“STATE FAIR”
Rodgers and Hammerstein originally adapted the novel “State Fair” for a 1945 movie musical,
which was remade in 1962. The stage production closely follows the plot of its predecessors,
providing a glimpse into the life of the farming Frake family and their three-day adventure at the
Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa. While parents Abel and Melissa are hoping to win a few blue
ribbons, siblings Margy and Wayne are more interested in finding romance on the midway.
In 1969, The Muny in St. Louis presented the world stage premiere of “State Fair” starring Ozzie
and Harriet Nelson and Tommy Tune, who also choreographed. Songs added to this production
included “Me & Juliet” and “Keep It Gay.” “State Fair” won Tony Awards for best original score
and best featured actor in a musical.

“THE SOUND OF MUSIC”
“Dancy's Dream”
“The Sound of Music” is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, “The Story of the Trapp Family
Singers.” The original Broadway production starring Mary Martin opened in 1959 and was adapted
as a 1965 film musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which won five Academy
Awards. Oscar Hammerstein died of cancer nine months after the Broadway premiere.
“Fast Movin' Train”
“A Tender Lie”
“Mending Fences”
Details of the history of the von Trapp family were altered for the musical. The real Georg Ludwig
von Trapp did live with his family in a villa in Aigen, a suburb of Salzburg, and Maria had been sent
to be a tutor to one of the children. However, the story was altered so that Maria was governess
to all the children and the names and ages of the children were also altered. The von Trapps spent
some years in Austria after Maria and the captain married, and when they left Austria after the
Anschluss, they went by train to Italy and then traveled to London and the United States. To make
the story more dramatic, the writers had the family escape over the mountains to Switzerland on
foot after Maria's and the captain's wedding.
“The Bluest Eyes in Texas”
Restless Heart Medley: “Why Not Me,” “Liza Jane,”
“Family Tradition,” “Mercury Blues,” “Mountain Music”
“Home”
“When She Cries”
“Hummingbird”
The Broadway production garnered five Tony Awards to kick off its 1,443-show run. The entire
children’s cast was nominated in the best featured actress category as a single nominee, even
though two children were boys. Columbia Masterworks recorded the original Broadway cast album
a week after the show’s 1959 opening and it was number one on Billboard’s best-selling albums
chart for 16 weeks in 1960.

RESTLESS HEART T H E H I T S
year
Not fitting the classic definition of a country
music band at its inception, Restless Heart
forged a new path and created a new sound
when they went beyond writing and singing
demos to becoming the face of a new brand
of country music. Comparisons to the sound
of The Eagles were not uncommon, with
pure and flawless harmonies showcasing
the talent of all five original members that
continue today.
With an early ACM award, gold and
platinum records and multiple number
one hits to their credit, the road now leads
to a 30th anniversary tour, set to include
concert, symphony and Christmas shows.
Lead singer Larry Stewart can remember
the exact moment and place his life began
to change forever. “I was driving east on
I-40 into town for an appointment,” he
recalls. “Back then, I was listening to what
we were doing in my Jeep Cherokee every
day. I had turned the radio on and ‘Let the
Heartache Ride’ was playing right in the
middle of the a capella intro.” Stewart had
been living with the song for a while, and
hearing it through his car speakers wasn’t
that big of a deal – until he looked at the
stereo and saw the numbers 97.9. “It didn’t
sink in because I had it in the tape deck
for days, then I realized ‘That’s the radio.
It’s WSIX.’ I pulled over to the shoulder
and sat there with my car idling. It was like
yesterday.”
‘Yesterday’ has come full circle for Restless
Heart. Then one of Nashville’s newest acts,
the band enjoys the musical ride as much
as ever.
“I think it’s been an amazing legacy, and it’s
been such an honor to have been part of
an organization that is still together doing
it after 30 years with the same five original
guys; it’s more fun than ever,” said band
member Dave Innis
“Why Does It Have to Be (Wrong or Right),”
“The Bluest Eyes in Texas” and “When She
Cries” are just a few of the timeless hits that
have imprinted country music history. “I’ll
Still Be Loving You” remains on the list of
50 Top Country Love Songs of all time.
Influencing four decades of country music,
the biographies of such artists as Rascal
Flatts and Brad Paisley would not be
complete without references to Restless
Heart. Looking back, there is no doubt that
Restless Heart was cool country before
country was cool.

JIM GRAY
CONDUCtor
Jim Gray is a freelance arranger, conductor, orchestrator and
producer in the world of recorded music and live performance.
His rise to prominence has been rapid.
Since 1990, Gray has worked with an impressive array of artists and groups including New
York Metropolitan Opera star Jeffrey Wells; R&B legends Patti LaBelle and Jonathan
Butler; gospel sensation Israel Houghton; bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs; and the Nashville
Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted recording orchestras around the world in places
such as Indianapolis, Seattle, Los Angeles, Budapest, Prague and Beijing. He is the producer
of the Day of Music at the Schermerhorn Music Center in Nashville, Tenn., an annual, free
public event that draws thousands to see and hear a potpourri of music cultures and styles,
including a free performance by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.
Gray wrote his first vocal and horn arrangements for his church band and high school choir
while just a freshman in high school. His early success motivated him to seek a career in
music. After high school, he enrolled at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., where he
earned a Bachelor of Music degree in music theory and composition. While there, he also
studied piano with Dr. Betty Sue Shepherd.
Upon graduation, Gray moved to Jacksonville, Fla., to be a staff arranger and pianist for
the very large and prestigious First Baptist Church. The mega church featured two adult
orchestras of 40-plus members, a high school orchestra and a junior high school orchestra.
During this time, he informally studied arranging with Camp Kirkland, the founder,
conductor and principal arranger of the church orchestra programs.
In 1988, Gray moved to Franklin, Tenn., where he founded the instrumental program
at The People's Church. During his 13-year tenure, the orchestra grew from eight to 45
regular members. In addition, he built a 50-member student orchestra, a 16-piece big band,
and a 12-piece group who, in addition to playing in the weekly services, traveled to China,
Ukraine and Thailand in church sponsored mission trips. The weekly demands and deadlines
sharpened Gray’s skills and broadened his musical concepts. Many of his arrangements
done at this time were published to benefit other church choirs and orchestras. It was also
during this period of his life that he met four musicians who became his primary mentors:
producers and arrangers Ronn Huff and Lari Goss; producer Bob McKenzie; and Ross
Tompkins, pianist for "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson." Encouragement and
opportunities from these four musical stalwarts opened doors for him to further expand
his musical career.
Gray currently resides in Franklin.

OUR HISTORY
EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Now under the dynamic leadership of acclaimed Music Director Michael Stern, the
Kansas City Symphony has experienced impressive artistic growth through its history
and under the batons of Russell Patterson (1982-1986), William McLaughlin (1986-1997),
and Anne Manson (1998- 2003). Assistant Conductor Aram Demirjian conducts the
Family and Pops Series concerts. Charles Bruffy is the Chorus Director.
Several thousand more are involved with the Symphony through activities such as the
Open Rehearsal Series, Instrument Petting Zoo program and Inside Music Series.
Dozens of area student musicians participate in the Young Artist Competition, where
the winner is awarded a cash prize and the opportunity to perform with the Kansas
City Symphony. The Symphony’s Support School Music program takes the orchestra
into area schools to perform a concert and all ticket sales directly benefit the school
district’s music department. Since the program’s inception, more than $133,000 has been
generated for school music education programs.
The Kansas City Symphony was founded by R. Crosby Kemper, Jr., in 1982, just months
after the dissolution of the Kansas City Philharmonic. Under Mr. Kemper’s leadership,
the founding trustees of the Symphony created a sound structure for the Board and
established the initial endowment. Today, the Kansas City Symphony is a major force in
the cultural life of Kansas City and the region.
The Kansas City Symphony serves a metropolitan population of 1.8 million people. The
orchestra’s 80 full-time musicians are area residents and vital contributors to the artistic
life of Kansas City. During its 42-week season, the Symphony performs a wide variety
of subscription, educational, touring and outreach concerts. In addition, the Kansas City
Symphony performs with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and the Kansas City Ballet.
AWARD-WINNING LEADERSHIP
The Kansas City Symphony is governed by a Board of Directors under the leadership
of Board President Shirley Bush Helzberg and is administered by a full-time professional
staff. In addition, the Kansas City Symphony benefits from the dedicated efforts of its
volunteer associations.
The Symphony’s five auxiliaries, with total membership of more than 700, raise nearly
$1 million annually, making it one of the most successful orchestra volunteer forces in
the nation.
FINANCIAL STRENGTH
The Kansas City Symphony has demonstrated a strong commitment to fiscal
responsibility. From a budget of $1.5 million in its first season, the Symphony’s annual
operating budget has grown to more than $13 million. Major gifts from the Board, local
foundations and individuals have created an endowment that is in excess of $40 million.
The Symphony’s annual fund campaign and other fund-raising events are integral to
our continued success, and we welcome your participation as a Business Partner or as a
member of the Symphony Society or other donor groups.
36
KANSAS CITY SYMPHONY
The vision of the Symphony’s Education Department is to enable people of all ages in
the Greater Kansas City area to learn, create and become inspired through orchestral
music. More than 35,000 people participate in KCS education programs annually.
Most popular are specially-programmed school concerts – KinderKonzerts and Young
Peoples’ Concerts – performed in front of a cumulative audience of 20,000 annually.
RECORDINGS AND BROADCASTS
The Symphony’s concerts with internationally celebrated mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato
were featured on the national PBS Summer Arts Series in July 2012. The DVD, titled
"Homecoming: The Kansas City Symphony Presents Joyce DiDonato," is available at
www.kcsymphony.org and selections from the concert may be downloaded from iTunes.
The Symphony’s second CD for award-winning audiophile label Reference Recordings,
Britten’s Orchestra, released in 5.1 surround sound as a dual-layer, multi-channel superaudio CD, won a Grammy® Award in February 2011 for the “Best Surround Sound” category
and producer David Frost won the Grammy® for “Best Producer, Classical” with Britten’s
Orchestra in his credits. The initial collaboration between the Kansas City Symphony
and Reference Recordings, Shakespeare’s Tempest, was released in July 2008 to critical
acclaim. The Symphony and Michael Stern have also recorded for the Naxos label. The
Symphony has taped three nationally broadcast PBS television specials and performed
on National Public Radio, including the prestigious SymphonyCast series. Highlights of
Classical Series performances are broadcast Thursdays at 9 p.m. on KCUR-FM 89.3,
Kansas City’s National Public Radio affiliate.

The Kansas City Symphony
congratulates UMB Financial

anniversary! We are proud to partner with UMB as Kansas City community
leaders and are grateful for UMB’s continued financial support. UMB’s long-time

“UMB’s relationship with the Symphony exemplifies our

A great city like ours deserves great music and the Symphony
delivers through magnificent performances in Helzberg Hall,

magic of orchestral music and special events that enrich the
cultural fabric of Kansas City.”

EMPLOYER SHARE
PROGRAM
The Kansas City Symphony would like to thank the following
companies for their participation in the Employer Share
program. Each company has made the generous decision to
fund a substantial part of the ticket cost for their employees
who attend Symphony performances, giving the gift of classical
music to their employees who, in turn, will share the inspiration
of symphonic music with their family and friends.

Safety & Security at the Kauffman Center
Kauffman Center places the highest priority on the comfort and safety of its patrons. Kauffman
Center provides 24-hour security and video surveillance services, EMT medical services at
events and has over 400 trained ushers to provide direction and support in the event that
emergency egress or severe weather refuge is required. If you have questions regarding
emergency procedures, please see our Concert Concierges for detailed information.
In case of Fire
Please proceed to the closest door marked with a lighted green exit sign. Ushers will direct
you to the closest and safest building exits. There are numerous exit doors on each side of
Helzberg Hall that lead directly outside. The areas to the north of the Kauffman Center
(Bartle Hall parking lot, Bartle Ballroom Courtyard) are good places to meet others in your
group if you become separated.
In case of a Tornado
You will be asked to stay in your seats inside Helzberg Hall. The halls are the most
structurally-sound part of the Kauffman Center complex, and were designed to withstand
tornadic conditions.
In any Emergency
It is imperative that you listen to and comply with any and all specific instructions that may
be announced.
