Central residents participated in what has become the first monthly community service workday of “Central Cares.” The service project was pulled together in just a few days through word-of-mouth and social media. The group arrived at the home of an elderly Central widow to clean up her small rural farm property and avoid additional fines and fees levied by the City of Central for ordinance violations. The group finished working at noon and the day was a HUGE success. A 30 yard rollback dumpster provided by Dennis Stewart Trucking is full. Acres of property are bush hogged and cleared. The property around the home is significantly cleaned up. Four old cars hauled off. Fallen trees and limbs were cut and added to two huge brush burn-piles. In short, the people of Central, as they always do, came together to care for a neighbor. At the end of the day she asked Central Speaks to extend her heartfelt thanks to all who participated, and added, "I have been blessed today.” This was too good not to repeat. So, if you know of a neighbor with a need, such as cleanup, painting, home repair, building a wheelchair ramp, etc., contact Dave Freneaux at 413-1616 or Dave@ CentralSpeaks.com. Next month “Central Cares” will try to go solve a few problems, fix some things, paint some things, or clean up some things, for someone who needs a hand. Like the Facebook page “Central Cares” to get involved in the next project in late May. The group will be lining up other service projects and spending one Saturday morning each month from 8-Noon in service to one or more Central neighbors. Mark your calendars for the Central St. Jude BikeA-Thon! The annual fundraiser will be held again at Magnolia Square on Saturday, May 14. Riders should arrive no later than 8:30 a.m., and the event begins at 9. The fundraiser benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, so start gathering your pledges now! The Greenwell Springs Youth Riders will perform in their 58th Annual Rodeo, one of the longest running rodeos in the state of Louisiana, on May 6 and 7 at the BREC Shady Park Arena off of Greenwell Springs Road. Day of Prayer Observance Tonight Tonight, May 5, 2016, Central residents will gather at Cornerstone Fellowship Church from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. to observe the 65th Annual National Day of Prayer. This will be the 12th annual observance in Central. Everyone is invited to attend and join in prayer for our churches, our businesses, our schools, our families, and our government. Pastors and leaders of our community will be in attendance! This observance event is sponsored by Central Area Pastors Association MAKING A DIFFERENCE ... in your busy day with Convenience Services! Central Mayor Jr. Shelton has signed a proclamation designating this day as a Day of Prayer in Central. Observances will also be held in Washington D. C., and all over the nation, as we declare our dependence on our Creator and the Almighty God in Heaven. For more information on the national observance, visit www. nationaldayofprayer.org Zoar Baptist Men’s Ministry is hosting their 14th annual car show this Saturday, May 7. Judging starts at 10 a.m., so come by to see some beautiful cars and enjoy a day of fun! 2 CITY Unfinished Business More Public Records Found In January, City of Central attorneys told Judge Don Johnson that Mayor Shelton’s administration had turned over all public records that had been requested. Last Friday the City of Central released 394 pages of public records that were requested on…… November 9, 2015. When I picked up the records on Friday I was told that there are more to come. On May 16th the Public Records hearings will continue when Judge Johnson rules on a motion to compel the City to release the list of documents Mayor Shelton’s administration claims are exempt from Public Records Requests. “We Are Going To Make This City Grow” – Mayor Shelton I attended Tuesday’s meeting of the newly-formed Economic Development committee and heard Mayor Shelton’s vision for the City of Central loud and clear. He emphatically told those at the meeting, “I believe this committee is committed to do it. This administration is committed to do it. The Council is committed to do it, and we will not be deterred. We are going to make this city grow, and that is not a bad word.” I have a very different opinion on growth of this 200-year-old, quiet, rural community. I don’t want anyone to “MAKE” Central grow… I want to “Let” Central grow. With good schools in a quiet and safe community, Central will certainly grow, but since our roads and schools are already having a hard time keeping up, let’s not get in too big of a hurry. TND Lawsuit The lawsuit filed by Central citizens challenging the number of apartments allowed in the Shoe Creek Development is headed for the First Circuit Court of Appeal. Dave Freneaux, Mike Mannino, and Mike Stephens contend that the city violated its own ordinances when the City Council approved 250 apartments to be built across the street from Walmart. It will likely be four to six months before a decision will be made by the Court of Appeal. Central Cares See the front page for this one, but I have to mention this community workday effort again. It was a great morning and we will be holding a workday one Saturday morning each month. It feels good to be in service for our neighbors. Like “Central Cares” on Facebook or contact me at 4131616 or Dave@CentralSpeaks. com to get involved. That would be Good News for a Great City. CONTACT Central SpeakS 13513 Hooper Road P.O. By invitation, the Youth Riders perform at rodeos, parades, and other equestrian events in Louisiana and throughout the South. This family oriented organization was established nearly 60 years ago as a Boy Scout troop. They soon allowed girls and became the Greenwell Springs Youth Riders. It has evolved into an outstanding group of youths between the ages of eight to eighteen. This non-profit group promotes horsemanship, teamwork, and a sense of value to hundreds of kids. The success and longevity of this team is contributed to the dedication of the parents, support of the community, and a child’s love of riding a horse. The annual Rodeo is the group’s only fundraiser. It provides equipment and tack for the members, as well as senior scholarships. Granted, from a “30,000 foot elevation” view point this is all probably true, however, locally I have reasonable higher expectations! Over the last several years I have had the privilege of judging Senior Projects at Central High. I have always completed the judging of these projects with a subtle sense that our community’s youth were learning some great skills and accomplishing some great projects. However, this year the process was changed from the judging of projects to doing Senior Exit Interviews. I have to admit, I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy this change in format. After all, in previous years some of the projects were impressive, interesting, informative and at times entertaining. How exciting could doing 20 interviews be? I have to tell you that it was a fantastic experience! The Senior Exit Interview process allowed us to ask the seniors a series of predetermined questions such as: describe a community outreach program in which they participated, how Central High prepared them for the future, what their short and long range goals were and other random questions we as interviewers presented to them. This process gave these seniors the opportunity to have practical experience going before complete strangers, handling themselves in a professional manner and dealing with random questions. By going through this process, I was able to help these youngsters utilize skills they had been developing in order to prepare them for future such experiences. Additionally, I was treated to a new and enjoyable experience in dealing with our local seniors and gained 2 wonderful insights. First, Central has always rallied behind the phrase, “A Community that Cares!” Our community’s ability to reach out to others in need has been our unifying and defining trait that makes Central a tremendous place to live. These seniors had to take part in an outreach project. Many of them described the impact that this had on them as they reached out to those less fortunate! By placing our seniors in such projects we are providing an opportunity for our community to continue to be a “Community that Cares” for years to come. Secondly, by doing this interview process we had an opportunity to not only gain insight into the achievements, plans and goals of these seniors but also into their character! I am here to tell you there is hope! Hopefully we can keep some of these talented, insightful and quality young people in our area for years to come. Whether they are entering college, trade school or the workforce, these seniors will do the Central community proud. Parents, teachers, community school system and churches congratulations on a job well done and Congratulations to the Seniors of 2016! CentralSpeaks.com Print Edition • Thursday, May 5, 2016 City of Central Food Bank News By Michelle Lewis – Food Bank President Greetings, Residents of the City of Central, The past few months have been amazing for the food bank. Since our grand opening on January 12, 2016, we have signed up thirty new clients. The food bank continues to receive food donations from the congregations of Zoar Baptist Church, Blackwater Methodist Church, First Baptist Church of Central and the customers at our Central Winn Dixie. To celebrate the 100th day of school, the elementary students of Central Private School had a food drive. The goal was for each of the elementary classes to raise 100 canned goods each. Well, those little ones donated 1,863 canned goods to the food bank. In February and March, Stacey Lancaster, owner of Lancaster House, dropped off huge boxes of oranges and grape fruit for our clients. I was contacted by a mother whose thirteen year old son Christian needed a project for his Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program. Needless to say I had the perfect project for him. The food bank needed two food donation boxes built. Not only is he building the boxes, but he also organized a food drive for our most needed items such as peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti sauce, boxed milk, and much, much more. Christian is challenging all of the other scouts to fill the containers with food. More to come on this exciting news! After having to postpone our meeting with Henry J. Schexnayder, III, Baton Rouge Market President, Whitney Bank, we finally were able to meet with him and Stephen David, also of Whitney Bank, on March 30th. Mr. Schexnayder presented the food bank with a donation of $600.00. You see, in January he told the Whitney Bank employees everything they raised he would match out of his own pocket. We also received a donation from Mr. David for $150.00. Also in the month of March, we met with Theresa Payment - Foundation Director, Lane Regional Medical Center. The City of Central Food Bank was chosen to be recipient of donations made by the staff of Lanes Hero program. They will also be holding a food drive for the food bank in the near future. Lemonade Day Rescheduled for This Saturday From Raising Canes The students of Central Intermediate School will be participating in Lemonade Day this year on May 7 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in the pavilion behind Raising Canes. Each class will be building their own business (lemonade stand) from start up to fully operational. They will be learning entrepreneurial skills as well as how to handle customers and give back to charity. 100% of proceeds raised will go back to the charity of each class’ choice. Use this opportunity to come and support the community, all the charities, and the kids of CIS. You will also have the opportunity to enter in to win free Raising Canes for a year! So come out, have a great time getting to see all of the creativity of each lemonade stand, and support a great cause! CAPA Corner Jean Vanier, a Christian leader who founded L'Arche communities around the world for persons with severe disabilities, tells a story about a 76-year-old woman named Francoise, also known as "Mamie." Francoise had serious mental and physical disabilities. She was blind, bedridden, and incontinent. She could not feed or dress herself. She was unable to communicate through words. And yet the entire staff of this L'Arche community followed the words of Scripture and showed Christlike love for Mamie. But showing unconditional love wasn't always easy. One of the staff assistants, a young man called Louis, was assigned to take care of Mamie. Louis was disappointed because he did not feel drawn to her. Faithfully, as he was asked, he fed Mamie, but he found it tiresome. Then one day, she placed her hand on his hand and smiled. It was, he said, a special meeting, a moment of transformation, a moment of grace. From that moment on, he loved being with her. What he had found tiresome and difficult became a blessing. Love had made all the difference. Then one day a woman came to visit the director of that same L'Arche community. As the visitor watched Mamie struggle through life—weak, blind, voiceless, powerless to feed or dress herself—she offhandedly asked the director, "What's the point of keeping Francoise alive?" The director looked at the visitor and said, "Well, madam, because I love her.” No love is greater than that of Jesus Christ for people. His love is greater than our unworthiness. His love is greater than our despair. His love is greater than our doubts. His love is greater than our sinfulness. Christ’s love for you is greater! Jeff Stanfill Covenant Church CITY 5 Finally, for the entire month of March, the students of Central Intermediate School collected baby items for the food bank. The baby items donated were diapers, formula, baby food, baby wipes, baby snacks and baby blankets. I also found out that April is Toothbrush and Toothpaste Month at CIS with all donations coming to the food bank. I cannot thank everyone enough for the donations that help our little food bank to continue to grow and assist so many in need in our community. I cannot express just how much the support of the residents of Central and the businesses of Central means to me. I also cannot say THANK YOU enough for all of the donations. Until next time, my God bless you and keep you. Greetings to the Central Private School Family and to the entire community. I cannot believe that the school year is about to come to an end. During the week of May 9, Seniors will be very busy! They will be sitting for their final exams and practicing for graduation. Baccalaureate will be held Sunday, May 15, @ 2:00 p.m. at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church, with Graduation occurring eight days later on Monday, May 23, @7:00 p.m. at the same location. I think it is fair to say that things will be busy during the month of May for our graduates. The Class of 2016 is particularly large as we expect fifty-three students to be awarded their diplomas at the ceremony. We have been especially fortunate to welcome to the CP family thirteen seniors to our class from Redemptorist Catholic School, which unexpectedly closed at the end of the 2014/15 year. A special thank you to those students and their parents for choosing CP to finish their high school program. I commend both the new Redemptorist students and the returning CP students for working so hard to make the transition this year a very smooth and successful one. Our fund raising efforts to install A/C in the large gym is progressing. At this point we have sold 28 memorial bricks. After purchasing the bricks, this effort will bring just over $2400 into our capital campaign. We need about $11,000 additional dollars to meet our goal of $70,000 of the 120K needed so installation can begin. If you have a senior about to graduate, please consider buying a memorial brick with your child’s name and graduating year on the brick as a lasting memory. A special thank you to the grandparents who have bought bricks to honor their grandchildren; what a wonderful gift! Remember your child or grandchild doesn’t have to be a senior for you to purchase a personalized brick for them. Also, if you are an alumnae of CP, consider a memorial brick with your own name on it! Please contact Mr. Jewett at [email protected] or call 225261-3341 if you can help the effort by buying a brick. Additionally, we are holding our second annual three-on-three basketball tournament this year to honor the memory of 2001 CP graduate Michael Fornea. Michael’s family has graciously suggested that all profits from the proceeds go toward the Air Conditioning Fund. This year’s tournament will be held on Friday evening May 13, and most of the day Saturday, May 14. Each team will consist of three players and a $65 entry fee will be charged. Last year this effort was successful, and we hope that once again this will help push us closer to our fundraising goal. Mr. Jewett is organizing this effort, and he can be reached for details at [email protected] or you may call 225-261-3341. In closing, let me wish everyone a great Memorial Day weekend. A general reminder that students’ last day of school will be Monday, May 23, when all elementary parties will take place and our teachers’ last day (no students) will be Tuesday, May 24. Finally, a note to all that at the April 28, 2016, board of education meeting the board approved the calendar and approved that school will begin for the 2016/17 year in August for teachers on Monday August 8 and 9 with our annual workshops. The first student attendance will be Wednesday, August 11, 2016. Please plan your summer vacation accordingly. Charles W. Central Physical Therapy recently built a brand new center for their business, so they allowed the Central Fire Department to use their old building for training exercises. CFD spent two days last week getting hands-on training, including practicing methods of extracting people from fires. Firefighters are pictured using different kinds of saws to break into the roof as an alternate way of entering a burning building. This was a great opportunity provided by Central Physical Therapy, as firefighters do not often get to practice these techniques on actual buildings outside of a life-threatening situation.
