Lady Chargers win
third straight title
by Tom Chillemi
The Middlesex High Lady
Chargers clinched its third
straight
Tidewater
District
regular season championship on
Tuesday with a 55-43 win over
visiting King William on Senior
Night.
Senior Sharnell Burnett again
led MHS with 24 points, including 6 of 8 free throws.
Junior point guard Patricia
Price, free of her early-season
injury, added 14 points.
Senior center Dannie Green
was good for 5 points, and senior
Mecca Bowens tallied 4. Senior
Joy Burrell contributed 3 points
and Ashley Robinson had 2.
Senior Kashae Beverly was
injured in the first quarter and
left for most of the game but
returned in the fourth quarter for
limited action.
Lady Charger coach William
Griffin, basking in his third
straight district title, said he
wasn’t concerned about trailing
7-4 after the opening quarter. “It
was a tough game. King William
is always going to be tough. But
the main thing is I started my
seniors. With two playing out of
position, we really didn’t score
that much, but we put pressure
on them and that’s what I wanted
to do.
“I was never worried,” said
Griffin. “They had a run and I
expected that. But I knew my
girls were going to come back.”
Griffin said he knew when
Patricia Price and Ashley Robinson got in the game “it was going
to be whole different story.”
And it was. Middlesex put up
21 points in the second quarter
while holding the Lady Cavaliers
to 9.
The Lady Chargers racked up
another 20 points in the third
period to King Williams’s 15.
The Lady Chargers suffered
21 turnovers. “We were rushing
a little bit,” said Griffin. “They
wanted this game so bad and
they knew if we won this one we
had the district title. But our goal
is to go 8-0.”
The Lady Chargers (5-0, 134) are at King William tonight
for a 7:30 game. “We’re going
to make up for those turnovers.
We’re ready, we’re ready,” said
Griffin.
For King William, Kelly
White had 15 points and Tanika
Junior All-District point guard
Patricia Price has recovered
from an ankle injury. She
scored 14 points Tuesday
night.
Moore added 11.
On Monday the varsity girls
play at King and Queen at 6 p.m.
There is no JV game.
On Tuesday, February 15, the
Lady Chargers finish their regular season at Mathews.
With the exception of the King
and Queen game, JV basketball
games begin at 6 p.m. and are
followed by the varsity games at
7:30 p.m.

the second half and outscored
King William 16-2 in the third

contributed 7 with one 3-pointer;
and Brad Bess, Keith Beverley
and Langston Washington all

quarter lead and led 27-16 at the

the third quarter and outscored
the Blue Devils 15-12, and then

Christchurch students to present
‘Man of La Mancha’ Feb. 24-26
Those who have enjoyed
Merridee Michelsen’s past
productions—Godspell (2003)
and South Pacific (2004)—are
in for yet another treat, as the
Christchurch School Fine Arts
Department presents “Man of
La Mancha” later this month.
Although this musical is
complex and emotionally rich,
Michelsen seems to be at her
creative best when presented
with just such a challenge. Says
Michelsen, “This musical speaks
to my heart. We think you’ll find
it transformational.”
Assisting Michelsen in this
colossal effort is are musical
director Henry Selby and technical director David Voss. Man
of La Mancha, with music by
Dale Wasserman and lyrics by
Joe Darion and Mitch Leigh,
was the biggest hit of the 1965
Broadway season, taking Tony
Awards for best musical, score
and libretto. The musical combines tragedy, romance, comedy
and adventure. It is complex—it
is a play within a play, and it
does address some serious issues
(there is some adult content).
Set during the Spanish Inquisition, it tells the tale of Miguel
de Cervantes, a poor novelist
and actor thrown into prison,
charged with a crime against the
church. While in prison, Cervantes spins a tale of championing the oppressed and righting
the wrongs of the world. The
audience will enjoy such familiar musical favorites as “The
Impossible Dream,” “Dulcinea”
and “Man of La Mancha.”

Soderlund is
RW-C Artist
of the Month
Sarah
Soderlund
of
Kilmarnock is Rappahannock
Westminster-Canterbury’s Artist
of the Month for February. Most
of the 15 paintings in the exhibit
will be large and painted with
watercolors or acrylics.
Soderlund’s
mother
and
grandmother were artists, and
she attended art school after high
school graduation. A year later
she transferred to Kent State
University and resumed painting upon moving to the Northern
Neck 13 years ago. She joined the
Rappahannock Art League and
took classes at Grace Episcopal
Church from Bernice Neuman.
She sold her first painting 10
years ago to another artist.
“That feeling never goes
away,” said Soderlund. “There is
nothing like it. It is our version
of applause, especially when it’s
from someone you’re not related
to.”
In a book of ideas and sketches
for future paintings, she also
keeps magazine or catalog
pictures clipped for intriguing
use of color. She exhibits at the
Studio Gallery, was the gallery’s
volunteer manager for more
than two years, and is part of an
experimental group that paints
there twice monthly.
She plans to attend the Springmaid Beach Watercolor Workshop this month in Myrtle Beach
to study YUPO with George
James, who has perfected the
technique. YUPO is extruded
plastic used primarily in the
graphic arts industry. Its slickness prevents absorption of the
paint.
Soderlund won a blue ribbon
at the most recent RAL Labor
Day Show for her YUPO painting, “Leaning on a Bent Reed.”

Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR)
seek written and oral comments from interested
persons on the development of a Total Maximum
Daily Load (TMDL) for fecal coliform bacteria in
shellfish propagation waters located in Middlesex
County, Virginia.
All impaired segments are located wholly within
Middlesex County with the exception of the
Piankatank River segments, these are in part located
in Mathews County. These areas are described in the
following publications:
1) Growing Area 27 as described in Virginia
Department of Health, Notice and Description of
Shellfish Area Condemnation Numbers 90 and
202, Rappahannock River: Mud and Parrotts
Creek, effective 27 April 1989 and 8 October 1996
respectively.
2) Growing Area 28 as described in Virginia
Department of Health, Notice and Description of
Shellfish Area Condemnation Numbers 127 and
177, Rappahannock River: LaGrange and Robinson
Creeks, effective 11 June 1996 and 28 May 1997
respectively.
3) Growing Area 29 as described in Virginia
Department of Health, Notice and Description
of Shellfish Area Condemnation Number 42,
Rappahannock River: Urbanna Creek, effective 17
September 1993.

and170, Piankatank River, Lower, Wilton, Healy and
Cobbs Creeks, effective 2 March 1993, 3 March 1997,
and 2 march 1993 respectively.
The affected water body segments are identified in
Virginia’s 1998 303(d) TMDL Priority List and Report
as impaired due to violations of the State’s water
quality standard for fecal coliform bacteria in shellfish
waters. Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act and
§62.1-44.19:7.C of the Code of Virginia, require DEQ
to develop TMDLs for pollutants responsible for each
impaired water contained in Virginia’s 303(d) TMDL
Priority List and Report.
The final public meeting on the development of the
fecal coliform TMDL’s will be held on February 17,
2005 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cooks Corner Office
Complex, 2893 General Puller Highway, Saluda,

Meeting to address need
for Boys and Girls Club
Are you interested in bringing
a Boys and Girls Club to your
community?
Due to a high level of interest
of establishing a Boys and Girls
Club in the Middle Peninsula
and Northern Neck region, the
Rural Virginia United Coalition
(RVUC) is holding a “Boys &
Girls Club Task Force” meeting
on Thursday, February 17, at 5:
30 p.m. This meeting is open to
any individuals or organizations
that have a strong desire to assist
in the process of opening a Boys
and Girls Club in their community. The meeting will be held at
the Prevention Services Office
at 872 General Puller Highway
(Route 33) in Saluda.
The RVUC is the umbrella
organization created to unify
and strengthen the ten Middle
Peninsula and Northern Neck
Prevention Alliances (counties of Essex, Gloucester, King
and Queen, King William,
Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex,
Northumberland, Richmond and
Westmoreland) in their efforts
to prevent youth substance use
(alcohol, tobacco and other
drugs), violence, school failure,
juvenile delinquency and teen
pregnancy.
Collaboration within each
county assists in bringing science-based prevention programs
to local organizations. The
RVUC provides technical assistance as well as resources to
representatives of schools, local
government, faith-based and
community groups, and grassroots organizations within this
region. A wide range of prevention videos and print resources
can be found in the newly created library located in the Saluda
office.
The RVUC operates in partnership with the Prevention
Services Division of the Middle
Peninsula-Northern Neck Community Services Board.
The RVUC fosters collaboration between community groups
through meetings, trainings,
workshops, recognition awards,
inter-county gatherings and conferences. Using environmental
strategies, we aim to change the
social norms associated with
unhealthy behaviors. Alcohol,
tobacco and other drug awareness projects are conducted to
help promote healthy behaviors.
Youth trainings are used to
create strong leaders to advocate
for positive peer pressure.
If you are interested in attending the Boys & Girls Club Task
Force meeting and need directions, call Lynn Jaeger at (804)
758-9398 or toll free at 888PREV-550. Additional information about the RVUC can be

Auxiliary boating courses offered
A busy year of public education has been planned for U.S.
Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla
33 in Kilmarnock.
Flotilla commander Jerry
Hawley notes, “Boating safety
training is a keystone mission of
the unit. Our members are committed to the goal of reducing
boating accidents and improving
boating skills through a comprehensive program of public
education made available to all
members of our community.”
Larry Uhlfelder is the flotilla
staff officer for public education in 2005. He will be leading
a range of courses suitable for all
skill levels from novices to experienced boaters. The instructors
for all courses are experienced
boaters themselves who understand local conditions and what
you need to know about boating safety, navigation and legal
requirements.
“America’s Boating Course”
is an eight-hour course designed
to appeal to hunters, anglers,
personal watercraft operators
and other boaters who cannot
find the time for a more comprehensive course. “Boating Safely”
will be offered twice: Saturday,
April 23, and Saturday, June 4.
The course covers an introduction to boating, boating laws,
personal safety equipment, safe
boat handling, navigation, boating problems, trailering, carrying
hunting gear or weapons in a
boat, fishing from a boat, waterskiing and PWC safety.
Both Boating Skills and Seamanship and America’s Boating
Course satisfy the Virginia law
requiring certificates for 14 and
15 year old personal watercraft
operators.
“Navigating With GPS” will
be offered on Saturday, May 7,
from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This
course is designed for boaters
desiring to better understand
their GPS equipment, its operation, limitations and how to use
it more effectively. Setting and
using waypoints is also covered.
“Boating for First Mates” is a
one-day course to be offered on
Saturday, May 21. It is designed
for the boater who may not be the
captain but wants to understand
boating at a higher level and
know what to do should the captain become incapacitated.
“Basic Coastal Navigation”
will introduce the advanced
boater to methods used to safely
pilot a boat. It starts on September 15 and runs for four weeks
on Tuesday and Thursday evenings through October 6. Topics
include the earth’s coordinate
system and how to use it for
navigation, compass variation
and deviation, the nautical chart,
plotting instruments, maintaining a dead reckoning plot, lines
of position and obtaining a fix.
All course sessions will be
at the Lancaster Community
Library on School Street in
Kilmarnock. Some of the courses
include a fee to cover the cost of
materials.
For information, or to enroll,
contact Larry Uhlfelder at (804)

Master Gardeners to offer
’water gardening‘ clinic
The Middlesex Master Gardeners are offering a clinic for
the general public on “water
gardening” at 9:30 a.m. on
February 26 at the Church of
the Visitation in Topping.
The seminar will be taught
by Barb and Gary Rudolph of
Petersburg. They teach Master
Gardener classes in water gardening, landscaping, and trees
and shrubs.
In addition to these subjects,
their garden interests include
shade gardening and landscaping (adding permanent elements to the landscape). They
have also written and provided
photographs for a regional gardening magazine.
The
Rudolphs
have
requested if anyone has a
particular question regarding
water gardening, bog gardening or managing wet areas
they can e-mail them directly
at <[email protected]>
prior to the clinic, so they
can include answers to these
questions in their presentation.
Please use water garden questions as the subject line.

Extension Office at (804) 7584120.
‘Ancient Life of the Bay’
to be VIMS lecture topic
The VIMS After Hours Lecture Series will present “The
Ancient Life of the Chesapeake
Bay” on Thursday, February 24,
at 7 p.m.
The landscape, climate, and
life in the Chesapeake region
have changed drastically since
the formation of the Appalachian Mountains about 250
million years ago. Dr. Gerald
Johnson will take the audience
through the history of life as
North America was torn from
Africa and Eurasia creating the
Atlantic Ocean, as sea level rose
and fell over the last 150 million
years, and as climates warmed
and cooled following the “Age
of Dinosaurs.”
Call (804) 684-7846 for reservations and information.
Funding for this public
series is provided in part by the
CBNERR and CCRM programs
at VIMS.

Woodland management seminar is Feb. 19
Making decisions about how
to manage a forest can challenge
even the most experienced natural
resource manager. There are so
many questions to answer about
what does the landowner want
to achieve? Does she/he own the
property as an investment or do
they own it for purely aesthetic
reasons but want enough income
to cover the taxes? What is the
need for cash flow? Then there
is all the technical knowledge
needed to understand the dynamics of the forests and what land
is best suited for hardwoods or
pines.
To help land owners and natu-
ral resource managers answer
these questions, the Virginia
Sustainable Forestry Initiative
Committee developed a series
of short courses. Tidewater
Resource Conservation and
Development Council is hosting
the Introduction to Woodland
Management on Saturday, February 19, at Whitcomb Lodge near
Gloucester Courthouse. Topics
included in the session are
Getting to Know Your Woods,
Establishing Your Objectives
and Getting Professional Help,
Financial Assistance, Land Use
Conservation Strategies, Forest
Ecology and Wildlife Manage-

Featured speakers include
David Milby and Rich Steensma
from the Virginia Department of
Forestry; Mike Rowland, Jim
Vadas, John Magruder and Paul
Verbyla, forestry consultants;
Rebecca McCoy, an accountant;
and Phil West, wildlife biologist
with the Virginia Department of
Game and Inland Fisheries.
The class is designed for
the landowners with 5 acres or
more of forestland and resource
managers. Professionals such as
attorneys, accountants and real
estate brokers who have clients
with forestland have found the
class valuable in improving their
understanding of the implications of forest management.
The workshop provides eight
hours of Category 1 Continuing Forestry Education credits
as approved by the Society of
American Foresters or education credits in Virginia’s SHARP
Logger Education Program.
The class is sponsored by
Virginia Tech College of Natural Resources Department of
Forestry Virginia Cooperative
Extension, the Virginia Forestry
Association Sustainable Forestry
Task Force, the Virginia Department of Forestry and, on a local
level, the Tidewater Resource
Conservation and Development
Council.
The registration is $40 per
person or $50 for two sharing
one set of materials. Registration
is at 8 a.m. with the class starting
at 8:30 a.m. and continuing until
5 p.m. Lunch is included.

is donating $2,000 to The Campaign for Community Health.
The donation will be used to
help the hospital continue to provide high quality medical care
and will go towards the replacement of the current CT scanner. The existing scanner was

State superintendent of public
instruction Dr. Jo Lynne DeMary
will speak at Rappahannock
We s t m i n s t e r - C a n t e r b u r y ’s
Viewpoints 2005 on Monday,
February 14, at 11 a.m. A luncheon reception will follow.
Dr. DeMary was appointed to
the top position at the Virginia
Department of Education by
Gov. Jim Gilmore in June 2000
and was reappointed by Gov.
Mark Warner in April 2002. She
served as acting superintendent
from December 1991 until her
first appointment.
She has served 35 years in
Virginia’s public school system,
as teacher, principal, elementary
school supervisor, director of
special education, and assistant
superintendent for instruction
at the state level. She is the first
woman to serve as Virginia’s
superintendent.
“The success of public schools
depends upon the support of
many people — the governor,
members of the General Assembly, school administrators, teachers, parents, community leaders
and the taxpayers of Virginia,”
notes Dr. DeMary at the Virginia Department of Education
website.
“I am committed to keeping
open lines of communication as
we work together to increase the
educational opportunities available to our students,” continues
the message. “The progress we
have made since 1995 demonstrates that all children can learn
and achieve and that all schools
can meet high standards of performance.”
She stresses Virginia’s commitment to the Standards of
Learning and notes that Virginia
students’ SAT-1 and ACT scores
have risen significantly since the
SOL program was initiated. The
state ranks first in the South and
12th in the nation for percentage
of students taking the SAT-1.
Dr. DeMary serves on many
committees, including the U.S.
Secretary of Labor’s Committee
on Changing Demographics in
the Workforce; the legislative,
health and safety, and international committees of the Council
of Chief State School Officers;
and the Governor’s Commission on National and Community
Service.
Her honors include alumni
awards from Virginia Commonwealth University, where she
received a master’s in special
education; and from The College
of William and Mary, where she
received a bachelor’s in elementary education and doctorate in
educational planning and administration. She is vice president of
the VCU Alumni Association.
She and her husband live in
Chesterfield County. They have
two adult children.

Four-week business training courses
coming to the Middle Peninsula
If you’re looking to start your
own business or take an existing
business to the next level you
need more than just hard work to
get you where you want to go.
In any business, there is much
more to running an operating a
business than being proficient at
a trade or skill. Business training
can help prepare you for bookkeeping and tax requirements,
help you more cost effectively
market your business, manage
payroll and much more. With
over half of small businesses
failing within the first five years,
entrepreneurs certainly need any
advantage they can get.
The Middle Peninsula Business Development Partnership
(MPBDP) is a mission-based
organization that has provided
training and assistance to hundreds of small business owners
in the Middle Peninsula and
has helped countless numbers
of entrepreneurs obtain financing to start their business. After
completing the comprehensive
eight-session course, participants
will be better equipped to grow
their business and will also be
eligible to apply for small loans
of up to $25,000 to grow their
business.
The four-week small business
training course is from February
15 through March 10 in Saluda.
Classes will be held two nights a
week from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and the
cost to participate is only $40,
which includes nightly refreshments and materials. If you’re a
small business owner or thinking of becoming one, you can’t
afford to miss this event.
Call 804-758-4917 for more
information or visit MPBDP
online at <mpbdp.org> to register.

Farm Credit returns over $18 million
to area farmers and rural residents
Customers of Farm Credit who
live in Virginia received patronage refund checks totaling more
than $18,000,000 during 2004.
In a ceremony in Washington,
Senator George Allen and Senator John Warner joined Farm
Credit board chairmen from the
three Farm Credit associations in
Virginia to announce the distribution of the refunds to farmers
and rural residents in the state.
Greg Farmer president of
Colonial Farm Credit, explained
that Farm Credit is organized as
a customer-owned cooperative.
“Our customers share in the profitable operation of their company
through a patronage refund, and
reducing their borrowing costs
and returning money to the rural
communities where they live,”
said Farmer.
Valley Farm Credit, Farm
Credit of the Virginias and Colonial Farm Credit provide more
than $1.8 billion in financing to
nearly 18,000 farmers, agribusinesses and rural homeowners in
Virginia, including Middlesex
County. They loan funds for
home purchase and construction,
land and farm purchases, equipment, farming expenses, and
horse and livestock purchases.
Library to host
‘Dragon‘ program
On Sunday, February 27, at 2
p.m. the Deltaville Library will
present a program by Teta Kain,
‘’Adventures on the Dragon,” an
account of the many interesting
types of plants and animals that
are found along the river called
Dragon Run.
As always refreshments will
be served after the program.
