Dishan Harper. All were members of Atlanta’s Troop 246 as youths. Finally, Life Scout and Arrowman
Benjamin Oglesby-Davis, 17, is a member of Atlanta’s Troop 532. He is a skilled jazz guitarist who also

John C. Whitehead
New York City, New York
Inspiring Leader, Visionary Statesman, Distinguished Eagle Scout
In his eulogy to the late John C. Whitehead, Dr. Henry
Kissinger remembered being the only non–Eagle
Scout among Mr. Whitehead’s dinner guests. “Ever
gracious,” said Dr. Kissinger, “John postponed until
after dinner to draw my attention to this anomaly.”
John Whitehead, who passed away on Feb. 7, 2015,
was involved with Scouting for 80 years. “He knew
what Scouting had done for him, and he repaid
more than fully so that other boys could share in
the camping and character-building activities that
Scouting provides,” noted Alair Townsend, former
publisher of Crain’s New York Business.
For decades, Mr. Whitehead served the Greater
New York Councils as board chair, president, and
trustee. “For his 92nd birthday last year,” wrote Ms.
Townsend, “we surprised him at his office with a
group of Scouts bringing cupcakes and singing to
him. There were broad smiles all around, as John
told the boys about his difficulties in passing the
Scout swimming test, and the Scouts reveled in
the presence of a national hero who on D-Day
commanded five landing crafts onto Omaha
Beach as part of the first wave of the Normandy
invasion.” Mr. Whitehead had served in the U.S.
Navy during World War II.
Among his Scouting honors were the Silver Beaver
and Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. He was a
James E. West Fellow. Yet when asked to name his
proudest Scouting achievement, Mr. Whitehead
replied: “Obtaining the Swimming merit badge,
which took several tries, and highlighted the
importance of perseverance, enabling me to attain
Eagle Scout.” He also found satisfaction in promoting
the values and experiences of Scouting and Exploring
to the diverse neighborhoods of New York City.
The former Goldman Sachs co-chairman served
as deputy secretary of state in the Reagan
administration. In the aftermath of the terrorist
attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the New York State
governor asked Mr. Whitehead to chair the Lower
Manhattan Development Corporation, which was
tasked with rebuilding all of lower Manhattan. He
served numerous civic and charitable causes with
distinction around the globe, including chairing the
International Rescue Committee.
Mr. Whitehead is survived by his wife, Cynthia;
his daughters, Anne and Sarah; his son, J.
Gregory Whitehead; two granddaughters; seven
stepchildren; and 18 step-grandchildren. His
thoughtful and generous Scouting leadership left
an indelible mark on hundreds of millions of young
people and their families.

Andrew J. Young
Atlanta, Georgia
Civil Rights Leader, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Human Rights Champion
Ambassador Andrew J. Young fondly recalls
being given his first Scout handbook when
he was a young boy. He says that having
been introduced to the strong, well-written
code of the Scout Oath and Scout Law was
important to him and should be a gift that
every boy receives.
Ambassador Young is a lifelong advocate
for youth programs and youth development.
To select one singular action that represents
his leadership would be impossible; there
are too many examples. As an illustration,
Ambassador Young was asked by the YMCA
of Metropolitan Atlanta to help establish
programs for youth in an underserved
portion of the city. In response, he personally
funded the Andrew and Walter Young
Family YMCA of Atlanta. Additionally, he
helped to found and support the Andrew
Young International Academy for Leadership
Development at the Dryades YMCA in
New Orleans, Louisiana. The academy is an
active program for youth today that teaches
leadership and character development.
Named executive director of the Southern
Christian Leadership Conference in 1964, Mr.
Young worked with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. as a top lieutenant and strong right
arm throughout the American Civil Rights
movement. His own life was put on the line
many times, and he was at the Lorraine
Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4,
1968, when Dr. King’s life was brought to a
tragic and early end.
2015
SILVER
In 1972, Mr. Young was elected as the first
African American to represent Georgia in
the U.S. Congress since Reconstruction and
served three terms. In 1977, he was appointed
by President Jimmy Carter as the first African
American to serve as U.S. ambassador to
the United Nations. Ambassador Young
was elected mayor of Atlanta in 1981 and
served as chairman of the Atlanta Organizing
Committee. He was highly instrumental
in Atlanta being selected as the host city
for the 1996 Centennial Summer Olympic
Games. In 2003, he founded the Andrew J.
Young Foundation to support and promote
education, world health, leadership, and
human rights. He is also an Emmy Award–
winning documentary filmmaker.
Ambassador Young was awarded the
Presidential Medal of Freedom by President
Carter. Among his Scouting recognitions is the
Atlanta Area Council’s Bobby Jones Award
for outstanding community leadership. He has
served as nominating committee chairman
for several Atlanta districts.
Ambassador Young has been married to
civic leader Carolyn McLain Young for nearly
20 years. He has four children, Andrea, Lisa,
Paula, and Andrew Young III, and eight
grandchildren from his marriage to his first
wife, Jean Childs Young, who passed away
in 1994. Ambassador Young and Carolyn
make their home in Atlanta, Georgia.

contributions” to their local communities or the nation through their careers,
avocations, and Scouting.
Who Is a BSA Alumnus?
An alumnus is anyone who is or has been positively and personally impacted by the
