We welcome back Shirley Woolard, Watercolorist. Shirley was born and raised in western New York
along Lake Ontario. She obtained an Advertising & Art
Design Degree from State University of Farmingdale,
New York. Shirley became interested in watercolor
over ten years ago, as a way to discipline her
work. She finds watercolor challenging as well as a rewarding way to communicate emotions. Shirley enjoys
painting a variety of subjects and loves seeing color in
an impressionistic style.

Starting August 2nd and running through August 10th we'll
be taking submissions for the Beneath the Surface Art Contest for students in grades 6 through 12. The theme of the
contest is "Beneath the Surface" just like our teen Summer
Reading Program this year.
The pieces will be judged during the week of Monday, August 11th and awards will be posted by the end of the day
on Monday, August 18th.
Thank you.
Please be mindful of the size of your work. It will need to be
small enough to be displayed in the children's department
display cases which means it can't be taller than 1 foot and
no wider than 2 feet.

Nurture The Child through Kindermusik
will present a free class with musical activities that highlight a variety of animals
from the Indiana State Fair. Bounce to
the beat as we ride pretend horses; play
egg-shaker instruments from the chickens on Old MacDonald's farm. Join us as
we sing, dance, and play with the cows
and pigs. This class is approximately 30
minutes long and open to children ages
newborn through 7 years old with a caregiver.

Genealogy NUTS
AUGUST 11TH at 1:30 PM
We are a group that wants to learn about how
to do research in our quest to locate our
ancestors who worked very hard to be
invisible in the census records and vital
records. We do take some research trips to
libraries out of town. In September we are
planning a trip to Allen County Public Library
in Fort Wayne.
Our August meeting will focus on the
Midwestern Roots Conference. Steve and Rose
Ann will be attending. We hope to come back
from the conference with a great deal of
knowledge to share with the group.
If you are new resident in the area, come join
our group. We are quite willing to try to help
you with your research. Someone in our
group may be researching the same families
you are researching. At our meetings, people
have met family members they did not know
existed.

Roots
AUGUST 1ST AND 2ND AT

THE
The 30+ sessions will focus on using everchanging and emerging technologies and
sources online. Other sessions will cover
photo preservation, DNA, methodology and
using traditional sources. The nationally
known presenters are genealogy experts.
MEMBERSHIP RESEARCH HELP
Members of the Wa-Pe-Ke-Way chapter of the
DAR will be available in the Indiana Room to
help potential members with their family
research on September 13 from 9:00 a.m. to
1:00 p.m. They will answer questions and
assist with the research needed to become a
DAR member. This help is one –on-one. You
will be guided through the DAR Internet site
for help with your research if you already have
a family member in the DAR or think you have
a family member in the organization. Men are
also welcome as the research will help you join
the SAR. If you would like more information,
please contact Rose Ann in the Indiana Room
as she is a member of the DAR. Rose Ann can
help you with your research if this date is not
convenient for you.
Indiana Room August
Display
The Hendricks County Museum has provided a
display of materials about the churches from
the past in Hendricks County. Included in the
display are pictures of churches, group
pictures of church members, memorial plates,
and cookbooks produced by the church
members. If you can identify anyone in the
pictures, please talk with someone in the
Indiana Room. You may have a copy of the
picture and know that one of your ancestors is
in the picture.
Due to declining attendance, the Friends Jam has discontinued.
The Jam started in March of 2009 and raised funds for the
Friends of the Library and the Friends of the Park. Since it
started, the Jam has brought in $6,756 for the FOL
and approximately $5,000 for the Danville Park.
Average
attendance over 5 years was approximately 72 people with the
high being 137 (2010) and a low of 27 (2014).
The FOL wishes to thank all of the musicians, audience members
and volunteers who have helped over the years. Our sincere
gratitude goes to Chuck Dolder, George Davison, and Ray
Whitaker who headed the program. Those volunteers who
assisted with the set up and take down of chairs and equipment
made the job so much easier for everyone. Also special thanks
goes to Bill and Ellen, George, Ray, Charlie and Annie, Norm, Bill
and Big Al, the "Third Row Ladies", the "Danville Kittens", Bobby,
Darrell and Charlene, Don #1, Don #2, Mark, Charlie, Joy, Larry,
Avis, Lee, Ruthie and Marvin, Bill and Virginia and the "Do-Wop
Sisters".
At some point, in the future, we may pick up our guitars, button
boxes, bass fiddles, mandolins, banjos, fiddles, dobros and
harmonicas and try it again.
FALL BIG BOOK SALE
Thinking about making room for some new books? The Friends
of the Library’s Fall Big Book Sale is September 12-14th. The FOL
is accepting gently used books for the sale. Drop them off at the
FOL book drop which is located inside the east entrance.

by Lola McElyea. Stop by the
Adult Department to see the
two paintings, one is a fall
scene and the other a vase
with flowers.
The winner of the raffle
chooses which painting they
want. Chances are $1 or six
chances for $5 and may be
purchased at the Adult
Desk. The drawing will be
held September 15, 2014.
