The August 5 change of command ceremony at 14 Wing Greenwood was
all about family.
Out-going Colonel Bill Seymour thanked family – “mine and yours,”
referring also to his personnel’s families – “first, not last.
“You – we – have asked a lot of our families in the past couple of years.
They make it possible to serve our country, and they remind us of why we
come to work every day.”
In-coming Colonel Jim Irvine also opened with another, very personal,
reference to family.
“My father, who passed away in 1980 when I was 16 – today would have
been his 81st birthday. My father is on parade with me today.”
The ceremony took place with 261 Canadian Forces and other military
members on parade. The base’s heavy equipment – from the helicopter and
planes to firefighting rigs – lined the back of the square, and both the 14
Wing Pipes & Drums and Brass & Reed bands provided the music. A fly
past of the base’s aircraft highlighted the work Seymour has done and Irvine
is expected to continue, according to special guest Major-General J.A.J.
Parent, Commander 1 Canadian Air Division.

Hercs in Afghanistan: First in, last out
By Captain Nicole
Meszaros, Air Wing
public affairs officer
“We really enjoy flying in
Afghanistan and are proud
to be part of one of the first
operational units here in
theatre,” said Captain Shane
Loder, a CC-130J Hercules
pilot with Task Force Canuck.
“Our missions continue to
be diversified, and the extreme
temperatures, mountainous
terrain and austere airports
that we operate from make the
flying here both challenging
and gratifying.”
Task Force Canuck —
more formally known as
the Tactical Airlift Unit —
stood up at Camp Mirage in
January 2002 as the Tactical
Airlift Detachment or TAL
Det. Deployed on Operation
APOLLO, the operation
that brought Canada into
the international campaign
against terrorism, TAL Det
began flying into Afghanistan
to support the deployment
of the 3rd Battalion Princess
Patricia’s Canadian Light
Infantry Battle Group in
Kandahar Province. Under
various names, the Hercs

the southwest Asia theatre of
operations ever since.
“Our allies know that the
Canadian Hercules team is
always ready to take on any
mission, and they call on us
regularly to meet operational
flight requirements,” said
Loder. “We are proud of the
reputation we have earned
throughout a nearly 10-year
period.”
Despite the longevity
of Hercules’ operations in
Afghanistan, the crews
continue to break new ground.
During a re-supply mission
July 14, Loder and his crew
used the Containerized
Delivery System to air-drop
20 pallets of supplies — some
26,000 pounds or 11,818.2
kg — to ISAF troops on the
ground. It was the largest
operational air-drop Canadians
have ever conducted from a
Hercules aircraft, proving the
Hercules crews of Task Force
Canuck are willing to test their
mettle even as they approach
their final months of operations
from Kandahar Airfield.
“The airmen and airwomen
who contributed to CC-130
operations in the Afghanistan
theatre can be proud of all
of their outstanding efforts,”
said Colonel Al Meinzinger,
commander of the Joint Task
Force Afghanistan Air Wing.
“Throughout the years, the unit
has displayed an incredible
level of flexibility, always

were mission-ready. The
Tactical Airlift Unit has earned
the reputation as the ‘airlifter
of choice’ within ISAF.”
Although the Joint Task
Force Afghanistan Air Wing is
scheduled to cease operations
in mid-August, the Tactical
Airlift Unit will keep flying
ISAF missions until midNovember.
“Though not the Tactical
Airlift Unit’s official unit
motto, ‘First in, last out’ is
captured on unit badges as
no slogan could be more
befitting for this team,” said
Meinzinger. “They will be the
last members of the Joint Task

to operate in Afghanistan as a
formed unit — once again ably
representing the Air Force in

Unit’s internationally stellar
reputation is reflected in its long
list of significant operational
achievements. Since the
Canadian Forces commenced
operations in Afghanistan in
2002, the CC-130 Hercules
team has completed more than
4,100 missions to deliver some
57 million kg of cargo and
207,000 passengers throughout
the theatre of operations.

from 2007 to 2009.
Concurrent with the
assumption of command Task
Force Naples personnel and
functions were incorporated
into the new structure of Task
Force Libeccio. Task Force
Naples was responsible for
coordinating the participation
of all Canadian Task Forces

“The task I was given was
extremely rewarding in that
Task Force Naples worked
very hard at providing support
and sustainment to the air
component of Operation
MOBILE, and to Task Force
CHARLOTTETOWN,
patrolling the waters off the
coast of Libya,” said Colonel
Paul Ormsby, commander
of Task Force Naples. “The
team here demonstrated its
professionalism, excellence
and teamwork everyday
and this is why it was so
successful.
“As the Task Force Naples
team prepares to join Task
Force Libeccio in a single,
unified Task Force, I know
their record of excellence will
continue uninterrupted.”
“The short notice
deployment of most CF
personnel on Operation
MOBILE is a testament to
the professionalism and ‘can
do’ attitude of our personnel,
and their leadership has done
much to form a cohesive
task force that our coalition
partners can depend on - now
and into the future,” said
Joyce. “I look forward to
commanding and leading the
task force and continuing the
Canadian Forces’ fine work.”

Canadian Forces’ participation

Marking a milestone
Legion celebration chance to thank vets for Afghanistan service
By Sara Keddy, Managing
editor
Jim Desmond remembers
his days on tour in Egypt
in 1978, when he would
line up at a ham radio and
make contact with his wife
halfway around the world in
Greenwood.
“If the radio came open, I’d
take it and ask the wife how
the kids were, that kind of
thing,” he says.
Desmond retired as a service
corps driver, and knows what
time away from home and
family can mean to a member
of the Canadian Forces.
Now past-president of the
Kingston Legion, Desmond
is chairing a committee
of Legion representatives
from Kingston, Berwick and
Kentville branches to host
one of the national Royal
Canadian Legion’s August
20 Afghanistan Veterans
Appreciation Days.
“Words are not enough to
show how grateful we are,”
says Dominion president
Patricia Varga. “We know
Kingston Legion past president Jim Desmond and
branch member Master Warrant Officer Rod Chubbs,
who served in Afghanistan in 2009 with the Military
Police, encourage military and community members
to help the national Legion recognize the dedication,
work and sacrifice Canadian Forces personnel have
made over the last decade in Afghanistan.

there are many troops still
serving overseas in this
mission, but we believe
that the end of this combat
phase is a great opportunity
to recognize and thank our
troops for what they’ve
achieved so far.”
Afghanistan veterans and
their families will be special
guests and each veteran
will receive a gift and will
be offered a free, one-year
Legion membership.
Master Warrant Officer
Rod Chubbs says the
Legion’s efforts are fantastic,
and should be appreciated
by military members and
the community. For him,
finishing an eight-month
tour in Afghanistan in 2009
as the sergeant major for both
the international Military
Police company and the
Canadian headquarters was
a different experience than
his own past tours in Cyprus
and Bosnia.
“The communication is
there – unlimited now, but
it’s just as hard for families.
And, all tours are dangerous
– the elements are always
there, but Afghanistan was
a little different,” Chubbs
says. “Canada has one of the
best welfare programs in the
world, but you still miss the
little things.”
For him, it was playing and

Aldershot opens its doors
Camp Aldershot held its 5th open house August 6, welcoming
over 2,000 people from the local area and across Nova Scotia

The open house is designed to show the local community
what role Camp Aldershot fulfills for the Canadian Forces.
“Understanding what happens in Camp Aldershot and why
is critical to being an integral part of both the business and
local community. Any opportunity we have to provide that
information is regarded as an important occasion,” Major
Troy Kennedy, camp commander, says.
Camp Aldershot received support from other Army units

The long course (a 50-metre
pool) Atlantic championships
were held in Halifax July
7 to 10. The Wolfville
Tritons Swim Club posted an
impressive third place overall
finish, with a contingent of 18
Tritons.
Swimming with the
Tritons in the 12 & under age
category, Eveline Choquette
won a gold medal in the 200
metres Individual Medley
(IM) and four silver medals
in the 1,500m freestyle, 200m
breaststroke, 200m butterfly
and the 400m Individual
Medley. She also earned a fifth
place in the 200m backstroke.
During the four-day meet, she
broke four club records, in
the 1,500m freestyle, 200m
breaststroke, 400m IM and the
200m IM.
Nine Tritons now head to
the six-day national meet in
Montreal later in August,
including Choquette, seeded
18 th in Canada in her best
stroke, the 200m breaststroke.
“All of our swimmers
had a great weekend,” said
Tritons’ head coach Chris
Stone. “They’ve been working
hard since September, so to
see them earn the recognition
of a top-three team finish and
beating out several larger teams
to do it is a fitting reward.”

Bantam bronze
The Nova Scotia Bantam girls’ baseball team made history in
July, winning the bronze medal at the national championships
in North York, Ontario. They are the first female team from
N.S. to ever win a medal at the national level. Going into the
game with a 3-2 record and playing in 30 degree temperatures,
the girls were confident and focused. It was a very impressive
game: the girls did not make a single error and beat Alberta
10-0 after five innings. Three Valley girls have been part of
the team for the past three years: Jillian Stymest from the
Kingston area and Jenna Jackson and Kali McMullin, both
from the Kentville area. Jackson was named Catcher of the
Tournament, and all three girls won game MVPs. Pictured
are Stymest, left, Baseball Nova Scotia’s Female Player of
the Year in 2010; McMullin and Jackson.

Minor hockey players
score - with Orr
From left are Courtney Boone; Bobby Orr and Ryan Scholte.
Two local hockey players,
Ryan Scholte (Greenwood) and
Courtney Boone (Kingston), had
the opportunity of a lifetime as
they took to the ice with Bobby
Orr in Halifax July 29 and 30.
The pair of Greenwood Minor
Hockey eight-year-olds were
randomly selected, along with
75 other Nova Scotia Minor
Hockey players, to participate
in the Chevrolet Safe and Fun
Hockey Festival at Dalhousie
University. The two-day festival,
hosted by Bobby Orr, consisted
Submitted of on-ice instruction, team
building and off-ice activities
geared towards promoting
respect and responsibility in
the game. From stick handling
rubber chickens across the ice to
fun, in-class, crayon assignments
on hockey responsibility, these
young players had two days of
non-stop hockey fun.
Not to be left out, attending
parents also had the privilege
to meet Orr and take part in
his seminar designed to help
effectively communicate the
safe and fun philosophy of the
game. Judging by the ear to ear
grins of both the players on the
ice and the parents in the stands,
all involved were thrilled by the
experience and the opportunity
to meet one of hockey’s greatest
players and ambassadors.

Albert Johnson, co-chairman of the Kinsmen Club
of Mid-Annapolis Valley’s TV Bingo project, recently
presented cheques for $7,922 and $100 to Cathy
Dempsey. August 3, Dempsey won the cookie jar prize
on the first of four weekly games played on Kinsmen
TV Bingo, seen each Wednesday on EastLink Television Channel 13. Kinsmen use the funds from this
project for many worthwhile community needs.
The 14 Wing Greenwood
Skateboard Union will meet
August 24 at 2:30 p.m. to
make decisions on how to
spend a grant, and pick a
day for a community bottle
drive.
This club is opened to
anyone between the ages
of nine and 18, but anyone
under nine may join,
provided a parent or guardian
(18 or older) is present when
they visit the skate park.
This includes both BMX
users and skateboard users.
Membership is $15 a year,
$12 for each additional
child. All registration dues
go towards upgrades to the
park. Membership forms are
available at Limitless Skate
and Snow in the Greenwood
Mall, and at the 14 Wing
Community Centre. Your
completed form must be

submitted to the community
centre, where you will be
given a receipt for your
payment.
The club, in partnership
with Limitless Skate and
Snow, allows users of the
park to provide feedback
on where grant funding
should be spent, and sets the
direction for the park. Other
benefits of membership
include discounts on entry
fees to events, such as the
Wing Welcome competition
September 10. Plus, we
are trying to organize
skateboarding lessons
for those who would like
to learn how to skate. In
addition, by forming this
club, we improve chances to
be approved for additional
grants and also improve the
success of our fundraising
initiatives, since we will
have a group of committed
members dedicated to
helping improve our park.
If you are interested in
joining the club, contact
Eric MacKenzie at 765–

the August 24 meeting at

Centre conference room.

Diversity is essential to the vision, mission, and strategic direction of the Department of Health and Wellness and the health
system at large. The Government of Nova Scotia has an Employment Equity Policy which applies to the appointment of members
of Boards governing the health system of Nova Scotia. Our goal is to have District Health Authority Boards that are representative
of our communities. We welcome applications from Aboriginal People, African Nova Scotians, other Racially Visible Persons,
Persons with Disabilities, and Women in positions or occupations where they are under-represented. We value the representation
of citizens of all ages.
If you are a member of one of the equity groups you are encouraged to self-identify, on either your application, covering letter or
your resume.

its recent ticket auction and

Thanks to Kathleen, Cookie

months soliciting donations,

Thanks to Dale, Norma and

setting up and working at the
yard sale all day.
We would like to express a
special thank you to all those
businesses and individuals
who donated articles and
cash donations. The sales

Fun By The Numbers
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as
a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve
a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row,
column and box. Each number can appear only once in
each row, column and box. You can figure out the order
in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric
clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers
you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

14 Wing Library
Serving those who read
By Judy McCool and Joanne Sealby
If you are new to the area, the 14 Wing
Greenwood Library welcomes you, and hopes you
will drop by and sign up for a library membership.
The library is open to all; military and
civilian. We have a large selection of fiction
and non-fiction books, videos, and DVDs for
all ages, and internet-accessible computers.
As of August 1,, the library is charging a
membership fee for those who do not have a
recreation pass: $5 per year for a single, $10
for a family. All of the funds collected for
memberships will go towards the purchase of
new books.
As we look towards the end of summer,
French day campers enrol
in junior spy academy
we encourage you to check out the latest
purchases and donations. A few of our new
books include Smokin Seventeen by Janet
Evanovich, Her Daughter’s Place by Francine
Rivers, Sisterhood Everlasting by Ann
Brashares, The Jefferson Key by Steve Barry,
A Dance with Dragons by George Martin and
Carte Blanche, the new James Bond novel by
Jeffrey Deaver. Come in and check out the
rest of the “hot off the press” releases.
Also; we are always open to receive any
donations of good “pre-read” books others
may enjoy. Do not forget to check out the book
sale room’s great selection of books for sale.
Keep reading, and we will see you in the
library!
When I grow up…
This past week at 14 Wing day camp was
pretty exciting.
Monday, we had half our campers head over
to the base to try out the flight simulator, while
the other half had an awesome freeze dance
competition. Swimming was rained out, so
we rented the movie Wall-E and did some fun
coloring crafts.
Tuesday, the Military Police came in to talk
about how they make our community safe, and
they were able to answer lots of questions the
campers had.
Wednesday, the second half of the campers
Page 19
August 15, 2011
got to go to the flight simulator while the
other half had a chance to show off their
dancing skills.
Thursday, we had a visit from Stacey, a
dietician, who was able to teach us about
healthy eating.
Friday, we had the SAR Techs come over
and do a jump from the airplanes on to the
Apple Bowl field.
Day campers would like to thank all our
special guests! We all learned so much and,
hopefully, have a better idea of what we want
to be when we grow up!
French day campers put
on their best disguises last
week as they explored many
different spy themed activities.
Community centre campers
began the week creating their
own spy identity cards, passports
and spy clubs. They also made
some spy masks and disguises.
Tuesday, campers had the
opportunity to “fly” an Aurora
plane in the 14 Wing flight
simulator. Each camper had
a turn as co-pilot, flying over
Kingston and Greenwood.
Wednesday was filled
with activities, including an
obstacle course competition.
Towards the end of the
week, we made structures for
an egg drop competition and
played mystery games.
Next week is a holidaythemed week, and campers
will be exploring many
different holidays, from
Christmas to Halloween.
