Frenetic, high-decibel
celebrations broke out
among BJP cadres in
Goa and elsewhere following the announcement that Gujarat Chief
Minister NarendraModi
had been appointed chairman of the party's election campaign panel on
Sunday.
June 9 2013 marks the
beginning of the NarendraModi era in the party, and the
eclipse of the Vajapyee-Advani era that guided the
Jansangh and the BJP for close to five decades. More
so, because the big announcement was made by BJP's
Rajnath Singh in the absence of Advani.

T
he federal privacy
watchdog said she will
look
into
any
implications for Canada posed
by U.S. government snooping on
a wide scale.
Privacy concerns have been
under a debate since it was
revealed that the National
Security Agency (NSA) has been
tapping into American internet
giants said reports.
A whistleblower from the
NSE revealed to Britain's
Guardian newspaper that the
NSA has access to huge volumes
of emails and phone calls via a
program called Prism.
The office of privacy
commissioner Jennifer Stoddart
said the scope of information
reportedly being collected raises
"significant concerns," reported
Global News.
Stoddartsaid it is difficult to
assess the merit of the
allegations. However, she plans
to confer with the watchdog that
oversees the Communications
Security Establishment - the
Canadian counterpart to the
NSA - "to determine how the
personal
information
of
Canadians may be affected,"
said reports.
Stoddart also plans to
contact International dataprotection authorities who may
have similar concerns about
information of their citizens,
reported CBC News.
On Monday Defense
Minister Peter MacKay said
Canada's CSE has not had access
to programs like Prism, reporter
Global News.
"The answer is no," said
MacKay in the House of
Commons.
MacKay insisted that CSE's
Whistleblower Edward
Snowden who leaked secrets
about the NSA last week
metadata program was operating
within the law, reported Global
News.
"This
program
is
specifically prohibited from
looking at the information of
Canadians," MacKay said.
"This program is very much
directed at activities outside the
country, foreign threats, in fact.
There is rigorous oversight.
There is legislation in place that
specifically dictates what can
and cannot be examined."
"This is something that has
been happening for years and,
in fact, ... the commissioner
highlighted that the activities
were authorized, carried out in
accordance with the law,
ministerial requirements and
CSE's policies and procedures,"
MacKay said.
CSE spokesman Ryan
Foreman said the agency could
not comment on its methods, or
operations last Friday, but added
the agency functions within all
Canadian laws, said reports.
The CSE has a staff of more
than 2,000 - including skilled
mathematicians and computer
whizzes - and an annual budget
of about $400 million, said
reports.

We have what India needs to fuel its rapid growth: John Baird
I'm delighted to be here tonight.
I'm also delighted that our High Commissioner to India, Stewar t Beck, could join us this evening. Stewar t
has done a spectacular job of promoting Canada's interests in India. He is close to my office, and we appreciate his leadership in South Asia.
I'm also glad that my Parliamentary Secretary, Deepak
Obhrai, could join me.
You know, Deepak was the Prime Minister's first choice
for Parliamentary Secretary. I'm the Prime Minister's
fifth foreign minister. So that tells you who really matters! In all seriousness, Deepak has played a crucial
role in expanding Canada's friendship with India.
It's a friendship built on shared values of democracy,
pluralism, federalism and respect for human rights.

RESIGNATION
BJP on Tuesday reached a truce
with sulking patriarch L K Advani
who agreed not to press for his
resignation from key party posts
after RSS intervened to end the
two-day crisis triggered by his opposition to Narendra Modi's elevation.
"Today
afternoon,
RSS
sarsanghchalak (chief) Shri
Mohan Bhagwat spoke to Shri
Advani and asked him to respect
BJP parliamentary board decision
and continue to guide the party in
national interest.
"Shri Advani has decided to accept Shri Bhagwat's advice," said
a statement read out by party
president Rajnath after meeting
Advani in the company of other
leaders. Flanked by leaders including Sushma Swaraj and Nitin
Gadkari, Singh made the announcement at Advani's residence but the party veteran was
conspicuous by his absence.
Asked why Advani was not
present, Singh said, "I told him that
this is my press conference and
it will not look nice that you sit
and hear me." In a bid to mollify
Advani, Singh said he had assured
him that all his "concerns" regarding functioning of the party, which
he had cited as a reason for quitting the party posts, would be
"properly addressed".

weeks later at Glitz Cupcakes for
$2.63 and several restaurant

JIAH KHAN'S MOTHER SPEAKS OUT
Bollywood Star Jiah Khan's mother
has finally broken her silence for the
first time after she found her daughter dead in her apartment in Mumbai.
Rabiya said her daughter was in a
live-in relationship with her boyfriend
SurajPancholi, son of actor
AdityaPancholi reported Times of
India.
"Around 8.30pm I and Jiah returned
after a long drive. Then I went to my
friend AnjuMahendru's home. When
I came back home, all lights were
switched on, Jiah's handbag was on
the floor. When I entered Jiah's room
I found her hanging," said Rabiya told
News X.
The suicide note allegedly written by
Jiah said the actress was an alleged
victim of rape and had gone through
an abortion said reports by Mirror.
Meanwhile
Police
arrested
SurajPancholi who will be in custody
until June 13 for allegedly abetting
Jiah's suicide, said reports.
"Rabiya also told us Jiah was completely shattered when Suraj sent her
a 'break-up' bouquet," said a Police
officer as reported by Times of India.
"This was one of the reasons behind
the young actress' extreme step.
Suraj had promised to marry Jiah,"
the officer said.
She also writes about feeling "broken" and "dead inside" said Rabiya
as reported by the Mirror.
She wrote, "I don't know how to say
this to you but I might as well now as
I have nothing to lose. I've already
lost everything. If you're reading this
I might have already left or about to
leave. I am broken inside," as reported by the Mirror.
"I leave this place with nothing but
broken dreams and empty promises.
All I want now is to go to sleep and
never wake up again. I am nothing. I
had everything."
The police is investigating the suicide note along with handwriting
analysis to see if the suicide note
was written by Jiah, said reports.
Meanwhile, the police is also looking into hospital records to check
where the actress conducted her
abortion, reported Times of India.
Rabiya tweeted, "my daughter had
bruises on her jaw. She was hit badly
that pushed her to the end path. I wish
I was there. How dare he (Suraj) hit
her!" as reported by Times of India.
Meanwhile, AdityaPancholi reportedly said his son Suraj is not the villain in Jiah's story.
"If Suraj is to be blamed then please
make him the villain," said the father.
"They'reprobably looking for a villain
in this story, and Suraj has been selected as the villain of this story. If
you take Raavan out of the Ramayan,
it loses its impact. What is Sholay
without Gabbar Singh, said Aditya.
"For the last three days, I've done what
I could do as a concerned father and
the head of my family. Now I've the
space to see what loss has Jiah's
family suffered. We were there - my
son Suraj and I, for the funeral. Not
for a second did we think we should
stay away just to avoid trouble."
"Jiah and her mother (actress Rabiya
Amin) are our friends. We are not
going to turn our backs on them just
because some questions are being
asked by some people who don't
know the truth and are only interested
in being judgmental," he added.

The Internal Revenue Service, last week, reminded US citizens and
resident aliens who have lived or worked abroad during all or part of
2012, that they may have a US tax liability and a filing requirement in
2013. "The IRS has finally decided that educating taxpayers and tax
advisors of tax obligations of foreign assets and income would be
helpful and encourage compliance. The recent education
announcements appear to address the IRS' alleged shortcomings in
educating taxpayers with foreign accounts," says Parag Patel, a tax
attorney at New Jersey based law firm Patel Law Offices.
This announcement would be relevant for US citizens and green
card holders who were working outside the US for all or some part of
2012.
Tax liability
All US citizens and green card holders must file their tax returns in
the US on their global income irrespective of where they live. "They
must pay taxes on such foreign income unless a treaty or statutory
exclusion or foreign tax credit applies to reduce their US tax liability

The Peel Regional Police - Diversity

13th annual Race Against Racism on
Saturday, June 15 2013 at
Mississauga Valley Park located at

to zero," explains Florida based tax attorney Rahul Ranadive.
Moreover, tax payers must file their tax return in the US along with
certain offshore asset compliance forms. Part III of Schedule B of
Form 1040 asks about the existence of foreign accounts, such as
bank and securities accounts, and usually requires US citizens, green
card holders and other residents to report the country in which each
account is located. Certain taxpayers must also file Form 8938 Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets if the aggregate
value of their foreign financial assets on Dec 31, 2012 exceeds
prescribed limits (for instance, $ 100,000 for married filing jointly). In
addition, they must also file Form TD F 90-22.1, commonly known as
FBAR or Foreign Bank and Financial Account Report if the aggregate
value of offshore financial accounts exceeds $10,000 during the year.
Due date and extension
While the 2012 tax filing deadline for taxpayers living in the US was
April 15, 2013, if you are a US citizen or green card holder and were
residing overseas on that due date, you are allowed an automatic 2month extension to file your return and pay any amount due without
requesting an extension. So this year, the automatic 2-month extension
will be till June 17, 2013. To use this automatic two-month extension,
taxpayers must attach a statement to their return explaining that on
the regular due date of the return, that is April 15, 2013, they were
living outside the United States that their main place of business or
post of duty was outside the United States .
Additional extension
If you are unable to file your return by the automatic 2-month extension
date, you can request an additional extension to October 15 by filing
Form 4868. You must file this form before the automatic 2-month
extension date, that is, before June 17, 2013.
Penalties and interest
"Remember that these extensions are only extensions to file and not
extensions to pay. So if you have a tax due, you should have paid it
by April 15, 2013 failing which you will be charged interest on the
balance between April 15 and June 17," says Vinay Navani, a CPA
and director of tax at New Jersey based firm Wilkin & Guttenplan,
PC. If you have taxes due and have not yet paid them, it might be
best not to wait until June 17 but to do it at the earliest.
Also remember that any tax due payments made after June 15 will be
subject, not only to interest charges but also to failure to pay
penalties.

Sikhs join U.S. President Barrack
Obama in discussion on Mental
Health at the White House

Dr. Rajwant Singh, Chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and
Education, and many prominent leaders across the U.S. were among
those who gathered last week at the White House for a conference on
mental health. This conference was part of the Obama Administration's
effort to launch a national conversation to increase understanding and
awareness about mental health. President Obama opened the event by
describing how many people "suffer in silence" rather than seeking
help: We see it in the veterans who come home from the battlefield with
invisible wounds of war, but who feel like seeking treatment is somehow
a sign of weakness - when, in fact, it's a sign of strength. We see it in the
parents who would do anything for their kids, but who often fight their
mental health battle alone - afraid that reaching out would invite
judgment or reflect badly on them. And we see it in tragedies that we
have the power to prevent. With these remarks, the President launched
the National Dialogue on Mental Health, bringing together 150 mental
health experts, a dozen members of Congress, mental health advocates
and patients, educators, health care providers, faith leaders, lawmakers
and local government officials from across the country and celebrities
like Glenn Close and Bradley Cooper. Vice President Joe Biden closed
the conference. The White House has also launched a website,
mentalhealth.gov, with its tag line "Let's talk about it." Cooper, who has
been promoting mental health awareness since his Oscar-nominated
leading role as a man with bipolar disorder in last year's "Silver Linings
Playbook," Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki also delivered
remarks during the closing close the conference. Close said Monday
that her experience is "a family affair." Her sister, Jessie, was diagnosed
with bipolar disorder at 51 and Jessie's son, Calen, was diagnosed with
schizoaffective disorder at 19. In 2009, Close's family battles led her to
help start a non-profit called Bring Change 2 Mind, which produces
public service announcements to fight the stigma and discrimination
associated with mental illness. She participated in the panel discussion
on how to address negative attitudes about mental illness. "We need
people living with mental illness with the courage to say this is what I
am living with. I can talk about this," Close said.
Sikh Council on Religion and Education had brought together 20
community leaders and Sikh mental health professionals to join in a
conference call with the White House recently to engage the wider Sikh
community across US on this issue. SCORE is answering the President's
call to launch a national conversation to increase the understanding
and awareness about mental health by organizing a national conference
of Sikh leaders and mental health professionals later this year. The
attendees of the conference call included individuals who are
continuously counseling the families of the Oak Creek shooting victims
and other members of the community in Wisconsin.Dr. Rajwant Singh
said, "This issue is of vital importance to the entire nation and Sikh
community is a partner in furthering dialogue and awareness about
mental health. This issue affects all Americans and we are ready to
assist President Obama in this agenda." He continued, "We, as a faith
community, have a duty to reach out to all those who need help but are
too often afraid to seek it because of the shame and secrecy associated
with mental illness. South Asian community leaders ought to discuss
how we can all work together to reduce stigma in our own gurdwaras
and temples." Obama had directed Health and Human Services
Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Education Secretary Arne Duncan to
launch this national dialogue on mental health immediately after the
Newtown, Conn. tragedy in December 2012. Sebelius hosted the panel
on addressing negative attitudes and Duncan moderated a session on
successful mental health outreach efforts during this conference at the
White House. Noting that less than 40 percent of people with mental
disorders seek treatment, the President stressed the need to do a better
job recognizing mental health issues, especially in children.
Acknowledging that we must ensure that treatment is available, the
President described how the Affordable Care Act will expand mental
health care to 60 million more Americans, and he detailed new investments
to increase the mental health workforce. He also noted how new
investments in science, including the BRAIN initiative, should bring
better treatments for those who need them. The conference's agenda
was broad and it included discussion of insurance coverage for mental
health care and substance abuse, recognizing the signs of mental illness
in young people and improved access to services for veterans. The
overall goal for this national agenda is reducing the stigma of mental
health problems and encouraging those who are struggling to get help.
The White House also plans to focus on commitments being made in
the private sector to increase understanding and awareness, including
a campaign by the National Association of Broadcasters through
television and radio ads and social media. Several organizations that
work with young people also are planning to make new commitments,
including high school principals holding mental health assemblies, to
YMCA instructing staff and camp counselors to recognize the signs of
mental health issues in kids, to religious leaders launching conversations
on the issue.
The conference also plans to tout improvements in mental health
coverage under Obama's health care law, including a ban beginning
next year against denying coverage to those who are mentally ill.
There were five short presentations focused on successful outreach
tactics on mental health. The presentations were designed to help
conference participants learn about creative and effective ways to reach
their own community, audience or membership about the issue of mental

Welcome to the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce's annual awards
and gala night.
This evening we celebrate the achievements of distinguished individuals. Their achievements have been recognised by our Advisory
board.
Since their inception twenty years ago, our awards have come to
symbolize the best of the Indo-Canadian community has to offer to
Canada, to India and to the world.
In these two decades we have recognized over 200 individuals from
entrepreneurs to professionals.
From innovators to corporate executives.
And from dedicated philanthropist to bright young leaders .
Our award winners make an enormous contribution to the fabric of
Canadian society and we are proud of them.
Like many of you in this hall today our own journey star ted thir ty six
years ago. It has been a transformational experience. In these three
and a half decades our reach and depth has gained momentum and
we take great pride in the range of initiatives that the organizations
have taken. Our over-arching aim is of course to foster bilateral trade
and the ICCC plays a vital role in this regard.
But the ICCC does much more - we assist newcomers in their settlement here by providing oppor tunities to liaise with our members, we
reach out to their like - minded ethnic organizations, we provide
mentoring oppor tunities.
In effect we create pathways to Canadian citizenship and par ticipation.
We have grown from being an umbrella organization of the Indian
diaspora to become a business organization that is the voice of small
business. Along the way, we have welcomed and continue to welcome the growing band of "India watchers."
Our two featured speakers - the honourable John Baird and Premier
Kathleen Wynne fall into this category. We thank them for their presence here tonight and look forward to their remarks.
This combination of the Indo-Canadian community and the "India
watchers" makes for a distict Canadian advantage and brings new
meaning to our motto "we mean business."
Friends, the ICCC has been at the forefront of promoting bilateral trade,
we feel vindicated that as Canada - India trade gathers momentum
over the last few years, organisations such as ours will continue to
play an impor tant role in the coming years.
I like to use the analogy of an aircraft that steadily cruises on the
runway before it suddenly takes off. Trade between Canada and India
is at present cruising along the runway.
It will soon be reaching the take - off stage.
Our theme this year 'par tnering economic growth - a time to soar'
captures this sentiment. We will be active par ticipants in the lift off.
Friends, we have focused our energies to reach out to cities in Canada
to help small businesses in these cities to take advantage of globalization.
Earlier this year I led one of the largest trade missions to India. More
than a hundred Canadian small businesses par ticipated in that mission.
The mayors of Brampton and Markham accompanied us. We visited
eight cities across India and organized close to 40 business events in
two weeks.
The highlight of the mission was our par ticipation in the vibrant Gujarat
2013 business summit where Canada was the par tner country and
our chamber was the par tner organisation.
The mission created many oppor tunities for Canadian small businesses to explore the Indian market and network with potential par tners.
It gave our par tner cities a branding platform to project their advantages to Indian investors.
In addition to the Indian trade mission to India, we are also working on
reverse trade mission of Indian companies to Canada.
In the next six to eight months we will be hosting trade delegations
from Karnataka, Kerala, Gujarat, Punjab and Rajasthan.
We are bringing a tangible meaning to bilateral economic cooperation. The foundation of a strong and meaningful relationship between
Canada and India has been laid.
Friends, both Canada and India have signed various agreements and
we are assisting the federal government in its current CEPA negotiations, slated for completion by the end of this year.
Trade grows when businesses talk to each other. At the ICCC we bring
these businesses across borders together. This awareness is important to branding Canada. Everyone working in the Canada-India space
will agree that we will need to intensify our effor ts in advancing the
Canadian brand.
We as a chamber are convinced that creating awareness and building
brand is critically impor tant. That is why the ICCC's effor ts in Canada
and in India are distinctive and focused on small business oppor tunities.
Friends, growth is an imperative in our world - whether it is bilateral
trade or the growth of an organisation. I am proud to say that our
membership has now crossed the two thousand mark.
We have reached into new segments.
Earlier this year, on the International Women's day on March 8, we
opinion
launched this Women Entrepreneurs and Professionals Committee
and in a couple of months the new committee recruited nearly two
hundred members.
Our youth wing - the Young Professionals committee - has built linkages with multicultural youth organisations and organised programs
that have been well received.
The youth is our future and as an institution if we have to grow and
remain relevant, we must continue to engage our future leaders.
I stand today before you as the twenty fifth President of a 36 year old
organisation. I am of the view that we have completed the first phase
of our journey.
MIDWEEK NEWS WEEKLY
TUESDAY, JUNE 11, 2013
It was the phase of creation and survival. It was a difficult period. I am
aware that this journey would not have been possible without the
support and encouragement of everyone who is present in this room
today and our supporters and well-wishers across Canada.
The next phase of our journey begins now. The phase of consolidation
and growth. This phase will have its own challenges.
But I am confident that we will succeed. We will grow because of the
support we get from our members, our sponsors and our stakeholders.
On behalf of the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce I thank all of you
for your continued support.
WE HAVE WHAT INDIA NEEDS TO FUEL
ITS RAPID GROWTH - ENERGY,
AGRICULTURE, INFRASTRUCTURE AND
HIGHER EDUCATION: JOHN BAIRD
Contd. from Page 1
It's a friendship that one
million Canadians of Indian
descent have strengthened.
And it's a friendship that has
grown, in no small measure,
because of the ICCC's effor ts
to connect businesses in our
two countries.
But the Canada-India friendship is also one of unrealized
potential. It has the ingredients to be one of the greatest
par tnerships for both our
countries.
Today, I want to talk about
what our government is doing
to deepen this relationship...
where we see opportunities
for growth... and how the
historic ties between our two
countries shine a bright light
on our collective future.
Let's star t by looking at what
our government has done-and
is doing-to grow trade
between Canada and India.
As you know, our
government's number one
priority is jobs, growth and
economic prosperity.
Our ambitious pro-trade
agenda is opening new
markets and creating opportunities for Canadian businesses. But to truly open new
markets, we need to forge
closer ties with India.
Canada and India have so
much to offer the world.
We have so much to offer
each other.
And if the last year is a sign
of things to come, we have
such a bright future ahead of
us.
Six months ago, Prime
Minister [Stephen] Harper
paid his second visit to India.
As a sign of just how much
India matters to Canada, the
Prime Minister spent more
time in India than anywhere
else. Indeed, it was his
longest official visit since
assuming office. It was also
his most productive.
Which makes perfect sense.
We have what India needs to
fuel its rapid growth: energy,
agriculture, infrastructure and
higher education.
Under the Prime Minister's
leadership, we're star ting to
deliver in these areas.
Take a look at the Nuclear
Cooperation Agreement. As
the Prime Minister announced
agreement on the Administrative Arrangements, he buried
close to 40 years of troubled
nuclear history. More
impor tantly, this agreement
expands nuclear commerce
between our two countries.
With Canada emerging as an
energy superpower, we value
Indian investment in natural
resources and energy. On this
same visit, Prime Ministers
Harper and [Manmohan]
Singh tasked officials with
developing an action plan to
do three things: promote
research, facilitate academic
and industrial exchanges, and
accelerate the commercialization of technology. I'll come
back to this a bit later.
This action plan also complements a memorandum of
understanding that establishes
business par tnerships in the IT
sector.
The two prime ministers also
finalized the Canada-India
Social Security Agreement. This
agreement will ensure that
those who have lived or worked
in both our countries receive the
benefits they have earned.
To top it all off, the Prime
Minister announced the upgrade
of our trade office in Bangalore
to a consulate. With eight
offices in the country, Canada's
trade network in India is our
third largest globally. It's the
second-largest foreign network
in India.
All of that-and I haven't even
begun to talk about the $2.5
billion wor th of commercial
deals that Canadian and Indian
companies signed last year.
Deals that will open more doors
for our expor ters...
Deals that will encourage
economic growth...
Deals that will create jobs in
both our countries...
Ladies and gentlemen, we have
a bright future ahead.
But as I said at the outset, there
is room to grow. There is room
to expand trade, to cooperate on
security issues and to position
Canada as the global leader in
international education.
Prime Ministers Harper and
Singh have tasked our officials
with tripling bilateral trade to
$15 billion by 2015. So far,
we're on track. The growth in
the number of Canadian
companies actively working in
India has jumped from 250 to
more than 600. While trade is
now at $5.2 billion, we cannotwe will not-rest on our laurels.
We have two agreements in the
works that will take our trade
relationship to a whole new
level.
We're negotiating a Comprehensive Economic Par tnership
Agreement, or CEPA. We look
forward to greater momentum in
these talks and plan to conclude
a high-quality agreement by the
end of this year. A CEPA could
boost Canada's and India's
economies by at least $6 billion
each. Indeed, we need a
completed trade agreement for
two-way trade to blossom.
We're eager to finalize the
foreign investment promotion
and protection agreement,
which would make it easier and
more predictable for Canadian
companies to do business in
India. It will unlock the full
potential of our trade relationship. And it will benefit both
countries' businesses, workers
and families.
As we negotiate these economic agreements, we're
keenly aware that without a
more secure regional and global
environment, we cannot fully
realize our economic potential.
And while our defence relations
with India have traditionally
been modest, we're now
Foreign Minister John Baird giving a speech at the ICCC
Awards 2013 at Toronto Metro Convention Centre
Cour tesy: Irfan Ali, Nice Productions
working to boost cooperation on
this front.
That means we need to collaborate more robustly on regional
security challenges. Challenges
like governance and
counter terrorism in Afghanistan... or emergency preparedness and the ending of civil
wars in Burma... challenges that
threaten the stability needed by
our businesses and civil society
to contribute fully.
We are not frozen in the 1980s.
We grieve for victims of
terrorism in India and know
where it spawns from: those
who cling to the paranoia of the
past. India's future is based on
the shared prosperity we can
achieve in peace and freedom.
And as Iran inches ever closer
to nuclear weapons capability,
Canada and India will work
together on combatting the
proliferation of nuclear weapons. In fact, Iran could learn a
thing or two from the CanadaIndia experience. The Nuclear
Cooperation Agreement assures
civilian and peaceful use of
nuclear material, equipment and
technology from Canada. We're
always willing to work with
peaceful, freedom-loving
nations. Along with potential
opportunities for investment in
energy, we see immense
oppor tunities in education.
Last year, more than 30,000
Indian students studied in
Canada. India is the secondlargest source of international
students in Canada. It's a
number that keeps growing
because of Canada's worldclass education and our safe
multicultural communities.
But consider this: to fully take
advantage of its knowledge
potential, India needs to educate
550 million citizens under the
age of 25.
That's a daunting task.
To get there, India will need an
additional 800 universities and
45,000 colleges. India simply
cannot do it alone. It will need
the help of Canada's universities and colleges, which are
among the best in the world.
Canadian academic institutions
and the Association of Canadian
Community Colleges are
actively working to skill the one
million young Indians who enter
the workforce every month.
This young generation-the
demographic dividend that
could easily become a
demographic disaster-is the
generation that will bring
great change to India. And
Canada has a vision to
become the 21st-century
leader in international
education. We will play a part
in helping India's next
generation prosper... to be
part of India's evolution into
an economic powerhouse.
This is why we have signed a
memorandum of understanding to promote student and
faculty exchanges and build
bridges between the future
leadership communities of
both countries.
Of course, this deepened
engagement could not have
happened without Canada's
Indo-Canadian community.
You are leading doctors,
nurses, teachers, lawyers,
business owners and public
servants. You have prospered
as proud Canadians.
The sons and daughters of
India contribute to all aspects
of Canadian culture and
society.
And I'm not even talking about
Deepak! I'm talking about
Russell Peters, Deepa Mehta,
Manny Malhotra and others.
Many of you here tonight are
shining examples of the
achievements of IndoCanadians, who are making
Canada stronger and more
innovative-leading the way in
strengthening our bonds with
India. Our recent history has
been one of determination. When
faced with a global economic
downturn that originated beyond
our respective borders, Canada
and India held their ground while
other nations slid.
Our financial systems did not fail
us. Our fiscal prudence served
us well.
Our commitment to global trade
never wavered.
Now we are both determined to
become stronger trade partners.
This is a relationship that has
clearly benefited both our nations
in ways that were once unimaginable. And we're going to count
on you to help us realize the full
potential of this deepening
friendship.
Thank you very much.

JOB MARKET SAW A
BOOM IN MAY IP10
HARPER GOVERNMENT TAKES
ADDITIONAL STEPS TO HELP SMALL
BUSINESSES PROSPER
T
he Honourable Ted
Menzies, Minister of
State (Finance), today
met with the owners and
employees of Jimmy's Coffee on
Baldwin Street in Toronto to
highlight the vital role that small
businesses like theirs play in
supporting the economy and job
creation, and how the Harper
Government's Economic Action
Plan will help them grow and
succeed.
"Comprising 98 per cent of
all employer businesses in
Canada, small businesses are a
significant driver of economic
growth, and an important pillar
supporting workers, families and
communities from coast to coast
to coast," said Minister Menzies.
"Clearly, when our small
businesses
succeed,
all
Canadians succeed."
"Taking action on issues
that affect the bottom line of
Canadian small businesses is
important to help them grow their
business and, in turn, help grow
the economy," said Canadian
Federation of Independent
Business (CFIB) President and
CEO Dan Kelly. "Extending and
expanding the Employment
Insurance Hiring Credit, as well
as enhancing the Lifetime Capital
Gains Exemption, are two
measures
that
CFIB
recommended and will be
welcomed by many small firms
across Canada."
Economic Action Plan 2013
proposed a number of key
measures to support small
businesses including:
Extending and expanding the
temporary Hiring Credit for Small
Business for one year. This
temporary credit would provide up
to $1,000 against a small firm's
increase in its 2013 Employment
Insurance premiums over those
paid in 2012 to employers with
premiums of $15,000 or less in 2012.
In all, an estimated 560,000 small
businesses will benefit from this
measure, allowing them to reinvest
approximately $225 million in 2013.
Increasing the Lifetime
Capital Gains Exemption to
$800,000 from $750,000 in 2014, and
indexing it going forward. The
Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption
increases the rewards of investing
in small businesses and makes it
easier for owners to transfer their
family businesses to the next
generation of Canadians.
These new measures build
on the significant actions taken
by the Harper Government
since 2006 to support small
businesses:
Reducing
the
small
business tax rate to 11 per cent
from 12 per cent.
Increasing the small business
limit to $500,000 from $300,000.
Reducing the red tape
burden on small businesses,
including allowing business
owners to go paperless when
dealing with the Canada
Revenue Agency.
Introducing a Code of
Conduct for the Credit and Debit
Card Industry to help small
business owners when dealing
with credit card companies.
"As a small business trying
to grow and succeed, these
gestures of confidence and
encouragement
from
the
Government go a long way," said
Jimmy's manager Heather Jane.
"We at Jimmy's will be looking
forward to the benefits that the
extension and expansion of the
Hiring Credit can bring to us."
"For a small business with
$500,000 of taxable income, our
Government's cut in the small
business tax rate and increases in
the small business limit have, on their
own, lowered the federal corporate
tax bill by over 34 per cent-leaving
an additional $28,600 that can be
reinvested in the business," said
Minister Menzies. "These low-tax
measures translate into more jobs
and stronger growth for Canadians,
which is what our Economic
Action Plan is all about."

Whistleblower Edward Snowden
Twitter reacted to former technical assistant for the CIA, Edward
Snowden's decision to leak information while some received replies
from the whistleblower.
When Mid Week's reporter asked what his next step was, his
reply said, "Everyone needs to contact Congress and the State Dept.
and push to stop extradition attempts."
One supporter tweeted, "I think I have just read about the man
for which I have waited. Earmarks of a real hero."
Snowden revealed to Guardian last week about details of phone
calls received by the NSA regarding millions of Verizon customers.
"Any analyst at any time can target anyone, any selector,
anywhere. Where those communications will be picked up depends
on the range of the sensor networks and the authorities that analyst
is empowered with. Not all analysts have the ability to target
everything," he said as reported by the Guardian.
But I sitting at my desk certainly had the authorities to wiretap
anyone from you or your accountant to a Federal judge to even the
President if I had a personal e-mail," he said.
Snowden flew to Hong

Van Loan slams Justin Trudeau
Speaking to Global News , Justin Trudeau said he would "absolutely" welcome Senator Mac Harb back to the Liberal Caucus.
Minister Van Loan said on Justin Trudeau's Defence of Senator
Mac Harb:
"After weeks of defending the status quo in the Senate, Justin
Trudeau is now coming to the defence of Liberal Senator Mac
Harb, who even the Toronto Star has called "disgraced." Speaking to Global News today, Justin Trudeau said he would "absolutely" welcome the disgraced Senator back to the Liberal Caucus.
"Senator Mac Harb is refusing to repay over $50,000 in inappropriate claimed housing allowances and, instead, is trying to
stick taxpayers with the bill.
"Defending disgraced Senator Mac Harb isn't the only lapse in
judgment on Justin Trudeau's par t in recent weeks. Justin
Trudeau continues to allow Liberal Senator Pana Merchant to sit
in the Liberal Caucus despite uncer tainty over the status of a
$1.7 million offshore bank account that media have repor ted
she has not declared publicly, as required by Senate rules.
Justin Trudeau's defence of Senator Mac Harb and Pana Merchant is just more proof that the Liberal Leader lacks the judgment to be Prime Minister and is in over his head."

JOB MARKET SAW A BOOM IN MAY
Employment rose by 95,000 in May,
with most of the increase in full-time
work. This employment gain pushed
the unemployment rate down 0.1
percentage points to 7.1 per cent.
Compared with 12 months earlier,
employment grew 1.4 per cent or
250,000, all in full-time work. Over the
same period, the total number of
hours worked rose 1.1 per cent.
In May, employment increased in
Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, New
Brunswick and Manitoba, while it
declined in Prince Edward Island.
Employment rose in construction;
retail and wholesale trade; "other
services;" and business, building
and other support services.
All of the employment gains in May
were among private sector
employees, offsetting losses over the
previous two months for this group.
Employment in May increased
among youths and people aged 55
and over, while it was little changed
for those aged 25 to 54.
"I should just mention, obviously
very pleased with the job numbers
today," said Prime Minister Stephen
Harper.
"We don't… we don't obviously
want to pay too much attention to
what happens month to month,
because we know this is very volatile,
but the Canadian economy is now
up to about a million jobs, net new
jobs created since the recession. We
obviously know that's one of the
best records in the developed world,
and we hope this trip and other
things we're doing will continue to
push that forward."
Employment gains in several
provinces
In May, employment in Ontario
increased by 51,000, with large gains
in full-time work partly offset by
losses in part-time work. With this
gain, the unemployment rate fell 0.4
percentage points to 7.3per cent, the
lowest since November 2008. Yearover-year growth was 2.0per cent,
higher than the national average of
1.4per cent.
Employment in Quebec rose by
20,000 in May, offsetting declines
earlier in the year. The unemployment
rate was 7.7per cent. Compared with
12 months earlier, employment was
up 1.3per cent.
In Alberta, employment increased for
the second consecutive month, up
19,000 in May. Despite this gain, the
unemployment rate for the province
was up 0.4 percentage points to
4.8per cent as more people
participated in the labour force. On a
year-over-year basis, employment
growth in this province was 2.3per
cent, all in full-time work.
The number of workers in New
Brunswick rose by 3,700 in May,
offsetting the decline in April. The
unemployment rate for the province
was 10.5per cent in May. Compared
with 12 months earlier, employment
was down 1.3per cent.
Following a decline the previous
month, employment in Manitoba
increased by 3,000 in May and the
unemployment rate was 5.7per cent.
On a year-over-year basis,
employment was little changed.
In Saskatchewan, employment was
little changed for the fourth
consecutive month. Nevertheless,
year-over-year growth was 2.9per
cent, well above the national
average.
Large gains in construction in May
Following two months of little
change, construction rose by 43,000
in May. With this gain, construction
was up 5.8per cent or 74,000 from 12
months earlier.
In May, employment in retail and
wholesale trade increased by 27,000.
Over the previous 12 months,
employment in this industry rose
3.1per cent or 83,000. Employment in
"other services," such as repair and
maintenance or private household
services, increased by 22,000 in May.
Despite this month's gain,
employment remained below its level
from 12 months earlier, down 5.5per
cent or 45,000. The number of
workers in business, building and
other support services rose by 21,000
in May. Compared with 12 months
earlier, employment in this industry
was up 5.6per cent or 38,000.
Employment rose by 95,000 among
private sector employees in May, and
was little changed for public sector
employees and the self-employed.
Compared with 12 months earlier, the
number of private sector employees
increased 1.1per cent or 123,000.
Public sector employment was up
2.6per cent or 92,000, mainly from
gains in health care and social
assistance. Self-employment was
little changed over this 12-month
period. Employment up among
youths and people aged 55 and over
In May, employment was up 54,000
among youths aged 15 to 24, with
gains in Ontario, Quebec, and
Alberta. This increase pushed their
unemployment rate down 0.9
percentage points to 13.6per cent.
With the employment increase in
May, year-over-year gains for this
age group totalled 48,000 (+2.0per
cent).
Following two months of little
change, employment among people
aged 55 and over rose by 34,000 in
May, with gains for both men and
women, pushing the unemployment
rate for this age group down 0.3
percentage points to 5.8per cent.
Over the previous 12 months,
employment increased 142,000
(+4.4per cent), mostly a result of
population ageing.
Among people aged 25 to 54,
employment was little changed in
May. Compared with 12 months
earlier, employment for people in this
age group was up 60,000 (+0.5per
cent).
Student summer employment
From May to August, the Labour
Force Survey collects labour market
data about young people aged 15 to
24 who were attending school full
time in March and who intend to
return to school full time in the fall.
The May survey results provide the
first indicators of the summer job
market, especially for students aged
20 to 24, as many students aged 15
to 19 are not yet out of school for the
summer. The data for June, July and
August will provide further insight
into the summer job market. The
published data are not seasonally
adjusted,
and
therefore
comparisons can only be made from
one year to another.
The rate of employment among
returning students aged 20 to 24,
that is, the number of employed as a
percentage of their population, was
59.9per cent in May, similar to that of
12 months earlier. Their
unemployment rate was 15.5per cent
in May, little changed from a year
earlier.
Building permits up by 10.5 per cent
Canadian municipalities issued
building permits worth $7.0 billion
dollars in April, up 10.5 per cent from
March. The advance in April was
the fourth consecutive monthly
increase. The recent upswing came
after a downward trend in the total
value of building permits that began
in the fall of 2012.
The advance in April came largely
from higher construction intentions
for multi-family dwellings in Ontario,
British Columbia and Quebec.
Construction intentions for
residential dwellings rose 21 per cent
to $4.4 billion. It was the second
straight monthly increase and the
highest level in 10 months. All
provinces posted gains except
Alberta and Nova Scotia. These two
provinces had posted large
increases in March.
In the non-residential sector, the
value of permits fell 3.6 per cent to
$2.6 billion, following two
consecutive monthly gains.
Declines were recorded in five
provinces, with Alberta and Ontario
posting the largest decreases. New
Brunswick registered the largest
increase, followed by Quebec and
British Columbia.
Residential sector: Significantly
higher construction intentions for
multi-family dwellings
Construction intentions for multifamily dwellings rose 51.9 per cent
to $2.1 billion, a second consecutive
monthly advance. This gain was the
result of higher construction
intentions for apartments and
apartments-condominium in eight
provinces, led by Ontario, British
Columbia and Quebec. Alberta and
Nova Scotia posted decreases.
The value of building permits for
single-family dwellings increased 1.1
per cent to $2.2 billion in April, the
third increase in four months. Gains
in British Columbia, Quebec and
Ontario more than offset declines
posted in the other seven provinces.
Alberta had the largest declines,
followed by Nova Scotia.
Canadian municipalities approved
permits for the construction of 19,377
new dwellings, up 33.0per cent from
March. This increase was
attributable to multi-family dwellings,
which rose 58.3 per cent to 13,168
units. The number of single-family
dwellings, however, fell 0.6per cent
to 6,209 units.
Non-residential sector: Declines in
the institutional and industrial
components
Non-residential building permits
were down in April, as an increase in
construction intentions for
commercial buildings was not
enough to offset declines in the
institutional and industrial
components.
Construction intentions for
institutional buildings fell 27.2 per
cent to $715 million, following a
119.2per cent increase the previous
month. Despite this monthly
decrease, the total value of
institutional building permits
continued the upward trend that
began at the end of 2012, albeit at a
slower pace. The decline in April was
mainly attributable to government
buildings in Alberta, medical
buildings in Ontario and educational
buildings in Saskatchewan.
The value of permits for industrial
buildings decreased 5.3per cent to
$450 million, following two
consecutive monthly gains.
Decreases occcurred in six
provinces, led by Ontario, where it
was largely attributable to
manufacturing plants. Other notable
declines came in utilities and primarysector buildings in Saskatchewan.
In the commercial component, the
value of permits rose 15.8 per cent to
$1.4 billion, following a 19.3 per cent
decrease in March. Gains in four
provinces, particularly Alberta, offset
the declines in the remaining
provinces. Office buildings in Alberta
and Ontario accounted for most of
the advance.
Higher construction intentions in
most provinces
The total value of permits was up
in six provinces in April, with
British Columbia in the lead,
followed by Ontario and Quebec.
British Columbia posted the
largest advance, as a result of
higher construction intentions
for multi-family dwellings and, to
a lesser extent, institutional
buildings and single-family
dwellings.
The gain in Ontario resulted
primarily
from
higher
construction intentions for multifamily dwellings, while in
Quebec, multi-family dwellings
and industrial buildings were
behind the increase.
The largest declines occurred in
Alberta and were due to lower
construction intentions for
institutional buildings and, to a
lesser
extent,
residential
buildings. Higher construction
intentions in most census
metropolitan areas
Construction intentions were up
in 27 of the 34 census
metropolitan areas (CMAs), led
by Calgary and Vancouver.
The gains in Calgary were driven
by
higher
construction
intentions for commercial
buildings. The increase in
Vancouver came mainly from
multi-family dwellings.
London was a distant third, with
an advance largely attributable to
higher residential construction
intentions. The increase in
Montréal came primarily from
multi-family dwellings. Following
a record high the previous month,
Edmonton posted the largest
decline in April. This decrease
resulted from lower construction
intentions for institutional
buildings. Saskatoon and
Toronto were a distant second
and third, with both CMAs posting
declines in the non-residential sector
and single-family dwellings. The
increases in construction intentions
for multi-family dwellings in
Saskatoon and Toronto were not
large enough to offset the decreases
in the other components.
We are not trained says Deepak
Obhrai
Ottawa: Deepak Obhrai, Member of
Parliament for Calgary East, made the
following statement on Friday:
"Mr. Speaker, recently we have been
called trained seals and it has been
said we do not have any choice in
representing our constituents. Let
me set the record straight. It has
been a privilege to represent my
constituents who elected me
based on the policies we put
forward. These policies are made
by grassroots members and
elected members together. This
is teamwork. We do not campaign
on our personal agendas.
During my time in Parliament,
since 1997, both in opposition
and government, I have had
numerous opportunities to put
views forward and have input in
public policy. Through caucus and
direct access, we can influence
policies on behalf of our
constituents. This is teamwork. This
approach is what makes one a very
effective representative, and it has
been an honour and a privilege to
do this.
Let me say, Mr. Speaker, this
statement is mine, my own sentiment
and not approved by PMO, or
anybody else."

POLITICAL PARTIES
COME UNDER RTI
ACT: CENTRAL
INFORMATION
COMMISSION
CAN MODI-FIED BJP MODIFY INDIA?
Frenetic,
high-decibel
celebrations broke out among BJP
cadres in Goa and elsewhere
following the announcement that
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra
Modi had been appointed
chairman of the party's election
campaign panel on Sunday.
9th June 2013 marks the beginning
of the Narendra Modi era in the
party, and the eclipse of the
Vajapyee-Advani era that guided
the Jansangh and the BJP for close
to five decades. More so, because
the big announcement was made
by BJP's Rajnath Singh in the
absence of Advani.
Though the voices emanating from
ordinary workers and intermediary
level leaders very strongly rooted
for Modi, his advent on the
national stage was mired by
internal
discord.
The
announcement was a picture
perfect moment in the much talked
about absence of Advani.
The party chief flanked by senior
leaders Sushma Swaraj, Arun
Jaitley, Venkaiah Naidu and others,
all looked more grim than buoyant.
No questions were taken. Even
man of the moment, Modi
preferred to stay inside the hall
than come into the courtyard with
his peers for the announcement
photo-op.
"9th June 2013 marks the
beginning of the Narendra Modi
era in the party, and the eclipse of
the Vajapyee-Advani era that
guided the Jansangh and the BJP
for close to five decades.
However the turn of events in the
last few days have seen two
distinct positives for Modi. The
first is the ground swell of support
that he clearly generates from BJP
party cadre across the country,
which has forced even the RSS to
sing his virtues.
The second, is his sudden rise in
acceptability outside of his party
sympathizers. He is now being
seen as a 'rising sun' by even
sections of his erstwhile critics
who have blasted Advani for
causing obstructions to his
elevation. Modi's charisma is at
work.
Modi has the capacity to transform
this into popular votes for the
party. He also has a great ability to
swing political discourse and
make Congress uncomfortable
with his barbs about Sonia Gandhi,
Rahul Gandhi and Manmohan
Singh.
Some of the ecstatic responses
from party were clearly over the
top and premature, given that the
appointment in itself has only
symbolic value, and in any case,
the merit of the move will be
adjudged as wise only if leads the
BJP onto electoral fortune.
But the spontaneous eruption of
party cadres' sentiments was
perhaps a cathartic release of the
tension that had been building up
over three days over the
perception that the BJP was
deeply divided on investing
campaign authority on Modi, and
that senior party leader LK Advani,
who did not make it to the national
executive meeting, would remotely
spike the move.
Party insiders claim that the
outcome was always known to
those in the loop; to external
observers, however, it looked
every bit like a political cliffhanger.
And
party
foot-soldiers,
particularly those who have
enlisted to serve on Narendra
Modi's Army, were clearly wary
that their boots-on-the-ground
campaign to seek Modi's
elevation would be neutralized by
political skulduggery among the
party's own Delhi Durbar. Which
is why they turned up outside
Advani's door and staged a noisy
and indecorous protest.
The projection of Modi in
messianic terms isn't helpful. The
BJP disowned the Modi Army,
and claimed that the protestors
had been planted by the Congress
to accentuated the rift within the
BJP and to discredit Modi. But the
protestors' with-us-or-against-us
mentality entirely fits in with a
section of Modi's most artlessly
vocal grassroots-level supporters,
who do him more harm than good.
Symbols count for a lot in politics,
which is why Sunday's
appointment is being interpreted
as the first step towards projecting
Modi as the party's prime
ministerial candidate. It's true, of
course, that there have been
instances in the past when the
BJP's election campaign head was
not the party's candidate for the
prime ministership. Additionally,
this time around, as the BJP's
coalition partners in the NDA
made clear on Sunday, the party
must still overcome residual
inhibitions - both within the BJP
and among its NDA allies - to
naming Modi as the NDA
candidate.
But by appointing Modi to head
the campaign panel, the BJP has
played what it reckons is its best
hand to energize cadres, even
while keeping its options about its
prime ministerial candidate for the
2014 election. That strategy
appears to be working for now: the
blare of bugles from the party rankand-file points to an army that
stands ready to march under the
command of their General.
Simultaneously, the BJP's allies from the JD(U), which remains
viscerally opposed to Modi, to the
Shiv Sena - have conceded that
they cannot hope to influence the
BJP's choice of whom it appoints
to head its own election campaign
chief. But, they also added as an
afterthought, that any attempt to
foist Modi on the NDA would be
resisted.
The BJP perhaps calculates that a
campaign spearheaded by Modi
can potentially propel it to a better
electoral position - where it will
have greater leverage over its
alliance partners. That prospect,
while not improbable, must,
however, reckon with the BJP's
organisational weaknesses in
many pockets of India.
11
Such calculations are also
symptomatic of the heightened some would say unrealistically
high - expectations of precisely
what Modi can hope to achieve if
he ever became Prime Minister. It's
one thing to project confidence
and optimism as you prepare your
troops for electoral battle. But it's
not immediately clear that the BJP
or Modi are well served by all this
excessive
euphoria
and
hyperbolic expectations of victory
and the projection of Modi in
messianic terms.
The next round of assembly
elections in Madhya Pradesh,
Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Delhi and
possibly Jharkhand are very
important for the party. Though a
major portion of credit or blame for
victory or defeat would go on a
Shivraj, Raman Singh and
Vasundhara Raje, the election
results will shape Modi 's eventual
poll pitch.
Apart from Gujarat and Goa, the
BJP lately has lost Karnataka,
Himachal Pradesh, Uttarkhand and
Jharkhand. The BJP has to regain
its strength in these states,
particularly in Karnataka where
like UP, the party has been reduced
from number one to number three
position. Modi has to make that
turnaround in UP and Karnataka.
While Modi supporters would
hope that the party soon
designates him PM-in-waiting,
from today onwards Modi
personal office in Gandhinagar is
a parallel power centre, more
powerful than 11 Ashoka Road,
the BJP headquarters.
The main difference between
Modi, Pramod Mahajan and Arun
Jaitley, the two other leaders who
had earlier served as campaign
committee heads, is that while they
were assigned this job out of Delhi
by the leader to pave the way for
an eventual party victor , Modi will
do it for himself to advance to 7
Race Course Road. Until then then
someone else will manage 11
Ashoka Road for him..
Will come out with stand
soon: Nitish on Modi
PATNA: JD(U), which is opposed to Narendra Modi's
projection as BJP's prime ministerial candidate, on Monday said
it will discuss all aspects of his anointment as the campaign
committee chief and will spell out its stand soon. "We have
seen the report and have taken cognisance of the meanings
implied in it. We will discuss it in the party. We will come out
with our stand on the issue after examining the entire situation
and considering all the aspects in the party", Bihar chief minister
Nitish Kumar told reporters. Kumar, who has time and again
expressed his antipathy towards Modi, refused to elaborate
further on the issue, saying no more questions are required on
this subject and advised reporters to keep their questions
pending till JD(U) finalizes its response on the matter. He also
denied reports in a section of media that BJP president Rajnath
Singh had talked to him before the decision on Modi's
anointment. "There was no such conversation between me and
Rajnath Singh. Such reports are baseless. I was in the Seva
Yatra and no such talk could happen," he said.
Asked about JD(U) setting a deadline till November for BJP,
Kumar said, "We will choose the timing."
When repeatedly asked about the time-frame, he replied,
"Soon." JD(U) is the second largest constituent of the BJP-led
NDA and has strong reservations about Modi. Party leaders
have time and again expressed their antipathy to Modi and the
Bihar chief minister has been the most vocal among them.

JAISHANKAR IS PM’S CHOICE FOR
FOREIGN SECY POST
NEW DELHI: The much-vaunted ministry of external affairs
(MEA) is facing a summer of discontent. While there has
been a storm brewing over the appointment of next foreign
secretary for several months, matters seem to have come to
a head now with several top diplomats, including Sujatha Singh
— the senior-most after incumbent Ranjan Mathai — threatening
to resign if they are overlooked in favour of S Jaishankar, India's
ambassador to China and the Prime Minister's Office's choice for
the top job. Mathai is set to demit office next month. It is learnt that
several top diplomats have officially conveyed to the government
that they will quit if their claims are ignored. These include Singh,
the senior-most diplomat after Mathai and India's ambassador to Germany.
Singh was earlier looked upon as a strong contender not just because of her
seniority and an unblemished record but also because she is a woman. So far
only two women — Chokila Iyer and Nirupama Rao — have risen to become
foreign secretary. Singh also has family links with the Congress. Her father T
V Rajeshwar was the director of Intelligence Bureau (IB) who went on to
become UP governor. While Jaishankar, an IFS officer of 1977 batch, has
impeccable credentials and has also served brilliantly in China under difficult
circumstances, he is below several others in the seniority list. Singh and
others have been alarmed by the government move — apparently at the
behest of the PMO — to appoint Jaishankar as the country's top
diplomat. Apart from Singh, there are others like India's High
Commissioner to the UK Jaimini Bhagwati; ambassador to Turkey
Susmita Gongulee Thomas, MEA secretary
(west) Sudhir Vyas and secretary (economic
relations) Pinak Chakraborty. While Singh,
Bhagwati and Thomas are of 1976 batch,
Vyas and Chakraborty are batch-mates of
Jaishankar but senior to him. Most of them
will have only some months of service left
after July, but Singh will still have an entire
year left. While some have made it clear to the
ministry that they will resign, others are saying it
privately. Jaishankar, however, is said to be the
choice of PM Manmohan Singh himself. He is the son of India's most wellknown and respected strategic affairs guru K Subrahmanyam. The fact that
he will come straight from Beijing, where he worked overtime to defuse the
recent eastern Ladakh stand-off, is also tilting the scale in his favour. The
government had considered seniority in the appointment of both Mathai
and his predecessor Nirupama Rao but if it anoints Jaishankar foreign
secretary, it will revisit the 2006 crisis when the PMO chose Shivshankar
Menon over 15 other diplomats. One of those superseded, Veena Sikri, went
to CAT alleging arbitrariness on the part of the PMO. In the case of Jaishankar,
he will supersede six, including India's ambassador to Cyprus. Apart
from Jaishankar and Singh, others too are no less qualified for the
job. A former chief of corporate finance in World Bank, Bhagwati is
an expert on economic issues.
NEW DELHI: The National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC)
is unlikely to get a new lease of life anytime soon with
government making it clear that there were no plans to bring
any law to set up the anti-terror body in the wake of strong
opposition from non-Congress CMs. Home minister
Sushilkumar Shinde said his ministry was not exploring the
option of bringing a bill in Parliament for a wider debate on the
feasibility of the anti-terror body as suggested by Bihar CM
Nitish Kumar. "No, we have no such proposal," Shinde said
when asked about the possibility of bringing a law for setting
up NCTC. Asked whether government was planning to issue
an executive order for NCTC, the home minister said, "We are
not doing anything now. We brought a proposal before the
Chief Ministers. But some of them opposed it. So, there is no
further movement now." Those who are opposing a watereddown proposal for NCTC include CMs Mamata Banerjee (West
Bengal), Nitish Kumar (Bihar), Jayalalithaa (Tamil Nadu),
Narendra Modi (Gujarat), Raman Singh (Chhattisgarh), Shivraj
Singh Chouhan (Madhya Pradesh) and Punjab Deputy Chief
Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. Even Congress CMs Prithviraj
Chavan (Maharashtra), Siddaramaiah (Karnataka) and Tarun
Gogoi (Assam) have expressed reservations to the revised
proposal of the NCTC.

JAMMU: Pakistani troops fired on Indian posts along the Line
of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, the
second ceasefire violation in the past four days. Pakistan troops
opened small arms firing on Indian posts in Nangi Tikri forward
area along LoC in Krishnagati sub-sector of Poonch on Monday
night, defence PRO S N Acharya said on Tuesday. He said the
firing continued for 10 minutes from 8.10pm to 8.20pm. Troops
guarding the borderline did not retaliate, Acharya said, adding
there was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the firing. Troops
are vigilant along the border line and patrolling has been
intensified in view of reports of attempts of infiltration from
across the border. On June 7, a junior commissioned officer
(JCO) was killed when Pakistan opened heavy fire with automatic
weapons and rockets on Indian posts along the LoC in Poonch
sector. Earlier, on May 27, Pakistani troops had pounded Indian
posts along the LoC in the Poonch sector with rockets. A
Brigadier and two jawans were injured on May 24, when Pakistani
troops opened fire on Indian positions along the LoC in Tutmari
Gali sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

AHMEDABAD: The international working president of Vishwa Hindu
Parishad (VHP) Pravin Togadia refrained from making any
controversial statement or launching an attack on Modi, with whom
he does not see eye to eye on many issues. "Appointment of Modi
as chairman of party's campaign committee is BJP's internal matter
and I would not like to make any comment on it. However, it is the
party which is always more important than any individual," he said.
"Whichever party wants to form the government in 2014 will have to
address issues like the Ram Mandir, common civil code and ban on
cow slaughter. We are ready to support even a non-BJP party or
alliance if they adhere to these factors. Togadia was on a "routine

Advani's blessings: Sushma Swaraj
NEW DELHI: Amid worries in the
BJP over resignation of LK
Advani from organisational
posts, senior party leader
Sushma Swaraj has said that
there is no crisis and the party
will move forward with the
blessings of Advani.
Sushma Swaraj, who is the leader
of opposition in Lok Sabha,
tweeted late on Monday night
that that party was united.
Sushma Swaraj had earlier in the
evening taken part in a meeting
of the BJP parliamentary board
at party president Rajnath
Singh's residence here, where
the board rejected Advani's
resignation.
Advani has resigned from the
posts in BJP election committee,
and parliamentary board and the
party's national executive, a day
after the party appointed Gujarat
chief minister Narendra Modi as
chief of BJP's campaign
committee for 2014 elections.
Several party leaders including
Sushma Swaraj met Advani
through the day on Monday to
persuade him to withdraw his
resignation. Some party leaders
also met him after the meeting of
the parliamentary board.
Sushma Swaraj is considered
close to Advani.
CHANDIGARH: Government doctors in Punjab, who had gone
on strike to protest the recent transfer of doctors, called off
their stir after a meeting with state health minister.
Members of Punjab Civil Medical Services ( PCMS) Association,
a body representing a large number of government doctors in
Punjab, held a meeting with health minister Madan Mohan
Mittal on Monday night and called off their stir after he assured
them that their problems would be looked into, official sources
said. Protesting against the state government's decision to
transfer 523 specialist doctors across the state, the doctors had
gone on a two-day strike on Monday, partially affecting health
services in government hospitals. The government had
maintained that the doctors were transferred to strengthen health
services and provide specialist care at 100 designated facilities
in Punjab.

Infighting will weaken BJP:
Samajwadi Party
LUCKNOW: The infighting in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will
weaken it in the coming Lok Sabha election, the Samajwadi Party said
on Tuesday. Party general secretary Naresh Agarwal said the BJP
was bitterly divided over making Gujarat chief minister Narendra
Modi the head of the BJP's election campaign committee, making him
its virtual face in the Lok Sabha battle of 2014. "
Modi may be popular in Gujarat but he certainly does not fit the bill
to make it as prime minister of the country," Agarwal said. The Rajya
Sabha member said the developments in the BJP, Advani's
resignation from party posts following the elevation of Modi as the
chief of the next Lok Sabha election campaign committee, would bring
down the curtains on communal politics in the country.
Six new ministers take

Pichad is from Akole in Ahmednagar, Shinde from
Koregaon in Satara, Sopal from Barshi in Solapur, Uday
Samant from Ratnagiri and Savkhare is from Jalgaon
district. NCP chief Sharad Pawar had last week sought
resignations of all party ministers in the state ministry.
On Monday night, deputy CM Ajit Pawar handed over the
list of ministers to be dropped/inducted to chief minister
Prithviraj Chavan.
Pichad said that those ministers who have been dropped
will be drafted for party work.
NEW DELHI: CBI sources say that they will question Yoga
guru Baba Ramdev soon in the case of mysterious
disappearance of Swami ShankarDev, founder of HaridwarbasedDivyaYogMandir Trust. Officials say Ramdev would be
questioned in a few weeks as they have collected evidence and
questioned others. "Baba Ramdev's questioning is only left now
and it is necessary as well. We have to clarify a lot of things
from him since he was trained by Swami ShankarDev," said a
source. A CBI team is already in Haridwar to investigate this
case. Swami Shankar Dev had gone missing on July 14, 2007,
after he went out for a morning walk in Haridwar. Uttarakhand
Police had registered a case of abduction to probe the
disappearance of Dev, who had been living in Ramdev's ashram.
The FIR was lodged by Balkrishna, a close aide of Ramdev, at
Kankhal police station three days after the Swami went missing
under mysterious circumstances. The agency had also
questioned Balkrishna in the matter recently. CBI had registered
a case under Section 365 of the Indian Penal code against
unknown persons to probe the disappearance of Dev.
Balkrishna is already under the scanner of the Enforcement
Directorate (ED), which booked him under the Prevention of
Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

"At no time was the boat away

and the nation to "let him go". Government officials have given no update on his health since announcing that the 94-year-old was admitted early Saturday
and was in a "serious but stable" condition with a lung infection. "I've seen my father and he's well. He's a fighter," his daughter Zindzi told The Guardian
newspaper on Sunday. But South Africans are beginning to come to terms with the mortality of their first black president and father of the "Rainbow Nation",
following a string of recent health scares. The Sunday Times newspaper's stark front page headline was: "It's time to let him go". It is the fourth hospital stay
since December for the Nobel peace prize laureate, who turns 95 next month, after he was discharged in April following treatment for pneumonia.

US close to deciding
on arming Syrian
rebels: Report
WASHINGTON: The Obama administration could decide this
week to approve lethal aid for Syrian rebels and will weigh the
merits of a less likely move to send in U.S. airpower to enforce
a no-fly zone over the nation wracked by two years of civil
war, officials said Sunday. White House meetings are planned
over the coming days as Syrian President Bashar Assad's
government forces are apparently poised for an attack on the
key city of Homs, which could cut off Syria's armed opposition
from the south of the country and clear a path for the regime
from Damascus to the Mediterranean coast. As many as 5,000
Hezbollah fighters are now in Syria, officials believe, helping
the regime press on with its campaign after capturing the town
of Qusair near the Lebanese border last week. Opposition leaders
have warned Washington that their rebellion could face devastating,
irreversible losses without greater support.
Secretary of State John Kerry postponed a planned trip Monday to
Israel and three other Mideast countries to participate in White House
discussions, said officials who weren't authorized to speak publicly
on the matter and demanded anonymity. U.S. officials said President
Barack Obama was leaning closer toward signing off on sending
weapons to vetted, moderate rebel units. The U.S. has spoken of
possibly arming the opposition in recent months but has been hesitant
because it doesn't want al-Qaida-linked and other extremists fighting
alongside the anti-Assad militias to end up with the weapons. Obama
already has ruled out any intervention that would require U.S. troops
on the ground. Other options such as deploying U.S. air power to
ground the regime's jets, gunships and other aerial assets are now
being more seriously debated, the officials said, while cautioning that
a no-fly zone or any other action involving U.S. military deployments
in Syria were far less likely right now. The president has declared
chemical weapons use by the Assad regime a ``red line'' for more
forceful U.S. action. American allies including France and Britain have
said they've determined with near certitude that Syrian forces have
used low levels of sarin in several attacks, but the administration is still
studying the evidence. The U.S. officials said responses that will be
considered in this week's meetings concern the deteriorating situation
on the ground in Syria, independent of final confirmation of possible
chemical weapons use.

Indian widow can get back war
medal by paying Rs 10 lakh
LONDON: An 80-year-old
Indian woman is close to getting
back her husband's gallantry
medal from England. But it will
come at a hefty price. The high
court in London has ordered that
Kirpa Ram's George Cross be
given back to his widow Brahmi
Devi, who now lives in Himachal
Pradesh.
But the woman, who lives in dire
poverty in Bilaspur district, will
have to shell out £12,000 or Rs
10 lakh to get it.
Ram was given the medal by the
British government for throwing
himself in harm's way to protect
his fellow soldiers when serving
in the British Indian army.
She was married for only a few
days to him, a volunteer in the
13th Frontier Rifles when he was
killed in September 1945. . The
medal

was
awarded
posthumously.
She hadn't sold it for over 50
years but in 2002 the trunk in
which the medal was kept was
stolen from her home in
Himachal.
In 2009, it surfaced at an
auction in London but the
Indian high commission
intervened to stop its sale and
called in Scotland Yard.
Brahmi Devi has till the last

after a legal settlement in

ISLAMABAD: Thirty-five militants and a soldier
have died in fighting in the restive Khyber tribal
region of northwest Pakistan during an operation
to flush out rebels, the military said today.
Five soldiers and 15 militants were also injured in
clashes over the past two days, the Inter-Services
Public Relations said in a brief statement. Security
forces had made "significant gains" over the past
three days and cleared key areas of the Maidan
region of Khyber Agency. Troops have also taken
"full control" of the strategic Derastani Ridge that
overlooks Maidan and Kuki Khel Valley, the
statement said. The operation in the Maidan region was launched after troops cleared Muhammadi
Top in Kurram Agency and Haider Kandao in Tirah Valley of Khyber Aegncy. Security forces also
flushed militants out of the heights of Darwazgai Kandao. The military offensive in Khyber Agency
was launched some weeks ago after dozens of Pakistani Taliban fighters entered the tribal district
and occupied key areas. The latest reports of casualties could not be independently verified as
journalists are barred from the tribal belt.

Suraj is not the villain in Jiah Khan's story
E
ver since the news of
Nafisa alias Jiah Khan's
suicide has surfaced,
days have been very hard on the
Pancholi family. Actor Aditya
Pancholi says his son Suraj, the
late actress's boyfriend, is being
made the "villain" in the story
for no reason.
Jiah, 25, was found hanging in
her Juhu residence June 4. Suraj
is being questioned in the matter
as the actress was reportedly
depressed due to her failing
Bollywood career as well as a
crumbling personal life.
"If Suraj is to be blamed then
please make him the villain,"
says protective father Aditya.
In a recent blog post, writer
Shobhaa
De
recently
commented: "Like father, like
son" in reference to Aditya and
Suraj. Aditya is clearly unhappy.
"What's Shobhaa De's problem
with me and my son? What does
she mean by saying, 'Like father,
like son?' Let the truth come out.
If Suraj has done some wrong,
let it come out. But don't

condemn him in your column for
something he hasn't done.
Everyone has children," said the
hurt father. Taking a deep breath,
Aditya relives the nightmare of
a death so close to the family.
He said: "Suraj ki kya galti hai
(What's Suraj's fault)? They're
probably looking for a villain in
this story, and Suraj has been
selected as the villain of this
story. If you take Raavan out of
the Ramayan, it loses its impact.
What is Sholay without Gabbar
Singh?"
"For the last three days, I've done
what I could do as a concerned
father and the head of my family.
Now I've the space to see what
loss has Jiah's family suffered.
We were there - my son Suraj and
I, for the funeral. Not for a
second did we think we should
stay away just to avoid trouble.
"Jiah and her mother (actress
Rabiya Amin) are our friends. We
are not going to turn our backs
on them just because some
questions are being asked by
some people who don't know the
truth and are only interested in
being judgmental," he added.
Aditya says his son is going
through a rough time.
"Suraj is very hurt and shaken.
But what can he do? I know Suraj
will be fine. But what about Jiah's
mother and sisters? Would they
ever be normal again? Looking
at Suraj's grief, I am reminded of
Jiah's family's grief," he said.
Don't like being tagged as the next superstar: Ranbir Kapoor
Ranbir Kapoor does not prefer being billed as the next superstar and
feels it is unjustified to be equated with the three Khans who
have ruled the marquee for over two decades. Ranbir made his
debut in 2007 with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya, which did
not do well at the box office.
But the actor went on to give strong performances in films like
Bachna Ae Haseeno, Wake Up Sid, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani,
Rocket Singh, Rajneeti, Rockstar, Barfi and his just released, Yeh
Jawaani Hai Deewani, which became a part of 100 crore club.
"I am not here in the industry to beat anyone. I am here to do
good work and make a name for myself, earn respect. I don't
believe in this term of being the next superstar. It means you are
not a superstar but you can become one. I think anyone can
come after me and become a superstar," Ranbir told PTI in an
interview. The 30-year-old actor also feels that it is not jutified to
compare him with the three Khans- Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman.
"If I am compared with Khans I feel bad as they have worked hard
for 25 years... they get so much love, respect from everyone. While
I have just completed five years or so in the industry may be after
25 years I will answer this question. I am no where close to
them, there can't be any comparison. "I don't have a personality
like Salman Khan or Shah Rukh Khan that I can be myself and the
film will be a huge hit. I have to be a character," he added. Since
star ting his career in Bollywood, Ranbir has appeared only in ten
full-fledged films. The actor says he is not multi-talented to do more
than one project at a time.
I
ndia's victories against South
Africa and West Indies in the
first two league matches in
Champions Trophy have helped
them through to the Semi-finals.
Pakistan is out of the Champions
trophy as they have lost both
their opening games against
West Indies and South Africa.
India and Pakistan meet in their
last league game on Saturday
though the game will be very
interesting but ill have no effect
on the race to Semi-final.
Pakistan put in a decent bowling
performance but are let down by
their frail batting line-up
Shikar Dhawan, Ravinder Jadeja,
Dinesh Kartik and Rohit Sharma
have really played well for India.
Ravindra Jadeja produced the
best bowling figures by an
Indian in the ICC Champions
Trophy (5 for 36) as India kept
West Indies to 233 for 9.
There is discussion that Is Shikhar
Dhawan and Rohit Sharma the
right opening pair for India?
They have shown good
combination in the opening
match of the Champions Trophy
with a 127-run stand. And then
another Opening century stand
against West Indies. Some still
believe Gambhir, Sehwag can
stage a comeback and there is
Murali Vijay as well. Two
matches are too early to judge
Let them perform consistently
on all kinds of wickets and
conditions. The Left right
combination of Shikhar Dhawan
and Rohit Sharma are certainly
firing from all cylinders at this
moment.
Team India Captain MS Dhoni
has Said "Overall a very good
performance, WI got to a very
good start, they seemed like they
would get 280 runs or so, our
bowlers did very well after that,
our bowlers were able to keep
the batsmen at their respective
ends, didn't let them rotate
easily. You think I know him
(Jadeja) well, but even I'm
finding out over a period of time.
I think the execution was not really
there (at the death). We'd been
happy with 230 at the outset. I think
the young batsmen have accepted
the challenge, Dhawan did well in
the Tests, Rohit took up the
challenge of opening the batting,
also it helps that we have changed
into a very good fielding side. I
don't think Indian team has
every played a dead game, I think
it is also important in areas where
we want to improve."

that being perfect is boring
and wants to continue to
grow with every film.
Sonakshi, who is known for
the hit films like "Rowdy
Rathore" and "Dabangg",
said at the music launch of
her film "Lootera": "I am far
from perfect. I regard perfect
as boring," she said held

been directed by
Vikramaditya Motwane and

done a fantastic job of
directing the film and

emotions," she said.
The actress also added that
when she was narrated the
script, she could not think
of anyone else who could
do the part.
"Usually I can picture other
actresses when I am being
narrated the script. Here I

for me. I knew that this
would be the most
challenging film for me," she
said.
Talking about preparation
for her role, the actress said
that she never really
prepares for her characters.
"I don't really prepare for
my roles. I can't act unless I
am in front of the camera.
My character goes through
a lot of ups and downs and
the best preparation was to
talk to my director and
understand the character,"
she said.
Sonakshi also added that
director Vikramaditya
Motwane was the best
director she has worked
with.
"I am here to admit that
Vikram is the best director I

Policegiri will do good business
T

who will soon be seen in Sanjay Dutt-starrer action film Policegiri,
says although her co-star won't be there for promotions, she is
confident about the film's good business.Currently, Sanjay is in jail
to serve his remaining jail
term in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case. Prachi believes his fans
will definitely watch the film.In Policegiri, produced by T.P. Aggarwal
and his son Rahul and directed by K.S. Ravikumar, Sanjay plays a
tough yet charismatic police officer. "I have to say that everyone
(film's crew and the cast) will do their best. It's unfortunate what has
happened. We do understand that but, at the same time, we are
doing our best. I am sure there are people who love him (Sanjay) for
what he is," Prachi said here in an interview.
They are still going to go to the theatre (to watch Sanjay's film
Policegiri) no matter whether he goes to their cities to promote the
film or not," she added. Prachi further said she "just believes in the
love the people have for him (Sanjay)".
Meanwhile, Prachi is excited about her look in the film. After being
seen in ultra-modern look in her last release I, Me Aur Main, this
time her character is more "colourful" and "approachable". "There
is no particular look, but we have tried our best to keep it as young
and colourful and as approachable for people," said the 24-year-old.
"I am just happy experimenting with looks and with Policegiri, I
guess I am getting a chance to do that again." Slated to release July
5, Policegiri also features Prakash Raj and Om Puri. Besides, Salman

Maharaj, feels honoured
that she would dance with
him but is nervous at the
same time. The legendary
Kathak guru and his disciple
will soon be seen in a
special jugalbandi act on
the dance reality show
Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. "I am
happy and honoured that I
will be dancing with him in
Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. I am
afraid...getting butterflies in
my stomach. I am nervous if
I would be able to match up
to him. I will treasure this
moment," Madhuri told
reporters at the launch of
the show.
The two will perform
together for the first time on
television. The classical
dancer choreographed
Madhuri's songs in Devdas
(2002) and Dil To Pagal Hai
(1997), and recently did a
song for her upcoming film
Dedh Ishqiya. Meanwhile,
Madhuri said she is excited
to judge yet another season
of Jhalak Dikhla Jaa.
"I like the show as it brings
out interesting journey of
contestants. I think anyone
can dance but it is important
to put your heart and soul
for a performance," she
said.
The show will go on air from
Madhuri Dixit, who turns
46 today, says that
people still remember
her as Mohini - the
character she played in
Tezaab. Actor Ranbir
Kapoor certainly enjoyed the Madhuri's
item song in his upcoming film Yeh Jawaani Hai
Deewani.
June 1.
The other two judges will be
Remo D'Souza and Karan
Johar. "This season, the
competition will be more as
we have interesting range of
contestants. I will judge
them on the basis of
entertainment," Karan said.
The opening episode will
see Dharmendra, Sunny and
Bobby Deol shaking a leg
with the contestants to
promote their film Yamla
Pagla Deewana 2. "Dharamji
has a unique style of
dancing and he is best at it.
No one can dance the way
he does," Karan said.
Madhuri will team up with
Ranbir Kapoor to perform on
the item number Ghagra from
the film Yeh Jawaani Hai
Deewani. "He (Ranbir) is a
talented actor and a very
good dancer. He is energetic
and I had a blast dancing
with him," Madhuri said.
Rishi Kapoor is a public
property: Ranbir Kapoor
Actor Ranbir Kapoor feels his father Rishi Kapoor is still
energetic and excited about doing films. "Rishi Kapoor, apart
from being my father, is a public property. He is amazing and my
favourite actor. After having a career spanning across 30 years
it is like a new beginning as he is doing interesting character
roles. And whatever he is doing, he does it with sincerity and
passion," Ranbir said during an interview here recently.
Ranbir says his 60-year-old father is even today passionate
and serious about his work. "Today also he is more passionate
about his work. I like his approach. He gets immense pleasure in
doing films than any other thing. And if you have this attitude
then you will definitely succeed," he said. Ranbir is all praises
for his father's performance in Aurangzeb. "I am hearing good
things about him in the film. He is a brilliant actor," he said.
Ranbir, who would be sharing screen space with his parents
Rishi and Neetu in Abhinav Kashyap's upcoming film,
Besharam, says he has learnt a lot from them. "For the first time
I am shooting with them and it was a good experience. It is like
a family get together. I have learnt a lot from them by seeing and
observing them," he said.
Dharmendra, Bobby
Deol to explore fatherson relationship
Director Sangeeth Sivan will explore the intricate relationship
between a father and a son on a road trip in his upcoming film,
Cheers, which will star Dharmendra and Bobby Deol in lead
roles. Deols, under their home banner Vijeta Films, will produce
Cheers, whose makers had been reportedly working on the
idea for nearly two years."We have been working on this film
for quite some time. Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 happened and
hence things got a bit delayed. But the film is not shelved, we
will start working on it soon and we are quite excited to make it.
Cheers explores relationship between a father-son duo on a
road trip," Sivan told . Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, an action comedy
directed by Sivan and featuring Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby
Deol, releases on June 7. Shooting for Cheers is likely to begin
in September- October, but the makers are yet to zero in on the
leading lady. "We don't have any names in mind. We would
have two heroines. Once Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 is released
we will focus on Cheers," Sivan said.

Tim Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan smiled the last smiles.
NEW ZEALAND SURVIVE MALINGA
MAGIC IN THRILLER
NEW ZEALAND 139 FOR 9 (N MCCULLUM 32, MALINGA 4-34) BEAT SRI LANKA
138 (SANGAKKARA 68, MCCLENAGHAN 4-43, MILLS 2-14) BY 1 WICKET
L
asith Malinga took the 22
yards out of the equation
in a low-scoring thriller,
but New Zealand survived him
to register their first win over Sri
Lanka in four years. The pitch
has hardly ever mattered less. It
was flat, the sun was out, the ball
was not swinging, but Malinga's
dipping slower full tosses had
New Zealand batsmen hopping
and hoping in what was expected
to be an afternoon stroll. Nathan
McCullum, first, and then Tim
Southee batted with just the
maturity
New
Zealand
desperately needed to see them
through with one wicket in hand.
The
chase
swung
dramatically. From coasting at 48
for 1 New Zealand stumbled to
49 for 4. From 70 for 4 they fell
to 80 for 6, but then, crucially,
they were allowed to get away
with a relatively quieter phase
when Malinga was taken off
and brought back only after
brothers McCullum had taken
off 31 off the requirement.
Malinga came back and seemed
like he could strike with every
ball, but Sri Lanka will be left
asking themselves - especially
because Malinga brought them
so close - if they had kept
Malinga's four overs back for
too long.
DRS, or the way it was
used by the sides, made its
presence felt too. Kane
Williamson wasted New
Zealand's review by asking for
a replay when he was caught
dead plumb by a thigh-high
dipping full toss. Daniel Vettori
later copped a rough one when
he had hit another similar full
toss into his pad. Sri Lanka had
exhausted theirs early in the
innings, and had to do with two
not-outs towards the end that
they could have got overturned
on replay.
Amid loud unending
appeals almost every ball, it
was supreme drama with the
balls remaining taken out of the
equation: New Zealand still
won with 13.3 overs to spare
and took a bigger net-run-rate
boost than England did in their
facile win over Australia.
Going by how they went
either side of the lunch break their chase began early
because they had bowled Sri
Lanka out in 2 hours and 55
minutes - New Zealand should
have finished it much earlier. It
was all going swimmingly for
them until Malinga got
Williamson in the eighth over.
In the next couple of overs,
Rangana Herath and Shaminda
Eranga - preferred to Sachithra
Senanayake
and
Nuwan
Kulasekara - struck. Herath
trapped Ross Taylor with one
that went on with the arm, and
Eranga got one to bounce from
short of a length outside off,
taking the edge from Martin
Guptill, who had raced away to
25 from 24.
Still it should have been
easy for New Zealand, but they
fumbled further to spin.
Tillakaratne Dilshan and Herath
almost cut out all singles, and
Dilshan got James Franklin with
the right-arm spinner's version
of the earlier Taylor dismissal.
Sri Lanka were now sensing
room for a miracle here, and
brought Malinga back for his
sixth over. On cue he struck,
but Vettori could not get the
obvious howler overturned
because his team-mate had
earlier challenged a call he was
merely not sure about.
Strangely, though, Malinga
was taken off immediately after
he took Vettori's wicket. When
he was brought back, New
Zealand had reached 111 for 6,
needing only a further 28. Both
Brendon McCullum and
Nathan McCullum had been
allowed to take the singles, and
they did so. The period did
involve a thin edge from N
McCullum in the 28th over
when the score read 100, but
only the keeper heard it. Even
the bowler Eranga hardly
appealed. Did the excessive
appealing leading up to that Sri Lanka had been spoken to
at the end of the 21st over have any part to play in that
decision? We will never know.
It is credit to Malinga's
genius, though, that he came
back and immediately took B
McCullum out with another one
of his loopy, alarmingly dipping
full tosses. B McCullum played
all across it, and the ball
reached the off stump on a halfvolley. New Zealand now
needed 24 runs with three
wickets in hand. Quite clearly,
it was Malinga v New Zealand,
and you wonder if it would
have been different if it had
been 44 runs to play with, and
not 24.
Malinga, however, kept
producing the magic. In his
next over, he took out the other
McCullum, who had wizened
up to the slower ball, with a
quick inswinging yorker. New
Zealand still had 17 to get, and
Malinga had 2.4 overs to go.
The next four balls were a
slower yorker, a quick yorker, a
slower length ball, and another
slower yorker, all on target.
This was insanely good
bowling, and Tim Southee and
Kyle Mills somehow survived.
As they did the next over, from
Herath.
Malinga now had 12 balls
to bowl, and 11 runs to defend.
He began the 34th over with a
quick inswinging length ball,
which was only clipping leg,
and the umpire Bruce Oxenford
ruled not out. He had ruled N
McCullum out on a similar
delivery, and under DRS both
decisions stand. However, the
next one would have been
changed by DRS. It hit Southee
on the toe plumb in front, went
to the third-man boundary for
four, but Tucker called it runs. It
was a huge moment in the game.
Not only did New Zealand not
lose Southee, the target was now
down to eight.
Much cha t t e r w e n t o n .
The players had to be
separated at the end of the
over. Southee was not losing
h i s c o o l, though. The same
couldn't be said of Mills.
Southee dug one out towards
mid-on in the next over, and took
the fielder on. Thisara Perera
missed the stumps at the nonstriker's end narrowly, but he
was lucky the ball went to hit
the other set of stumps.
Mills, though, was not
desperate to make it, and was
caught short. New Zealand still
needed five, and Malinga had
one over to go.
Marlon Samuels is still waiting for his copy of the Wisden
Almanack. One of the five
Cricketers of the Year,
Samuels was shor tlisted for
the honour after his commanding performance during
the three-Test series last May
in England where he was the
top run scorer in The Wisden
Trophy with one century and
three fifties.
It was the one of the first times
Samuels had handled the responsibility of being a senior
batsman. It carried much
more meaning for Samuels
personally because finally he
made the headlines for
cricketing reasons, his twoyear ICC ban forgotten. Even
though West Indies lost the
series 2-0, Samuels dominated the formidable England bowling attack with a combination of calmness and anger. Little wonder then he is anxious to
get hold of the hallowed yellow brick.
Twelve months down the line Samuels is back in England, his
reputation enhanced after his heroics in the final of the World
Twenty20, which formed the backbone for West Indies' first
world title in nearly two decades. Yet despite his match-winner status, Samuels curiously remains unconvincing in ODIs.
Somehow, despite being one of the few Caribbean batsmen to
possess the right combination of flair, patience and bravado,
Samuels has betrayed his talent.
On the handful of occasions he has succeeded, it has coincided with West Indies victories: Samuels averages 49.54 in
matches West Indies have won with all his four centuries
coming in team victories. In 2012, he scored 482 runs at 32.12
from 16 ODI innings, including two centuries; his overall career average is 30.84. But in the Champions Trophy, Samuels
has failed - he has scored only 71 runs from eight innings. His
performance in England in ODIs is also mediocre - an aggregate of 159 runs from six innings.
Srinivasan set to be dropped
from disciplinary committee
The BCCI's working committee is likely to drop board president N Srinivasan from the disciplinary committee, reducing
it to a two-member panel, during the meeting in Delhi on Monday. The working committee is also likely to hand over the
probe of the complaint against Rajasthan Royals co-owner
Raj Kundra to the two-member commission comprising two
former High Cour t judges.
The committee will also examine the findings of BCCI's
Anti-Corruption and Security Unit chief Ravi Sawani in the
alleged spot-fixing case against the three Royals cricketers and his recommendations.
Kundra, who owns 11.7% stake in the parent company of
Royals, admitted to betting on his team's matches, according to Delhi Police commissioner Neeraj Kumar. However, unlike Gur unath Meiyappan, a team management
member of Chennai Super Kings and son-in-law of
Srinivasan who was arrested by Mumbai Police on similar charges before being released on bail, Kundra hasn't
been arrested. As a result, the working committee will
mostly likely forward the complaint against Kundra to the
commission that was appointed to probe three previous
complaints.

RAMDIN CHARGED
FOR CLAIMING
MISBAH CATCH
Team-mates praise Ashraful for admitting guilt
M
ohammad Ashraful
has continued to be
the
subject
of
discussion at all levels of the
public sphere in Bangladesh
over the last four days. Some of
his national team-mates have
also weighed in, expressing their
surprise at his admission of
involvement in match-fixing and
spot-fixing during the BPL.
Shakib Al Hasan said he
had also heard questions about
February's BPL match between
Dhaka
Gladiators
and
Chittagong Kings, but wasn't
around the players' dugout long
enough to understand the
situation. "After the match
everyone was talking about it.
The opposition players were
asking us, 'so you've thrown the
game?' Shakib told the Dhakabased Prothom Alo. "They were
asking questions about Dhaka's
slow batting and the big no-ball
(by Gladiators' Mahbubul Alam).
"I was not present in the
dugout for too long. I was
working on my injury inside the
dressing room. Since I didn't
play that game, I can't be sure
how difficult the wicket was for
batting."
Shahriar Nafees, a student
of the same cricket academy
where Ashraful began his career,
lauded his courage to speak the
truth,
but
wanted
just
punishment for the guilty. "This
is a sad chapter in Bangladesh
cricket." Nafees said. "I have to
compliment his courage to come
out and confess. I am feeling bad
for him, but if he has committed
the crime, he has to be punished
appropriately."
Mushfiqur
Rahim, Ashraful's Bangladesh
captain for the last two years,
sent him a text message that said:
'Allah will be looking after you
for being able to gather the
courage to confess your guilt
before you die. Thanks for the
honesty you have shown and I
hope you will again return to the
cricket field.'
Other team-mates like
Enamul Haque jnr and Alok
Kapali also spoke out. "I was
totally shocked when I read
about it in the newspaper," said
Enamul, now playing for
Wolverhampton
in
the
Birmingham Cricket League. "It
seemed like someone close to
you was going far away as I
heard his confession."
Kapali, who was among 13
Bangladeshi cricketers who left
for the Indian Cricket League in
2008 and was ostracised as a result,
had a different message for Ashraful.
"I am feeling bad for him but I don't
think we need so much money in
our life that we need to get involved
in fixing." Kapali said. "Look at
Shakib, he is playing the world over.
If you play well, money will follow
you."
'IPL IS HERE TO STAY' - BCCI SECRETARY
S
anjay Patel, the newly
appointed
BCCI
secretary, has said the
Indian Premier League has a
place in cricket despite the recent
arrests and allegations relating
to spot-fixing and betting.
"IPL is here to stay. There
are external problems in the
league and we are going to
address each and every element
before next year," Patel told the
Times of India. "Jagmohan
Dalmiya (the interim BCCI
president) is known to take tough
steps and with so many senior
officials around, I don't think
these recent events can stall the
league. Cricket is bigger than
individuals." India fast bowler
Sreesanth and his Rajasthan
Royals team-mates Ankeet
Chavan and Ajit Chandila were
arrested for alleged indulgence
in spot-fixing and consequently
suspended by the BCCI.
Gurunath Meiyappan, son-inlaw of the then BCCI president
N Srinivasan and a top
management official of the
Chennai Super Kings, was
arrested on charges of betting,
fraud and forgery and Raj
Kundra, co-owner of Rajasthan
Royals confessed to betting as
well. Treasurer Ajay Shirke,
secretary Sanjay Jagdale and
IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla
resigned from their posts and
Srinivasan temporarily stepped
aside as president at a BCCI
Working Committee meeting in
Chennai, until a two-man
independent
committee
reached
a
verdict
on
Meiyappan and Kundra's
transgressions.
"We will initiate a stricter
code of conduct for the
cricketers." said Patel, who is
joint secretary of the Baroda
Cricket Association and
member of the IPL governing
council. "We stopped the aftermatch parties a long time ago.
The BCCI had nothing to do
with the get together that was
happening during the IPL
season. The BCCI can't allow
anything that is tarnishing the
image of the league."
He also directed attention to
other aspects of the BCCI and
Indian cricket. "Apart from the
IPL, everything in the board is
functioning well. Our cricket
team is doing well in England and
there are no worries with the
day-to-day working of the board.
There is also a probe committee
which is looking into the IPL."
The committee's decision is
likely to be announced after the
Working Committee meeting in
New Delhi on June 10.
West Indies wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin has been charged
with breaching the ICC Code of Conduct for claiming a catch off
Misbah-ul-Haq during the Champions Trophy match against
Pakistan at The Oval. Ramdin has pleaded not guilty and will
attend a hearing on Monday.
Ramdin was charged with breaching ar ticle 2.2.11 of the ICC
Code of Conduct for Players and Player Suppor t Personnel,
which relates to "conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the
game". The range of penalties for all first Level 2 breaches are
fines of between 50-100% of a player's match fees and/or suspension for up to two ODIs.
The incident took place in the ninth over of the Pakistan innings, when Misbah bottom-edged a Kemar Roach delivery to
Ramdin. The wicketkeeper initially appeared to have caught
the ball but lost control of it as he fell forward, and it slipped out
of his gloves on to the grass. Instead of bringing his mistake to
the notice of the umpires or his team-mates, Ramdin returned
the ball to the square-leg umpire and joined his team-mates in
the celebratory huddle.
Square-leg umpire Nigel Llong, however, aler ted the third umpire
and the replay revealed the chance had been dropped. Misbah,
who was on 0, was called back and went on to hit an unbeaten
96. Misbah later said Ramdin's actions were not in the spirit of
the game. "What can I say about that?" he said when asked
about the catch. "I think he should have told them what happened, but I don't know what he was thinking at that time. I
would not be very happy if my wicketkeeper did that.
"If we don't know anything, then it's fine, but if you know clearly
that it's not a catch, you should not claim that because it's not
in the spirit of the game."
West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo, however, defended Ramdin,
saying the wicketkeeper did not act deliberately. "Unfortunately,
he did not catch it," Bravo said. "He's a very honest player, and
as I said, history shows if you check the records that we don't
have any stigma or negatives around us as a team. We have
been true in our cricket careers and history has shown that we
play the game in true spirit of the way it should be played. I
don't think we did something like this deliberately."
