Monthly Weather Review
Australia
August 2013
The Monthly Weather Review - Australia is produced twelve times each year by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's
National Climate Centre. It is intended to provide a concise but informative overview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant
weather events in Australia for the month. To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the
information is based on electronic reports. Although every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results
can be considered only preliminary until complete quality control procedures have been carried out. Major discrepancies will be
noted in later issues.
We are keen to ensure that the Monthly Weather Review is appropriate to the needs of its readers. If you have any comments

Units of measurement
Except where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometres
per hour (km/h).
Observation times and periods
Each station in Australia makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past
24 hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the following
conventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:
Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of that
day.
Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of that
day.
Mean temperatures are the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures.
Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may have
occurred on the previous calendar day.
Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.
Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.
Area averages for temperature are calculated using the ACORN-SAT dataset.
Climatological values
The climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from the years
1961 to 1990. They are not shown for sites with less than 25 years of record in that time, as they cannot then be calculated
reliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from all available years of record; the number of years can vary markedly
from site to site.
Records
The tables of records are not exhaustive, as they only show sites with at least 30 years of record. This may exclude locations
where a new site has been established; this means even some major cities and towns may not be listed.
Maps
The temperature and rainfall maps are intended to give an overview of the country. There could be discrepancies between the
values shown on these maps and those at individual locations, as a result of the way the maps are generated. A wide range of
maps of rainfall, temperature and other variables, covering the whole country and smaller regions can be found on our web site
at www.bom.gov.au/climate/maps/.
Accessing data
Tables of daily values for selected sites are included toward the back of the Monthly Weather Review. Data from many more
sites and for other times are available from our web site at www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/.

Overview
Area-averaged temperatures were above average for
Australia during August; maxima were the
second-highest on record (+2.60 °C anomaly) and
although minima were less unusually warm (+0.59 °C
anomaly), they still contributed to Australia's
second-warmest August mean temperatures
(+1.60 °C anomaly). The Northern Territory and all
states except Victoria and Tasmania placed in the
highest eight records for maximum temperature,
Tasmania was the only region to place outside the top
nine for mean temperature, and Victoria recorded its
second-highest minimum temperature. While the
warm anomalies were mostly a result of persistent
warmth rather than individual hot days, a number of
locations set new August records (see page 16) for
highest daily maximum or minimum temperature and
highest monthly mean maxima or minima.
Nationally-averaged rainfall was very much below
average for Australia (46% below the long-term
average); two thirds of the country recorded rainfall
totals in the lowest 30% of records. However,
near-average falls were recorded across the greater
southwest of Western Australia and the lower
southeast. Large areas of Tasmania, southern Victoria
and southeastern South Australia recorded monthly
totals in the highest 10% of records, with records set
in some areas (see page 18).

Significant weather
Tornadoes in South Australia
A cold front brought showers and thunderstorms to
southeast South Australia on 3 August, spawning at
least two tornadoes. The first cut a narrow, 1.5 km
long swathe though the town of Kingston at 12:40 pm
damaging around 25 buildings, 14 significantly.
Several people witnessed the tornado but no injuries
were reported. The second tornado was spawned by
a separate shower soon after, causing damage to a
large farm shed and trees on a property at Keilira,
about 30 km northeast of Kingston.
The first of several floods for
Tasmania
Frequent cold fronts and low pressure troughs
combined with warmer-than-average sea surface
temperatures around Tasmania led to persistent rain
across the north and west of the state throughout
August. As catchments were already saturated from
good falls during July, heavy rain resulted in several
floods.
A short but intense rain event produced falls of
around 20 to 60 mm across the north and west on the
evening of 5 August. Three Hummock Island recorded
36 mm, its highest August daily rainfall on record. The
heavy rain caused some flash flooding in the Railton
area, where water crossed the railway line and
temporarily suspended services, and caused a rockfall
near Penguin. The Meander River exceeded minor
flood levels at Meander Bridge (2.1 m), Westwood
Bridge (4.5 m) and Strathbridge (6.0 m).
Waterspout injures several near
Perth
A suspected waterspout on 6 August caused damage
and injured six people, two seriously, when it was
driven ashore and into a construction site near North
Coogee in Western Australia. Scaffolding collapsed,
buildings were damaged and a heavy concrete
building slab was lifted up by estimates winds near
100 km/h.
Damaging winds in Sydney and
Melbourne
Gale-force winds on the 12th felled trees and caused
damage to a number of properties in Sydney, with the
worst damage in southwest and western suburbs.
The State Emergency Service (SES) received more
than 635 calls for help, involving more than 300 felled
3
Monthly Weather Review - Australia - August 2013
trees, while more than 17 000 homes lost power.
Observatory Hill, Bankstown and Camden all recorded
maximum gusts in excess of 90 km/h, with gusts of
87 km/h at Penrith and more than 100 km/h in parts of
Wollongong.
On the same day squally showers passed through
Melbourne associated with a storm cell embedded in
a cold front. Gusts of more than 85 km/h were
recorded at St Kilda, Melbourne Airport and Essendon
Airport. The SES received 670 calls for help, mostly
for fallen trees and tree limbs in the city and eastern
suburbs, although wind-lifted roofs were also
reported. Train and tram lines also experienced
disruptions, some caused by a small section of fallen
brick wall near Richmond. Over 9000 homes lost
power across around 50 suburbs, with the most
widespread damage recorded in the outer east.
Flooding returns to northern
Tasmania
A cold front brought heavy rain to northern and
western Tasmania overnight on 13 August. Totals of
30 to 60 mm were recorded across the north, with
78 mm at Mount Victoria. Flash flooding resulted
around Launceston and in Smithton. The North Esk
River passed moderate flood levels (peaking at
3.89 m at Corra Linn on the morning of the 14th). The
Lower Meander and Upper South Esk rivers also
experienced moderate flooding, with minor flooding in
the Mersey and Forth rivers. Several businesses on
Hobart Road in Kings Meadows near Launceston
required emergency assistance due to flooding. The
SES also received several calls for assistance across
the north for roof damage and water damage, as well
as blocked and overflowing drains, and a landslip at
Kimberly bank on the western railway line. Sections of
rail track were lifted near Evandale and some roads in
the north also had to be closed due to flooding.
Gale-force winds for the southeast,
with more flooding in Tasmania
A band of strong to near gale force northerly winds
ahead of a vigorous cold front crossed South Australia
on Friday 16 August. Gale force northerlies were
recorded briefly at Port Augusta and at Port Lincoln,
where a yacht broke its moorings, with wind gusts of
90 to 96 km/h also recorded at Wudinna on the West
Coast and at Minlaton on the Yorke Peninsula. The
front progressed through Victoria, bringing heavy rain
to the southwest and causing road closures (including
one road collapse) and minor flooding of some homes
around Portland, before reaching Melbourne
overnight.
Strong winds continued over the weekend and into
Monday as a second cold front wrapped around a
deep low crossed the coastline of southern Australia
and Tasmania on the 18th. Storm force winds were
recorded across the coastal southeast, with strong
wind gusts also recorded in the Grampians and
Victorian alpine region.
Wind gusts of 90 km/h or more were recorded on
Kangaroo Island and in the Mount Lofty Ranges early
on the 18th and in the Grampians between the 16th
and 18th. Wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h were
recorded at Wilsons Promontory between the 18th
and 20th and in the Victorian Alps between the 16th
and 18th. Cape Grim recorded wind gusts in excess
of 150 km/h overnight on the 18th with gusts around
90 km/h also reported across northern Tasmania on
the 18th.
By Sunday, the Victorian SES had responded to 330
calls for help with fallen trees, downed power lines
and damage to structures. About half the calls came
from the metropolitan region. Wind damage was also
recorded in South Australia with dozens of trees
brought down across the Mount Lofty Ranges,
particularly south of about Mount Barker.
The Tasmanian SES received 150 calls for assistance
on the 18th and 19th as heavy rain across northern
Tasmania saw flash flooding across the northwest
and Launceston in addition to downed powerlines,
fallen trees and landslips. Daily rainfall totals were
between 20 and 40 mm across the north and west on
each day from the 16th to 18th. Mount Victoria
recorded the highest daily total with 87 mm over the
24 hours to 9 am on the 19th. Snow fell down to
400 m on Sunday night and more than 17 roads were
closed in the north. Tasmania Police listed 14 roads as
flooded. There was moderate flooding in the North
Esk (peaking at Corra Linn with 3.91 m on the
morning of the 19th), Mersey, Lower Meander, Lower
4
Monthly Weather Review - Australia - August 2013
Macquarie, and Upper South Esk river basins, and
minor flooding in the Forth river basin. A major
landslide closed the Western Explorer Road between
Circular Head and Corinna on the 20th.
Another Tornado for South Australia
A heavy convective shower spawned a short-lived
tornado, which damaged three properties near
Waterloo Corner on the northern outskirts of Adelaide
just before 6 pm on 21 August. A glasshouse was
smashed, a 10-tonne truck tipped over and a large
iron-clad shed extensively damaged. Flying glass
debris from the glasshouse damaged solar panels and
trucks parked nearby. The damage path was about
500 m long and 20 m wide.
Damaging winds for South Australia
An active low pressure trough, with accompanying
high-based thunderstorms and showers, intensified
over western parts of South Australia late on 28
August and tracked across central and eastern parts
during the night and morning of 29 August. Wind
gusts to 100 km/h were recorded at Coober Pedy late
on the 28th; and to around 90 km/h at Woomera,
Mount Crawford and Kadina in the pre-dawn hours on
the 29th. In the Kadina–Wallaroo area the wind
damaged trees, fences and TV antennae.
A windy close to the month for
southwest Western Australia
Between the 30th and 31st a deep low situated well
to the southwest of Western Australia produced
strong winds across the southwest. Wind gusts of
over 90 km/h were registered at a number of sites
along the coast, with the highest being 107 km/h at
Cape Leeuwin in the late morning on 31 August.
Minor roof damage was reported in Denmark, Collie,
Narrogin, Albany, and Jerramungup, whilst power
lines were reported down in Tambellup.

Synoptic summary
At the start of the month, a weakening high pressure
system was located over the southern Tasman Sea,
while a deepening low pressure system was south of
New Caledonia. A surface trough was also located
over a large expanse of inland Western Australia. In
the southern states, a series of cold fronts and
associated surface troughs progressed eastwards
over the Bight.
By the 4th, the cold front and surface trough had
moved off the east coast of Australia, replaced by a
large high pressure system. Central Australia was
dominated by high pressure for several days, while
southern parts of Western Australia, South Australia
and Victoria, and most of Tasmania were exposed to
more cold fronts, typical for late winter in these
states.
Surface troughs had formed over New South Wales,
southeastern Victoria, Tasmania, and just south of
Western Australia by the 7th. Northern Australia was
still under the influence of high pressure, with
continued fine conditions in these parts.
A high pressure system once again dominated central
Australia on the 15th, while a trough over central
Western Australia traversed eastwards ahead of a
cold front just off the southwest coast of Western
Australia. A surface trough off the Fraser Coast in
Queensland linked to cold front and another low
pressure system in the eastern Tasman Sea.
Following the high, a deep low and cold front
extended well into southern Western Australia and
South Australia on the 16th, continuing to sweep
through eastern states on the 17th. A linking surface
trough extended through the central interior of New
South Wales and Queensland. Yet another deep low
strengthening in the Bight, and an associated cold
front, resulted in some significant falls across South
Australia, Victoria and Tasmania.
A strong cold front entered the west on the 8th, while
surface troughs produced moderate rainfall over most
of Victoria and Tasmania. In the east, a complex low
pressure system formed off the New South Wales
coast and an associated surface trough stretched
northward over Queensland waters.
A period of high pressure followed over most of
Australia, maintaining fine weather over much of the
mainland until around the 23rd. Despite most of
central and northern Australia being subject to high
pressure, southern Victoria, southeast South
Australia, southwest Western Australia and western
Tasmania continued to be under the influence of a
series of cold fronts.
Another surface trough over the eastern Coral Sea
linked to the deepening low on the 9th. The cold
fronts continued to move through the Southern
Ocean; progressing through the Bight towards
Tasmania and southern Victoria. A surface trough over
central New South Wales was followed by another
deep surface trough over the east of Western
Australia in the wake of a strong cold front that
pushed through the Bight on the 11th.
On the 25th, a complex low pressure system and
upper level trough was located off the west coast of
Western Australia. This system moved across
southern Western Australia, reaching the southern
interior by the 27th and stretching though South
Australia and into the Bight. Another cold front off the
west coast began moving eastward, crossing
southern Western Australia and South Australia at the
end of the month.
On the 12th and 13th, a surface trough stretched
from the central Northern Territory, through central
7
Australia and across New South Wales while the tip
of a cold front swept through southern Victoria and
Tasmania, bringing rain to these regions.
Monthly Weather Review - Australia - August 2013
Temperatures
Area-averaged August maximum and minimum
temperatures were both above average for Australia.
Maxima were the second-highest on record at 2.60 °C
above the long-term average, while minima were
0.59 °C above average. Mean temperatures (the
average of the maximum and minimum) were also the
second-warmest on record for August at 1.60 °C
above average.
August continued the string of very warm months,
with both the past 12 months (September 2012 to
August 2013) and year to date (January to August) the
warmest on record for mean temperatures. The
area-averaged mean temperature for the 12 months
to August 2013 was 22.92 °C, 1.11 °C above the
1961–1990 average. Previously the warmest
12-month anomaly had been +1.08 °C between
February 2005 and January 2006. August was also
the fifth month this year with a mean temperature
anomaly of more than +1.0 °C.
Maximum temperatures
Mean daily maximum temperatures were in the
highest 10% of records across most of Australia, the
main exception being in the southeast. Daytime
temperatures across much of the interior were more
than 3 °C above average, with Queensland, Western
Australia and the Northern Territory each recording
their second-warmest August. Mean maxima were
within one degree of the long-term average across
the southeast and parts of the Cape York Peninsula.
August commenced with near-average maximum
temperatures across Australia. Warmer-than-average
temperatures emerged in the western Pilbara and
Gascoyne on 3 August as a high pressure system
centred over Western Australia directed northeasterly
winds towards the coast. As the high moved
eastwards over the following days,
warmer-than-average temperatures expanded across
the south of Western Australia, then South Australia,
reaching through northern New South Wales and
southern Queensland to the east coast on the 7th.
Cold fronts crossing the southern coast of the
continent on the 8th and 9th caused the warmth to
briefly contract. Temperatures were still above
average across the southwestern quarter of Australia
(excluding southwest Western Australia) on the 8th as
north to northwesterly flow ahead of the front drew
warm air onto the Nullarbor Plain, where
temperatures were more than 10 °C above average.
The warm temperatures were focused over central
Australia and northern South Australia on the 9th
before expanding into the east and Western Australia
8
Monthly Weather Review - Australia - August 2013
again, then shifting into the Northern Territory,
Queensland and northern New South Wales on the
12th, where they generally remained focussed for the
next eight days.
The warmest temperatures of the month were
recorded on the 20th. Timber Creek reached a
maximum temperature of 39.7 °C, surpassing the
previous Northern Territory August daily maximum
temperate by half a degree (39.2 °C, at Mango Farm
on 25 August 1998). Timber Creek also tied for the
second-hottest August day on record for Australia
(39.7 °C was also recorded at Wyndham Aero,
Western Australia, on 31 August 2009). A number of
other stations also saw record-high daily maximum
temperatures (see page 16) in the latter part of the
month, including 39.5 °C at Warmun, Western
Australia, (an equal-fifth-highest August daily
maximum temperature for Australia).
Cooler-than-average temperatures emerged in
scattered areas of the southeast mainland as a deep
low south of Tasmania extended a strong cold front
across the southeast on the 19th, and were more
broadly recorded across the southeast and Tasmania
on the 20th. This system was associated with severe
weather across the southeast and saw snow fall at
low levels in parts of Tasmania.
Another frontal system passed before a high pressure
system again moved over Western Australia from 22
August. Warmer-than-average temperatures spread
eastwards from southwest Western Australia,
covering most of the southern mainland except for
Victoria and the Southwest Land Division of Western
Australia on the 25th. By the 27th the unusually warm
temperatures had spread north and covered most of
the continent, excluding the far northern tropics and
parts of the west of Western Australia, over the last
week of the month and continued into September.
This significant heat event is discussed in Special
Climate Statement 46 – exceptionally warm late
winter/early spring with unusually persistent warm
conditions over the last 12 months.
Anomalies of mean daily maximum
temperature in August 2013

Minimum temperatures
Minima were above average across southern
Australia, with night-time temperatures in the highest
10% of records for much of Victoria, southern
Western Australia and coastal South Australia,
extending in a band from Ceduna to the area around
Birdsville. Some sites on the southern coast set
records for August minima (see page 16). Overall,
minima were the second-warmest on record for
August in Victoria; 1.20 °C above average compared
to the record of +1.25 °C in 2009. Minima were
generally near average for northern New South
Wales, southern Queensland, the tropical north and
the inland Pilbara and Gascoyne districts of Western
Australia. Areas of the east and north between
northern New South Wales and the Kimberley
recorded minima up to 3 °C below average, most
broadly in the eastern Top End and western Victoria
District of the Northern Territory and across the
Kimberley in Western Australia.
Minimum temperatures during the first days of August
were generally near average across Australia. A high
pressure system over central Australia kept skies clear
and brought cooler-than-average minimum
temperatures across the north from the 4th, with cool
anomalies extending well down the eastern seaboard
on the 9th before contracting and returning to
generally near average by the 13th.

and mainland southeast on the 6th. The warm
anomalies in the southeast declined before the high
moved slowly eastward and extensive cloud crossed
southern Australia, continuing to keep nights
warmer-than-average in the southwest on the 7th,
with warm anomalies moving into eastern Australia by
the 12th. A few sites in the southwest of Western
Australia recorded their warmest August night on the
7th or 8th. A large area of the southwest recorded
temperatures more than 8 °C warmer than average
on the 8th, as did an area of South Australia at the top
of the Bight on the 9th.
Minimum temperatures were above average across
central Australia on the 14th, with warm anomalies
becoming more widespread through the centre and
inland subtropics before shifting focus into western
Queensland and the south of the Northern Territory
on the 17th, with temperatures more than 8 °C
warmer than average across a large part of this
region. As mid-level cloud continued streaming across
central Australia from the Indian Ocean, the north of
Australia experienced generally warmer-than-average
nights over the next few days, although by the 21st
and 22nd warm anomalies were mostly restricted to
the Kimberley and the Victoria District of the Northern
Territory.
Cool nights were recorded in South Australia on the
15th under a high pressure system, and on the central
eastern seaboard on the 16th as the high moved east.
Below-average minimum temperatures covered much
of inland Western Australia and central Australia under
a high pressure ridge on the 17th and also reached
into eastern Australia on the following night.
Night-time temperatures were generally below
average across southern Australia on the 20th and
21st, with parts of the eastern mainland recording
nights more than 6 °C cooler than average as a high
combined clear skies with south to southwesterly
winds. Temperatures were also below average for
northern New South Wales and Queensland south of
about Townsville on the 22nd and 23rd before
returning to near average over the following two
nights.
Nights were generally warmer than average across
southern Australia from the 23rd, with both unusual
night-time and daytime warmth spreading across
much of Australia in the last few days of the month.
Nights were particularly warm across the south of
Western Australia on the 26th, the southeastern
quarter of mainland Australia on the 29th, the eastern
seaboard on the 30th and southwest Western
Australia, the inland areas of the Northern Territory
and Queensland and adjacent parts of South Australia
and New South Wales on the 31st. A few locations in
Victoria and New South Wales recorded their
warmest August night between the 29th and 31st.

Rainfall
Area-averaged August rainfall was 10.1 mm; 46%
below average nationally. Rainfall was below average
for the broad sub-tropical band of Australia, and in the
lowest 10% of records for much of northern New
South Wales and southern and eastern Queensland.
Much of the tropical north recorded near-average
rainfall for this seasonally dry month, while light falls
resulted in above-average totals along parts of the
coast and Cape York Peninsula. The Northern Territory
and Queensland both recorded less than 5% of their
long-term average rainfall for the month. Rainfall was
near average for the greater southwest of Western
Australia and across the New South Wales – Victoria
border region, the Eyre Peninsula and greater
southeast of South Australia. Southern Gippsland and
the Western District of Victoria, the Lower Southeast
District of South Australia and most of Tasmania
recorded monthly totals in the highest 10% of
records. August was the fifth-wettest on record for
Tasmania as a whole and a number of stations in
Tasmania and southern Victoria had their wettest
August on record (see page 18).
A cold front associated with a double-centred low
southwest of Tasmania brought thunderstorms and
showers on 2 August and in the westerly airstream in
its wake. Falls of 15 mm to 50 mm were recorded
across western Tasmania in the 24 hours to 9 am on
the 3rd, with lighter falls across southern Victoria,
before a second cold front followed on the next day
bringing more substantial falls across Victoria and
southeast South Australia, and similar totals for
Tasmania.
On the night of the 4th, a slow moving cold front
associated with a deep low well south of the
continent approached southwest Western Australia,
before sweeping across the Bight and clearing the
southeast by the evening of the 6th. A well-developed
cloudband along the front and trailing it brought rain
over the southwest and southeast during the four
days to the 8th, with periods of heavy falls in northern
and western Tasmania on the evening of 5 August
causing some flooding. Western Tasmania and the
west of southwest Western Australia recorded totals
in excess of 50 mm over the four days, while totals
across southern Victoria and the greater alpine region
were somewhat lower.
A broad cloudband associated with a cold front
brought widespread falls across the Southwest Land
Division of Western Australia on the 7th and 8th,
before progressing eastward and bringing light
showers to the southeast and heavier falls over
northwest Tasmania into 9 August.
11
Monthly Weather Review - Australia - August 2013
A cold front brushed through southwest Western
Australia, bringing light falls on the 10th and 11th,
before the front and associated cloudband moved
across the Bight. Moderate falls were recorded in the
Alps and western Tasmania overnight on the 11th and
during the 12th, with further showers across the
southeast associated with troughs between this front
and a second cold front approaching the southwest.
The second front brought light falls to the southwest
before crossing Tasmania overnight on the 13th,
bringing heavy falls across the north and west and
resulting in flooding. Some flooding also resulted in
southwestern Victoria. Showers continued on the
14th across Tasmania and the eastern half of Victoria.
A cold front associated with a deep low in the
Southern Ocean crossed southwest Western
Australia on the 15th, bringing moderate falls about
the coast. The cold front crossed the Bight and
brought moderate to heavy rainfall across the Eyre
Peninsula and coastal southeast South Australia,
western and northeastern Victoria and northern areas
of Tasmania on the night of the 16th. Heavy falls
continued across western and northeastern Tasmania
on the following three days, with moderate falls in the
alpine region and southwestern Victoria, as a second
cold front followed and crossed into the southeast
late on the 18th.
Rain was again recorded across northern and western
Tasmania and the lower southeast on the 21st and
22nd as cloud associated with a complex frontal
system crossed the southeast.
Onshore flow around a high pressure system over
Australia brought rainfall to small areas around Cairns
and Innisfail in Queensland, with daily totals in the 24
hours to 9 am on 24 August covering a broad range
from around 10 mm to more than 100 mm north of
Cairns. Whyanbeel Valley, just north of Port Douglas,
recorded 115.6 mm, which was the highest daily total
for August.
A complex low pressure system and upper level
trough stalled against the coast of southwest
Western Australia on the afternoon of the 24th before
moving into the Bight on the 26th, bringing falls along
the west coast. A second cold front, which
approached the Western Australian coast on the 27th,
brought widespread good falls to the Southwest Land
Division and Southern Gascoyne. The front decayed
into a trough as the low pressure system continued
on into the Bight, but nonetheless brought light falls
to the Eyre Peninsula and surrounds late on the 28th,
and to Victoria and the alpine region on the night of
the 29th with higher totals across northern Tasmania
during the 29th and 30th. Western Tasmania also
received light falls under the influence of a number
passing weak cold fronts on the 25th and 27th.
Total rainfall in August 2013
Two last cold fronts for the month clipped southwest
Western Australia in the early hours of the 30th and
31st, bringing light to moderate falls along the
western coast.
The high pressure ridge was seldom disrupted across
the north of Australia during the month, bringing with
it clear settled conditions and dry weather, as is
typical of the northern dry season.

Total is the total precipitation for August 2013; a missing total indicates there is concern about the quality of some of the daily values. Avg is the long-term average total precipitation for August. Long-term average is only shown if there are sufficient years of
climate record available. Reports of zero precipitation are shown as “· ”. When a reading was accumulated over more than one day, “»” is shown on the days that are part of the accumulation. Not all observations are shown here. Data from many more sites
and for other times are available from our web site at www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/.
