United by Diversity,
United in Diversity
It is hard to imagine any LGBT community center—be it here in
Milwaukee or just 90 minutes to the west in Madison, be it to our south
in Racine or across this nation in Boston, Phoenix or Seattle—not
being defined and impacted by the concept of diversity. The very
nature of the initials L, G, B, and T (or GLBT or LGBTQ or GLTBQA or
some variant thereof) that create the name of the minority community
of which we are a part implies diversity through sexual orientation and
gender identity.
But that’s only one facet of who we are as a people, only one
aspect of—as my tribal elders are wont to say—our spiritual face. We
as a people reflect many races, ethnicities, and cultural heritages. We
straddle the gamut of socio-economic classes, religious and spiritual
traditions, and education backgrounds. Some of us are partnered,
some are single; some folks are married, and yet others live as a
triad. There are those of us who are challenged by physical disabilities
or chronic or life-threatening illnesses. We are school teachers and
architects, veterans and healers, venture capitalists and unemployed
workers. Some of us have a home, and some wonder where home
could possibly be.
We are the elders who remember the dark days of the McCarthy
era or the assassination of JFK as well as the marvels of Neil
Armstrong landing on the moon or the collapse of the Berlin Wall. We
are the youth whose fingers are nimble with technology and are globally
4

connected via social network systems, yet striving to find a unique
identity in the world. We are the generations in between, the generations that have been, and those that are yet to come.
Here at the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, we as LGBT people—staff and board members, volunteers and program participants—
honor and celebrate that which is unique in all of us. We embrace
diversity for that is what unifies us to challenge the perceptions and
beliefs of a dominant culture that prefers homogeneity. As Dr.
Maggi Cage, the Executive Director of the Community Center, recently
stated in a letter to the Wisconsin Gazette, “The Community Center
is one of the most diverse and inclusive LGBT organizations in the
city.” For example, 38% of the Community Center’s board of directors
are people of color, and interestingly, that same percentage holds true
for our staff, representing the African American, Latino, and Native
American communities. Our board and staff reflect a broad range of
sexual orientation and gender identity. Across our programs, participants are equally diverse, with varied racial and ethnic backgrounds,
sexual orientations, gender identities, religious beliefs and ages. Many of them have a moderate to low income status. It is the power
of diversity among all of our constituents that inspires the Community
Center to develop programs and services that are culturally sensitive
and competent, highly responsive, compassionate and relevant to the
estimated 8,000 people we serve.
And so each day, we at the Community Center strive to live by our
motto: United by Diversity, United in Diversity.

Strategic Goals
2009-2012 May 7, 2009
Mission Statement
The mission of the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center is to further develop our vibrant
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the greater Milwaukee area, thus
improving the quality of life for all of us.
The Mission is supported by the Center’s leadership in community building, health
promotion, advocacy, and communications.
Strategic Goals
1. The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center will implement a comprehensive communications
plan that supports electronic, print, and person-to-person communications which will advance
community events and information. (2010)
•• A marketing specialist volunteered to help Community Center staff complete our
communications plan, and from that effort, we hired a part-time Communications
Coordinator.
•• A web-design firm volunteered to redesign the Community Center’s website so that it
is more visually appealing and user-friendly.
•• The Community Center launched two monthly news e-blasts: an events calendar that
is distributed the first week of every month, and our Community Center newsletter,
distributed the third week of every month.
•• To increase visibility, The Community Center sent out 60 press releases on a regular
basis, and several of its programs were the focus of news reports on all three major
local TV stations and on Radio 88.9.
2. The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center will form a network with LGBT organizations in
Milwaukee to develop a long-term shared vision for LGBT community development. (2011)
•• The Community Center continued to bring together executives directors from various
LGBT organizations at a monthly round-table discussion to establish a long-term
shared vision for our community.
• • The Community Center partnered with Pathfinders and Lad Lake to develop QBLOK, a program that meets the housing and mentoring needs of homeless LGBT
youth.
•• The Community Center established approximately 150 partnerships with other organizations — LGBT and others at a local, state and national level — to mutually benefit
programs and services offered to the Milwaukee community at large.
6
Milwaukee LGBT Community Center Annual Report 2009
3. The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center will provide educational, personal growth,
health promotion, and community development services and programs based on
community need to 8,000 individuals.
•• The Community Center reached the goal of serving 8,000 individuals through the
continued enhancement of existing programs and services as well as the initiation of
our LGBT Breast Health program and the Q-BLOK program for homeless youth.
•• Due to the results of a CDC study that noted an alarming increase in HIV •
transmission among young men of color, our HIV Testing & Prevention program
was broadened to address the sexual health needs of youth of color.
4. The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center will move into expanded space that meets
emerging community needs, fosters community development, garners a sense of
community pride and investment, and supports LGBT organizations. (2011)
•• The Community Center engaged a variety of executive directors of other LGBT
organizations as well as LGBT and other community leaders to review the different
possibilities for a new location for the Center. Their feedback was critical for helping the
Community Center hone in on the best option for relocation.
5. The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center will be a catalyst for the development of
an annual community celebration that garners the attention of policy makers, media,
LGBT individuals and their families. (2012)
•• Discussion and planning continued around the process of launching a communitywide event that would help to normalize LGBT into the larger community.
Service Statement
The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center delivers educational, health promotion, and
community-building services that meet the needs of LGBT youth, adults and their allies
in the greater Milwaukee area from its primary facility and other sites. Community
Center programs are developed with a consideration of community need, diversity
and inclusivity, community development, availability of resources, and the Center’s
Mission and Vision.
Values
The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center believes in the goodness of lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender people. As an organization, the Center seeks to foster
community development and agency partnerships. The Center values leadership,
both formal and informal, and it supports responsibility and accountability among
individuals and organizations. To achieve its mission, the Center acknowledges the
value of diversity and inclusion and of proactive and responsive communications. The
Center knows that the LGBT community’s long-term quality of life requires the Center
to prosper financially and develop organizationally to meet community needs.
