Lawrence Township families, both new and returning. We are grateful that you
have entrusted your child’s education to us and have much to look forward to as we move in to the
2016-2017 school year. It is the ongoing commitment of our excellent staff (teachers, building leaders,
central office, bus drivers, food service workers, custodial staff) that facilitates an outstanding educational
experience for your child.
As we move toward the start of the academic year, it is important that you connect with both the district
and your child’s school. We pride ourselves in open and transparent communication with stakeholders,
and know that ongoing conversation with your child’s school is imperative in ensuring that your student’s
needs are met.
You will hear from us often about great things happening in the district. We want to hear from you, too!
Through newsletters, our website, mobile app, and social media, we pledge to keep you informed.
Everything from Back to School Nights and Open Houses, to our Strategic Plan, Blue Ribbon Facilities, and
Parent Engagement Program.
Because of the Excellence of Lawrence students and educators, we are one of the fastest growing school
districts in the state of Indiana. I am excited to begin another school year in our district, and it is an honor
to serve the students and families of Lawrence Township!
Sincerely,
Dr. Shawn A. Smith

Lawrence North Athletics Has Two Alumni Going To Rio
Lawrence North will have two athletes
representing the United States in the 2016
Olympic Games in Rio! Former Wildcats Ashley
Spencer (2011) and Felisha Johnson (2008)
have both earned a spot on the United States
Olympic Team! Both athletes were IHSAA
champions for Lawrence North as well as NCAA
champions.
At the U.S. Olympic Trials in Oregon, Spencer
finished 2nd in the 400m hurdles while Johnson
finished third in the shot put. The top three in
both events qualified for a spot on the team. During the trials, Spencer accomplished something no one in
the history of USA Track & Field, men or women, has ever done - final in both the 400m run and the 400m
hurdles. She just missed the Olympics in the 400m run, finishing 7th (top 6 earn a spot on the relay). She
overcame that run with an outstanding effort in the finals of the 400m hurdles, capturing 2nd from lane 8 to
punch her ticket to Rio!
Johnson was a two time NCAA champ for Indiana State, while Spencer won two NCAA championships at Illinois before transferring to Texas. Way to go, ladies! We are so proud of you both!! Go USA!!
