in dire need of at least 15 2L pop
bottles for a Living Wall project in
our naturalized playground. The
plants are beginning to get leggy and
need to be planted as soon as possible to avoid damage. Please send it
what you have.
AR PARTY
Students have until noon on June 16 to
reach those final levels in Accelerated
Reading. We will be having our windup party at 2:15 p.m. that afternoon
where the last level prizes will be
awarded and the draws for the year
end prizes as well as the two Grand
Prizes of $100!!!

VIBE NEWS

Another school year is coming to a close and I continue to feel grateful for every day I get to spend at
Clandonald School. Clandonald students receive a multitude of programs each year and also benefit from
programs and events that we offer in Vermilion as well. Here are some of the things that your children
participated in this year: Creation Station, Games Day, Yoga, Just Say Hi, Pink Shirt Day, VIBE Day (grade
6), Mental Health Art Gala, Mental Health Week, and Relaxation Skills. The following grade levels participated in these VIBE programs:
Kindergarten: How to Fill a Bucket, Beautiful Oops, Building Mental Wellness for Children
Grade 1-3: Friendship, 1 Habits of Happy Kids
Grade 4-6: Hope, Respect and Responsibility, Cooking Club, My Attitude is Gratitude, Resilience and
Drug and Alcohol Awareness (in partnership with AHS Addictions and Mental Health)
Clandonald students did an amazing job this year learning, sharing, and practicing the skills taught in these
programs. I encourage you to ask your children about what we learn in class and have them teach you
some of the relaxation skills that we practice like calm breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and simple meditation where kids think about a place where they feel happy, safe, and loved. For a real treat, ask
them to teach you pizza massage! Thank you to the grade 5/6 classroom and Mrs. Beres for helping me
pilot the new gratitude program I developed just for our kids but that has since been shared with multiple
mental health capacity building projects and other schools in our area as well. Great job! Finally, thank
you to Miss McKinney and the kindergarten parents who decided to officially join in a VIBE partnership
this year. It was a special treat to be able to spend so much time with our kinder kids this year.
Have a wonderful, relaxing, and rejuvenating summer. I look forward to seeing you all in September.
FAKE INJURY DAY
Express your school spirit by joining
in on a fun day dressing up as the
walking wounded! A great story to
explain your injury is a bonus.
FRIDAY OUTINGS
On Friday, June 17 Mrs. Jackson and the grades 46 will be going golfing at the Vermilion golf course.
Be sure to dress for the weather and bring extra
water.
Miss McCormack will be taking the Religion class
to St. Columba to meet with Fr. Roger and tour
the church.
Both outings will be in the afternoon.
YEARBOOK
There are always so many great things going on at
Clandonald School! To capture some of the memories being made here we have decided to create a
yearbook. The book will be hardcover and professionally printed and bound. Each yearbook will cost
$35
and orders need to be in by June 27. They will
be distributed by the end of September 2016.

EMERALD AWARD WINNERS

“The Alberta Emerald Foundation recognizes and celebrates environmental achievements and stewardship in Alberta, establishing
an example of excellence for all to follow. By celebrating environmental excellence, the Alberta Emerald Foundation works to raise
the public’s awareness of the successful growth and improvement
in these areas, and to inspire positive involvement in the protection of our environment.”
The 25th Emerald Awards were held in Calgary on June 8, 2016.
Finalists in 12 categories are judged on environmental benefit and
outcomes, innovation, commitment, and outreach.
Clandonald School: Warriors of the Rainbow took home the award
in the category Education: School or Classroom. The Clandonald
School Warriors of the Rainbow have been recycling paper and
beverage containers, helping with the community clean-up, and enhancing our environment for
the last thirteen years. Two years ago we added composting, gardening, and made bluebird
houses. Last year we planted shrubs and apple trees, provided safe indoor plants in every classroom to improve air quality, and worked with our seniors’ club to learn various handicrafts, most
using scrap materials. Last spring we added two more raised garden beds to grow carrots for
healthy snacks. Our rain barrels helped with watering. We potted and sold spider plant babies,
and started flowers for our decorative pots. We used scrap materials to make sellable Christmas
crafts, installed bird feeders on the playground, and are planning a butterfly garden for this spring.
The grade 4 Social class has made 30-second commercials about proper disposal of household
hazardous waste. Our name reflects the First Nations' legend of the leaders who will come to restore the health of the Earth. According to the Cree legend, “Leaders will be those whose actions
speak the loudest, the ones that have demonstrated wisdom and courage and have proven that
they work for the benefit of all.”
Attending the Emerald Awards is truly an inspiring experience. Each
nominee is featured in a short video,
and the projects going on in Alberta
are amazing and inspiring. It was an
honour to be a finalist for the past
three years, but being recognized
this year as the top project in the Education: School or Classroom is a
wonderful validation of the hard work
our students have been doing for the
environment for the past 13 years. I
am immensely proud of the students
and staff who make up Clandonald
School’s Warriors of the Rainbow.
