Getting to know the the LG Health Hub
Website features blogs, recipes and more written by our health experts for
you and our community
Since its launch nearly six months ago, the LG Health Hub
has provided more than 200 blogs, recipes, videos and more
that focus on health, wellness and prevention.
“People really want to take a more active role in their
health,” said Lisa Hess, Vice President of Marketing,
Corporate Communications and Customer Engagement.
“The Health Hub is about common conditions that people
are trying to understand on a daily basis.”
The Health Hub, available at LGHealthHub.org, features
content written by LG Health/Penn Medicine physicians
and clinical employees with special areas of interest.
Each focuses on topics that are timely and relevant to the
community.
“This is a way for LG Health/Penn
Medicine to engage consumers with
topics that are important to them,”
Hess continued. “We want to create
a relationship through a two-way
conversation.”

Meet some of the LG Health
bloggers.
As a registered dietitian with the
Diabetes and Nutrition Center,
Stephanie Prestileo, RD, LDN, focuses
her blogs on diabetic health, including
how sugar can be part of a diabeteshealthy diet, as well as recipes, like
homemade ketchup.
Jacqui Zimmerman, RD, Community Health Dietitian, has
written more than a dozen blogs focused on health and
wellness. More recently, her October blogs focused on five
ways to get calcium from a non-dairy source, tips for healthy
soup making and tricks to treating your family to a healthy
Halloween.

In the past four months, the Health Hub has averaged over
7,500 unique views. “ ‘Can a brain heal itself after a stroke?’
by Dr. Jon Bentz is still one of the most viewed blogs,” the
team shared, “with blogs focused on breast health being the
second and third most viewed for the month of October.”
Ideas for new Health Hub posts come from a combination of
current events and statistical data. Using the data, the Web
Services team can identify what Health Hub visitors are most
interested in, and help guide contributors as they create
their blog, video or recipe.

patients reduce financial distress
Cancer Patient Support Fund receives
Innovator Award
The Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute (ABBCI) was recognized with
the Innovator Award from the Association of Community Cancer
Centers (ACCC) in October. Now in its fifth year, the Innovator
Award recognizes forward-thinking organizations that present case
studies of their experience running a new program, implementing
a new technology or fostering innovations that aim to change the
way oncology care is delivered.
LG Health has
successfully pursued
quality and safety initiatives for many years, but
there is still work to be done. The case for keeping
patient safety our highest priority is compelling.

Here are just a few reasons why it’s so important:
• On any given day, 1 out of every 20 patients in
American hospitals is affected by a hospitalacquired infection.
• Among chronically ill adults, 22 percent report
a “serious error” in their care.
• 1,800 people living in nursing homes die each
year from falls.
• And nearly 1 in 5 Medicare hospital patients is
readmitted within 30 days.
Fortunately, these alarming statistics do not
describe LG Health. But we must remain diligent
in our efforts to broadly deploy our resources to
ensure that we provide the safest possible care.
No matter where you work in our health system,
it’s important to stay vigilant. If you notice a
potential hazard – or have a suggestion for
improving safety – please share your concerns with
your manager or at a staff meeting. If you would
prefer to remain anonymous, use the Compliance
Hotline, 1-888-411-3380.
In the spirit of our Teamwork & Trust, Quality and
Personal Integrity values, we all share responsibility
for keeping patients, visitors and each other safe.
Stay alert and speak up. By working together, we
can prevent harm before it occurs.

ABBCI was recognized for the implementation of the Cancer Patient
Support Fund. Working with the local community, ABBCI created
the program for patients experiencing financial distress. Oncology
supportive services providers and members of the Lancaster
General Health Foundation developed comprehensive funding
guidelines and tools, including a financial tracking spreadsheet and
process map.
“The philosophy at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute is to
take care of the whole person, not just addressing their clinical
problems or issues,” said Patti Roda, Oncology Clinical Support
Manager, in a video submitted to the ACCC. “It’s really looking at
them as a person, (as well as) their family or significant others and
taking care of them also.”
