Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope!
oday we will conclude a monthlong series of sermons under the
heading “CoExist”. Today’s sermon
is called “Playing in the Sandbox Together!”
Throughout this month we have been
challenged to find ways in which
we can live together in peace and
harmony in a religiously pluralistic
world. We have been called to be
accountable and responsible for our
own faith, and to become spiritually
mature as followers of Jesus.
“Playing in the Sandbox Together” is a call to go beyond the dogmas of religion—dogmas that have been used to “divide and conquer”—to bring to
mind the values that we hold in common and to create a world where people
count. We know that our dogmatic approach to religion keeps us from “loving
one another as God loves us”. Perhaps it is the greatest system of oppression
that people of faith today are holding on to in what has been termed a “culture
war” here in the United States. Perhaps the fear of “the other” and the fear
that someone else’s relationship with God is as valid as our own threatens our
security or our faith today.
As a Christian church, we affirm our belief in Jesus Christ, his leadership and
his teachings. These teachings are as valid today as they were in Jesus’ day.
Jesus was never afraid to cross boundaries of race, culture, color, or religion.
Speaking to women, Samaritans, the Roman soldier and others clearly demonstrates his ability to CoExist.
As we meet here at Cathedral of Hope, we too CoExist; while we all might
identify as Christian, we come from many different religious backgrounds and
experiences. We are Roman Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, United Church of
Christ, Lutheran, Episcopal, Pentecostal—in fact we probably represent every
religious background conceivable. If we hope to CoExist with others in the
world, we must first CoExist here!
As we worship today, I pray that we can model our ability to “play in the sandbox together” and hope that we can do so with others as well.

This Mexican folk song
promotes racial understanding
and cooperation. The first
stanza speaks of the colors of
nature, and the second of the
different colors of the people of
the earth.
The song, originally written
in Spanish, has become a
rally song for the United Farm
Workers movement.
The tune, DE COLORES, takes
its name from the text. It is
commonly performed with
guitars and trumpets in
Mariachi style. Recent years
have witnessed the use of
secular musical styles in the
churches of Mexico, including
the Mariachi mass, with guitars

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with
Christ. For we were all born by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or
free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of
many. Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not
for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not anWorship

belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an
eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of
smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as God wanted them
to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one
body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t
need you!” On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the
parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable
are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has
put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no
division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers,
every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of
Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second
prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different
kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have
gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet
I will show you the most excellent way.

This well-known Anthem with words and music by Allen Pote is a choral prayer for unity addressed to God. Although we are many different people with
many different gifts, we are reminded of what we hold in common, which is that we are all members of the family of God on unique spiritual journeys
that lead to God’s throne. Allen Pote (b. 1945) was born in Kansas and educated at Texas Christian University. A Fulbright Scholar, he studied in Brussels,
Belgium, and took advanced work at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He is currently a full-time composer living in Pensacola, Florida, where,
with his wife Susan, he is co-director of the Pensacola Children’s Choir.

as we discuss real life transgender issues. Our goal is to foster a deeper level
of honest and direct conversation on the transgender topic in an attempt to gain
understanding, respect, and possible action points. We will be discussing faith
issues, life stories of transgender people, medical and social resources for transgender people, and a panel discussion at the end for open questions from the
audience. The transgender community has always been there for everyone else
– now it is time for us to be there for them. Please attend this important event
and invite your friends and family to join you! A $100 Starbucks gift card will
be raffled off at the event! This event organized by the Dallas Stonewall Young
Democrats.

A native of New Orleans and the
senior sibling of 4, Paul was educated in the New Orleans public school
system and later received his degree
in Business at Southern University at
New Orleans. He has been a resident
of Dallas since 1991, and is currently
employed with JP Morgan Chase as a
Loss Mitigation Manager. Paul enjoys spending his time with his close family and friends, learning new music, working out at the gym, hanging out at
Starbucks or running on the Katy trail.
Paul’s favorite scripture is Proverbs 18:16: A man’s gift makes room for him and
brings him before the great.
Paul has been privileged to sing with some of the finest singers around, including Patti LaBelle, Jennifer Holiday, Glenn Campbell, Tonya Tucker, Rita
Coolidge, Tremaine Hawkins and the late Walter Hawkins
He is a proud supporter of the Bruce Foote Memorial Scholarship Foundation at
Southern Methodist University.

LifeWalk 2015 - the 25th Annual – will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October

This year Cathedral of Hope is a LifeWalk partner agency. As a partner agency, Cathedral of Hope is responsible for recruiting individual participants and
teams to raise funds for the event. Cathedral of Hope will receive 100% of
the first $1,000 we raise; 85% of all funds we raise above $1,000 will be
returned to us to support our AIDS Crisis Fund.

“What’s Gender Got To Do With It?” Art Show

The show features the art of Dr. Jen Welter, the first woman to enter the NFL
as a coach. Dr. Jen is joined by a roster of other artists who believe in breaking
barriers and making a difference. Etched in the record books as the first female
coach in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals and breaking a nearly impossible
physical barrier in the history of modern day sports, Dr. Jen Welter is the first
women to play running back in a men’s professional football season. Upon finishing her glass-ceiling shattering season in men’s professional football, Dr. Jen
broke yet another barrier in the sport commonly referred to as the final frontier
for women in sports, by becoming the first female coach of a professional football team. Now the world will find out that the coach also paints.

Dissertation Research

A doctoral student at Capella University is completing his dissertation research,
approved by the Capella University Institutional Review Board. If you are
LGBT and 55 or older, you are invited to participate in the study examining
LGBT Baby Boomer Resiliency Experiences: A Qualitative Study. Interviews
will be conducted via telephone and should last somewhere between 45 minutes and no longer than two hours.
CoH receives a charitable donation for each cruise booking.
Respondents will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement prior to the
telephone interview.

Teen Pride
2015
athedral of Hope Youth Ministry
will like to thank our congregation for their prayers and support. On
September 20 we opened the Interfaith
Peace Chapel and surrounding area
to host Teen Pride. Approximately
200 Teens from all around the DFW
Metroplex came out to enjoy a day of
festivities and entertainment in a safe
space. Despite protestors, the teens
and families were safe surrounded
by a wall of love. Many adults from
the LGBTQ Community and Allies
stood around the area to keep protestors away and our teens safe. We thank
you on behalf of the Queer Youth
Coalition and Cathedral of Hope
Youth Ministry.
Children’s Church
Since Medieval times, the so-called Seven Deadly Sins have been symbolized in
stories and pictures by a variety of animals. We continue our lesson series featuring contemporary animal fables called Fables of Choice, teaching twenty-first century children about these Seven Very Bad Choices. The cow is the
animal symbol for Lust and in the case of children as with adults, lust has many
targets; lust of power, lust for fame, amorous lust, lust for attention. Our emphasis is that lust is any desire that is hard or impossible to control. In the story of
the Clinging Cow, we meet a lonely bovine who has a lust for acceptance and
companionship. When a turkey wanders under her fence, she immediately wants
him to never leave her presence; to be her constant companion, her best friend
forever. The turkey, however, is not nearly as enamored with the idea as she is.

special holiday treat for all of our congregations, but especially for our children
and families, as members from all three Sunday services are joining together

sessions.
