Water safety classes provided for second graders
Water safety classes through the
Save Our Kids grant program have
begun for second graders in local
elementary schools.
Students at Carver and New Hope
elementary schools have completed
their five sessions for the classes,
designed to show them how to be
safe in and around water. Second
graders at L.B. Yancey and E.O.
Young elementary schools began their
classes on January 15. Students from each school
go to the pools at either the Henderson Family YMCA
or the Aycock Recreation Complex for the instruction.
Certified lifeguards are teaching each of the classes.
The school system’s partnership for the classes has
been made possible through a grant secured by the
YMCA and with the support of the Henderson-Vance
Parks & Recreation Department. Second graders at
all 10 elementary schools will go through the classes
before the end of the school year.

Jennie Robinson speaks at VGCC Convocation
Several hundred faculty and staff members at
Vance-Granville Community College were treated to a
sampling of the special talents of an Early College
High School student at the college’s convocation on
January 7.
Jennie Robinson, who will graduate in May with her
high school diploma and an associate’s degree from
Early College, spoke at the convocation about her
experiences over the last five years.
Her comments were delivered in a very relaxed,
mature and professional manner as she thanked the
community college for its partnership with the school
system to make her high school experience possible.
She specifically thanked the college instructors who
taught college level courses to her and her fellow
classmates over the years.
Robinson noted the instructors taught with energy
and enthusiasm that made the classes fun and exciting. She will be the first in her family to attend college
when she goes to Meredith College in the fall. She has
been awarded a $56,000 scholarship.

Miller leads students in art classes
Fifth graders at New Hope Elementary School have
benefitted once again from the special talents of volunteers who help in the school.
Dr. Wayne Miller, who is retired, led several sessions in
December with fifth graders to complete art projects.
Miller is an artist who is sharing his talents once again this
school year with the students. During the sessions, each
student finished several works of art, which will be part of
an art show at the school later in the school year.
Students in digital media
classes at Southern Vance High
School completed video projects
in December that had a Christmas theme and tested their skills
in video development and production.
The students had special
showings of their video productions in the classroom of Elaine
Webb, their teacher, on December 14. Several school administrators and faculty members, as
well as parents, attended the
showings.
Each video was produced by
a team of four students. The
videos featured students singing
along with Christmas music
recordings. The videos also
featured elaborate decorations
and costumes.
Several of the videos have
been posted on You Tube.
