ARE YOU KING?
This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Church's liturgical year. On this Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of
Christ the King.
In John’s Gospel, we hear the dialogue between Jesus and Pilate. Pilate questions Jesus about the charges
brought against him.
Jesus made a point of letting Pilate know there was a huge difference between His Kingdom (Heavenly) and the
political powers of this world. King and kingdom may be appropriate terms for Jesus' mission and promise, but
only by analogy. He is king but not with the expectations of this world. He is king because he governs earth with
mercy and love and the heaven is full of His glory.
Jesus refers to a kingdom that does not belong to this world. This has been mentioned earlier in John's Gospel.
Recall that in His prayer during the Last Supper discourse, John 17:6-18, Jesus prayed for his disciples who are
in the world but do not belong to the world. Yet like Jesus, they are sent into the world for the world's salvation.
In a kingdom that uses a different power to save and to serve others. What a strange way to govern! The army
that follows Jesus is a group whose only weapons are prayers for liberation, healing and forgiveness.
Pontius Pilate was scared of Jesus, but he was curious to know Jesus in person. He had heard about him because Herod, who sent Jesus to him to be judged, told many things to him that John the Baptist had announced
about the Messiah, about conversion. This was the reason why Herod decapitated John because of the strong
influence of his concubine). It is helpful to return to the first chapter of John's Gospel to understand the context
of Jesus' words to Pilate. Jesus came into the world, but the world did not know Him. In John's language, the
world prefers the darkness, and yet the light will not be overcome by the darkness.
Truth has been another important theme in John's Gospel. We see it emphasized in the conclusion of the dialogue between Jesus and Pilate. Those who know the truth will recognize Jesus as king.

This Sunday, the last of the year, the Catholic Church celebrates Christ the King of the Universe. It is a way to turn
our attention to the end of everything. The end of everything is the kingship and the kingdom of Christ.
A great French poet, Jean de Lafontaine, says that in everything we must consider the end. The end is the most important in everything. So it is for the kingship and the
kingdom of Christ.
However, it is important to know what we are talking
about. There are at least three ways to be King:
The political way, the Roman way: we dominate
and enslave others to our interest.
The messianic way, the Jewish one: a descendant
of King David takes power to crush the enemies of the people, the enemies of God.
And Jesus’s way. It is a mystical one, constraining;
crushing no one. In this way, the King is handed over to
men to be killed with no soldiers to provide security.
Jesus says: “My Kingdom does not belong to this world. If
my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would
be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews.
But as it is, my kingdom is not here.” The King can be
killed. He is still reigning. He is reigning through His love.
His Kingship is one of love.

ERES TU REY?
Pilatos pregunta a Jesús acerca

Pilato
le preguntó: “Entonces, ¿Tú eres rey?” Jesús respondió: “Tú lo has dicho: yo soy Rey.

La forma política, la manera romana: dominamos y esclavizamos a otros a nuestro interés;
de Dios;
Él reina a través Su amor.
Su realeza es amor.
