A weak cold front sitting
over the Panhandle is bringing
chillier temperatures today,
but highs will rebound right
back to the 60s just in time
for Christmas Day. The pleasant weather we’ve been seeing
will come to an abrupt end this
weekend as a strong arctic cold
front brings cold temperatures
and snowfall. High temperatures Saturday will be around
midnight, so we’ll spend a
good portion of the day in the
20s and 30s. As temperatures
drop, freezing rain will also
start on Saturday night. This
freezing rain should transition
over to snowfall quickly by
Saturday night and continue
through Sunday and into portions of Monday. This winter
storm does have the potential
to drop significant snowfall.
Forecast models have shifted
the incoming closed low and
associated cold front slightly
south, projecting slightly
less snowfall (2”-6”) for the
northern portions of the High
Plains. However, a majority of
the Panhandle is still expected
to receive 6” up to a foot for
many areas. As this system is
still four days out, the exact
forecast track could change,
meaning snow totals could
vary as we head closer to the
weekend. No matter the snow
totals, driving, especially Sunday, will be hazardous as strong
winds could cause blowing
snow and blizzard-like conditions. High temperatures will
sit int he 20s for the end of the
weekend and start of the next
week. Snowfall will begin to
clear Monday night, allowing
skies to clear and temperatures

This Christmas there won’t be any snow on
the ground, at least not until the official holiday is over and the weekend begins. According
to forecasts, a severe winter storm is poised to
dump what could be up to 18 inches of snow
across the Texas Panhandle, made worse by
gusty winds. This arctic blast has been named
Winter Storm Goliath, and Hutchinson County First Responders are hoping it’s anything
but that.
In a meeting on Wednesday afternoon,
emergency personnel representing Borger,
Fritch, Stinnett, Hutchinson County, and the
Texas Department of Transportation [TxDOT]
which included Fire, EMS, Road Crews, and
other specialty services as well as emergency
management specialists discussed the possible
dangers of the storm and how best to protect
residents in case of disaster.
With any storm that packs a punch, like
Goliath is expected to, emergency plans are
put in place to ensure public safety in the
event of a long term power outage or other
major issue.
The cities within the county do have plans
for shelters should they become necessary
following a prolonged and widespread power outage. “Most times, what we see,” said
Danny Richards, Information, Technology,
and Emergency Management Director for the
city of Borger, “is that travelers are in need of
storm shelters, so that may be something that
we have to address.”
Carrie Richards, Hutchinson County Emergency Management Coordinator addressed
each community and confirmed their plans for
shelter as well as their abilities to provide for
citizens should the shelters become necessary.

There are a lot of factors to consider concerning
sheltering the public, including having the staff to keep
watch over the shelter and assist those that gather there.
If shelters become necessary, word will go out to the
public as needed. If a citizen is in need of shelter or assistance as a result of the storm, they can contact Borger
Dispatch at 806-273-0930 for information.
The roads that are a lifeline between the cities in
Hutchinson county were much discussed, and TxDOT
has a plan in place for snow removal that includes major
roads like Highways 207 and 136, as well as FM 687
and 1319. The crews are working to connect the cities
first and then branch out into the rest of the county to
make getting to citizens easier for first responders in the
event of an emergency.
Residents can do their part to help with the clearing
of the roadway as well, especially when it comes to the
snow plows operating around the region. Drivers are reminded to give the plows a wide berth to avoid damage
to their windshields and prevent accidents. Remember
that the snow plows are there to make the highways
safer for all drivers, and the best course of action is to
be patient and let the plows do their work. Additionally,
the safety personnel from every city wanted to remind
individuals about the extreme danger of using what
are sometimes termed, “alternative” heating methods.

stressed the point, which was quickly seconded by Jason Pender Borger Fire Marshal, and Fire Chief Ed Adamson of Fritch.
Sometimes, when the power is out due to a storm,
individuals make the mistake of attempting to heat their
home by another means, for instance with their oven or
with a grill. This is a dangerous and often deadly choice.
According to Ready.gov each year hundreds of Americans die from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning,
and there are over 20,000 visits to the emergency room
because of the invisible gas. Under no circumstances
should an oven or cooking stove be used to heat a home,
nor should a grill, camp stove, or other device meant for
outdoor use be used indoors. There have also been cases
in Hutchinson County where a generator was used to
supply backup power, but unfortunately was left inside
a closed garage. Generators should be placed outside
during use, never inside a garage, as they can quickly
lead to carbon monoxide poisoning or asphyxiation.

With all the hustle and
bustle of Christmas dinners and hosting family
and friends, one important
resource is often the last
thing on anyone’s mind:
Plumbing. Statistics show
that Thanksgiving and
Christmas see more repair
calls than any other time
of year, and local plumbing services confirm that
even here in Borger, holiday breakdowns are a frequent occurrence. Though

seem like a priority on
Christmas Day, few things
put a damper on festivities like watching dinner
leftovers flood up from
a broken drain. Thankfully Borger’s own HK’s
Plumbing was able to give
a few tips on avoiding
kitchen catastrophe.
According to Kennei
Landers with HK’s, the
kitchen garbage disposal
is top complaint he hears
from around the holidays.
“You’re cooking great big
meals, and you have a lot of
family over. A lot of people who may not be used
to your garbage disposal
are working the dishes...
there’s a lot of activity.”
Landers says, “When you
just have a couple people
in a house who have a
garbage disposal, they’re
pretty familiar, and they
know what theirs will
do and what it wont. But
when you have a bunch
of relatives, everyone
wants to help...” While
the thought is always appreciated, using unfamiliar kitchen equipment can
lead to some mishaps, and
those mishaps usually end
with Lander’s team having their own Christmas
interrupted. “Especially
if they’re not familiar
with the garbage disposal, people think you can
just dump anything in it...
but next thing they know
they have me out there at
time and a half since it’s
a holiday.” Landers says,
“On a holiday, you’re
looking at $140 up from
$90, since we’re working on a holiday. At least
that’s my company. If we
don’t raise our prices...
we have people calling us
up on Christmas because
it’s convenient.” Though
Landers insists his crews
will always be available
when needed, he also concedes that he and many
of his employees would
rather be home with family on Christmas. “We do
use money as a deterrent,”
he laughs.
Thankfully
Landers
was able to offer a number of tips to help locals
avoid costly repairs while
allowing Landers and
his team to enjoy their
holiday. “One of the biggest things, as far as the
garbage disposal, is they
aren’t intended to be a
trash can. Put the majority of the stuff in the trash.
Scrape things off, then
rinse it. Be sure to run that
water; hot water preferably.” He says, “That’s
the biggest thing, just use
your disposal for what it’s
intended... If you have
company over and lots of
people are working the
dishes... who might not be
familiar with it, you cant
watch everybody, but get
the sink running, and feed
everything in gently.” Ac-
cording to Landers, water flow while using the
disposal is an important
way to avoid jams, clogs,
and breakdowns. He says,
“Keep water running before you start, and keep it
running after you finish.
Don’t shut the water off
as it goes down.”
Even if a garbage disposal breaks down, Landers shares one simple trick
that could save a visit from
the plumber. “A lot of
times they’ll drop something down there and it’ll
hang up.”Landers says,
“But that garbage disposal has a reset button... We
get a lot of calls from people saying their garbage
disposal is out, and all we
do is drive out and press
that reset button on the
bottom.” Though sometimes a little more effort is
required to unlock and locate the button, numerous
online tutorials are available to guide DIY plumbers through the process.
Landers says,”Sometimes

however, and anyone

time of year won’t be
alone in their time of

Line Classifieds Start out at $12 per day for 10 words and

Per column inch pick-up rate everyday after the first initial
run.
Payment Options
Pre-payment is required on all classified advertising
except those accounts with prior credit approval from our

to the campaign to end
gun violence.

Anthony,
Chris Paul and Joakim

in the spot in support of
Everytown for Gun Safety,
the nation's largest violence
prevention organization in
the country.

Director and basketball
fan Spike Lee is a member
of the organization's
creative council and
worked to get the league
and its players involved
in what Jason Rzepka,
Everytown's director of
cultural engagement, calls
a "new high-water mark
for our work."
"I think (Lee) sensed
and saw that our guys were
feeling that same passion
that he had and he reached
out to Adam (Silver) and
said I want to do something
about this and I think we
should do it together, and
we thought it was a good
idea," said Kathy Behrens,
the NBA's president of
social responsibility and
player programs.
"The guys really wanted
to kind of put their voices
behind this, and so we like
the way it's come together
and I think the guys speak
very passionately about
the issue of trying to end
gun violence, trying to
make their communities
stronger and safer for
families."
The players are joined
during the 32-second
spot by survivors of gun
violence and others who
are holding pictures of
loved ones who were
killed.
"We could not be
more thrilled about this
as a platform to be able
to reach new audiences,
to continue to focus the
country's attention on the
fact that 88 Americans die
as a result of gun violence
each day," Rzepka said.
The
project
came
together within the last
month, and Behrens said
more players would have
wanted to be involved
if they had more time.
Even so, Rzepka said
the organization never
had such involvement
from
professional
athletes, calling it "pretty
remarkable
to
have
survivors of gun violence
standing shoulder to
shoulder with some of the
biggest stars."
"Oftentimes, the stories
of the everyday Americans
who deal with this issue in
a profound way because
they've lost someone they
love to gun violence, those
stories often go untold,"
Rzepka said.
The spot ends with the
voice of Curry, whose
daughter charmed fans
during Golden State's
playoff run, saying, "We
can end gun violence."
The Bulls' Noah, in
Chicago, and Anthony, in
his hometown of Baltimore,
have been particularly
vocal about making their
cities safer. Behrens said
the league's involvement
was a natural fit, in line
with other community
service initiatives such
as the White House's
My Brother's Keeper
program.
"You need to raise
awareness and you need to
do it in a way that makes
people realize there is
something that they can
do, and that's really how
the spot ends," she said.
"We can do something
about this and that's the
point. If we can then we
should."
