Congratulations go to Robyn Farnell our Assistant Principal who has gained a promotion to the position of
principal of Tucker Road Bentleigh Primary School and will commence at her new school from the start of
Term 4! This is Robyn’s last week at Hampton and she is busily concluding many projects and preparing to
hand over ongoing ones to Anne Coburn who will be the acting Assistant Principal for Term 4.
Robyn has been the Assistant Principal at Hampton since 2008; during this time she has assumed responsibility
for student wellbeing, coordinated curriculum across the school, convened the Education Committee, been a
member of School Council and a member of the Finance Committee. Robyn has also played an active role at
the regional level leading various committees and projects involving mathematics and research into best
practice. In recent times, Robyn has had a few stints as Acting Principal and combined with her extensive
knowledge and experience as an Assistant Principal, she is very well prepared for the challenges ahead.
On behalf of the school community I wish Robyn the best of luck with this next phase in her career and hope
that she gains much satisfaction and enjoyment as Principal of Tucker Road.
Art Trail
It was lovely to see so many community members attending the annual Art Trail last Thursday night. Each of
the exhibition areas had parents and family members eagerly looking for their children’s
work and taking delight in celebrating the artistic talents of individuals. Viewing art work
shows an entirely different perspective on a child. It is lovely to see some who have
creative talents emerge or others who produce work displaying surprising skill and or
sensitivity in their interpretation of topic or concept.
The Year 5/6 self-portraits were an excellent example of this where the final product was
extremely impressive indeed, in some cases we had some very strong resemblances to the
artist and some very good use of brush technique – especially for the eyes and use of colour
– particularly in the background. I thoroughly enjoyed viewing the Year 3 dinosaurs too – I
have some displayed in my office at the moment.
I extend my congratulations to all our artists; I know that the children were justifiably
proud of their work. Special thanks and congratulations go to Marion Marks our Art
specialist who commenced work with the planning of the trail months ago and has been
preparing and storing children’s work for months to ensure that the final show truly
captured the artistic talents of our children.
The Kids on Canvas project coordinated by Di Thomas and Georgie Hill generated much
interest when the final products were auctioned on the night. Di and Georgie had an
industrious team of parents who did a magnificent job in working with the grades over a
number of weeks on Fridays. The children loved being involved in this project and their art
works were keenly contested at the auction. Finally many thanks go to parents who assisted
with set up, and with the food preparation, serving and clean up afterwards. The
Fundraising Committee under the leadership of Sarah Rowley and Kylie Jones managed this
task and did so with some generous spirited parents of the Year 5/6s who provided great
assistance.
The focus for the trail was on celebrating the children’s artistic talents. The Kids on Canvas
auction generated approximately $4,000 which is a fabulous outcome and will go towards
the basketball court project.
School Council News
Last night at the council meeting the iPad trial in Years 5/6 was carefully considered. The feedback we have
received has been very positive indeed.
Why the iPad?
The iPad caters for all learning styles through the multi-modal delivery of text, image, video and audio. The
accessibility features allow users to adjust settings to assist with vision, hearing, learning and physical/motor
difficulties.

Practical experience in becoming a digital citizen. We can make authentic connections to our teachings
on cyberbullying, effective online communication and Internet safety. Using the iPads gives us daily
practice and examples to use as significant teaching points.

Being a mobile device it provides each student regular access to both physical and online learning spaces
– there are no time or space limitations. This bridges the gap between school and home learning. The
portability makes it ideal for group work or investigating and collecting evidence at school.

The iPad has provided us with the bridge between a student’s desire to create something and having the
appropriate tools to create it. So far this year our students have become movie makers, podcasters and
eBook authors. Using Creative Book Builder our students published their fractured fairy tale as an
eBook, posted it to their blog and uploaded it to iBooks for not only their teacher to read and review but
their entire 5/6 cohort.

Students can easily document their learning by either working live or uploading image, video and audio
to create a multi-media digital portfolio on their personal blog. Their audience then immediately goes
from 1 (teacher) to 27 (entire class). Depending on the sensitivity of the material students could elect to
share their work globally, creating a sense of ownership and pride in their achievements.

Our students are engaged and motivated learners. Teaching and learning with the iPad means we are
speaking to students in a language they love and are interested in.
Why move to a permanent 1:1 BYOD?

1:1 is about learning not technology. The iPad is the tool to be used to take learning further than it could
without. It needs to be by our students' side so it can be called upon whenever the learning experience
requires it. 1:1 is about personalizing and differentiating learning, whilst having access to just in time
information, resources and tools to help students learn in the best possible way.

Students who BYOD see their iPad as their personal learning device. They can set it up to suit their
learning needs and confidently store and save their work without the fear of it being deleted by another
student.

Increases independence and self-responsibility.




Needs to be an expectation rather than the option it has been throughout this trial period. Other schools such
as Middle Park PS and Brighton Beach PS that place the BYOD as an expectation have adoption rates of
98% and 97%.
Our adoption rate during the trial was between 50-60%. This has meant that if our teachers wanted their
class to go 1:1 they would have to adhere to the timetable we needed to create to cater for students who
required a school iPad.

expectations of the past. To meet this challenge schools must be transformed in ways that will enable
students to acquire the sophisticated thinking, flexible problem solving, collaboration and communication

Whist delivering the most up to date and engaging content to develop literacy and numeracy skills, we
focus on developing the following skills necessary to thrive in the 21st century. Having the iPad available
to students all the time in a 1:1 environment simply gives us more opportunities to use the tools that
promote, encourage and cultivate these skills.
We have decided to run with the Bring Your Own iPad in Year 5/6 next year. Detailed information will be
distributed to parents of children in Grades 4 and 5 ie next year’s 5/6s, very early in Term 4.
Year 5/6 Production
On Monday this week our 5/6s recorded a CD of all songs in the production of Rindercella and had photographs
taken today with the whole cast in costume and wearing makeup, apart from the lead up with rehearsals
increasing in intensity and excitement as we approach the opening night on Monday 13 October. The atmosphere
was full of excitement and some level of anticipation in the hall today watching the entire cast today assemble for
the photographs. The Rindercella production is going to be a highlight in Term 4.
Assembly Performances
Yesterday we had two impressive performances which were vastly different but both entertaining.
Congratulations go to the Boys Band called ‘No Direction’ comically introduced by Harrison Dart with band
comprising Xavier Browne, Charlie Boyle Bryant, Lachie Briggs, Hamish Allan, Sam Stewart and Gary
Kruger who performed the tune ‘That’s what makes you beautiful’ made famous by One Direction. The boys
were in costume to promote the 5/6 production of Rindercella. The boys sang and danced confidently despite
being outside in windy conditions and not having individual microphones and still managed to engage the
audience.
This item was followed by the Grade 1 Bollywood dancers involving a large group of girls and a smaller group
of boys who showcased their latest routine with their capacity to dance in synchrony and move with energy. Well
done to the Boys Band and the Bollywood dancers.

Kiwanis Build up Grades (BUG Awards)
Lee Rakers from the local Kiwanis Club attended assembly yesterday to present awards to two children in Grade
1 who have made excellent progress during the term. I extend congratulations to:

COMING EVENTS
For school holiday events try Bayside & Kingston libraries. Library at the Dock is the new
library recently opened in the Docklands. The Little Bookroom also has holiday events
including author visits and craft workshops. Jacqueline Harvey (Pearlie) will visit there and
also the Ulysses bookshop in Sandringham. The “Once Upon a Time” art exhibition has been
extended at the State Library and features artwork from some of our favourite picture books.
Lynley Dodd: A Retrospective (Hairy McLairy books) continues at the Mornington Peninsula
Regional Gallery until Sunday.
