Two and a half years ago, I left a career I loved to
become the CEO of Neighborhood House. It wasn’t a
hard decision, as I was drawn to this non-profit that
provided 30 different programs, spanning from infants
to seniors, combating hunger and poverty while
promoting education and self sufficiency. In just this past year, our programs
and services positively impacted the lives of over 6,300 individuals/families. I
am so glad I joined this remarkable organization. It’s great to be a small part of
something so extraordinary.
Neighborhood House is such a unique organization in many ways. I am
constantly re-energized by the passion exhibited by our employees who are
mission driven, even volunteering for our programs on their days off. I admire the Board of Directors
who continually strive to make the best decisions for the people we serve. I am invigorated by the
volunteers who ask “what else can we do”. I am amazed at the generosity of those who financially
contribute, allowing us to continue providing exemplary services to the most vulnerable populations.
As we approach on the 120th anniversary of Neighborhood House in 2016, we will continue to ask
how do we best serve the community. Our mission centers around helping people by giving them a
hand up and not a hand out. Our future efforts will include programs focused on revitalizing the
community and instilling self-sufficiency in individuals. We strive to exemplify the adage “if you give a
man a fish, he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
As you will see in this annual report, Neighborhood House positively impacts the community every
day. This is accomplished through the hundreds of Neighborhood House volunteers, the generosity of
donors, and support of our dynamic partner agencies. I am excited for the future of Neighborhood
House. I hope you will continue to support Neighborhood House, so you too can be a part of
something extraordinary.

Green, who is diabetic, said she weighed 315
pounds before she became a Meals on
Wheels client. Like many of our clients,
Green had difficulty doing her own grocery
shopping and cooking. She said she was
eating a lot of take out and not eating
vegetables. Now, after a year of receiving
meals, she is down to 252 pounds.
“It is portion controlled,” Green said. “It’s in
balance and has the important ingredients.”

In addition to the food, Green said she looks
forward to seeing her Meals on Wheels driver
daily after the death of her son earlier this
year. “If I was really, really ill, I would tell her
and she could do something about it,” said
Green, “The driver would know if I didn’t
answer the door for a couple of days, like if I
was laying on the floor.”

BECAUSE OF YOU...
SAddLE UP 2014 FUNdRAISER
Our 11th annual dinner, Saddle UP for
Neighborhood House, was a great success. This
event included live and silent auctions, a dinner,
bourbon tasting, but also focused on putting the
fun back into fundraising. That evening, the
playground remodel campaign was introduced
as our fund-a-need, which brought in $14,500.
SAddLE UP 2014 PLAYgROUNd FUNd
For over 100 years, Neighborhood House has
served at-risk children living on Peoria’s south
side. Eighty-five percent of children in the
preschool are living well below the poverty level
with an additional ten percent in foster care. The
playground was chosen as the fund-a-need
because we wanted to enhance the lives of the
smallest people we serve.
Thanks to the generosity of community members
and businesses, we were able to complete our
campaign in 8 months. A special thank you to
CEFCU, Ameren, and Kreiling Roofing for their
substantial contributions to the playground
campaign.

Toy Shop is the longest running toy store in Peoria.
What started out as Neighborhood House staff
refurbishing used toys for kids at Christmas has
grown into 165 businesses collecting toys and 513
volunteers giving of their time during the holiday
season.

Caregivers also pay $10 per child, in exchange for
approximately $80 of toys per child. This year, 716
children had a better Christmas morning because of
our collection sites and volunteers.

Since Neighborhood House has
multiple programs that focus on
feeding the hungry, the fund-a-need
for the evening was feeding seniors,
children, and pets. Proceeds from this unique event allowed us to:
• Host a 2nd year of summer feeding for children in the 61605 zip code
who have limited access to food when school is not in session.
Approximately 250 children received a lunch at Neighborhood House this
summer. Activities such as dance, art, gym time, and anger management
classes were also provided.
• Continue providing food for the 120 pets on the Critters Meals on
Wheels program. Several years ago, it was discovered that seniors on the
meals on wheels program were sharing food with their pets. Neither
were getting enough to eat. This program helps seniors keep their pets
in their home, which has proven to reduce isolation and depression.
• Reduce the waiting list for seniors waiting to get on the Meals on Wheels
program.

Pet Lover Honored with Endowment to Critters Meals-on-Wheels
When Pat Barley passed away at age 93, she had lived a full and meaningful
life. She had been a model, a Mom, an elementary school teacher, a principal
and the first woman administrator in her York, PA, school district. She was
passionate about educating young minds and mentoring young teachers. Pat
was also passionate about pets. That’s how her son Craig, and his wife Gail,
came up with the perfect way to honor her memory. They created an annual
endowment for the Critters Meals on Wheels program.
“Pat loved her dogs and would certainly have gone hungry if it had meant her
pets would be fed. She understood and appreciated the mission of Critter
Meals-on-Wheels wholeheartedly.”
Several years ago, the Meals on Wheels drivers realized that seniors were
sharing their food with their pets, and neither were getting enough to eat.
Critters Meals on Wheels was created so seniors could keep their pets in their
home, reducing isolation and depression. There are currently 125 pets on the
program.

AT NEIgHBORHOOd HOUSE, WE BELIEvE:
•
That all lives are enriched by participation in a compassionate and
supportive community.
• That the enduring strength of our Neighborhood Community relies on
cultivating a spirit of neighborliness and mutual respect among diverse
populations.
•
That Neighborhood House should work to bring groups and individuals
together as an inclusive community.
• That families require lifelines of support and benefit from community
services and programs responsive to their needs.
• That children and their families from all socioeconomic backgrounds
should have equal access to quality early childhood programs.
•
That children and teens should have a safe environment for their
development in order to foster positive social interactions.
• That seniors, including the homebound elderly, need and deserve to be
valued as individuals who are important to the fabric of community life.
•
www.nhpeoria.org
That an effective settlement house must continually evolve and adapt to
the ever changing needs of its community.
