Forgetting the Message
By Melody Lotfi, Senior Editor
Burning buildings, using threats, and disobeying the law. In what way do
these actions constitute as methods to express opposition? It seems that the
only way people can have a voice anymore is to display violent acts and unkind
words. Protesting has become a way for people to show their emotions toward
several social problems (people who would otherwise have no way in voicing
their views). Unfortunately, we no longer see protests as a way to peacefully
object governments, groups, or social problems. We are now witnessing an increased number of violent demonstrations that are causing the peaceful methods of protesting to slowly fade away.
The most recent and chaotic protests have occurred due to caricatures that
were printed in European newspapers. A Danish newspaper published the caricatures in order to express freedom of the press. They believed that the media
often hesitates when depicting Islam in a negative light for fear of being punished by fanatics. The media’s fear may have been for good reason. Outrage
erupted in the Muslim community, especially after the caricatures were reprinted in other European newspapers. Journalists believe that their freedom of
expression is being undermined due to fear of being penalized by the religious
community.
Since late January, protests against the caricatures have been seen from the
Middle East to North America. The anger in the Muslim world has delivered
violent protests, including the burning of effigies, flags, and Danish embassies.
By using their freedom of expression, these protestors are condemning others
who use their equivalent right. Not only do the protestors engage in tasteless
behavior to make a point, but extremists go as far as to use terrorist threats
against Denmark. Many journalists, tourists, and aid workers have needed to
evacuate several cities in the Middle East for fear of being victimized by protestors. Their fear is understandable because it was in early February that a fanatical group in Palestine abducted a German citizen from a hotel to show their
anger towards Europe.
The focal point for the violent string of protests comes from the lack of dialogue amongst everyone involved with the situation. Those who are responsible
for the caricatures are unable to defend themselves because they must hide in
fear of retaliation from fanatical groups. I believe there should be some remorse on behalf of those who published the cartoons. However, amid the violence, chaos, and threats from protestors, those who are affiliated with the
European newspapers are not given the proper chance to apologize for their
lack of judgment towards the religious community. The newspapers were
merely trying to make a point and they made it. Those who are offended by the
caricatures should listen to what the European countries have to say. It is unfortunate that in a world of progress and presumed democracy, people are still defending their right to freedom of expression.

Nova Scotia School Accreditation and Internal Review
In 2003-04, the HRSB Planning for Improvement Initiative started us on the road to data collection to assist in painting a picture of student
learning at C.P. Allen. Each year, we have amassed data from various sources: parent, student and staff surveys, focus groups, grades, attendance, discipline and more. These data have been analyzed by our PFI team to assist us in providing a framework for goals to support student
learning over the next four years. This year, we have benefited from the work that has been done through PFI by engaging in the Nova Scotia
School Accreditation process to finalize the writing of an internal review report for the Department of Education. When this report is finalized, sections of it will be linked to the front page of our web-site under the menu selection “Planning for Improvement.”
Cafeteria Purchases and Debit Cards
Parents and students are reminded that debit cards are accepted in the school cafeteria for food and beverage purchases. We are interested in
hearing from you if you would like to have the option of a pre-pay student cafeteria card that can be used for purchases also.
Balanced choice
Have a look at the new Balanced Choice menu options in the cafeteria which satisfy Healthy Eating guidelines. These items are characterized by an emblem of a blue stick figure.
Academic Recognition Evening and Mengie- Shulman Awards
In the near future, students will receive invitations to an evening for academic recognition March 8. All are invited to attend an ice cream
social that evening after the presentations as well.
Quebec Trip- not school sanctioned
Every year around this time, we receive calls from parents about a March Break trip to Quebec. Please note, that this trip is not sanctioned
by the school or the HRSB and we encourage parents to inquire further about the details surrounding the trip.
Fundscrip Fund-raising Initiative
CPA is working with a new Canadian fundraising program that involves very little effort, can be long-term and has the potential to bring in
funds needed for the school. The name of the program is Fundscrip and the web link is www.fundscrip.com Other schools have joined and
here is what a member had to say about the program:

“I did a survey to get feedback on how the parents like the Fundscrip program at our school, and these are the comments.
·
This program makes sense!
·
We are already shopping at Fundscrip retailers- why not make money from this!
Word of mouth has spread quickly making it easy to get parent participation. Our school has already raised thousands through
Fundscrip and without any product sales.
How does it work. As a parent you would sign up for FREE on the website www.fundscrip.com . Once signed up you could then start ordering from retailers such as Superstores, Canadian Tire, Esso, IGA and Sobeys (just to name a few, there are over 80 retailers to choose
from).
FundScrip’s overwhelming success is attributable to three main reasons:
·
Absolutely no added costs, parents earn rebates that average 5% on purchases they already make in retail stores mentioned above.
·
For schools that opt for profit sharing Parents are further motivated by earning cash back to pay for their children’s activities.
·
It’s really easy for schools and volunteers to run – even if you are already running an existing fundraiser!
For more information, see www.fundscrip.com . Our school liaison is Shirley Picknell at [email protected]
African Heritage Month
February is African Heritage Month and we have an enthusiastic group of planners working on our celebration assembly scheduled for February 23. Students will present and perform and special speaker, Lennett Anderson will be delivering the keynote. Other events this month
include an outing to the Black Cultural Center in Westphal.
Literacy Initiative with Checkmates
Last year, our school was successful in acquiring a $10,000.00 grant to support our literacy initiative to support student success in writing
skills. The resource we have acquired is the Checkmates writing quick reference guide. For parents who are interested in following up on the
contents of this manual, we will have copies available for your perusal at the next Parent-Teacher evening, or please feel free to drop in and
ask about it. E-mail contact for our Increasing Student Success initiative is Ms. Lisa Cook at ([email protected]).

Co-President’s Message
Drinking happens at many of our school dances by some people who think that they can get away with it. As many of you may
already know, I was caught at the Halloween dance, back in October. I received a five-day suspension and my position as Charles P.
Allen’s co-president was revoked.
I plan on using this opportunity to inform you of my misjudgment and I look forward to becoming co-president again. All of this
could have been averted by not being stupid and coming to school
with liquor. It’s not worth the trouble you get yourself in and it’s
not worth the risk!
I would like to take this opportunity to again apologize to all
staff and students for my actions as they were obviously wrong and
they undermined the code of conduct here at Charles P. Allen.
Regardless of who you are and what you think you can do, it is
wrong to drink at any school function. Underage drinking is a serious and dangerous thing. Doing it in a school environment is not
only strictly forbidden but it’s not worth the risk. Trust me, getting
caught drinking at school is not fun and not what anyone wants.
The only way to make sure you don’t get caught is not to do it in
the first place. We all know that underage drinking happens all the
time but it just shouldn’t happen at school. Use your head and stay
out of trouble.

Kids Help Phone
A way to make a difference
By Keighlen Richards
Entering Grade 12, I have the same pressures as any other
student; assignments, approaching university deadlines, and
part-time work. Most people say that with all of this they have
no time to get involved in their school and community; I’m
here to tell you that you’re wrong, you can make time for anything. Kids Help Phone is one of those activities that not only
enriches the lives of those you are helping, but also enriches
you. Sharing with younger students and peers that there is a
place you can go to with stresses and problems is important,
because we all know times when we are desperate for someone to listen. This year, we are looking for grade 10 and 11
students to continue the work that we have done in our community. If you are interested, listen to the announcements and
attend our next meeting.
CPA Hockey Captains
By Lisa Senger and Jasmin Garlik
Girls Hockey Team:
Name: Kaelah Friesen
Grade: 12
Captain and she is playing her third year
Position: Center, key player
Other teams: Halifax Hawks
Boys Hockey Team:
Name: Danny Rutkauskas
Grade: 12
This amazing hockey season is Danny’s third and last
season for the Cheetah’s Hockey team. He is the team captain
and he was also selected to play for the Metro All Star team.
Danny is playing the center position, first line, and is one of
the Cheetah’s key players. He is an excellent team player because he is willing to set up instead of scoring for himself.
However, Danny is the leading scorer and well respected by
both teammates and opponents. His playing is competitive but
not too aggressive, which is why he received only 2 penalties
during the whole season; an amazing result.
Other sports he is interested in are badminton and
golf. Danny is not only an excellent hockey player but also a
high honours student in French Immersion. He is well liked, a
good role model, and has a great personality.
We are sad to lose one of our best hockey players and
a great student. However, we hope he is going to enjoy his
stay at St. FX University for business administration. Thank
you very much and good luck.

30-Hour Famine
By Kelilah Hughes
Assuming it takes you two minutes to read this article,
by the time you have finished, forty children under the age of five
will have died from hunger and hunger related diseases.
World hunger is a huge problem, but luckily the solution
to it is not. It takes $30 dollars a month to feed a child. $360 will
feed a child for a year. North America spends roughly $100 billion US on fast food every year.
What can you do to help? Take part in the 30-Hour Famine. This year, CPA wants to raise five thousand dollars to help
supply children in countries like Ghana, Sri Lanka, Niger, Malawi and Senegal with nutritious food and clean water. Proceeds
will also go towards innovative programs in Africa, Asia and
Latin America which work to help stop the spread of HIV and
AIDS by providing treatments and education programs.
With your help we can make a difference. The famine
will be held on April 7th and 8th here at CPA. Everyone is welcome to participate. Just let one of the committee members know
you're interested or listen to the announcements for the date and
time of a meeting.
If you're still not convinced, here are some hard facts
about hunger in our world:
-
Number of people who suffer from chronic malnutrition: 800
million (more then 24 times the population of Canada.)
The number of people in the world who die each year of water-related diseases: five million
Average distance African and Asian women walk every day
to collect water: six kilometers.
Portion of the world's population that doesn’t have access to
clean water: one billion.
With your help we can make a difference. The famine will be
held on April 7th and 8th here at CPA. Everyone is welcome to
participate. Just let one of the committee members know you're
interested or listen to the announcements for the date and time of
a meeting. Hunger Bites. Bite Back. Do the Famine! This year’s
committee includes Kelilah Hughes, Kristie Forbes, Molly Barkouse and Aly Thompson. If you need any more information you
can email Kelilah at [email protected]

Fiddler on the Roof
By Lisa Senger and Jasmin Garlik
Attention Cheetahs, it is coming! The musical of the year; Fiddler on the Roof!
What is Fiddler on the Roof? It is one of the most beloved stage musicals of
the 20th century. For all who still do not know what the musical is about, a
short storyline:
Fiddler on the Roof takes place around 1910 in a small Ukrainian
village. It is an uncertain time. Unrest grips the country - unrest caused
by the Pogroms (when Jews were driven en masse from their homes),
rising anti-Tsarist sentiment (which would lead to the Revolution), and
the approach of World War One. The historical realities of the time do
not simply provide a colorful backdrop to this story; they are central to
all that transpires. A central theme is how the old traditions are disintegrating under the pressure of a world culture that is being re-shaped by
industrialization and mechanization
One of those traditions is the means by which Jews have been married: a matchmaker chooses a wife for a man, the girl's father approves
the match, and the ceremony is held. That's how Tevye and his wife,
Golde, were united, and that's how the hard-working milkman believes
his five daughters should find their husbands. But Tzeitel has other, modern ideas. She spurns Tevye's selection for her, the wealthy Lazar Wolf.
Instead, she chooses her childhood sweetheart, the poor tailor, Motel.
Reluctantly, Tevye eventually assents to her choice, but, in doing so, he
acknowledges the freedom of all his children. Subsequently, his second
daughter, Hodel, decides to marry a young revolutionary, Perchik. Also,
Tzeitel and Hodel's younger sister, Chava falls in love with a non-Jew by
the name of Fyedka. This is one match that Tevye cannot countenance
and he warns of dire consequences if Chava goes through with the marriage.
The whole cast and the pit band are really working hard to practice their parts.
The cast is having rehearsals almost every day after school and the pit band is
practicing twice a week before and after school. The crew is still looking for
parents who would be interested in helping in the following areas: Publicity,
Set-construction, Cast Party at the school on April 1st, and donations for food
and assistance. If you are willing to give us a hand please call 832-8964, or email: [email protected] or [email protected]
The musical is going to be amazing; therefore, Cheetahs show your support and go to the musical.

Classroom Authority
By Danielle Delano
There are two types of people within the four walls of the classroom, the over -powering and out-numbering students and the
ringleader teacher who takes control. Lately, I’ve been noticing within my classes that the teachers are no longer in control. Instead, overbearing, interruptive, and problematic students have now taken the on the role as the power-house center of the class.
As a student who normally enjoys attending, learning and embracing my time in the classroom, I now find that the lessons I am
learning are based around the attention span of the students who need to be controlled. Is it fair that my fellow students and I have
to be ignored, un-challenged and angry in order to keep order in the classroom? I think NOT! Many courses are dubbed as “filler”,
“joke” or “burner” by disruptive students. They perceive these classes to be an easy pass with no work required. Theses classes
are over-filled by students who do not care, are looking for a quick pass and have no respect for the other students or the teacher.
After talking to several teachers, I’ve noticed a number of problems, possible solutions and many things that fall under the radar.
The problem students to whom I refer are easily identified in any classroom. They yell out, swear, and utter cruel and ignorant
names and comments to others. They throw erasers, pencils, pens, paper, and spitballs. When they are not boasting about things
like drug usage, drinking, and sex, they sit there playing their PSP, I-Pods and other loud and distracting technical gadgets and
take away from the learning experience of myself and other students. Last semester, I was laughed at and called names by these
trouble-makers when I participated in a class activity. I had things thrown at me and unwanted items placed in my knapsack and
coat. Yet when I voiced my concerns to the teacher…NOTHING!!! They either didn’t see anything or I was told to ‘ignore it’ or
go to the office and report the incident. The teachers either have no control over these problems or they just don’t want to do anything about them. I should not be victimized because I like to participate in my classes and school. So many of the students who
instigate these issue are regularly in trouble and have poor grades. Being reported to the office is not going to stop them, so what
can be done?
I’ve asked a few teachers to whom I’ve shared by concerns and worries with. They said that it starts with (and could end with)
course selection. They thought that it would be better if we could control what classes students are placed in so that they meet the
needs of both the students who want to be there and the students who don’t. They also thought that having more suspensions and
administrative visits to classrooms might also work . But would these solutions prevent long-term matters of disruptive students?
What should students like myself do? I see nothing changing soon because teachers “just don’t see” everything that happens in
their over-crowded classrooms. Possible ideas could include having some sort of camera system in the classroom, harsher penalties for offending students, harder course outlines and classroom/teacher aids .
We are all in high school to achieve one thing… to graduate! I don’t care what you do on your own time. But, when you disrupt your classroom, you are wasting my time, the teacher’s time, and your time! Things are going to change in the class to help
you pass or let you goof off, so please be respectful for the people sitting around you and for those teaching at the front.
Peter March & Freedom of Speech
By Keighlen Richards
Are you an honest person? I hope you are, because you won’t lie when I ask you if you watch soap operas. So, do you
watch soap operas? And if so, do you watch “One life to live”? Because if you do, you probably daydream about pretty boy
Nash Brennen, also known as Forbes March, in the real world. It seems that lately, he is not the only one in his family trying to make headlines. His father, Halifax native Peter March, has been causing quite the stir in our local area.
The Saint Mary’s Philosophy professor made headlines in the past week with his radical way of proving a point. By
posting the controversial political cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed, March may have gone above and beyond
displaying freedom of speech.
I guess this brings us to the debate of what exactly is “freedom of speech”. In Canada, this issue is hard to target. With
the wide array of cultures, many think that religion should be more respected although, others believe that freedom of
speech is the last thing we can grasp that isn’t governed by something or someone else.
Every person may have different reasons for their side of the story and for many different reasons. In my personal opinion, the actions of March were fine. I think that in the discipline of philosophy, you should have few boundaries. I also believe that it is important to delve into discussion about these topics. So in celebration of freedom of speech, I want to hear
what you think about the recent political cartoon debacle. E-mail thoughts and comments to [email protected].

Having an Opinion
Without Placing the Name
By Anonymous
A Voice for Jassi
By Sarah Livingstone, Junior Editor
“No Man Deserves Punishment For His Thoughts.”
-Anonymous
A person and a concept are two completely different
things. An idea does not have to have a name attached to it to
be valid. So what’s the issue with anonymous articles?
Standing up for what you believe in means that you care
deeply about an issue and wish to share that idea with others.
It does not necessarily mean that you wish to attach your own
image to the issue you believe in.
There are different ways to show your support or disagreement for an issue. Not everyone can become a oneperson crusade. Some dislike the limelight. Others would just
like to get an opinion out there for discussion and contemplation, and have no desire to see their name in print.
In a high school setting especially, many people would
rather not contribute if they could not submit under
“Anonymous”. This does not mean their ideas should be excluded. Just because someone is shy or lacks courage does
not give their thoughts any less importance.
Whether you are aware or not, you are somewhat biased
toward everything you read. As you read this article, you already have somewhat of an opinion formed on this issue. If
an author feels that his or her name will cause the reader to
become unnecessarily biased, then he or she should have the
option to exclude it. In this high school setting, where everyone knows everyone else and most likely already has an
opinion about them, it is difficult to avoid this bias. If you
feel you would rather not read an article just because there is
no author given, perhaps you should reassess your reasons
for reading this newspaper. Is it truly to become more informed, or just to see what that girl or guy in your English
class is really like?
I am willing to sign my name when I submit an article to
the Cheetah Perspective. Indeed, you will find it printed elsewhere in this newspaper. But I would like to prove my point
by remaining anonymous in this article. I have shared my
thoughts for others to read and consider. The fact that you do
not know who is writing this does not make my words less
honest or logical. I have accomplished what I set out to do,
and you, as the reader, have gathered the appropriate information from this article. I hope that next time you read an
article, you judge it based on the merits of the issue, and not
the person it is written by. And next time you see an article
signed anonymously, please do not disregard it. Read it carefully and think about the message being brought forward.
The author has something to say. I hope you listen.

During a night filled with procrastination towards my pending exams, I was aimlessly flipping
through channels when I came across a movie preview,
or so I thought. I wasn’t wrong about the movie preview but what I didn’t realize was that this was the love
story of a man and woman gone terribly wrong. The
story was shown on CBC’s, The Fifth Estate.
The story begins when Jassi Sidhu, a Canadian
woman from Winnipeg, visited the Punjab, the place
where her parents were born. Here, Jassi meets Mittoo,
soon to be the love of her life. The tale from here
should be picturesque but unfortunately Mittoo didn’t
boast the wealth that Jassi’s family did, therefore eliminating marriage prospects. Their love was too strong
and even though Jassi knew her family wouldn’t approve, the couple still wed in a secret ceremony.
Surjit, the bride’s uncle, discovered they had married and was horrified. He felt that Jassi had disgraced
and dishonored the family.
Only a few short months after their union, the couple was attacked by a group of men where Mittoo was
left to die and Jassi, kidnapped. After a call to her
mother it was confirmed that the men would murder
Jassi. She was found on June 9th, no longer alive, her
throat cut. Mittoo survived his viscous attack only to
be put in jail on a count of rape, one he denies and says
was arranged by Jassi’s uncle.
India is thought to have a corrupt and very timeconsuming justice system, whereas ours in Canada is
looked upon with high regard. In this case, India is the
country that has convicted seven men for Jassi’s murder. The case being held in Canada isn’t making much
progress.
After watching the program and seeing different
clips from the movie, I was left in shock. It’s hard to
fathom that Jassi’s uncle and mother both walk free in
our country but were both part of their daughter/niece’s
death. Surjit was even confronted by The Fifth Estate,
who had phone records of 147 calls to the convicted
killers before Jassi’s death. The evidence was inexplicable and he offered no explanations for it.
That was Jassi’s story, one that was cut far too short.

PETA: An Alternative Viewpoint
By Alex Spicer
PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for those of you of who have had the luxury of never having heard of them,
are a group of militant activists. They do a discredit to all activists everywhere through their standard practice of lying hypocrisy. Recently, PETA staged a rally here complaining about the fisheries. Their message ignored the fact that many people in this region make a
living selling fish. Furthermore, we have adapted to a diet of fish (and other animal products) as the result of millions of years of evolution. During this event, many of the activists were spotted to be wearing leather belts, sandals, and other items that came from animals.
I recently had the unfortunate experience of watching a PETA video narrated by Alec Baldwin. In it, there were many deplorable
scenes of animals being cruelly slaughtered. This was all shot on one farm. Instead of simply reporting them to the authorities, they decided to make a video, show it to a celebrity who has no idea what they’re talking about, and hurt the industry that supports millions of
people and supplies food to people in developing countries. Several statements, many of them literally grasping at straws, were made to
find fault with the industry that supplies many of our basic needs. One such statement was “Every time you buy milk, you are supporting
the veal industry.” The logic behind this argument was that all calves born to milk cows are male, and thus, cannot make milk, so are
used to make veal. The truth is, the veal industry does not exist because of the milk industry. It exists because of people liking veal. The
War on Veal will fail for the same reason that the War on Drugs campaign failed; as long as people want something, someone will always find a way to supply it. Always.
Another statement that PETA likes to make is that the grain used to feed one cow could be used to feed dozens of people. That is not
true. The grain used to feed cows is cattle grade feed. It is not suitable for human consumption. Not all the land we use to grow cattle
grade feed could grow human grade wheat. In addition, the increase in humans eating wheat increases the number of animals killed during the harvesting of the wheat. When something needs to be made in large quantities, it is mass produced. Mass production of wheat
requires mass harvesting technology called combine harvesters. This method of harvesting is responsible for the deaths of millions of
animals that live in the fields as well as animals that eat them, and so on up the food chain.
In addition , PETA is a very militant organization. They try to force their opinions on others. Many people do not like to wear fur,
even fake fur, because they have all heard the stories about the animal rights activist flipping out and assaulting them. Last year in England, a person wearing a fur coat had red paint thrown at them to ruin the coat. Many pieces of fake fur are made from recycled plastics
which contributes positively to the fight for the environment, thus helping animals. If this industry picked up, it would be a great help to
both causes. But people won’t buy fake fur because PETA has shown they only act if no thought has gone into their actions.
Now me, I like meat. But as propaganda (yes, that’s what it’s called when false information is distributed to try and change public
opinions) PETA’s message is disseminated further into our culture. A single serving of meat has nutrients that it takes four or more supplementary pieces of food to provide. Nuts form the biggest piece of supplementary diet by vegetarians and vegans. As demand for these
increases, more land is required to grow them and we put more of a strain on our already overworked environment.
There are many more things I could say about PETA but my space is limited. To conclude, PETA has taken to using some tactics
that are quite simply unacceptable in today’s world. They do, however, have the right to freedom of speech, so I am exercising my freedom of speech to try and help people realize exactly what’s going on with the messages sent by PETA.
Think the Government Is Not Interested In Teens? Think Again.
By Andrea Kenny
With our surprise election of January 23 in the past and a new Prime Minister at 24 Sussex Drive, it is now time for the
Conservative Party to buckle down and get to work on keeping some of their promises. Many enticements were offered up
during the 55-day-long campaign and the Conservative Party of Canada is most likely going to find an even more politically-weary Canadian electorate if it does not implement the change it so fervently pledged.
While politics are sometimes considered to be an over-eighteen game, the fact is that policies implemented by any current or future government are going to have an impact on the way we, as the oncoming electorate, will live our lives. When
you sort through all of the fragments of the platforms displayed by each of the federal political parties, there are really quite
a few ideas proposed by the new government that, if executed, will have a direct impact on our immediate future - especially
in terms of post-secondary education, careers, and youth aid.
The Conservative Party is focusing on cutting down on crime in Canada, and youth are a big part of that. After all, we
are the next generation of voters; the ones who are currently facing issues such as drugs, gangs, and youth crime. Stephen
Harper's Conservatives want to invest $100 million a year on new programs including ones to prevent youth crime, initiate

Government and Teens
(Continued from page 9)
a "national drug strategy" to deter teenagers from using drugs, and raise the Age of Consent (currently fourteen years old) to
sixteen years old, renaming it the Age of Protection. Also, that nice little Youth Criminal Justice Act umbrella that the under-eighteens have been hiding under as a way of escaping the consequences of their actions might just disappear, replaced
with adult sentencing for teens over fourteen years of age who commit violent or multiple crimes.
Within the next six months to two years, those of us are not following the 'Five Year Plan' we will be facing postsecondary education . Currently, the family income threshold for the Canada Student Loans program is ridiculously low,
leaving us with the ironic fact that you may not be able to get a loan for your post-secondary education when your parents
have middle-class incomes. Never mind the fact that in some cases, Mom and Dad aren't footing the bill. The Conservative
Party would raise that income threshold and add incentives to attending a post-secondary institution such as tax breaks, providing up to $500 each year for textbooks, and no levy on the first $10,000 of bursaries or scholarships.
For those of you looking into a career in the Armed Forces, the government is looking to recruit 13,000 regular
forces and 10,000 reserves while investing $5.3 billion in the Canadian Forces throughout a five-year period. Interested in
the RCMP? The government wants to invest the money that would be saved by erasing the failed gun registry program in
hiring 1,000 RCMP officers. Police work? They want at least 2,500 more police officers in Canadian communities. If you
were thinking of a career more along the lines of health care, then you are in demand. We have a severe shortage of doctors
in this country of ours, and the government desperately needs to increase the number of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. So get in there and let's start reducing those wait times.
As you can see, politics are far from being completely adult-centered. We play a huge role in the party platforms and the
Canadian community as a whole. So let's take advantage of that and push the new government to keep their promises.
Sixteen-Year Olds Want the Vote - Do We Deserve It?
By Andrea Kenny
For over a decade of elections, there has been talk of lowering the minimum voting age from eighteen to sixteen years old. As
was expected, the issue of the legal voting age was broached yet again during our recent federal election.
In 2001, two Alberta teenagers went to court, suing the Alberta government for the right to vote. They claimed that it was a violation of their human rights to not allow them to vote. Their argument was that a sixteen year old person can drive, join the Canadian
Reserves, be tried as an adult for a crime, and must pay income tax if they have a part-time job. So yes, it does seem a little unjust that
we are not allowed to vote for those representing our interests in government. The two Albertan teens felt that if sixteen and seventeen-year-olds had the vote, our elected officials would be more likely to consider our opinions and values. As true as this is, I can't
help but feel that giving people my age the right to vote is a mistake.
I am sorry to say it, but I truly do not believe that we are responsible enough to be trusted with such an enormous responsibility as
voting. It doesn't exactly inspire confidence when I heard comments in two of my classes last semester (which shall remain nameless)
such as: "The (insert party name here) don't get that many votes? Well, I'd vote for them - the poor guys deserve to get at least a few."
This is how we end up with irresponsible governments - all we need is for others to be thinking that exact thought and the country
is stuck with a party who cannot necessarily run the country. All because a few million people didn't feel like wasting their time to do
a little research and instead played 'eenie-meenie-miney-mo' to decide which box to check.
Many of the people in our school do not understand or care about politics. If I were to take a stab at the number, I would say that
as many as 80 to 85% have absolutely no clue what they are talking about when it comes to the government. So why on earth should
we have the vote? Why should the responsibility of choosing somebody to run our country be given to a group of people who don't
understand the issues, much less the consequences of their political decisions? In my opinion, a political course should be required for
high school graduation. How can we expect any less from the people who will someday soon be the heart and soul of the country?
When you were little, did you ever ask your parents for a pet and receive the answer that before they even considered it, you
would need to prove that you could handle the responsibility of caring for it? Well, earned equality is all well and good, but if we
want the chance to have a greater voice in the running of the country, we need to prove that we can handle it first. That means putting
a little more effort into understanding the system.

Analysis of Basic Karate Techniques.
By Mr. Allen
Two of the most basic techniques in karate are the reverse
punch (gyaku tsuki) and the front snap kick (mae geri keage).
Shown below are sequential photos of both techniques. Both
techniques are shown executed from a basic front stance
(zenkutsu dachi)
Reverse Punch (gyaku tsuki)
1. Hip movement is important for all karate movements. In
the first photo, the hips are rotated away from the target.
2. Just as the punch begins, the hips ‘rotate’. As seen in the
second photo, the right hip (same side as punching arm)
rotates towards the target. The punch is not yet complete,
but the hips and shoulders are now square to the target. Because the hips start rotating slightly before the shoulders, a
stretching across the abdominal muscles occurs. Stretched
muscles can contract more forcefully, allowing for quick
trunk rotation.
3. The third photo shows the finishing position. The kinetic
energy in the rotating hips and torso is transferred to the
punching arm. As the punching arm thrusts forward, the
opposite arm (left) is retracted to the left hip. This retraction stabilizes the body’s centre of gravity, thus allowing
the kinetic energy to be concentrated in the punching arm,
rather than acting to shift the body backwards, away from
the target.
Front Snap Kick (mae geri keage)
1. A different type of hip movement is used for the front
snap kick. In the first photo, the pelvis is level.
2. The second photo shows the kick half complete. Here,
the abdominal muscles have contracted to tilt the pelvis. This acts to stretch the hip flexors, the muscles responsible for lifting the knee. The hip flexors then contract to initiate the kick. The knee points toward the target.
3. As the kicker’s centre of gravity passes over the supporting leg, the quadriceps (thigh muscles) contracts to
extend the knees.

Applications
By Nazneen Rustom
By Afton Aikens
Course Selection is a time to briefly reflect upon the
future. No matter who you are, if you’re a Cheetah, you are
forced to make some decisions along the lines of your future.
You may have a ‘go with the flow-I don’t care’ personality, or
a ‘stressed, planning, end-all-be all’ attitude. Try not to have
either, but whatever the attitude, think positive. The truth is
that the courses you take in high school make a huge difference in what you can do after school. Nonetheless, one can
pick up courses they may need at night school, but it all co$ts
money. Taking the easy road in high school may appeal to
some of you, but it will not pay off in the future. And when I
say pay, I literally mean pay. Honestly, unless you have some
exception, your education determines your earning power. In
the long run, high school is a base on which you can build
your foundation.
My advice is to take courses that challenge you.
Challenge you to a certain degree, where you find you are
learning. You can do anything if you work hard for it. If you
know you gave 110% into what you did, you have succeeded
regardless what the outcome. The Nova Scotia Department of
Education has mandatory courses taken over an anticipated 3year high school plan in order to graduate. Some courses may
not interest you, but mandatory means the course must be
taken. Your Guidance councillors should ensure that you have
your requirements to graduate in your first semester grade 12.
If you would like to pursue anything after high school, it is
your responsibility to research what you want afterwards
like College, or University. Look at the programs they offer.
If you are interested in a program, look at their acceptable
university high school courses. It’s confusing, but you have to
work backwards (Future program >Your Interests >Your Requirements) Unfortunately, every grade 12 Credit at CPA is
not acceptable in University or College. In most cases, it is
any Grade 12 level credit that counts for admission into other
programs. Don’t forget, every course (Gr.10-Gr.12) still appears on your transcript, received in Grade 12.
The more you plan, and the more you work hard, will
help you. I would hate to look back and think I could have
done better, if I had just made the effort. Most of all, think
about your goals. My former music teacher, Mr. Nathan
Beeler, once said, “Do what you love, and do it well.” By
well, he meant the best! He is an inspiration. Effort into anything you do will pay off.

It’s your future…take the time, take control.
February is undoubtedly the best month of the school year.
You may be questioning my reason behind this claim – hasn’t it
always been June, the time where grade tens get that relief of
knowing that next year, there will be a new wave of students
scrutinized by the entire school? Let me explain: June is really an
era where to-be-grads are running around, ecstatically concentrated on prom night and the ceremony where they will officially
end their days as CPA students. Doesn’t sound like the real
world to you either? That is why I’ve brought February to your
attention.
February gave us Cheetahs a brand new semester, and it is
always refreshing to see new faces around you in class. It is also
the month of Valentine’s Day (for all of you with a special someone). The positive side of this event has been debatable since the
beginning of time, but hey, we get a school dance out of it! February is the shortest month of the year – and that much closer to
March break, which couldn’t come any sooner, I’m sure we all
agree. To put the cherry on top of a great twenty-eight days, my
birthday is in February, and there’s enough said there. Party
time.
However, the good times must subside to reality at some
point. Grade twelves: you know all too well what I’m about to
say. University applications are daunting this month, with March
being the deadline of acceptance for many institutions. Some of
us currently have the reassurance known as “early acceptance”,
but for those who don’t…we’re all in the same boat, and no, it’s
not sinking.
Concentration is the key to getting any excruciatingly stressful task out of the way. Do not put yourself through the agony
that some students succumb to while involved in the applying
process. Look around the campus at places you are considering,
and if you cannot catch a flight there, due to the rest of life’s obligations, simply go online and scour the university’s website.
Resources are everywhere. We all know university students
who really would be more than happy to give us an insight to life
at their school. Many of us have taken road trips to Acadia and X
(myself not included, so leave a spot in the car next time!) Remember, there are so many options for you, and despite your take
on it at the most stressful of times, you have a lot to offer the
post-secondary school you have your eye on. Scholarships are
always an option, so become aware of the programs offered in as
many universities as possible.
It can sometimes be a competitive road we are on. If you
want entrance into a program with specific requirements, along
with three of your friends, and the girl who sits behind you in
English, you may get nervous and question yourself. Always
keep your goals in mind. This will keep you oriented when you
are filling out your applications.
There are many pieces of advice that work differently for each
individual. Don’t leave it too late; as I’m sure everyone has told
you already, and my personal advice to you is enjoy the month of
February (it’s the best one there is) and good luck with your applications!

Tender Loving Cheetahs Advice Column
By Laura “Gramma Dora” Legere and Keighlen “Sistah KK” Richards
Dear TLC,
I used to be really good friends with someone, until lately. She dropped out of school, started taking hard drugs,
and doesn’t seem to care about anything anymore. I want to help her, but at the same time I don’t because of all
the times she’s hurt me in the past. What should I do?
- Anonymous
Gramma Dora:
In my experience, people usually don’t start rebelling unless they have a legitimate reason to do so in the first
place. Has something changed in your friend’s life? Perhaps her parents have recently gotten divorced, or she’s
trying to gain attention, or even simply because she’s been feeling depressed. I know I sound like an episode of
Oprah, but you really should try and think about why your friend is doing what she’s doing before you completely
condemn her for it. Although she may have hurt you in the past, that may have not been her intention, and perhaps now is the time when she needs you the most. It sounds like your friend is out of control and may need
someone to help guide her out of this direction before her life gets any worse. As hard as it may be, try talking to
her and explain to her that you’re worried about her. She probably really needs you right now, and could be going
through a tough time in her life.
Basically the best advice I can give you is try to be there for her. Not only will you hopefully be able to persuade her to get her life back on track, but she will also appreciate it later. However, if talking to her doesn’t
work, you may want to consider talking to her parents about your friend’s behavior. I hope with your support
you’re friend will be able to straighten out her life. Be sure to write back and tell us how things worked out.
Dear TLC,
I have a quick question, and I have no clue what to do. See there's this guy that is amazing, let's call him George,
and he's all that I think about. I know it's crazy that I like a guy that I hardly know, but whenever I look at him,
he's the only one I see and I get lost in his beautiful eyes. He's aware that I'm alive just because we're in the same
class. I don't know what to do, should I leave it alone and just keep my feelings inside or should I do something
about it?
In Love
Sistah KK:
Dear “In Love,” it sounds like you have a doozy of a problem, and I think that every teenage girl has felt the
same way once or twice. First, I guess you should evaluate why you feel so strongly about this person, why does
he seem to shine through. Do you really know much about him? Maybe you have just fallen in “love” with the
idea of this person? After careful consideration, I think that you should go for it. Leaving your feelings bottled up
is not the best idea. What if you approached him and started talking to him and you become high school sweethearts, fall madly in love, and get married one day! Not saying that this will happen, but you never know what
could happen. Life is all about taking chances. You wouldn’t want to miss your only chance, would you?

GameMastah’s TCG Review
By Andrew McWatch
Welcome, CPAers to another edition of the TCG Review. Enemy of Justice:
“Elemental Heroes” best fear this set, ‘cause its featuring a new breed of Hero, the “Destiny Heroes”, including the “Bladedge” of the Heroes, “Dreadguy”. Most people know that Elemental Heroes Avian and Burstinatrix fuse to form “Flame Wingman”. But a new Hero is introduced in this set that follows the same Fusion Material, “Elemental Hero Flamephoenix”, and another that follows the same Fusion Material for “Shining Flare Wingman” (Flame Wingman and Sparkman), “Elemental Hero Shining Flarephoenix”. With this set, mostly composed of Fairy supporters, this set appears to be promising.
Di). Assailant:
D.D. Assailant is the top card in the game. Simply known for its removal effect. He only has 1700 ATK points, but when he attacks a monster, say “Dark Magician of Chaos”, ‘which has 2800 ATK Points and doesn’t destroy it, it has the same abilities as ~D.D. Warrior Lady”,
it removes both monsters from play. On “Ebay”, “D.D Assailant”(s) are going quickly at a high price. Even for 5 of the “D.D Assailants”,
the price currently (as of Feb. 12/06), they range at $69.00. They come from the game “Destiny Board Traveler”, but most of the time, I try
to find it, and the cards (including the Assailant), have been “ripped” from the box itself, to sell the other 2 cards (Emes the Infinity, and
Twinheaded Beast), and keep the Assailant for themselves. The new list is coming out soon, and as a Duelist, I’m hoping that “D.D. Assailant” will be restricted to I during the next changeover of the Banned List.
Shadow of Infinity:
Many people thought that Shadow of Infinity (SOl-EN) would be a Zombie supporter set, but they were wrong. Shadow of Infinity is in fact,
an insect supporter set, featuring “The Sacred Beasts” (Uria, Lord of Searing Flames, Hamon, Lord of Striking Thunder, and Raviel, Lord of
Phantasms), and more Elemental Hero supporters, and Cyber Dragon supporters (Cyber Barrier Dragon, Cyber Laser Dragon, and Proto
Cyber Dragon). This set will be an interesting assist with those that want to make Insect Decks.
Duelist Packs:
Duelists Packs are out now. Based on 2 of the characters from “Yu-Gi-Oh GX!”, Jaden Yuki, and Chazz Princeton, this series will feature
Elemental Heroes galore for Jaden fans, while Chazz revolves around the “VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon”, and “Armed Dragon” series, including a new Armed Dragon, “LV 10”, which is in fact, a “Lightning Vortex” (Destroy all face-up monsters on your opponent’s side
of the field). Many cards were reprinted, including the “XYZ-Dragon Cannon”, and “Armed Dragon LV7”. Fans can also expect a Special
Edition series, featuring 4 possible Variant Cards.
TV Series:
English:
The “Shadow Riders Saga” has begun in various cities. The Shadow Riders are duelists that want to acquire the 7 Spirit Keys to unlock the
power of the “Sacred Beasts” (See Shadow of Infinity Topic), while Jaden, Bastion, and a few other duelists and residents at Duel Academy
try to keep the “Sacred Beasts” from being released. Jaden faced off against Nightshroud (Darkness), and took on his Red-Eyes Darkness
Dragon Deck (Based on Dragon’s Roar Structure Deck), and won using a new Hero, Elemental Hero Wildedge, which can attack all monsters on the opposing side of the field at the same tune. Afterwards, Alexis realizes that Nightshroud is actually her missing brother, Atticus
Rhodes. With Atticus safe and sound, Camula, the mysterious Vampire Duelist of the Shadow Riders set out to finish off what Nightshroud
started. Her Deck focuses on Zombie-Type monsters (Based on Zombie’s Madness Structure Deck). She wanted to duel Zane, but had to
duel Crowler instead. His “Ancient Gear Castle” came in handy to summon Ancient Gear Golem, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Camula,
and Crowler lost to her “Vampire Genesis”.
Japanese:
Chazz has lost his marbles. He painted the entire Obelisk Blue dorm white. Alexis decided to duel Chazz to knock some sense into him, but
she loses the Duel (This goes to show “If you can’t beat them, join them”), as Alexis donned her Obelisk “White” blazer. Meanwhile, Zane
is progressed in a regional duelling event, where everytime a player is dealt damage, electricity is surged through their body. Zane goes over
the “dark side”, and calls out a new Cyber Dragon, the “Chimeratech Overdragon”, and dons a black coat, to symbolize his change. On the
flipside, Jaden must duel another of “Obelisk White”s duelists who has been affected by the change. This has to do with Edward Phoenix’s
fortuneteller, Saiou, and his Association of the Light, who wants to control Duel Academy. Jaden used a new Neo Space monster, Ground
Mole. His opponent, Gin, used a Big Core/B.E.S. Deck, focused on the Big Core, and B.E.S. Monster Series (Crystal Core, Tetran, Covered
Core), and the outcome of the Duel will be decided later
on.

ETC Benefit Show
Project ETC (Educate The Children) had a successful benefit show in February to raise money to build a
school in Sierra Leone. The show was held at the Bedford Youth Center, where bands displayed their talents.
Their was also an informative slideshow demonstrating the strife in Sierra Leone. By the end of the night, we
raised over $600 from ticket and food sales. Thanks so much to those who came and helped us out. Thanks
also to the bands, whose performances were absolutely amazing.
Here are some of the night’s highlights-

Annapolis Falls Short of Navy Standards
By Braedon Clark
Annapolis, directed by Justin Lin, is a difficult film to review; not bad, but certainly not great. Annapolis
shows flashes of brilliance but not enough to mask its many shortcomings. Early on in the film, we are introduced
to Jake Huard (James Franco) who is holding down a job building Navy warships. However, Jake has always
dreamed of attending the Naval Academy that sits across the river in picturesque Annapolis, Maryland. Much to
Jake’s delight, he is awarded one of the final spots at the prestigious Academy, an institution that prides itself on
the outstanding officers it has produced over its illustrious 161-year history.
Unfortunately, Jake finds the intense pressure and discipline that defines the Academy too much to handle.
He quickly makes enemies with Midshipman Lt. Cole (Tyrese Gibson), a hard-as-nails officer who feels Jake
doesn’t have what it takes to make it through his “plebe”, or freshman year.
When Jake returns home for the Christmas holidays, he asks his father, whom also works at the shipyard,
if he could get his old job back. However, after some soul-searching, Jake decides to return to the Academy to uphold a promise he made to his mother years before. After Christmas, Jake devotes all of his time and energy into
training for the famous Brigade Championships, a boxing tournament that is the biggest event of the year at the
Academy. Jake trains with Lt. Halloway, an attractive female officer with whom Jake develops a relationship during their countless hours of late-night training.
By the time the Brigade Championships roll around, Jake has won back the support of many of his fellow
plebes, who grew tired of Jake’s constant confrontations with Lt. Cole, and the harsh punishments that were sure
to follow. Jake breezes through the first two rounds of the tournament, setting up the inevitable showdown with
the hulking Lt. Cole in the final. While the result of the final fight is best left unsaid, it is obvious that the tournament was more than simply a way for Jake to get back at Lieutenant Cole. The tournament, and particularly the
last fight, became somewhat of a metaphor for Jake’s struggles to be accepted by his peers, his superiors, and perhaps most importantly, by his father, a man who didn’t truly believe his son could become a naval officer.
While Annapolis has some strong points, including stellar performances by James Franco and Tyrese Gibson, there are some elements of the film that tend to hold it back. Military clichés, such as super-strict officers and
grueling physical training, seem fairly accurate but quickly become over-used and tend to shift focus away from
Jake and his transformation from confused young man to confident soldier. As well, Jordana Brewster’s performance as Lt. Holloway seemed lacking in any real substance and appeared to be an attempt to inject romance into a
film that really didn’t need any. In the end, Annapolis did just enough to get noticed but not quite enough to stand
out; in the movie industry. That combination equates to mediocrity, both on the big screen and at the box office.

Horoscopes
By Shumona De and Laura Legere
Aries (March 21 - April 19) : Oh dear…you’re not
yourself, are you, Aries? I can see you’ve lost that
twinkle in your eyes and that spring in your step. But
wait… What’s that smell? I know, it’s the smell of
freshness, and I’m not talking about Mr. Clean! It’s a
brand new semester and a great time to start fresh with
new classes and new teachers. So sit back and relax! I
see your February blues melting away faster than
M&M’s under a hippo. …Sorry, I promise I’ll think of
better metaphors after my brain has recovered from
exams.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20) : Taurus you’re in luck
this month! It seems that no matter what you touch it
turns to gold. From that interview for a new job, to
that test you aced, you seem to be doing everything
right! BUT don’t let all this good luck get to your head
because like all good things, it won’t last forever. In
fact, you better stop reading this horoscope before the
rest of your luck runs out! Quick, you don’t have
much time! SO RUN! RUN TAURUS, RUN!
Gemini (May 21- June 20) : Hey Gemini, Redbull
called and they want you to be their new spokesperson. Why you ask? BECAUSE YOU’VE GOT SO
MUCH DARN ENERGY! For some reason this
month has you pumped and you’re loving life. Why
not use this energy to do something constructive? Like
helping the homeless or helping your friend with that
math she’s stuck on. Just whatever you do, do not consume more than a teaspoon of sugar daily or you may
physically combust from over stimulation.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22) : OMG CANCER
YOU’RE STUCK!!!...in a nutshell that is! NO, NOT
LITTERALLY, DON’T FLAIL YOUR ARMS! Allow
me to explain, you have many decisions to make this
month, so many in fact that you’re feeling overwhelmed and stuck! The good news is this won’t last
for long. But, bad news is that due to your wild flailing
you’ve managed to hit yourself in the face and now
have quite the nasty bruise. Yeesh, you’d better get
some ice for that.

Leo (July 23 - August 22) : Wait a second…was there
always a purple flying elephant delivering the mail?
And why is that turnip farmer following you? Don’t be
alarmed Leo, there is nearly a 100% chance that
you’re going to have a very bizarre month. It has to do
with the lunar what-cha-call-it and the solar doohickey. Anyway, don’t let my high-tech astrology
terms confuse you. All you need to know is that weird
things are going to be happening to you this month.
Whether they be for the better or for the worse, just
hold on to that purple flying elephant delivering the
mail and enjoy the ride!
Virgo (August 23 – September 22) : It’s time to stop
closing the doors of opportunity Virgo! You keep hiding from anything new and exciting, and you’re missing out on all the fun! Its time to start being more open
to new things and you’ll soon wonder what you were
hiding from! Unless of course you’re opening the door
to my closet…my best advice would be to close that
door as quickly as possible before a stray spatula
comes plummeting towards your eye…

Libra (September 23 – October 22) : This month, you
are in touch with your inner shrub. “Shrub?” Yes.
Shrub. Look. I really didn’t want to have to be the one
to break it to you, but sometimes when you love someone, you just have to tell them the truth. Libra, I love
you. So please understand that it pains me to inform
you that your new hairstyle makes you look somewhat
like a poodle that got into a bad accident with hairspray and a teasing comb.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 22) : When it comes
to school this month, you tend to be a fan of the “Why
do today, when I can procrastinate all day tomorrow?”
We’ve all had our share of Sunday night meltdowns
with a strong pot of coffee (Dewar-style) and an eagerly awaiting yet tragically blank Word document.
Avoid the inevitable, Scorpio. Organize. Prioritize. Put
that agenda to use (if you can find it. Try your closet,
the bathroom cupboard, and the veeeery bottom of
your school bag if you’re having difficulty). With a
little effort, you’ll wake up every Monday morning
feeling rested and refreshed.
Sagittarius (November 23 – December 21) : Sagittarius, we need to have a little talk. About your attitude.
See, over here at the Cheetah Perspective, we’ve noticed that lately, you’ve been a little…off. Just kind
of…weird. Okay, listen. You’re being too nice. Seriously. I mean, it’s great that you’ve stopped having
those terrible tantrums (I still have a little scar from
where you hit me with that machete), but if you don’t
stop thanking me for my existence and apologizing for
yours, I’m probably going to have to feed you to the
cheetah. Yeah, we have a real cheetah. Whatcha gonna
do?

around to it. From asking out that girl/guy you’ve been
with for who-knows-how-many-months-now, to sending in those ridiculously stressful university applications, you just do not feel like dealing with your responsibilities. My advice? Suck it up, princess. March
will NOT wait for you if you’re gonna dilly-dally.
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) : Sometimes it
seems like you’re a gosh-darned superhero, considering how busy you’ve been, caught up in school, work,
and saving your city. It’s time to pop a chill pill (note:
the author of this horoscope does not condone drug
use.) and reeeelax. Call a friend. Remember those?
Friends? Get out there and get your party on. Social
life lacking? Give me a call and we’ll hang out. I’m a
fun girl, I swear. PS. Happy Birthday!
Pisces (February 19 – March 20) : Well, Pisces, my
favourite fishy friend. It seems you’ve taken Valentine’s Day to heart. This month, you are lovey, sappy,
cheesy, and ridiculous. And the weird thing? No one
seems to mind. Your good mood is actually rubbing
off on the people around you. Even karma’s in your
favour. You seem to have an endless supply of good
luck. So you know what, Pisces? Keep smiling. It’s
actually working out for you.
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) : This month,
you are feeling slow. Slow like cold molasses. (Sick.) I
don’t mean slow as in stupid, although, sometimes we
just can’t avoid that. No, I mean that you know you
have a million things to do and a million decisions to
make, you are taking your sweet, sweet time getting
