THEORETICAL APPROACH
GLOBAL TIMES : effort to produce a rheoritical renewal
•(BUSQUETS, 2012; MUÑOZ, 2008, FRANÇOISE ASCHER, 2008, BERNARDO SECCHI, 2006)
• understand urban processes and to propose solutions for urban problems.
•Urbanization after 1970´s (DAVID HARVEY, 2011)
•criticism about its effects; (NOVICK, 20120 .
In Latin America in general and in Brazil, in particular:
•Modernization without Modernity; Excludent and incomplete modernization (CANDIDO CAMPOS, 1999 and HERMINIA
MARICATO, 2000)
SET OF IDEAS (MODERNITY AND CONTEMPORANEITY) ON URBANIZATION
HOW TO THE IDEAS CIRCULATE?
• models - what are models?/ PETER BURKE, 2012 - simplifying intellectual construction (like Barcelona model)
• contemporary strategies
• how are they being applied in such different contexts?
-GLOBAL SPACES/ GLOBAL PLACES: PUBLIC SPACES; OPEN SPACES WATERFRONTS "THE PLACE
WHERE NEW IDEAS CAN BE ENCOUNTERED" (BERNARDO SECCHI, 2006)
•Pos-industrial sights | Sights in new centralities - Sights that deal with city expansion and new economic activities
(tourism, services, and the car and other means of transportation)
•New sites, new images/ reimaging, urban branding, public-private partnerships, urban projects (projeto urbano).
METHODOLOGY
We want to understand how…
CASE STUDY (CONTEMPORARY EVENTS) - HOW WAS THE PROCESS?
Waterfront in Fortaleza/ Avenida Beira Mar - main case study
Processes within Plans, Projects and interventions
The set of ideas, in most cases, were imported without great reflections
top-bottom processes, in general/
REFERENCIAL CASES - NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CASES,
that could be good examples of the set of proposals and interventions for this type of situations.
Problem/ plans/ projects/ interventions
Rio de Janeiro - Copacabana
Barcelona interventions for the Olimpic Games
Two ambitious urban projects – Netherlands (Rotterdam – Kop van Zuid and Amsterdam – Ij Oevers)
CONTRIBUTIONS: INCLUSIVE URBANIZATION?
 In the Netherlands - Serendipity e flexibility is needed
 In Brazil – way to control the process | Estate
 Same "global time“ | Different Contexts | Same images | different results and
impacts.
 You cannot ‘learn a lesson” and apply it. Remake it. Adapt it. Recreate it.
 Unique processes and contexts, that have been named the same can result in images
that are alike, but may present totally different and unequal social, spacial and
environmental approaches.
INCLUSIVE URBANIZATION WHERE?
CHALLENGES
“Vila do Mar” (2007)
 social bias
 reintegrate inhabitants of environmental
degredated areas
 ZEIS | PDP – FOR 2009
